Not a band t-shirt (although there is a NYHC band with the same name, these days). Crazy Eddie was an infamous chain of stereo equipment retailers in the `70s and `80s renowned for their signature bug-eyed advertising and dubious financial shenanigans. Personally speaking, I absolutely SWORE by the outlet on East 57th Street for their selection of import LPs and I quite miss the iterations on 84th and Third and then 86th Street. Sorely missed.

Growing up in Connecticut just outside of NYC, these commercials were ubiquitous. I think I even made my parents take me to one of the stores once. Stopped to see my Uncle Jerry ”Reds” Donohoe on the drive back West. You can’t tell in the photo but he’s covered in tattoos and as a kid I marveled at the art on his body and wanted to be just like him. Jerry tattooed on South Street Philly with the famed Philadelphia Eddie. Jerry still owns the shop today. At 18 I went to him to get my first tattoo and asked to be his apprentice. Uncle Jerry said Hell No! He said “you’re not getting a tattoo and you won’t be giving any tattoos.” And that was that. He was a scary tattooed biker and I did what he said. Stopped to see Drew’s Uncle Jerry on our adventure back West. He lives on 30 acres in a log cabin that reminds me of Longmire’s! (Remember that Netflix show?) Jerry is a bad ass tattoo artist and owns one of the Philadelphia Eddie’s tattoo shops in Philly. When Drew was a teenager he asked Uncle Jerry to give him a tattoo and Jerry snarled “Boy don’t you ever get one.” Jerry was a scary man at times and so Drew listened. 😀😀😀 It was awesome seeing Jerry’s private tattoo museum and photos and memorabilia from his days with his friend Crazy Eddie, who made tattoos popular back in the day. Jerry lives a quiet life, in a cabin in the woods, he eats healthy and is strong and vibrant. Was fun hearing his tales of the heyday of tattooing in Philly and his Crazy Eddie stories! The last time we came to see him was 8 years ago.
