Gavin watched Nines tinker with the cheap coffee maker in the break room. The whole thing was so absurd it felt like an out of body experience. He hadn’t had a partner in years and was now suddenly stuck with a military-grade android who bitterly resented every second spent by his side. It was also the first time he’d met someone as temperamental, as foul-mouthed and as coffee-loving as him.

Nines smacked the machine. It produced a pitiful whine and a stream of muddy brown liquid. Gavin cleared his throat.

“We should head to the scene now. Two victims in a warehouse. One human, one android. Battered beyond recognition. I’d go by myself but I need you to scan their identities for me.”

Nines turned around with disgust and something that looked a lot like fear written across his features.

“That sounds awful. Why would I want to come see such a thing?”

“It’s… your job…?”

“No. I’m not a detective. I’m a café owner. Markus and Connor might have forced me to sign a contract with the DPD but they can’t force me to do things I don’t want to.”

“And what am I supposed to do with an uncooperative partner?”

“That is not my problem.”

Gavin was stumped. He wasn’t used to people talking back to him, especially not civilians… not that Nines was really one any more.

“Come on, man. I don’t wanna tell on you. Let’s just make this work. Getting you in trouble is only gonna push you and all your fellow tincans into more hot water. Then you’d have lost your little café for nothing.”

Strangely, he found himself appealing to reason and logic. Nines’ aggressive demeanour was so similar to his own that Gavin had been forced to switch alignment entirely. His colleagues were pleasantly surprised by the change… though now there was a new rabid dog in the station they had to avoid angering.

“Fine. But tell me where exactly to scan. I don’t wanna be looking at those poor bastards any longer than I have to.

And don’t expect me to lick any blood like Connor the great. That’s fucking disgusting.”

“Of course.”

Nines took a shaky sip of his blue latte and dropped the cup back onto its saucer. Ralph hovered anxiously above him.

“Right after a triple homicide by this dude I went to school with. He grew up exactly the same way I did. He had a nice family, nice job. There was nothing wrong with him. He could have been me, I could have been him. But how did the universe decide who’d be the cop and who’d be the killer? No phcking clue. No rhyme or reason for the way things turned out. And that realisation chilled me to the phcking bone, dude. There’s things scarier than blood and guts and that’s the workings of our own minds.”

Nines considered that for a moment and shuddered. Ralph hastily walked away, muttering to himself.

“Ralph does not like these talks. Murders and killings and bloody, bloody things. It reminds Ralph of the old days.”

Gavin watched him retreat behind the store counter with a raised eyebrow.

“Where on earth did you find that specimen?”

“In a haunted house.”

Gavin blinked uncertainly, not sure if he was being serious. Nines barked a laugh.

“Both of us were living rough after the Revolution. He’d been squatting in different buildings since he deviated and I was one of the new units Connor brought onto the streets from Cyberlife Tower. Nines’ eyes flicked over fondly to Ralph. The WR600 was now dealing rather enthusiastically with a customer. Gavin followed Nines’ gaze, sipping the heavenly coffee while his perception of the world went through another sea change.

“I’m proud of you, son. You didn’t want to join us at first but you went above and beyond for this mission.”

Captain Fowler pinned a medal of honour to the front of Nines’ dress uniform as the audience clapped. Nines inclined his head but remained expressionless. He glanced sideways and Gavin couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face, scarcely noticing the matching medal that joined the other ribbons and distinguished service awards on his chest.

Connor and Markus were waiting for them as they got off the stage. Nines shoved past both of them, ignoring Markus’ outstretched hand and the camera flashes from the media.

Irony of ironies, Gavin felt the need to save face. He stopped to shake hands and pose for pictures with the leader of Jericho and new Mayor of Detroit.

“He’s served well. He’s done his part. When can he go back to his little café?”

Markus smiled wistfully.

“Securing Nines’ public service was not just a bargaining chip in passing the Android Equality bill, Detective. It was a key instrument.”

“What do you mean?”

“We don’t just need to guarantee public safety from advanced androids, we need to recuperate the development costs. Cyberlife received countless government grants for RK R&D activities. I need to show tax payers that their money didn’t go down the drain.”

Markus dipped his head and Connor swiftly motioned for a journalist to join them.

Gavin was used to Nines’ temper but he was now seeing it accompanied by anxiety for the first time. His hands were splayed out across the dashboard and his eyes were as wide as dinner plates. The LED on his temple sparked red in between its rapid cycles of yellow.

Weaving expertly through the traffic, Gavin pulled up outside Calypso Café. Nines leapt out of the police car before it fully stopped.

Gavin saw the source of trouble instantly. Two burly men tossing chairs and kicking tables. A third was berating terrified patrons and a fourth jeered at Ralph, plucking at his apron and smacking his damaged cheek. Gavin knew that anti-android sentiment still simmered beneath the surface of their society, but it had been a while since he’d seen it rear its ugly head… and so violently at that.

Gavin’s eyes flitted between both ends of Hank’s backyard as if he were watching a tennis match. Connor continued to babble and Nines grip on his drink became increasingly vice-like.

Then there was a splintering sound.

Foods that normally came in boxes (e.g., cereal and powdered milk) were put into glass jars. Times have changed. Now that we have plastic and bagged items with long shelf lives, bomb shelter food would look very different today (except for the powdered milk, I suppose, which I always hated). And there are plenty of ways to keep food items water-proof. A nuclear event is not the only disaster for which we need to be prepared these days. Earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes are all on the rise, as well as real threats from people both within and outside our country. Then there are blizzards, pandemics, and long-term power outages as we recently saw in Texas. And the Boy Scout motto of “Be Prepared” should still guide our preparedness. So, let’s take a look at what a survival food pantry should look like today. Look for those that are high in protein – this provides long-term energy, while carbs and sugars are only for the short-term. - About that Powdered Milk: Fortunately, powdered milk now comes in cans, as opposed to those traditional boxes. You do not have to take measures to protect it from water damage. When reconstituted with water, it can be used on cereal and for cooking (e.g., mashed potatoes) if you have an alternative cooking method during power outages. If you have children who cannot tolerate the taste, then have a supply of canned chocolate or strawberry syrup to “sweeten the deal.” - Pasta, Rice, Noodles: These can be temporarily filling because of their carb content. But here’s the thing: they must be cooked, and that will require using your supply of water. If you are sheltered in place with your public water supply still available, then all is good. You can cook these up as much as you wish. But if your water supply is cut off, or you have to use alternative methods for cooking, these are probably not good options. Still, put them in your pantry on the chance that they can be prepared. - The Debate About Couscous: Yes, this is a type of pasta, made from small grains of a specific type of wheat flour. The beauty of it is that it is steamed rather than boiled and takes far less water to cook. Unlike traditional pasta, couscous cooks in about two minutes. On the other hand, it is extremely high in gluten. So, if you have family members with gluten sensitivity, it is not an option. Planning for Long-Term Survival in Place As mentioned above, your food pantry should be planned for long-term survival, even if an immediate event is only short-term. Our goal for long-term survival in place is to have those food items that: - Provide solid nutrition - Can be prepared using as little fuel and water as possible - Will be “damage-proof” - Are as compact as possible - Have a variety of flavors and consistencies, so that “food boredom” doesn’t set in Here are some things to think about as you stock that survival food pantry: - Avoid dried beans. While they are a great source of protein, they take lots of water and fuel to cook. Items like navy beans and great northern beans now come in cans. Opt for that alternative. - Water is still the highest priority. Have ½ - 1 gallon per person per day for about a month. Beyond that, you will need a water-collection device/process and water filters to purify that water. - Rely on canned goods as much as possible, but remember they have lots of sodium and sugar, so are not as healthy as other options. - Freeze-dried fruits and veggies are a must. They don’t take up much space, and they are sources of essential nutrients and antioxidants. They are also important to keep your intestinal functions operating properly. You will get the right amounts of vitamins and minerals through these freeze-dried items. - Honey has no shelf-life. It can last forever. Have lots of it to use as a sweetener, and it does come in plastic containers. - Instant oatmeal packets. Place these in plastic bags to preen water damage. They are reconstituted with a small amount of water and heat. Use honey for sweeteners. While sugar lasts forever too, it does not have the health benefits of honey and is susceptible to humidity. - A variety of oils can add “spice” and flavor to foods. And most come in plastic containers now. If you can cook, use them liberally. They are caloric heavy and can provide energy as well as better taste. - Ramen: This is a common survival food for college students on tight budgets, but there are survival benefits too. They are good sources of carbs and take only a small amount of water to cook. - Freeze-dried and dried meats: these can last over a year. - Canned tuna in oil: perfect source of protein and Omega-3. - Granola and protein bars: Perfect for snacks and well-rounded nutrition. One Keynote here: make certain that all foods that are packaged in boxes or paper-type containers are stored in water-proof packaging, such as mylar bags that are vacuum-sealed. If You have to bug out When you have to evacuate, you face unique challenges. Of course, you cannot drag jugs of water and canned goods in backpacks. A wheeled cart is certainly a short-term solution, but it will not house everything you may need for a long-term bug-out situation. Your options are limited, so focus on these items: - A water collection device and filters - Survival Matches - Flashlights with new batteries or headlamps - Fully lightweight nutrition bars and other freeze-dried items You Can do This... Planning ahead is the best scenario for survival. Water and food are key factors in that planning. Make a list of items for both short and long-term survival, get to your grocery store and other retailers with the right supplies and equipment. The Invitation

This was inspired by a prompt that @lets-share-a-paopu sent in like 1000 years ago, that I ended up rereading yesterday and I found that I just kept hearing it in Hiskoa's voice.

This follows about two months after A Promise - I will be writing a drabble to address certain things that have occurred in that time.

Serena's new companions make themselves comfortable, and receives an invite to a prestigious Gala - Hisoka is "intrigued." (AKA - Hisoka will not leave the poor shopkeeper alone).

It wasn’t often that The Curio Cirque saw many customers at once. Thus, the shop was often quiet: the silence a deceptive impermanence that seemed to become as much a part of the ambiance of the shop as Serena’s calm presence behind the counter. Recently, the development of a friendship between the shop owner and a newly minted Story Hunter had added a livelier tone to The Curio. To say that Serena was shocked the first time Mairi returned with a handful of very colourful characters in tow, would be one of the greatest understatements of the former-hunter-turned-shop-owner’s life. While some of the Hunter’s acquaintances were welcomed warmly by Serena, others were greeted with less enthusiasm.

While Serena quite enjoyed the rambunctious melody that would carry throughout the Curio when Mairi and her companions chatted about everything and nothing, it was hardly a sentiment she would share aloud in the presence of a certain smug magician. He already lingered among the shelves of her little shop, much too often, much too long as it was – no need to give him further encouragement to increase the frequency of his visits.

Serena found herself unable to focus on the novel she had spread out on the counter in front of her. With a sigh, she closed the book and turned to survey the small group that was the cause of her distracted state. Her eyes were met by a pair of yellow ones, sharp and unrelenting. Exhaling through her nose, Serena stood, and made her way around the front counter over to the little library on the west side of the shop. Mairi and her companions were spread out among the reading chairs that were set up in the well-loved space. Leaning against one of the bookshelves, Serena listened to the ongoing conversation, studiously ignoring the magician who she could feel was still closely observing her.

Serena hadn’t quite caught onto the conversation that Mairi and the two boys were involved in, before Hisoka spoke up.

“Would you, dearest Rea?”

Mairi and the boys fell silent at the sound of the magician’s voice.

Serena fought the urge to roll her eyes, tilting her head to peer at him from the side.

“Would I what, you clown?” in her periphery Serena observed Mairi flinch at the snide tone she had used to address Hisoka. Serena was unconcerned.

The smirk that seemed to exist perpetually on Hisoka’s face whenever he was in the shop widened just the slightest, and he leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees.

“Would you attend the gala, if given the opportunity?”

Ah. They were talking about the gala that was set to take place a week from today; kicking off one of the very few larger private auctions held annually in Yorknew city that was, in no way, associated with the mafias. It was a difficult event to obtain an invitation to, as it was organized by the Hunter’s Association – only the most elite Hunters and non-Hunters received an invite.

Serena was quiet for a moment, eyes sliding back to Mairi and her two young companions, brow arched. She turned, silently making her way back around the counter and reached into one of the drawers built into the polished oak fixture. She withdrew a thick embossed envelope that was made of a heavy parchment and returned to the small group.

Holding up the envelope so that her small audience could observe her name scrawled in particularly ostentatious gold ink, while she gazed wryly at the magician.

“I hadn’t given much thought as to whether or not I would attend. Large parties like that are… hardly my favourite way to spend an evening.”

The boy dressed in green, Gon, hopped up from his chair in excitement and asked if he could see the invitation. Serena handed it to the boy, who proceeded to return to his seat and looked over the fancy RSVP card inside of the envelope with his blonde friend, Killua. Serena continued to meet Hisoka’s gaze passively.

“Well, well. Who are you, that you would receive an invitation? I must say I am intrigued.” His smile grew wider, sharper, and Serena forced herself to look away from the man; eyes falling back to the invitation that was being passed back and forth between the two boys. Before she could say anything, Hisoka continued, “And to think you might not use it. Such a shame.” She felt, more than heard, the man stand and step into her space, leaning in just a little too close for Serena’s liking.

Mairi was watching the exchange with a concerned look, but Serena just shrugged off her friend with a roll of her eyes.

“I have friends in the right places, I suppose. I do interact with quite a few Hunters through this shop, you know.”

She turned to face his silent challenge, arms crossed, refusing to take a step back: not wanting to allow Hisoka the satisfaction of controlling the conversation, even, if only, in a physical sense. He knew what she was doing, and his smile grew again.

She continued, gazing with practiced nonchalance at Hisoka’s painted face, “and like I said. Not really my kind of entertainment, even if only for a single evening.”

He chuckled, “Well you only have to ~ make it ~ your kind of entertainment.”

She scoffed, “I don’t know what specifically you’re implying, but I can guarantee I would never agree to whatever you have going on in that squiggly little mind of yours.”

There was a tense moment of silence before a real laugh was pulled from the magician – his face lighting up dangerously with the action. Then he straightened, and moved back over to the chair, languidly draping himself over the cushioned seat, reminding Serena very much of a stray cat that refused to get lost. His eyes remained on her.

“Why, I was only going to suggest that you bring me as your plus one. I would ensure that you had an excellent time.”

“Yeah, right.” Was the only response she deigned to give the man.

“Now, now, don’t be so hasty to dismiss my offer. Besides, you know I’ll make good on my promise of a good time: when have I ever let you down, after all?”

She blinked slowly at him, as though his words made no sense whatsoever.

"Never, but only because I haven't given you the opportunity to."

He dramatically brought a hand to his chest and gave the shopkeeper a look of mock hurt.

“You really should put more trust in me.”

“I think I’ll pass.”

Serena made her way over to Mairi, perching herself on the arm of the chair the other woman was sitting in.

“Anyway, if I am going to go, then obviously Mairi is going to be my date. I actually like her.” She punctuated her words with a small head tilt and a saccharine smile. For the first time throughout the conversation, Hisoka’s smile had disappeared, the gleeful look replaced by a quietly calculating gaze. She knew that was never a good sign.

Time to change the subject.

She turned to the boy to her left with a genuine smile, “Hey Gon, I got a fishing rod in the other day that made me think of you! Wanna see it?”

The boy blinked up at her with a giant smile across his face and nodded furiously.

“Alright, let's go,” Serena directed the boy to the front of the shop, gently taking the invitation out of his hands.

Even as she moved away from the library, Serena felt the heavy burn of Hisoka’s eyes on her back. She wasn’t sure why the magician had been so keen in his attempt to convince her to bring him as a plus one to the gala. However, she did know that whatever the reason could be, would only mean trouble for her.
