So, it's Csevet that suggests that Maia should seek the help of a clerical witness for the murder investigation and thus introduces him to Thara. This makes me wonder, how does Csevet know Thara in the first place? Obviously he's aware of witnesses for the dead in general and the work they do but he knows Thara specifically is currently present at court at that time. The whole place is a huge rumour mill so I wouldn't be surprised if Csevet had heard the story of the "disgraced former prelate" who'd had to come and beg his cousin for help. He says he doesn't know why Thara renounced his prelacy but i wonder if he's pieced together enough. The way Thara says Csoru is holding the knowledge of what happened with Evru over his head and basically blackmailing him with it shows that the full details of what happened there are not publicly known. Again, I wouldn't be surprised if some brief account of the event had made it into the local papers but I can't imagine the hierophant would've let the story go further than that since he found it all so abhorrent.

So, I wonder if Csevet somehow knows more of the story than he lets on? If he's marnis too (which, c'mon he totally is), perhaps word of what actually happened maybe spread through the local gay community and eventually made its way to Csevet. During his years as a courier, maybe he'd even been to Lohaiso, Sevezho, or Aveio and met Thara previously. I doubt they were ever really friends but acquaintances could definitelybe a possibility. (And maybe in another life they explored each others bodies).

Maybe Csevet recommend Thara's services to Maia not only to help with the murder investigation, but also as a small lifeline for Thara? Working with the Emperor gets him away from Csoru for a bit and gives him a purpose and something to do at court instead of just being surrounded by gossip all the time. Plus, finding the emperor's murder would massively help his damaged reputation. And Csevet knew Maia well enough by then to know that this new emperor is religious and probably wouldn't judge Thara for his past if it ever came to light.

Idk where I'm going with this and I've got no evidence at all but it's fun to speculate and throw my blorbos together sometimes.
