T20 World Cup: Lahiru Kumara Fined For Confrontation With Bangladesh Batter

Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara has been fined 25% of his match fees over his confrontation with Bangladesh batter Liton Das during their T20 World Cup group A match in Sharjah on Sunday.

Das was fined 15% of his match fee.

Kumara was found guilty of breaching the Code of Conduct for Players and "using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International match,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.

The statement also said Das was found guilty of "conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game".

During their match Kumara had flung the ball back in the direction of Das who had to duck and virtually take cover after he played the delivery back to the bowler.

But the confrontation between the two players took place in the fifth over when Das fell to Kumara after driving the ball to mid-off for a catch.

The two had to be separated by the on-field umpire and the Sri Lankan fielders.

Das was out for 16.

The ICC added in its statement that after the dismissal of Das, Lahiru Kumara walked towards him "using actions and words which provoked an aggressive reaction from the batter."

"Having been provoked by the bowler Kumara, Das reacted aggressively and in a manner which was contrary to the spirit of cricket," the statement added while saying that both Kumara and Das pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Rod Tucker.

Women’s History Month:  Married Women’s Names

One of the frustrating things about researching women through newspapers is that for many years, women were referred to by their husband’s name, as in “Mrs. Robert Smith.”  That was even a woman’s legal name on documents such as Social Security cards or credit cards. It’s often only by finding information such as wedding announcements that one can actually find out the woman’s own name. A case in point: one of our favorite films, the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (RGNS) Kodachrome sound film made by John Cowart that we acquired in 2019.

This scene is one of the parade-in-front-of-the-camera variety, part of a "pilgrimage” by the members of the RGNS Guild, the Atlanta women tasked with fundraising for the school. Many of these women were prominent in Atlanta society, and their names--“Mrs.” with their husbands’ names attached--show up often in the newspapers, listed as giving parties or holding meetings or playing golf, or heading any number of philanthropic organizations. They were very well-connected women and many of their husbands were members of the Capital City Club. They were very active for RGNS and undoubtedly raised quite a bit of money for the school.

The ladies introduce themselves to Mrs. Speas holding the mic, then walk past the camera. I’ve tried to identify as many of them as possible by their own first names and maiden names, by looking at the digitized Atlanta Constitution online, as well as genealogy records, thanks to UGA Libraries’ databases.

Mrs. J.W. Speas - The former Mary Henrietta Davis (1899-1985). Her husband, James Whewell Speas, was VP & Trust Officer of the First National Bank in Atlanta. Found thanks to a genealogy posted to Ancestry. Henrietta’s wedding announcement has family name information in it, as well.

Mrs. Jack Rushin -  The former Mary Fickett Brown.  Jack Jason Rushin was head of Rushin-Pearson, inc.  He was also a member of the Men’s Garden Club of Atlanta. We know an amateur film was made about garden clubs but we have yet to locate it.

Mrs. Arthur Waite - There’s an Arthur Hamilton Waite, Sr., a Jr., and a ‘the 3rd’ in Atlanta.  The woman in the film looks fairly young and it is probably the former Louise Rees, married to Arthur Hamilton Waite III, a CPA and a graduate of the University of Georgia.  However, they were not married until 1954, so that throws the date of this film, which I believe to be 1952 based on the date code, into question. So either Mr. Cowan was shooting on 2-year old film, or I may have the wrong Mrs. Arthur Waite altogether.

Julia Brice Jenkins - Mrs. Jenkins thankfully gives her own full name. She was the sister of John A. Brice, the president of the Atlanta Journal newspaper.

Mrs. Luther Allen - The former Cora Bessie Murphy. She was a member of the Hill and Dale Garden Club. A friend in the club was Mrs. George Hoyt. George was one of the men who made a film about Atlanta gardens that we are trying to find. Luther Allen was in insurance.

Mrs. Ed Macon - This is the former Lucile Ingram. Ed Macon was in furniture sales.

Mrs. Morris M. Ewing - This is Dorothy Fielder Ewing. Her husband was president of a real estate company and had also been in banking. A newspaper account of the birth of their daughter in 1913 barely mentions Dorothy, it’s mostly about Mr. Ewing!

Mrs. Henry Clay Bagley, Sr. - The former Margaret Gunn Davis Taylor, of Macon. She is also the mother of Mary Henrietta Davis Speas (Mrs. J.W. Speas), who is holding the mic for the ladies in the film.

Miss Klein is likely Lillian Klein, who was involved in the RGNS Guild for a number of years.

Several of the ladies’ names will require a bit more digging to uncover, so we will leave those for future researchers into Atlanta society history.
