Space of Political Expression, “The Everyday assembly”
To consider the subject of people's rights in true perspective, the project is started with the human architectural scale. I observed how students were playing an important role in the crucial political debates and protests in many countries. For example, in the Athens school of architecture, the Thammasat Massacre, and the Tiananmen Square student protest, and many other movements. Even though some of these movements are quite violent, they bring about some changes no matter large or small.
From my research about democratic space, it stated, "There may not be one right way to design a democratic public space, but by learning and experimenting, testing assumptions, and responding, and by putting the citizens or users in the center of the process, we are performing democracy."
Also similarly from another reading, the idea of "setting diversity as the goal, and by understanding context, culture, and users’ needs are being emphasized.” These statement is proving that the free people’s space should start with the people centre design.
After interviewing some of my friends to understand how much people in my generation participate in political talk, I could categorise them into two groups, the active and the passive participants. To make people talk about politics, there is a need for a trigger that would make them relate more to the topic and engage in the conversation; therefore, the idea of sensory experience and the immersive theatre play is being use as the base of the design.
The site that I am choosing for the design is at the faculty of architecture, Chulalongkorn University.
One of the reasons why this location is chosen is because there is usually an event or a ritual every year that would encourage people to participate and transform the space for other use. The design would be possible to be active in this space.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.1. Architecture building original plan
The cafeteria space is specifically picked also because it is a space that is already active for interactions. People normally participate in a group talking.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.2. Circulation Plan of the Thammasat Massacre Play Design
The overall design is started with the sequence of the Thammasat Massacre event because it is one of the most significant political events in Thailand which people still recall. The sequence of the events is being translated onto the circulation plan on how people should act in the space, and how they are divided into each of the categories. By allowing people to act on the reenactment, it would also make them understand the situation more, like how the police are investigating the cases.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.3. Inspiration of the Furniture Design
From that, the specific elements from each scene of the Thammasat Massacre are being use as inspiration for the furniture design for space.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.4. Furniture Design
These pieces of furniture are modular and movable, so it could be used in the transformation of the space from the theatre space to the cafeteria, then the assembly space. The pieces are the Thammasat dome which is transforming into a prison, the assembling tables which is inspired from the building window, the Talipot fan which is used for poster exhibition, the ladder, the fences, the 14th Oct chair which is being during the Thammasat Massacre to hit the students with, the curtain which symbolized the hanged person, and the shoes which are enlarged to be the cemetery.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.5. The Thammasat Massacre Play Design “with Furniture”
Afterwards, the design of the furniture layout is based on the base circulation of the play as you can see that it is separated into five scenes in sequence from right to left.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.6. The Cafeteria Space Design
These spaces after being used as a part of the immersive theater play, the furniture are movable to transform into cafeteria space. The cafeteria spaces are for eating, reading, club space, group study, and a free space for a reassemble.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.7. The Assembly Space Design
Also, the space is transformable into assembly space for a political gathering, talk, debate, speech, or campaign space based on any issue referring back to the quote that I stated earlier that the space of freedom does not fit into one.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.8. SCENE I
For background information, the Thammasat massacre happened because the Thai press reported on a play staged by student protesters, on 6 October 1976, which allegedly featured the mock hanging of then Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn causing the attack by Thai state forces on student protesters on the campus of Thammasat University. But prior to the massacre, four to five thousand students from various universities had demonstrated for more than a week against the return of former military dictator Thanom Kittikachorn to Thailand from Singapore, so it is said that students were blamed unjustly by the press.
During SCENE 1, the monk is trying to receive alms from the dead students on the 6th October, while one student walks across the death to ask for permission to go to exam.
For scene one of the theatre design, I put the cemetery to symbolize the death students that were on the ground, and put the TalaPad fan to symbolize the Monk, and make the layout hard for the students to struggle to go past the area.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.9. SCENE I, Cafeteria
For cafeteria space, this is an eating space which can be used for reading and club space.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.10. SCENE I, Assembly
For assembly purpose, the space is used for gathering, recitation, and the exchange of ideas in large groups inspired from the circular plan

This is an architectural diagram of the space.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.12. SCENE II
For SCENE 2, the main actor was hung down from the tree with the soldier to symbolize the the hanging of the Electric Authority in going against the monk.
So in the center, I designed the curtain installation that would symbolize the hung person where the furniture around symbolizing the people watching the event.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.13. SCENE II, Cafeteria
For the cafeteria, it is transformable into the main cafeteria space and the table are movable up to the students' needs.

The space is also used for campaigning purposes, debate speech, or a club space.

Tumblr media
Fig 3.17. SCENE III
For SCENE 3, the police deceive all the main actors and put them in jail without warning.
The fences that used to protect the shooter of the Thammasat Massacre were used as the design of the movable fences of the prison design in the theater play, and the ladder is symbolizing the higher power that are watching over the innocent students.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.18. SCENE III, Cafeteria
For the cafeteria, the space is used as a food stall.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.19. SCENE III, Assembly
The space is also transformable into the campaign booth area.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.20. SCENE III, Section and Plan
Tumblr media
Fig 3.21. SCENE IV
For SCENE 4, the higher power were taking the students outside to hang them on the tree and start hurting them while most student got arrested.
The chairs that were used for hitting the death students were laid all over the place and a curtain symbolised the innocent death.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.22. SCENE IV, Cafeteria
The space can also be used as an eating area and for studying in groups.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.23. SCENE IV, Assembly
The assembly is for two person conversation which is influenced by the church confession box design where people are allowed to talk about anything without being judged on.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.24. SCENE IV, Section and Plan
Tumblr media
Fig 3.25. SCENE V, AXON
Tumblr media
Fig 3.26. SCENE V
For SCENE 5, the uprising of the protest within the space were happening. Then the police forces were mass shooting from outside the fences of the University. Lastly, the space is lockdown, and everyone were laying on the ground with the soldier around them.
This is the last scene, and it is the most significant one because it is a space where the students were forced to surrender to the higher power, so this space is designed as a pile of wreck objects. The fences are symbolizing the higher power that is being protected behind these fences. This space is being planned for no alteration because it symbolises the ruins of democracy.
To summarise the design, these section of axon drawing of scene one to show clearly how the space is being transformed and reorganise for each of the purposes.
Tumblr media
For scene I, I emphasised on the table and the chair reorganisation of the space.
Tumblr media
For scene two, the space is being emphasized on the rearrangement of the table plan to achieve the goal of each space.
Tumblr media
Scene three is emphasized on the reorientation of the fences.
Tumblr media
Scene four is emphasised on the  reorganization after 14 October chair.
Tumblr media
The last scene is where I stated that it would stay the same throughout and can be adaptable and transformable according to the students' needs.
Tumblr media
For the urban scale, I mapped out the significant universities relating to the government that this design could be placed to make a statement.

April 28—  May 5
Paul Ryan repents!
Jesuit Fr. Pat Conroy, 60th House Chaplain had been forced to resign by Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House. Ryan acknowledged his mistake and Father Conroy is back in the pulpit. Was it because of this prayer or because Fr. Conroy had invited a Muslim  cleric to say an opening prayer?
“May all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle. May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by
Before the Curtain rises: HERE’s presentation of Basil Twists (and Hector Berlioz’s) Symphonie Fantastique
all Americans.”
By the way, why do we have anyone leading prayers in the House given the country’s grounding in the separation of church and state?
Generation Women shared secrets on April 25. It was  story telling by women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s. Each participant had seven minutes  to tell her secret and the fun began at 7 pm. It was at the Caveat Theatre, a  New York speakeasy, on 21 A Clinton Street. The April 25 event was sold out but please come to the May 29 event.
Boo-hoo. The Frick concert series is over. What a lovely way to spend two late afternoon hours on a Sunday. The Music Room has a gentle atmosphere. The architect, John Russell Pope, altered the original building, a private home, in the 1930s  to become a museum. Originally named the auditorium, the Music Room was intended to be used as a lecture hall and art gallery.
On Wednesday there was a burst of summer. Friends and I had dinner at Aquagrill and then went across Sixth Avenue, walked past the gorgeous motorcycles in Dugati and arrived at HERE. We were there to see Symphonie Fantastique, a twenty years old puppetry event by Basil Twist. It takes place in an aquarium with live music by pianist Christopher O’Riley. Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie  thundered across the small dark theater.
Graphic Lessons: Recent thirty-five-year-old widow Millie Fitzgerald applies for a private school teaching job, faints on a stabbed and dying man in the school kitchen, deals with the only witness to the stabbing – a troubled nine-year-old, develops a crush on a NYPD detective and her dog dies.
Graphic Lessons: Nine-year-old Dana is the only witness who overhears a person fighting with George Lopez, the soon to be stabbed Windsor School kitchen worker. Who can she tell? Her mother who never listens or accuses her of lying? Her father who’s started a new family in Singapore? She tells Millie.
Graphic Lessons: Something’s eating at NYPD Detective Steve Kulchek: a stabbed partner? surviving a car bomb? his girlfriend marrying his corrupt boss? screwing up an important case?  It doesn’t matter because he’s relentless.

Also, the space is transformable into assembly space for a political gathering, talk, debate, speech, or campaign space based on any issue referring back to the quote that I stated earlier that the space of freedom does not fit into one.

Fig 3.8. SCENE I
For background information, the Thammasat massacre happened because the Thai press reported on a play staged by student protesters, on 6 October 1976, which allegedly featured the mock hanging of then Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn causing the attack by Thai state forces on student protesters on the campus of Thammasat University.
For scene one of the theatre design, I put the cemetery to symbolize the death students that were on the ground, and put the TalaPad fanto symbolize the Monk, and make the layout hard for the students to struggle to go past the area.

Fig 3.26.
Fig 3.27. SCENE I, Diagram
For scene I, I emphasised on the table and the chair reorganisation of the space.

Fig 3.28. SCENE II, Diagram
For scene two, the space is being emphasized on the rearrangement of the table plan to achieve the goal of each space.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.29. SCENE III, Diagram
Scene three is emphasized on the reorientation of the fences.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.30. SCENE IV, Diagram
Scene four is emphasised on the  reorganization after 14 October chair.
Tumblr media
Fig 3.31. SCENE V, Diagram
The last scene is where I stated that it would stay the same throughout and can be adaptable and transformable according to the students' needs.
For the urban scale, I mapped out the significant universities relating to the government that this design could be placed to make a statement.

This post is a documentation of my thoughts during G-Dragon’s ACT III MOTTE concert in Singapore (Day 1). If you don’t want any spoilers, please do not read further. And if you do, I hope you enjoy my interpretation / review of the concert.
As one would be able to guess, the concert is titled Act III because Kwon Jiyong is G-Dragon’s third solo album, following Heartbreaker (2009) and Coup d’Etat (2013).
The concert is divided into three main acts: Act I is G-Dragon; Act II is G-Dragon versus Kwon Jiyong; and Act III is Kwon Jiyong.
The first act is what I interpret as the birth (my words, not his).
The opening graphics seem to have been plucked straight from a molecular biology documentary (think images of DNA - the double helix - and microscopic captures of cells) and there is no clear storyline either. It is just an amalgamation of what seems to point at the inception or gestation of a new persona. Indeed, the songs - Heartbreaker, Breathe, A Boy, But I Love It, and Obsession - are from his very first album Heartbreaker which represent his first attempt at solidifying the image of the bombastic and brash G-Dragon. To some extent, the first act comes across as rather distant. The stage is flooded with a bloody redness and the songs are reminiscent of the early 2000s K-Pop. It would not be a stretch to say that it is even a distant past for Jiyong who has come a long way musically and personally from that album. Regardless, the first act highlights that it is necessary to celebrate and pay homage to one’s origins, no matter what one may feel about it years after.
The second act is what I interpret as the perfecting or the sculpting (my words, not his).
The video interlude is a cryptic thriller that stars unidentified masked women doing a surgical procedure unto an unidentified individual. There are close-ups of syringes, body parts, surgical equipment and finally, it pans up and reveals G-Dragon on the surgical bed who has on a red netted mask (the one in his album images). It is not clear as to who is perfecting or sculpting the G-Dragon persona but I believe it is a combined effort of both himself and others surrounding him be it professionals he works with or even us as fans. And here, come the songs from his second album Coup d’Etat. The energy is vastly different in this act. It’s more experimental as if boundaries of what can or cannot be are being tested. It breaks the mould of more formulaic songs and goes into tracks with wild energy like Michigo, Crayon, I Love It, Today. I also believe that it is in this act that the dichotomy between G-Dragon and Kwon Jiyong begins to become clear, with songs such as That XX, Missing You and Black showing off the Kwon Jiyong sentimentality. In the middle of Act II (just before the last two tracks Crayon and Today) , a video is played showing Jiyong’s closest family and friends who are asked what they think of G-Dragon and Kwon Jiyong respectively. At first some are stumped, unable to distinguish their opinions about the two. As time goes, they begin to proclaim G-Dragon as a superstar of his time, as a hard worker, as an icon while they state that Kwon Jiyong is the quieter, introverted side that is kind and respectful to everyone (but also loves to party when he gets the chance). Strikingly, one interviewee states that he does believe the two are separate identities and that is something for the audience to ponder about. Once the video ends, Today and Crayon are performed.
The third act is what I interpret as the distancing and distinguishing (my words, not his).
It commences with a video of Jiyong himself standing in front of a camera in an interestingly self-conscious stance. He hugs himself and constantly tugs with the lapels of his blazer. He tries to put to words how he feels about his alter ego G-Dragon and it takes him some time - he even says he does not know who he is. A while later, he starts out by explaining that Kwon Jiyong is a son to someone, a friend to someone, and a lover. Then he continues by saying that while he tries his best to look good as G-Dragon, sometimes it’s heavy to have to put on this alter ego, this mask. But even so, he fears having to remove it, because he fears not being able to shine without all these embellishments. He even states to those filming him and presumably the audience that they probably do not understand what he is saying. He asks that they/we understand him nonetheless and his desire to be accepted as himself. But when the video ends, it leaves the audience with a bittersweet taste in their mouths - a sadness to think that the idol you have admired for so long is struggling to understand himself or to be at peace with himself. The first song that is played is Superstar and the stage is raised extremely high such that Kwon Jiyong becomes out of reach and is singing to the stars alone. The loneliness that may not have been as clear in the record itself is crystal clear now. And a cry to be understood is heard without being said. Intro and Bullshit call back to his younger, childlike and sometimes brash selves, cutting the sadness away smoothly as if the initial predicament was never presented to you. And when the concert is put on hold and Jiyong speaks to the audience, you forget for a second that this is a man who has been struggling with his own identity because he is all smiles and jokes tonight - he even cutely tells off the audience for repeatedly interrupting him and goes, “Can I talk?” before continuing to tell us what the album means to him. But the sense of struggle does return with Divina Commedia, which Jiyong first explains to be a very deep and meaningful song to him that he’d made after reading Dante’s works that had inspired him greatly. And when he sings the famous lines from The Truman Show, “In case I don’t see ya good-afternoon good-evening and good-night,” a ‘door’ opens up behind him and you wonder, with trepidation, where he might leave to.
The encore, made up of Crooked, This Love and Untitled, strikes me as an interesting selection of songs that represent three very distinct eras of Kwon Jiyong/G-Dragon. And before singing Untitled, Jiyong even says that “Kwon Jiyong is over” and asks for G-Dragon to come out, playing out the two separate identities himself. But ultimately, G-Dragon bows out - “GD said he’ll come tomorrow so I guess I’ll have to sing. I hate G-Dragon! He’s always like that!” - and it is Kwon Jiyong, the 29 year old man who has become a superstar in the past decade, who takes the final stage and croons out the most personal track he’s ever written, Untitled. As the song climaxes, confetti falls over the crowds, and Jiyong performs a few surprising ad-libs to show off his long hidden vocal prowess, delivering his sincerity and devotion to an old lover. Then the concert ends and after a short credits video, the words “The End” finally appear. And the metaphorical curtains fall to this two hour long film.
My final thoughts
Ultimately, the concert is a celebration of his personal success and growth over the years. But it is also Kwon Jiyong’s way of expressing his desire to distance himself from the garish, impish persona of G-Dragon that he’d created in his early years to instead craft and sing songs that represent him more truthfully. Needless to say, the message has been delivered loud and clear and the fans are more than willing to stay for more. I know I am.
Side notes
Pay attention to the costuming if you attend the concert. It’s interesting how he first starts out with extremely red clothing but later on it is watered down into a white coat that has specks of red on it. To me, it seemed that red is associated with G-Dragon while white is associated with his purer side Kwon Jiyong. In the end, some parts of G-Dragon will always be with him regardless because G-Dragon is part of him.

The worst things about travel in 2019
The world is changing. Constantly. Perpetually. Every time you look, it has altered. Every second, every minute, every hour and every day the world is transforming, it’s morphing, it’s adding and subtracting and shrinking and expanding.
For travellers, that’s a thrilling concept. It means there need be no conclusion to this wandering passion, no end to the joy of discovery that travel can bring. Every time you set out to see the world, you will find something different. You will experience the buzz of the new, even in places that can feel so familiar.
This changing nature is what makes Traveller’s Annual Report so important. Every 12 months our writers take the world’s pulse, they weigh up the good and the bad, track the major changes, assess the current trends. Our team of wanderers considers the destinations that have caught their collective eyes over the last past financial year, as well as the advancements made across the tourism board, from aircraft to accommodation, gear to gadgets.
The report this year takes us from the farthest reaches of Russia to the familiarity of inner-city Melbourne. It moves from campsites in Utah to overwater luxury in the Maldives. It takes in everything from Michelin-starred fine-dining, to hole-in-the-wall taco joints.
123RF
Overtourism is a huge problem – particularly in Western Europe.
READ MORE: * One simple change would ease the horror of changing a nappy mid-air * The future of flying: How air travel is changing * Why is it so expensive to change a name on a flight ticket?
And of course any good Annual Report should include a profit and loss statement. Ours is a summation of where travel has improved, and where it’s begun to let us down. Love slow travel? So do we. Detest spending 15 minutes trying to turn the lights off in your hotel room? You’ll find an agreeable audience here.
The world is changing. Destinations are changing. Hotels are changing. Food is changing. Even modes of transport are changing. And this is where to find the best of it. – Ben Groundwater
Today we feature the worst things about travel in 2019, tomorrow it will be the best things.
GET REAL
Bespoke. Curated. Crafted. Artisan. When will travel industry operators stop using these “authenticity” terms for everything from bath plugs to buffets as a way of appealing to the Millennial market? Coupled with not actually doing anything particularly thoughtful and place-appropriate, let alone unique – a subway tile here, a vintage print there, this movement has become hackneyed, lazy and meaningless.
TOTAL BUNKUM
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has recently walked back (surprise, surprise) on his earlier enthusiasm for bunk beds and relaxation lounges for economy passengers on the airline’s Project Sunrise flights. These are the ultra-long, non-stop flights that Qantas is proposing to London and New York. From Sydney or Melbourne to London – that would mean 21-plus hours sitting semi-upright in an economy seat. Ouch.
FLIGHT FRIGHT
The latest eco evangelist cause spotlights the impact jet travel has on our planet through its contribution to CO2 emissions, one potent factor behind climate change. Australian and Kiwi travellers, who often fly long distances, are responsible for more aviation-industry CO2 emissions per capita than most other nations. While we have cause for concern, the remedy lies in strategy rather than abstinence.
SOCIAL ENGINEERING
Online applicants for a non-immigrant visa to visit the US are required to provide details of their social media accounts over the last five years. Applicants must also provide telephone numbers, email addresses and international travel details over the same period.
JETTING OFF: ONE
Fifty years after the 747 first took to the skies, Boeing is no longer producing the passenger version of its jumbo. We’ll still be flying aboard these four-engine double-decker aircraft for some years to come but their days are numbered, replaced by more fuel efficient twin-engine aircraft that can haul almost as many passengers at lower cost.
JETTING OFF: TWO
It’s the biggest bird in the sky generally made for more spacious seating and major capacity boosts but Airbus, and for that matter its customers, has decided its A380 is no longer sustainable, and will be phased out after current orders are completed. They’ll still be around for a good couple of decades, but their replacements won’t have the same sheer grunt.
CROWD CONTROL
Overtourism, as it’s been dubbed, is a huge problem – particularly in Western Europe – with no easy answers, and it’s one that’s still growing. Cities such as Venice, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Dubrovnik are being trampled daily by tens of thousands of feet, as the global number of travellers increases and interest in the hotspots shows no sign of waning. But what to do about it?
GETTY IMAGES
All about the ‘Gram.
FEED THE MASSES
The wildly popular photo-sharing app Instagram is partly responsible for overcrowding at some of the world’s most photogenic locations. Travellers used to read guidebooks and follow those recommendations slavishly. Now they do their research through their Insta feed and seek to visit the stunning places they’ve seen in photos. Everyone wants to go to the same ones.
SLUMMING IT
Visiting a slum or a favela? Touring through indigenous communities? Visiting schools or orphanages? There’s danger here. Travellers have to be very careful that the tours they choose to do are actually beneficial for the people they go to stare at. There are plenty of exploitative experiences out there, and research is required before you commit.
CREATURE DISCOMFORT
Though awareness is slowly being raised, there are still plenty of travel experiences that rely on the exploitation of animals. They’re easy to recognise, too: if an animal is being made to act or live in a way that would be unnatural to it in a normal setting, then it’s being exploited for human gain. Avoid.
CHANGING TACK
Do you want to ride a horse in rural Japan while dressed in plastic samurai armour? Some well-meaning tourism operators urge their clientele do so. Why does this sort of thing – and plenty of similarly tacky experiences – still exist?
RIDE NO MORE
For a while there it seemed like you could switch on your phone anywhere on the planet and arrange a low-cost ride with Uber. But the governments of the world are catching up with the infamous app, and in an increasing number of countries it’s no longer available. Uber has pulled out of Singapore and Denmark, it’s been banned in Hungary and Bulgaria, and it’s restricted to just a few cities in Germany, Italy, and Spain.
WE WUZ SWABBED
At most airports around the world, swabbing passengers in the search for explosives is not a thing. It rarely happens in the US. You hardly ever see it in Western Europe. And how many would-be baddies are actually caught by this constant swabbing?
EXTRAS, EXTRAS
With budget airlines it’s a given – you have to pay extra for any niceties. Now, however, supposedly full-service airlines have begun charging extra money for seat selection, and have even begun forcing passengers to fork out for seat-back entertainment and extra food they want to consume on board. When will this creep of hidden costs end?
RICK BOWMER/AP
The joys of US airport security.
WELCOME TO AMERICA
Hell is a scrummage of 500 people awaiting clearance through two open TSA (Transport Security Administration) machines manned by grumbling, screaming staff, when eight more adjacent machines remain inexplicably closed. National security is a sensitive issue but, no, Mr Customs Officer, that uniform and badge don’t entitle you to act like a bulldog chewing a wasp, especially after a 15-hour flight.
EARLY MORNING NOISE
Certain airlines should desist from Walking on Sunshine at a hideous volume at 4am during check-in (let alone, on the plane itself). Yes, we get the idea of trying to make the whole process seem more fun but maybe hold off on the sunshine at least until sunrise?
AUTO MATES
Robot (or just do-it-yourself) hotel check-ins are already upon us, and robot room services and concierges are likely to follow. Sure, it’s an amusing high-tech innovation at first, but what will happen to the human interaction and emotion, and those late-evening chats to real bartenders? We’d much rather take the good, the bad and the unpredictable that comes from interacting with actual people in foreign places.
CONTROL FREAK OUT
Do the tech-heads who design hotel rooms ever trial a prototype? Have they tried to close the curtains, extinguish the mood lighting, turn on the TV or adjust the shower temperature with their gadgets, iPads, remote controls and complicated dials? A bit of international consistency and user ease would be nice. Sometimes simplicity and a basic switch are good things, especially when jet-lagged.
LEANERS NOT LIFTERS
Dear tourist, we know you aren’t really holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and maybe you could think of something more original than the same thing 500 other tourists are doing right behind you. It’s an old joke. The cliché of holiday snaps. And we don’t need you to pout, make the victory sign or leap into the air either. You look silly. Just saying.
NOT-SO-GREAT OCEAN ROAD
Just say no to the daytripping queues lined up to snap a photo at the lookout at Port Campbell. Stay overnight to go beyond the clichéd shot and there are plenty of other non-official “apostles” along the south-western Victorian coastline.
AGUNG PARAMESWARA/GETTY
Scattered plastic trash brought in by strong waves at Kuta Beach.
WHAT A WASTE
There’s a reason why pool clubs now abound: the pollution on Bali’s beaches is shameful, given the amount of money tourists spend to be there. It’s called “plastics pollution” and reached its nadir with the finding of a plastic bag in the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, 11 kilometres below sea level in May. We should be ashamed.
APERITIF TIFF
Kudos to Campari for making the Aperol spritz a ubiquitous global drink. But who doesn’t long for the days when that first sip of “sunshine in a glass” was something special: a marker of arrival in the Veneto? That’s where the Aperol spritz was invented: a mix of white wine, soda and the orange aperitif created in Padua in 1919. At least those who know, know: spritz will always taste better in Italy.
YES SIR, NO SUR
British Airways, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific are among the airlines that have bumped up their “fuel surcharges” in the last year. With cash tickets, it makes little difference whether it’s called a surcharge or a price increase. But for frequent flyer redemption tickets, it can mean a couple of hundred dollars on top of the redeemed points. Alas, other airlines may soon have the same idea.
CHECK THIS
Traditional full service carriers are attempting to compete on price with low-cost rivals – and, increasingly, that means making the baseline economy fares non-inclusive of checked-in luggage. British Airways, Air Canada and Virgin Atlantic are all guilty on this to varying degrees. It makes comparing prices for long-haul flights a real nuisance when some airlines work to a different standard.
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
Faced with fights for locker space, several airlines are tightening hand-luggage policies. Alas, instead of telling everyone with a wheeled case to check the damned thing in, they’re shrinking what you’re allowed to take on board for free. Europe’s notorious Ryanair is the latest to get stingy, only allowing bags that will fit under the seat – maximum measurements 40cm x 20cm x 25cm, down from 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.
FEELING CLUCKY
Airlines seem determined to give passengers the full battery-farm experience, slipping extra seats into planes clearly not designed for them. Air Canada 3-3-3 formation Boeing 787-9s are the most egregious example of cram-’em-in greed. 30 inch (76 centimetres) pitch and 17 inch (43 centimetres) seat width may be just about OK for a short domestic flight, but it’s not for a 14-hour trip from Vancouver to Melbourne.
LEFT DANGLING
The travelling tea-drinker gets a poor deal these days, in that so many hotel rooms sport only a tiny Nespresso machine (if you have ever tried to make tea with the water from one of these things, you will know it tastes more like coffee). Here’s a big thank you to those who do go to the trouble of offering a kettle in the room for tea tragics. We thank you.
GIVE SIP THE ZIP
You’ve nabbed two prime viewing perches on the Champs-Elysees in Paris or the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele ll in Milan and ordered cocktails. Whaaat? They still use plastic straws? Europe, you are now officially on notice. In March, the European Union passed landmark legislation that will ban single-use plastics such as straws, plates and cutlery, giving businesses until 2021 to phase in alternatives. We can do our bit by saying no in the meantime. See laststraw.com.au
DON’T BE A PHONEY
Be careful what you wish for. The widespread availability of free Wi-Fi in attractions, airports and cities now means travellers are increasingly immersed in their phones rather than their surroundings. Take advantage of Paris’s free Wi-Fi to find your way to the Eiffel Tower, but once you get there, try putting your phone away and focus instead on being present and savouring the moment.
BUTLER NOTHING
Do we really need a bath butler, a sleep specialist and a pillow menu with 12 different options? In a bid to differentiate themselves, many hotels are offering unnecessary levels of customisation. Worryingly, this trend will only get worse as chains collect more and more personal data about their guests. Some brands already let you tailor the furnishings, toiletries and mini-bar for your stay. What next? The curtain colour? The brand of TV?
RIGHT TOWELLING
The novelty of finding a gaggle of towel geese waddling across your hotel bed wears off rapidly when you realise, a) all the towels will probably be washed and replaced tomorrow, and b) the housekeeper who made them just scrubbed a toilet. We already have enough work clearing the bed of decorative pillows – please leave our towels in the bathroom where they belong.
BIT OF A STRETCH
We all know how important it is to get up and stretch during a long-haul flight, but that doesn’t mean you have to block the galleys and emergency exits for 15 minutes while you run through your entire yoga routine. A few in-seat exercises each hour is enough to keep the circulation flowing. No one wants to emerge from the bathroom and come face-to-bum with someone doing a downward dog.
PARADISE LOST
Rampant hotel development is slowly strangling the Maldives. The archipelago has more than 130 resorts with another 20 expected to open in the next two years. The Maldivian authorities wants to relocate residents to larger atolls to free up smaller ones for development, which will put even more pressure on the region’s water and energy resources, and meanwhile, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has promised a threefold increase in tourism promotion.

HDB Interior Design Ideas
When planning a home renovation, most people already have a good idea of what they want. However, it’s also true that most people have neither the experience nor the education to know if what they want is the most efficient way of using their living space, or if it can still be improved upon.
That’s where interior designers come in.
Often licensed practitioners who have undergone the necessary education to practice their craft, interior designers have both the necessary experience and education to help you bring your ideas to life.
Designing the interiors of your home, apartment or even a condo is a tricky job. Several things need to be considered and finally, everything should be aligned accordingly. With the growing urbanization, the number of homes is getting more and more. This trend is leading to much smaller homes which in turn gives us a bit difficulty while designing appropriate HDB interior design. There are many good modern interior designcompany Singapore, who you can consult and have your interior designed. With the growing trend of renovation Singapore, many innovative interior design ideas are popping out in the market.
A small home may look even smaller if you clutter it up with your unnecessary things. Getting rid of all those unwanted things out of your condo can free up so much space that you can’t even imagine. Suddenly, your hdb will start to feel spacious. Your interior design plays an important role is maximizing space. Elevated shelves is a very smart way for maximizing the space. There are several interior design Singapore concepts that you can try to adapt to your HDB.
Sparing a separate room for the kitchen can take out a lot of space and it’s not even necessary. If you’re looking for a subtle interior kitchen design, you should contact a good interior design firm Singapore and let them propose a good kitchen island for your house. A decent sized dining table should do the trick, unlike the huge dining tables which are used very rarely. Size and shape of the kitchen furniture can be altered according to the size of your kitchen. Small condos don’t even need a dining table. Go for a larger island to replace a dining table, this step can give you multifunctional space.
The interior design of a home should be planned passionately. There are several interior designer Singapore are available online. A theme that reflects your lifestyle could be your primary option to go for. A theme that combines all the elements according to your tastes and liking speaks volume about your personality and identity. A subtle color palette should do the thing for the outline. Fill it up with your preferred designs. Textures should be taken care of properly.
For an eye-catching design, it doesn’t necessarily need to be bright and in-your-face. With airy white curtains and a pale grey bed frame as the backdrop, something different but subtle like this will stand out sufficiently. Take the two rose-gold geometric hanging lamps in this bedroom – it grabs our attention while exuding elegance.
Unlike most minimalist designs, this renovation flaunts a whole lotta serious thought. Even the wallpanes are etched with a black-and-white design and the ceiling fan coloured a matte black. We can already imagine living here: at the end of every day, you’ll be stepping into a classy abode that looks like it’s from a magazine centrefold.
The dining area is no different with multi-patterned chairs and hanging photographs. Kudos for the styling lighting fixture here too: it’s housed in a quirky glass case with exposed lightbulbs.
As much as we all want to live in a grand mansion, there are often times when we have to make to do with what we have. And in this case, what we have is a stylish HDB flat that knows how to use every nook and cranny. For instance, the flatscreen TV is hung against the wall so there aren’t any unsightly wires and plugs peeking out.

Baby Photography
The feelings you are feeling whenever your baby comes into the world are individuals which are existence altering. The very first look and touch will of the baby only remain as the most amazing memory that's cast into stone inside your mind and heart. For more information on baby photoshoot singapore, visit our website.
Should you be in a position to share the recollections of those beautiful moments with all your family members, whether it is family or buddies that would be better still? This web site publish will reveal to you the child baby photography tips you are able to implement to capture evocative and delightful images of your baby.
Newborn babies don't normally move much, nor will they smile frequently. Nevertheless, they are simply small , cute beings. While your baby is really a newborn, it's the best time for you to capture his/ her form and take close-up shots to show the 'babyness' of the newborn child.
How memorable the images will come out really depends upon your creativeness inside the composition.
Newborn Baby Photography Tips #1 - Make Formulations
One good tip would be to get ready for good shots before the baby comes into the world. You'll have to keep in mind the background plays an essential role in figuring out the end result from the shots. An easy background causes it to be simpler for viewers of the photograph to focus on the primary subject the child baby.
Now, for what else could you use to organize an easy background are white-colored walls and curtains, or possibly a bit of solid colored cloth. Go to a craft and fabric store to discover the various kinds of materials, blankets and pillows. These come in different textures which compromise of velvet, lace, faux fur and bobbles.
Another fabric you will need to me is numerous fundamental solid fabrics for example black and ivory.
