Basics of burgee flags for recreational boats
The burgee flag is usually triangular in shape, your typical pennant, adorned with the distinguishing characteristics of the yacht club or boating organization it represents. The burgee flag takes the next most senior position on a vessel, usually the main masthead or starboard spreader or backstays. In a powerboat, the burgee flies off a short staff on the bow. It can be flown both while underway and at anchor.
Tumblr media
Burgee flags, has its foundation in the historical maritime traditions and codes of the merchant ships and navies of the world. It can be quite intricate and involved, but it's more than most recreational boaters need to know. A full immersion in the steeped conventions of the use of burgee flags on the high seas is rarely necessary in close range of a coastal marina or anchorage. I don't think I'm alone when I see the confusion that still exists where this tradition in recreational boating is concerned. Whatever the reason, boaters might need a little clarification in view of the vagaries on the subject. To be sure, there are a myriad of types of maritime burgee flags with distinguishing marks and shapes, but in this discussion, we will discuss a few maritime flags that are used by recreational boats, speed boats and many more. The courtesy flag Courtesy flags, are most probably used in foreign waters for identification purposes or in waters in which you are a guest; they are used as a token of respect. On a sailboat, its flown on the boat's starboard spreader. If your burgee is on the starboard spreader, you can move it to the masthead. In a powerboat, it's displayed on a bow staff displacing the burgee which could be placed on the portside spreader or antenna.
Tumblr media
What dimension should you use for burgee flags? The general rule for the right size of burgee flag is pretty simple. It depends on the length of your boat. If your boat is 30 feet in length, your flag should be at least 30 inch long at minimum. If you don’t like the idea and want a larger flag, you can also customize the size of your flag as per your own specifications. However, all burgee flags or courtesy flags should ½ inch for every foot of overall boat length. If the length of your boat is 30 foot, then your burgee should be at least 15 to 16 inch long. For recreational boaters, all the burgee flags should be ½ the size of the ensign.

Flag Etiquette
Ever wonder what days you should fly the flag? Or how about where to place state and municipal flags when grouped with the U.S. Flag? How about how to properly fold a flag? We've compiled a short list below for you to check out and brush up on your flag awareness.
Flag Etiquette - Official U.S. Flag Code
The following laws and regulations were amended July 7, 1976, by the 94th Congress of the United States. The following sets forth the existing rules, customs and etiquette pertaining to the display and use of the flag of the United States of America.
Section 1
The following codification of existing rules and customs pertaining to the display and use of the flag of the United States of America shall be and is hereby established for the use of such civilians or civilian groups or organizations as may not be required to conform with regulations promulgated by one or more executive departments of the Government of the United States. The flag of the United States, for purposes of this chapter, shall be defined according to Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1, section 1 and section 2, and Executive Order 10834 issued pursuant thereto.
Section 2
A. It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
B. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered cautiously.
C. The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.
D. The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on New Year's Day, January 1; Inauguration Day, January 20; Lincoln's Birthday, February 12; Washington's Birthday, third Monday in February; Easter Sunday (variable); Mother's Day, second Sunday in May; Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May; Memorial Day (half-staff until noon), the last Monday in May; Flag Day, June 14; Independence Day, July 4; Labor Day, the first Monday in September; Constitution Day, September 17; Columbus Day, the second Monday in October; Navy Day, October 27; Veterans Day, November 11; Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November; Christmas Day, December 25; and such other days as may be proclaimed by the President of the United States; the birthdays of States (date of admission) and on State holidays.
E. The flag should be displayed daily on or near the main administration building of every public institution.
F. The flag should be displayed in or near every polling place on election days.
G. The flag should be displayed during school days in or near every schoolhouse.
Section 3
That the flag, when carried in a procession with another flag or flags, should be either on the marching right; that is, the flag's own right, or if there is a line of other flags, in front of the center of that line.
A. The Flag should not be displayed on a float in a parade except from a staff, or as provided in subsection (j).
B. The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, or sides or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.
C. No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America, except during church services conducted by naval chaplains at sea, when the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for the personnel of the Navy.
D. The flag of the United States of America, when it is displayed with another flag against a wall from crossed staffs, should be on the right, the flag's own right, and its staff should be in front of the other flag.
E. The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.
F. When flags of States, cities or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak.
G. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the United States flag's right.
H. When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace.
I. When the flag of the United States is displayed from a staff projecting horizontally or at an angle from a windowsill, balcony, or front of a building, the union of the flag should be placed at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half-staff. When the flag is suspended over a sidewalk from a rope extending from a house to a pole at the edge of the sidewalk, the flag should be hoisted out, union first, from the building.

Any other flag so displayed should be placed on the left of the clergyman or speaker or to the right of the audience.
M. The flag should form a distinctive feature of the ceremony of unveiling, a statue or monument, but it should never be used as the covering for the statue or monument.
N. The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak of an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at Half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory of possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with the law. In the event of death of a present or former official of the Government of any state, territory or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the death of a Vice President, the Chief of Justice or a retired Chief of Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until Interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of the State, territory or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a member of congress. O. When the flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed that the union is at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered in the grave or allowed to touch the ground.
P. When the flag is suspended across the corridor or lobby in a building with only one main entrance, it should be suspended vertically with the union to the observer's left upon entering. If the building has more than one main entrance, the flag should be suspended vertically near the center of the corridor or lobby with the union to the north, when entrances are to the east and west, or to the east when entrances are to the north and south. If there are entrances in more than two directions, the union should be to the east.
Section 4
That no disrespect should be shown to the flag of The United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, state flags and organizations or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
A. The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

No person shall display the flag of the United Nations or any other national or international flag equal, above or in a position of superior prominence or honor to, in place of, the flag of the United States at any place within the United States or any Territory or possession thereof: Provided, that nothing in this section shall make unlawful the continuance of the practice heretofore followed of displaying the flag of the United Nations in a position of superior prominence of honor, and other national flags in positions of equal prominence or honor, with that of the flag of the United States at the headquarters of the United Nations.
Flag Etiquette - Folding and Other Issues
Fold the flag in half widthwise twice. To form the perfect triangle, begin folding at the striped end and work through until the only the field of stars is exposed. Then, take the remaining fabric and fold down and tuck inside the triangle.
Here is a link that demonstrates proper folding: http://www.usflag.org/fold.flag.html
How to Display the Flag
Over a Street - suspend vertically with the union to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street.
Over the Sidewalk - suspend from a rope extending from a house to a pole at the edge of the sidewalk, hoist out union first, from the building.
On a Wall Mount Pole - display from a staff projecting horizontally or at an angle from the windowsill, balcony, or front of a building, with the union of the flag at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half-staff.
When not on a Staff - display flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way, which is with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
When on a Stage - The flag of the United States of America, when it is displayed with another flag against a wall from crossed staffs, should be on the right, the flag's own right and the viewer's left, and its staff should be in front of the staff of the other flag.
When in a Group - Always fly the U.S. Flag at the peak when on the same halyard as other state or municipal flags. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the right of the flag of the United States.
However, when flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace.
Flying at Half-Staff - First hoist the flag to the top of the pole for an instant, then lower to half-staff. It is considered proper to raise to the top again before it is lowered for the day.
Destroying an Old Flag - Section 4 of the Flag Code states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." We recommend that you contact your local VFW Chapter and ask them for help properly disposing of your flag.

The marine conservation columnist for Boating magazine for 10 years, Rybovich championed the 200-mile limit for U.S. waters and bag and size limits on offshore species such as billfish, tuna and mackerel. He also helped found the West Palm Beach Fishing Club and was its president for 10 years. As an angler, Rybovich enjoyed fishing off Palm Beach and in the Bahamas. He helped establish Cuba and Venezuela as fishing destinations in the early 1950s, and suggested to his pal Ernest Hemingway -- Rybovich had outfitted Hemingway`s boat Pilar -- that he try the fishing off Cuba. Still, he was best known for the sleek fishing boats crafted at his family`s Rybovich and Sons boat yard in West Palm Beach. The boats were as practical as they were beautiful. Designed specifically for fishing, Rybovich boats are still the standard against which all others are judged. ``He was ahead of his time in terms of recognition of things game fishing that would make a boat a better fishing platform,`` said Nick Smith, a long-time friend and top sailfish angler, who noted that Rybovich viewed his boats as nothing more than a platform to catch fish from. ``Every custom-built boat, and for that matter every high-quality production boat, is a reflection of Rybovich. They`ve all got the Rybovich heritage if they`re worth a damn.`` Before Rybovich invented aluminum outriggers, they were made out of bamboo. Fighting chairs ranged from pieces of household furniture to uncomfortable, ineffective contraptions. Rybovich developed a chair with a ball-bearing spindle, an adjustable foot-rest and back, and padded arms. His 56-year-old design has not been improved upon. Rybovich was the oldest of John and Anna Rybovich`s five children. John Sr.

I have talked to several captains about what caused them to decide to fly their flags this way, to something we’ve all done for years without knowing exactly if we’re doing it right. Flags fly true and clean on several red triangle pennants would be flown under that to signify how many were released. Weather flags are also popular community, this shift in thought signifies more than just catch-and-release becoming the norm. So I asked a few specific questions of a few normally reliable sources here and overseas, release flags right side up these days. For more recent exchange rates, please use the Universal that crews around the world are using flags to show their success instead of stacking dead fish on the dock. If you are a U.S. documented or registered vessel, fly the American flag; if you flag available. However, many folks today think it’s cool to not have a bow rail, which fly them in that order from top to bottom, with bill fish taking precedence over tuna. SUPERIOR QUALITY - colourful make attachment quick and easy.
