Uber is scrapping thousands of Jump bikes
Tumblr media
One of my favorite expressions of disgust is "The only time I wouldn't piss on him is if he was on fire."
Well, the world is on fire and the only time I wouldn't piss on Uber's Jump dockless ebikes is in a pandemic, when bicycle transport has never been more essential.
Uber - and other dockless transport companies like Bird - unilaterally filled our cities' streets with ewaste litter - unsafe electric vehicles that endangered their riders and pedestrians in use, and blocked sidewalks for wheelchair users the rest of the time.
These companies compounded their misdeeds by refusing to help track down customers who had hit-and-run pedestrians, even when their customers' victims were critically injured.
(and, of course, Bird threatened to sue me for explaining how you could buy their abandoned vehicles from city impounds and convert them to personal vehicles)
https://boingboing.net/2019/01/11/flipping-the-bird.html
But you know what? There's a pandemic on. People - especially vulnerable, low-waged, "essential" workers are going to great lengths to avoid public transit. Bike riding is resurgent.
All is forgiven, Uber.
Oh, wait.
Uber has scrapped 20,000 of its Jump bicycles because of a fall in revenue, sending them to the landfill rather than continuing to service them or donating them to the cities they colonized with them.
https://bikesharemuseum.com/20000-jump-bikes-are-going-to-die/
What's more, after they were caught, Uber lied about it - only to have their official narrative contradicted by internal whistleblowers who confirmed to Bikeshare Museum that the bikes are being scrapped "by the containerload." And they've got pics.
https://twitter.com/bikesharemuseum/status/1265082035380670465
Uber has also fired the entire engineering team for Jump - a team that scratch-designed an entirely new set of internals that they alone know how to maintain and fix. Ebay is filling up with salvaged parts.
"We also can’t emphasize enough how disgusting it is for UBER to scrap 20,000 bikes in the midst of a pandemic where bicycles have literally become an object of survival. These could be transportation for the many who have been brought to financial ruin during COVID-19."

Daikin Container Technology Chosen for Guava Shipment
A landmark shipment of guava fruit from Taiwan to the USA was completed successfully this January with the help of controlled atmosphere (CA) technology from Daikin Reefer, a leading supplier of refrigeration and climate control solutions for freight containers. Headquartered in Japan, Daikin Reefer is the refrigeration business division of global refrigeration, air conditioning and climate control provider Daikin Industries, Ltd.
Taiwan – dubbed the “Fruit Kingdom” for its ideal growing conditions that support a great variety of tropical fruits – is the first Asian country and just the second in the world after Mexico permitted to export guava to the USA, following an historic agreement signed in October 2019. The trade deal was 10 years in the making, reflecting rigorous US sanitary and phytosanitary protocols to prevent unwanted pests from entering the country, specifically in this case fruit flies.
Daikin Active CA was selected by the shipper to comply with the demanding cold treatment quarantine process while maintaining optimal transport conditions for the premium guava. Cold treatment, used internationally to prevent the spread of fruit flies without the need for pesticides, requires the core pulp of fruit to be maintained consistently below a certain temperature for a specified number of days during transport. In the case of Taiwanese guava, US rules specify that the core of the fruit must be kept below 1 degree Celsius for 17 consecutive days.
The Daikin Active CA systems reduces oxygen and carbon dioxide and boosts nitrogen levels to quickly put fresh produce into a state of hibernation. This helps to maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of a wide range of fresh produce, even on the longest of journeys. Combining CA with cold treatment helps to counteract potential chilling injuries and other negative effects of holding higher maturity fruit in a low temperature environment over extended periods. This ensures the best possible cargo care and quality outturn along with regulatory compliance.
The containerload of guava was shipped from Tainan in southern Taiwan early this January via the Port of Kaohsiung. The consignment arrived on January 14 at the US West Coast Port of Los Angeles and, following immediate inspection by US Department of Agriculture officials, was cleared and released for onward delivery within 24 hours.
As well as providing its Active CA and container refrigeration technology, Daikin Reefer supported the landmark export with close monitoring of temperature, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels inside the container during the entire shipment. Both the exporter and importer were highly satisfied with the shipment outturn and the guava were distributed to the market within hours. The entire shipment sold out in a single day.
“To ship guava using Daikin Active CA from Taiwan to the USA is an exciting project and we are very proud to be at the forefront of this important trade development that allows more overseas consumers to enjoy the flavour of famous Taiwanese tropical fruits,” said Mark Wu, President of Top Quality Produce.
“We are delighted that Daikin Active CA and refrigeration container technology was selected for this historic shipment, ensuring that the top-quality reputation of Taiwanese guava was maintained while meeting all the required safety controls. To our knowledge this is the first use of CA container technology combined with cold treatment in the international transport of guava,” said Ah Huat Goh, General Manager, Global Marketing & Service, Reefer Department at Daikin Reefer. “We look forward to supporting the growth of this exciting new export trade for Taiwan.”

CargoSphere To Distribute Digital LCL Rates In Collaboration With CaroTrans
CargoSphere announced about it’s collaboration with CaroTrans to allow the global NVOCC (non-vessel operating common carrier) and ocean freight consolidator the distribution of digital LCL (less than containerload) import and export rates on CargoSphere.
The integration of the new API makes the data stream completely automatic and eliminates time consuming and hard manual labour required in management and distribution.
CaroTrans and its forwarder customers can now avail streamlined processing to raise productivity, operational performance and data accuracy.
“We’re thrilled to complete this integration and provide our forwarder customers with a faster, more effective and seamless way to access LCL rates on CargoSphere. It was a pleasure working with CargoSphere’s team who facilitated a fast and easy implementation. Providing digital connectivity helps our customers respond faster and deliver a better customer experience,” said Chris Wilson President of CaroTrans.
“CaroTrans was a prominent early adopter of the CargoSphere Rate Mesh, and we are grateful for their early support. It’s truly exciting to remove the manual touches and deliver confidential rates in an automated way. We’re taking a vital step in connecting CaroTrans to their valued clients while safeguarding data quality as our eSUDS carrier integration and ecosystem growth accelerates,” said Neil Barni, Managing Director of CargoSphere.

#1yrago Not just crapgadgets: Sony's enterprise CCTV can be easily hacked by IoT worms like Mirai
Tumblr media
The unprecedented denial-of-service attacks powered by the Mirai Internet of Things worm have harnessed crappy, no-name CCTVs, PVRs, and routers to launch unstoppable floods of internet noise, but it's not just faceless Chinese businesses that crank out containerloads of vulnerable, defective-by-design gear -- it's also name brands like Sony.
A new report from SEC Consult reveals that Sony's enterprise-grade IPELA Engine IP Cameras (intended for use by government agencies and businesses) have a seemingly deliberate backdoor that has been present for at least four years, which takes the form of two undocumented accounts called "primana" and "debug." Once these usernames are added to Mirai's arsenal of login/password guesses, the worm will find it easy to take them over, too.
That's significant for two reasons: first, because it represents a large pool of vulnerable devices that can make Mirai attacks even worse, and second, because Mirai doesn't need to confine its mischief to harnessing one person's device to attack another person -- Mirai could be modified to take over vulnerable devices and use them to stage attacks on other devices on the local network. A vulnerable device on your LAN is a potential gateway to all its systems, and that's bad news for the grownup businesses and agencies that trusted Sony over no-name cheapie vendors.
Of course, that doesn't mean you're better off buying no-names! Cybereason reports that it's found equally devastating vulnerabilities in white-label IP cameras sold under many different brand-names on Ebay and Amazon -- these cameras can be take over via the internet through the shared password "888888" -- and these devices default to opening holes in your firewall through a peer-to-peer NAT traversal service. That means that they're vulnerable even if you have them behind a firewall.
These white-label devices are especially pernicious because it's hard to produce a list of all the vulnerable systems, as they traffic under so many names. Last March, Rotem Kerner revealed that a single Chinese manufacturer was behind over 70 different brands of vulnerable DVRs that thieves had used to break into merchants' networks to monitor their CCTVs and plan their robberies.
