Chaos Sonic: Hah. So we're still talking about that blue pitstain? Whatever. He can be fun to toy with, sure, but he's old news. Last year's model. A failure of a friend and a passable hero. Nine wants him alive for "some reason"—that involves his "intense attachment"—so I won't kill him or anything. I'll leave him alone in a room with Nine over my dead body—or my best friend's wishes, since I cannot bear to refuse him. If I could, though, I'd love the chance to "play" with him some, "rough him up" a little as payback for how he treated my best friend.

Alpha Grim Sonic (answering via writing it down, sign language, transmission, whatever because he's mute): You refer to the blue hedgehog. Once upon a time, my master, Nine, seemed to be troubled when thinking of him. There was a time when Sonic brought a fight to our doorstep, but no matter how Sonic may have hurt him in the past, he has chosen to preserve my master's life. Nine seems to trust him, and Sonic has not threatened his life. So, as I do not have the capacity to experience such things as "emotions", and they would not matter even if I did have the ability, I do not mind if my master associates with Sonic the Hedgehog. If Nine is happy, and the hedgehog does not intend harm upon him, then all is well.

Chaos Sonic: Oh, he's that black hedgehog, right?! Seems cool! I'd love to race him sometime. Of course, I'll fight him too if he intends to lay a finger on my best buddy, but all is well if he plays nice.

Alpha Grim Sonic (answering not by speaking, because he is mute): Shadow the Hedgehog. You do refer to the black hedgehog, do you not? If he intends to bring harm upon my master again, I will not hesitate in removing him. He has not received forgiveness for trying to kill my master during the war. Nine surely allows him to live because he is gracious, but if he so commanded me to I would rip the hedgehog him limb from limb. It is my duty to do what my master commands, and I will be ready should the hedgehog try anything or should my master finally revoke his trust in him.

Sure he's the new Sonic and wants to replace him‚ but after being revived he #*really* wants to replace him and also really dislikes him for how he thinks Sonic treated Nine (and because of Sonic’s place in Nine's #heart). Meanwhile‚ while Alpha Grim Sonic understands why Chaos Sonic would be hung up on how he treats Nine (and eventually understands #wanting to be held to a similar place as Sonic in Nine's heart)‚ he just doesn't get Chaos Sonic's vendetta and obsession #However‚ Alpha Grim Sonic's fist is magnetized to Shadow's face. He is on high alert when Shadow is around Nine‚ and although he is not #supposed to have a personality or feelings‚ he is compelled to fight Shadow and tear him apart. He still harbors a grudge over Shadow's #trying to kill/stop Nine. Meanwhile‚ while Chaos Sonic can understand disliking Shadow for how he treated Nine‚ he doesn't really get the #obsession either. He thinks Shadow could be fun to play and toy with😂 And those are like the only two that these two have incredibly strong #feelings towards when it comes to the people Nine associates with

Polishing my mineral separates now (finally) and reflected light microscopy has been a revelation for this. Above is a partially exposed olivine crystal mounted in Crystalbond; on the left is plane polarised light, and on the right is reflected light. The shiny portion is the only part of the crystal that has been exposed at the surface, which tells me that it needs some more polishing yet to expose any of the good stuff.

That said, in this particular sample, most of the olivine hosted inclusions are oxides (most likely chromium spinel) - which are the brightest things seen in reflected light, and not visible here - or fully crystallised MIs, which look like they need rehomogenising to be of any use. I'm not sure we have the necessary apparatus for that, and it's rather unideal for volatile studies...

Also the general sample prep so far has been... alright. I always do wonder how much I can do at home (where I am infinitely more productive) and so far, this has required only blank slides, Crystalbond, and 3000 grit silicon carbide paper. I have to use an ultrasonic bath to clean my samples of grit on the regular, but given that I'm not presently polishing at finer grades, an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner would probably be sufficient. And Crystalbond requires a hotplate which melts it somewhere between 50 (gooey) and 100C (liquid). That also does not sound untenable, given that mug warming plates can reach upwards of 60C.

The only thing I lack, therefore, is a microscope. Which if I can get the department to lend me, I would be alright...

Mmmmmm thinking about Nine the fox walking around with his two bodyguards (Alpha Grim Sonic and Chaos Sonic) again

The fox and his most devoted halberds who are also possessive bitches

No but like but like I need you to understand

Chaos Sonic who was originally revived to take Sonic's place, to fill the hole in a frienship Nine came to believe as fake, and yet clearly held onto so dearly. Chaos Sonic, who was supposed to be the same as before, except made to be Nine's devoted best friend who would never betray him.

Alpha Grim Sonic who Nine reportedly modeled after the hedgehog he (foolishly) thought of as a friend. A robot copy of Sonic who would not talk back, who would not think, who was only made to serve and protect Nine.

Chaos Sonic, whose time spent with Nine turned programmed allegiance and care into some form of love (obsession and possessiveness)

Alpha Grim Sonic, who was not supposed to think and feel. And yet, with time spent serving Nine and opposing Shadow, he begins to feel and to think (a budding soul forming within his metal frame and existing beyond his programming). A robot created to protect and serve, whose feelings for his creator and master begin to grow over time.

When did his internal drive shift from playing the role of Nine's best friend? When did he begin to resent Sonic for what he did to Nine? When did he begin to want to see Nine happy and safe and accomplished (rather than just simply alive and able to complete his goals)? When did he begin to crave Nine's attention and to make him stop thinking about Sonic?

Wasn't he programmed to be no more than an unfeeling robot, a set of algorithms designed to allow him to fight, protect, serve, and strategize only as needed? Why does he want to hurt Shadow so much (is it really just out of the drive to protect Nine, or is it to make the hedgehog pay?)? He'd follow Nine's orders to the ends of the earth, but why does he worry about Nine when they’re separated? Why has he started to covet Nine's smiles and bouts of happiness? Why does he feel annoyance when Nine converses with Chaos Sonic like he's also not there? Why is he starting to understand why Chaos Sonic resents Sonic, beyond the fact that Chaos Sonic has always fancied replacing him? Alpha Grim Sonic has never wanted to replace the real thing, never understood why Chaos Sonic would, but he's starting to understand jealousy (in the way one begins to feel things they cannot put words to).

Chaos Sonic would tell you it's because he and Nine are best friends. Alpha Grim Sonic would tell you that it's because Nine is his master. Yet, deep down, the two have begun to want to be useful and important to Nine. They want to protect him and see his goals through past any loyalty programming. It does not matter whether such an outcome was inevitable or not (based upon their programming or the holes Nine made them fill in his life), only that they believe that they'd choose this even if Nine tried to let them go.

And Nine... Nine who creates distance between himself and the two robots almost instinctively, as if he's trying not to grow attached (ironic, given the roles he placed the two in, the holes in his life he made them fill after he believed that Sonic had backstabbed him). And yet, just as much as he insists that Alpha Grim Sonic is cold and unfeeling and programmed to serve or that Chaos Sonic is just like that (given the personality programmed into him and his similarities to Sonic) and was programmed to follow orders, he finds himself beginning to value the two as more. He should see them as tools, he tries to think of them as tools. And, yet, over time, the two become irreplaceable agents of his will. He can’t allow himself to believe they really care about them, but he wants them to know that he likes having them around, that no other robot can fill the roles he programmed them for, and no real mobian could be as effective as them (even if it's embarrassing to admit). They become...a comforting presence, especially when he's stuck in the Grim post canon, practically alone, closed off from being able to see Sonic again
