omgg i just read your Earthborn Shep and Thane post and ykkkk who else can have that past criminal angst? Earthborn Shep and Jack. Like they both had to do whatever it takes to survive at the end of the day. Like Shel gets why she likes to stay under the engine room alone and needs the noise and the solitude to feel safer and all the trust issues they both have. YES EXACTLY! fuck I wish I could've brought it up to Jack ingame when she says we wouldn't understand her. I wish earthborn Shepard had to chance to say actually they're very familiar with the world she's currently living in.

Shepard used to be in gangs since the earliest memory they could recall! With no parents who ever claimed them and no support system, they had to go out there and put food at the table themselves before they knew what algebra was!

Earth, the human's homeworld and cradle, has treated Shepard so badly. he same planet you sacrifice everything to save in ME3 is the same one that let freeze without a home in some alley.

The only option was to pick up a gun and fight for survival, run with scummy people, and befriend the lowest of the low in order to avoid getting stabbed in the back. The government hid those suffering kids in the shadows of glamourise buildings and pristine gardens for alien tourists to gawk at.

And Shepard's saving grace was the fact the army was willing to give you food and shelter in exchange for being willing to die for them. It just makes being labelled a war hero all the more bittersweet. People didn't care about humanity's saviour when they were a kid rotting in the street.

Shepard would completely understand Jack and defend her against Cerberus. Have her back when it comes to confrontations with the crew. Old habits die hard, and even Shepard still sleeps with a gun hidden under the pillow, so who are you to judge Jack sleeping in the engine room.

Maybe Shepard goes there too when stress becomes too much, and they revert back to their teen self looking for any shelter from the rain. They go to the engine room and sit in the corner, reminding themselves they're stronger than anything thrown their way.

Maybe it was Anderson who first noticed Shepard doing that in the first Normandy and kept it their secret. Knowing their history and never putting them on the spot, which is why Shepard is so chill with Jack's requests and behaviour.

In the shadowbroker info, it shows that Jack activity searched online about Shepard's history, watched the spectre ceremony halfway through before closing it, and even looked into your achievements. She was clearly frustrated with you being another decorated ship captain who had every opportunity handed to them on a silverplate.

If only she would've dug more and found the articles about Shepard's hidden past, the interviews with the gang memebers who used to be in your close circle, the paparazzi shots where your clothes slipped to reveal a part of a tattoo, speculations about its meaning and if it's related to a gang symbol.

All those things the alliance pays triple the market price just to keep hidden from the first page results of search engines. Keeping the stained glass imagine of The Commander Shepard as clean as ever, polishing your history until nothing is left but a symbol of humanity's greatest achievements, not the stain that is your attempt at survival after your own kin abandoned you.

Earthborn Shepard is just so interesting! That sort of scandal would follow you for life. Old habits and bad reputations. Especially with a paragon, Shep, who's all kind and proper, that used to be an actual monster in the streets.

Even more sweet when you see Jack again in ME3 and know she followed in your steps and left that life behind. Finding a reason to live besides pure survival. I always let her punch me because nothing would phase earthborn Shepard, who knows how this is normal, friendly things in the criminal world. Who used to have their own friends to wrestle with for fun. Who did a lot of stupid things like play russian rullet in their youth.

Playing Mass Effect is so fun and I get so excited to talk to my fiance about it until I remember he's a Commander Shepard and I don't want to accidentally bring up Bad Memories or just say something Awkward and/or Weird,,,,throwback to the one time I said I wanted to [REDACTED] his husband sexual-style hahaha,,,ha,,,,,,but its fun though! Oh tolerance tested looks like it’ll fuck me right up

Oh ho ho this one WILL So this is actually like the only bit of my "canon compliant" shep's (Colonist/War Hero) backstory that I've ever put down in writing, yeah, this is the one I call [REDACTED] and who's not far off being feral in her own special way. It's unfortunately Garrus POV shakarian in the making lmao. Tolerance Tested has been stalled for ages and at this rate I might cannibalize it to use in Follow My Lead and various other stuff.

Late night, somewhere after the headlong sprint of their assaults on Feros, Noveria and Therum - missions that blended together in an endless parade of horror and bloodshed - but before the sucker-punch that was losing kin on Virmire, the team had gathered together in the mess hall to share a drink - or five - and bond.

“I’m still surprised you saved that Rachni.” Wrex rumbled, tiny eyes not narrowed in anger that would have been well deserved considering the Krogan people’s own history with the terrifying, scuttling monstrosities. “I wouldn’t’ve…”

Shepard shrugged, one fingernail absentmindedly tapping the side of the glass bottle in her dominant hand. “She seemed sincere in her promise to do better, I can’t condemn a whole race based off something I barely know about.”

“You could have asked any of us, you have no assurances that she will follow through on her promises after all.” Liara murmured, shuddering slightly at the thought of the Rachni queen, even though she had chosen not to join them on that mission, unable to face what her mother had become.

“Potted histories and old grudges don’t improve relations with anyone.” This time, she frowned. “I can’t judge someone based off how some of their species have acted.”

This time, it was one of the humans that felt the need to scoff. Dark hair, a chip on her shoulder towards everyone but a name which gave meaning to her distrust of him in particular - Williams. “Commander you of all people should know that some races-“

She was cut off sharply as Shepard stood jerkily, the movement like a subconscious attempt to remove herself from the situation. There was a silence so thick it could have been cut with a knife as, to the confusion of the non-humans, every one of the alliance crewmembers tensed. Seconds passed, Shepard seemingly disentangling herself mentally from something unpleasant, and Williams tried again, this time in a far smaller voice. “I mean - you - uh - you were on Mindoir, you saw what they are li-”

Again she was cut off, this time verbally. “Chief, I was on Mindoir, and last I checked, you weren’t.” Her green eyes were colder than the deepest ocean, voice shaking ever so slightly from a fury she didn’t let out. “I was on Mindoir and that’s why I don’t judge any race. That’s why I don’t condemn anyone.”

It was Tali, of course, who sought to remove their commander’s frigid fury from her chief gunnery officer. “Mindoir, wasn’t that the human colony that the Batarians attacked in 'seventy?”

Shepard’s gaze snapped over to her and, for a second, the young quarian seemed to shrink back. Then, just as fast as her head had turned, Shepard’s anger drained away into quiet, humble honesty. It was well done, Garrus had to admit. Whilst he wouldn’t have put his neck on the line for the baseline insubordinate and often openly xenophobic woman, Tali was far more empathetic. Added to that, Shepard was fond of the kid and as such, profoundly protective of her in the way that self-appointed elder siblings always were; If anyone could redirect Shepard, it would be her.

“It was. I- I was there.” Shepard admitted, voice soft and eyes a thousand light years away. “I was just a kid and I- we lost everything. We had a farm there. I only survived because the slaver who found me decided to let me hide instead. Told me to remain quiet and tossed a ration pack into the grain silo I was hiding in. I stayed there for five days, until I heard voices - human voices - outside.”

“He... let you live?” Joker asked, clearly fishing for verbal confirmation to what they all had interpreted.

“Yeah.” She replied, and her voice seemed to have made the trip to join her eyes a thousand light years away, back on Mindoir and back in time. “For a long time, I thought he wanted me to suffer - to lose everyone and hurt from that but… I realised eventually, he was able to let me hide because I wasn’t screaming, even though everyone else was. He could pretend he didn’t see me and, well, I get it now. I was angry when I was younger, but once I joined the Alliance and got my face trampled into the dirt too, I realised that he was just another footsoldier following orders he didn’t agree with. Kinda hard to view whole races as black-and-white when you’re only alive because one of your species’ greatest enemies took pity on you.”

💗 What helps you feel closer to your source (in a positive way)?

Reading (fan)fiction with basilisk or snake protagonists. I actually took my name from my favorite. Although that makes me feel less close to my "source," and more close to my species than anything else; you'd be surprised what authors get right and what they don't. Comparatively, I have no love for my source.

👬 How do you feel about doubles?

I love doubles; I'm in a MEkin Discord and a majority of the people in there are all Sheps, and I vibe with them all hard. (I mean, it's not exactly a mystery why there might be a lot of us when you look at the circumstances of where we come from... I don't think any Shep I've talked to died of old age, you know?) With that I said, I do feel aggro when I meet non-MEkin who go by "Shepard" in 'kin spaces, like a cat seeing itself in a mirror. Which is bizarre and which I lack any explanation for, because it's not exactly an uncommon name so I don't get why my brain decided that non-Shep Shepards raise the ol' hackles.

Anyways, someday I want to start a band of me and other Shepards, and I want to call it "Shepard and the Shepards."

🎙️ What's the biggest difference between you and your canon self?

For my species, basilisks have a secondary eyelid they can use to avoid killing someone or petrifying someone with their gaze. Basilisks of any sex can have plumage; it's just more common in males, not a male-only phenomena. We're also, I believe, not as sterile as the canon or as the mages from my world presumed. Basilisks require a far more intricate magical ritual to create than just "toad sits on a chicken egg until it hatches," as well, with subspecies of basilisk depending on the animal parts factored into the ritual. I've written quite a bit on the specifics of my species on my page on our website, here.
