I'm on episode 14 of the mdzs drama and it's like... at this point it doesn't matter to me if they ever kiss on screen (unlikely, i read the book but i figure it's not possible in this format), if they have already written a more romantic romance than most kiss-at-the-end romances, if you can tell by the framing and the way the actors react and make delicate and longing expressions to the point that you can basically read their mind- and oh man do I gotta gush about the actors, having read mdzs even with my mild faceblindness I can immediately tell who is who based on their mannerisms and costuming, and there were lots of times I could practically see the thought processes and mental journeys going on in these character's minds behind their expressions!

Lan Wangji's actor in particular is amazing at portraying the complexities of his internal thought, his intense faces and feelings and constant cheemsing (I think his intense aura of being wronged would've made him an incredible cast for chu wanning!!) was so unbelievably charming- but if we're talking charming, nothing beats Wei Wuxian's actor's boyish and mischeviously lovable charm. You definitely see Wangji try and fail to resist falling deeply in love with him and you understand.

Back to what I was saying though, I think it would be hard to top the romantic amv interlude in the middle of the episode. It's genuinely really exciting seeing such an intense display of intimacy between men through such a romantic feeling backdrop... And I think there's something in particular about MXTX's style that synthesizes the intensity of will-they-won't-they-well-they're-not-going-to-but-we-will-approach-the-edge of queerbait type media and the security of frankly boring media where they feel like they need to establish right away that this is a clean and easy love is love romance guys!!

I just love the messiness of her works so much, I feel like it rides the line so hard (in particular with sy and lbh's age gap/power dynamic) but never actually crosses over when you really analyze it but gets close enough that the edgeriding really makes things more complex and messy and interesting.

I have been liveblogging my CQL thoughts a little less since I found a discord server—and admittedly because I reached the Yi City parts and procrastinated for weeks (😭 pain) but watching the show in order has solidified my single favorite dynamic, which is Lan Wangji being like “I passionately hate Jin Guangyao for betraying my beloved brother and Xue Yang for causing pain to Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen (blorbos from my show, whom I definitely do not project my own relationship onto)” and Wei Wuxian going “oh 😬 so… does that mean you want me to leave the group chat? not like we’re super close or anything, it’s just Xue Yang’s meme game is so strong and Jin Guangyao has calculated the ultimate route for a Murder Twinks night out—”

friends, followers, mutuals, passers-by, exasperated acquaintances, beloved companions, and everyone else. roughly six months ago, to my excitement and disbelief I landed my preferred job right out of school, an extremely demanding and stressful position at a hospital. due to the rigorous training program I found I didn't have the time or energy to do any of my regular hobbies, so I turned back to an old comfort and subsequently started reading much more fanfiction than I ever have in my life.

followers may recall I then decided, with very little thought, to download a tag blacklist and go through the entire ao3 tag for cql (400 pages) and for cql/mdzs (almost 1500 pages). this pursuit, as horrifying as it sometimes was, staved off my breakdown long enough to get my footing at work, and provided hours of entertainment afterwards as I tried to go through all the stuff I'd marked. the vast quantities of ooc, nonsensical, poorly written, confusing, or just silly trash I found on that site have been well worth it, even if I hadn't then found almost 200 works I liked enough to bookmark and recommend to others

I've always wanted to do a rec list, but I haven't had a clear idea of how to go about it responsibly, what with the absolute trash fire that is ao3, until a mutual linked me her own rec list (thank you!!!). along with sharing my passion and my excitement about the works I've found, it also allowed me obsessively categorize, sort, and organize all the fics I have bookmarked, which has given me a much-needed sense of satisfaction during these past few months

and here we are - my training has been completed! I have a week off from work, and when I return I'll be working more independently. finally having finished my training, I have a lot more confident in my capabilities than I even had last week. I feel that I've overcome a monstrous hurdle, plagued at every side by doubts of my competence and fears about my performance. in tandem with this accomplishment, I've decided to make public the rec page I've been working on for so long. I have around 30 fics left in my marked for later, which is far fewer than the 1,660 I began with, and I'm not worried about making it zero before unveiling it. as silly and inconsequential as this project is, relatively speaking, it was a great source of accomplishment and joy for me during this extremely stressful and discouraging time in my life, and I want to thank everyone who hasn't unfollowed me, who's replied to my liveblogs, who's recommended me fics to read, who's laughed and commiserated with me, and who's shared advice or feedback about the organization of the page, especially lesbianstorm, who's been here since the very beginning <3

I've spoken before about finding something new to occupy my time, because I don't know how much cql I still have left in me, but I thought it would be a nice send-off to at least watch the show one more time since this story and these characters mean to much to me, and since it's brought me close to so many wonderful people. thank you all again, and know that your presence here means the world to me

something that makes me real sad is that since the CQL is a live action, the gestures and movements are more prominent as the characters speak. And since Wei Wuxian is a hyperactive character prancing around, it's very noticeable how much he sticks to Jiang Cheng in the beginning. When they are being driven out of the inn, he very explicitly has a whole arm around Jiang Cheng until they come face to face with Jin Zixuan. When Lan Wangji places the Silencing Charm on him, Wei Wuxian's immediate response is to start tugging at him. Like I haven't gotten far (and it is in fact a shame that we didn't get the piggy back ride.....like if Wangxian canon why censor the Chengxian piggy back ride /lh) in the drama but knowing the story is enough to make me very very sad.

You know what relationship I'm obsessed with? JGY and LWJ. I feel like JGY's opinions about LWJ are barely any better than SMS's but you see. That's also Er-ge's beloved didi. Which means JGY will straight up kill for him. But also thank god LWJ politely declines to join them for tea.

I do love how LXC sees LWJ lowkey kidnapping a random guy who's hugging a donkey and his reaction is literally "Glad to see you're having fun, Wangji! This doesn't seem like a big enough crisis to delay my bureaucracy-themed date with A-Yao so I will ask no other questions. Don't magically gag our guest. One underrated aspect of MDZS is that usually when you have a love story where one of the lovers die, the lover who is alive is responsible for the dead person to come back to life. Think of princesses whose tears are life-giving, or princes who deliver the true love's kiss, or quests to the underworld seeking one's beloved. MDZS, though? LWJ is all but irrelevant when it comes to WWX's resurrection. So much so that even CQL, which plays up all romance tropes they possibly can, keeps that irrelevance
