MY ADVICE TO FIRST TIME COMPETITORS 1. Don’t expect advice or help for free. Just because competing is your dream don’t expect others to help you get there. Pay for advice, pay to learn, pay for your friends and family to watch your show because not everyone cares about bodybuilding as much as you do. If you do receive free coaching and tips, or advice, or free personal training etc consider yourself lucky. It’s an expensive hobby, if you can’t afford it, work hard and save up before embarking on your new journey. 2. Prepare to compete WITHOUT sponsors and handouts. If you work hard enough, sponsors will find you. 3. Don’t underestimate the power of good food, good sleep and good supplements. Skimping on any of these 3 will hurt you long term. There should be longevity in this sport if the above are done correctly. 4. Be competitive, be self motivated and be a good loser. Don’t settle for anything but perfection but when someone beats your “perfect”, suck it up and be nice. 6. We all get delusional at times and it will be your undoing unless you have someone telling you like it is. It won’t be easy to hear but you need to hear it in order to progress. Keep in mind family and friends are NOT good at this. Usually it’s the judges at your show that slap the delusion out of us by not placing us first. You won’t like it but it’s necessary for growth. Failure to listen will keep you in the same spot year after year. 7. Find the truth and read between the lines. For example: “too big” is code for too fat, “too lean” is code for no muscle, “too muscly” I find is code for no shape or no waist which can also mean TOO FAT! In real life it’s difficult to truly lose by being any of these things so again, look in the mirror, let the ego go and assess what your physique looks like. I find comparing my symmetry poses next to the Olympia pros truly puts things into perspective. 8. Enjoy the process and enjoy the experience! Competing should enhance your life not take from it. #freeadvice #freetips #firsttimecompetitors #personaltrainer #posingcoach #compprepcoach @nickjonesworldchampion @angelajonesfitness @gentecnutrition
