Story - summarized

Everyone ages, but not Yexiao. Ten years could pass by, and not a single part of her will change. She used to live with a family of three and spend time painting with the little girl. Unfortunately, the other villagers were scared of her unique trait and formed a mob to try to run her out of town,

The little girl rushed to defend Yexiao, leaving the child with a scar on her arm. Tearfully, the two of them said goodbye. So, Yexiao drifted from town to town, never staying longer than a few years at a time. And every time she left, her memories would fade. It was like starting over with the seasons, but it still hurt to let go of something so precious.

During one of her moves, she comes to Cloudcrest, to the home she currently stays in. An elderly lady lives there, too, and Yexiao finds contentment caring for her and painting the blossoms in the yard. Just as she is getting comfortable, a young man finds her and asks about her paintings. He mentions a legendary designer of old who would make similar paintings to Yexiao’s.

She worries that this man has figured out her secret. After he leaves, she packs her belongings and tries to leave. But the old lady falls ill, and while her last living child lives in town, she still needed attention. Yexiao decides to wait until the lady is better before leaving Cloudcrest.

Seasons change, but the old lady is still sick. When spring comes, the young man comes to call again. This time, he shows a painting that came from the same yard that Yexiao and the old lady live in. It’s not Yexiao’s painting, so that means it has to be the old lady’s.

But something in the painting is familiar. Memories resurface, and Yexiao asks to check the old lady’s arm. Sure enough, there is a scar there - the same scar the little girl had when she defended Yexiao from the angry mob.

This is that little girl! A hundred years have passed, and she is still here.

The young man knows, but he never had any attention of tattling on her. His name is Qin Yi, and he only wants her help in finding the Puzzle Solver. Otherwise, he leaves her alone.

Yexiao enjoys the rest of the season painting with the old lady in the yard.

Connections

-Qin Yi asks if Yexiao is the Puzzle Solver. In Vol. 1, you help Nikki find the Puzzle Solver to unlock the secret of Leonid’s Manuscript.

-This is not the first time Yexiao has had to deal with her immortality. In Mind Maze Ch. 5, she used to live in Banyan Town, which was a perfect village that lasted forever - until waters from the Ocean of Memories seeped through and slowly destroyed everything, except Yexiao.

-While the Yexiao we know was “born” on the Ark (and therefore can’t age or die by natural causes), we time travel to the past in the Dunhuang hell event and see Yexiao working for Queen Joyeux. This may very well be Yexiao’s “original self,” who could still age and change.

Fun Facts

-During the hell event, when Nikki and Momo collect wishes in Luming’s place, they find Yexiao’s wish. All she wants is to live a content life, to enjoy her life, and that nothing changes again.

-In Chinese symbology, peaches are tied to immortality.

-The old lady has severe dementia, which not only impacts your memory but disrupts certain behavioral patterns or functions. It’s why she gets stuck on certain “loops” like asking for someone’s parents or insisting she go outside to find someone.

Papyracetae

The “paper whales” represent an even more extreme modification of the Auranauts’ already extreme body plan. They have evolved a separate circulatory system specifically to pump hydrogen-and-helium-rich blood to their second lung, allowing them to much more effectively regulate their buoyancy and fly much higher into the atmosphere. Given their size, they are ultra-lightweight and quite delicate, with highly pneumatized bodies that are almost more air than tissue. These huge animals have long inspired mythology and are considered by many cultures to be divine beings.

Stargliders

Pictured: the common Starglider, the only species to be represented with multiple preserved specimens.

These are the smallest and the highest-flying of the Papyracetae, drifting on air currents far above the clouds. Many species of air plankton use these currents as a highway to migrate, and the Stargliders intercept them as they travel. Because of their preferred habitat, they are difficult to study, and even dead ones are hard to find as they are frequently shredded by wind and other flying animals on the descent. Due to this, it is likely that there are many undiscovered species inhabiting the skies of Strix. Currently, only the common Starglider has been studied to any decent extent, and all other described species have only been based on single dead specimens or brief sightings of live ones. Their true range is unknown, but they are assumed to live worldwide.

Sky Shepherds

Pictured: the cloudcrester, a species seen over both the Moon Sea and Great Southern Sea during their respective wet seasons.

While all other Papyracetae are solitary, sky shepherds live in small groups and work together to herd air plankton into tight balls that they can then consume. Migrating between the north and south annually, these giants keep pace with the seasonal rain and the air plankton that follow it. These shepherds are the loudest creatures on the planet, producing infrasonic trumpeting noises that can travel hundreds of miles for communication between groups. The Terebroids are particularly tuned into this frequency, and use these calls to track down their prey from miles away.

Monarchs

Pictured: the sky queen, the largest of them all, is sighted most frequently above the semi-arid plains of the midlands.

These are the largest animals on Strix by wingspan. With only three known species, they are not especially common, but they are an incredible sight when encountered. With wingspans up to 200 feet across, these massive creatures patrol the skies, scooping up air plankton into their gaping mouths. Like all Papyracetae, they are seasonal migrants, but seem to prefer the mid-latitudes more than their relatives. They are rarely sighted at the poles or over large bodies of water, and they avoid high winds and turbulence lest their paper-thin bodies be damaged. Mysterious and graceful, they are truly a wonder of evolution.

My map of Ever After

A little explanation, in my rewrite of ever after high it's controlled by a Royal Council. Which is made up of like 12 of the most powerful Fairytale families and led by Snow White. So these are the territories they control plus the evil queen's. 

Within each of these states are smaller provinces or vassal states where other stories are based. All of these provinces still call themselves kingdoms but they're not really big. Like it's usually like a village or two and a castle not like a full country.

Some of the countries I'm not sure who controls because I haven't sorted out who's all on the Royal Council. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. 

Heartglen - Snow White.

The center of power and heart of Ever After. Most famous fairy tales like Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, & Cinderella, are located here. Also Ever After High. 

Bellport - Sleeping Beauty/Beauty & the Beast

It is mostly controlled by the Beauty and the Beast Family since Sleeping Beauty changes every hundred years.

Towergrove - Rapunzel

The Charmings also live here; they control a province called Cliffpass.

Shimmertide - Princess & Pea/The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid technically rules the sea but her territory is closely connected to the Shimmertide Isles. 

Bonepeak - Evil Queen

Technically this is a tributary state. It's controlled by Heartglen but is still recognized as independent. 

Dustfall - 1001 Arabian Nights

Dawnforest - 12 Dancing Princesses

Story - summarized

Jiang Xitong is in the middle of preparations for the upcoming moon festival. Everything has to be perfect and accurate. Then, she gets the news that, since the museum will be partnering with the Culture Bureau, there will be a promotional video for the mid-autumn festival in Cloudcrest.

And Xitong has to be in it.

She doesn't mind at first... until she reads the script. It jettisons history in favor of petty gossip: the Lunar Goddess and the Jade Rabbit have a love affair!

And Xitong is expected to talk about this stuff in the video.

Instead, she talks about legends and myths as colorful markers of history: no two eras have the same interpretation of myths. To add detail to her mini lecture, Xitong uses a flute on set to play one of her favorite songs about the Lunar Goddess.

When the video comes out, Xitong's part becomes a hit. Everyone now looks forward to the music at the festival. The video cut out the rest of her lecture, but the good news is it left out all the love affair nonsense.

And Xitong now has ideas for the rest of the festival planning.

Connections

-Qing Yumo works at the Culture Bureau, and she and Jiang Xitong do not get along. The one time they came close to agreeing was in Yumo's Reflection for Striking Beauty, where they commiserated over the fashion choice that everyone voted for.

-Jiang Xitong is a stickler for historical accuracy, but she also has a creative side. She and her sister, Jiang Beixi, play a poetry game together in her Reflection for Morning Blossoms.

-Xitong's grandma is a huge reason for her emphasis on tradition and history. Not only did she comfort her as a child and tell fantastic stories, but also because in the story for Wishes on the Cloud hell event, we learn that the Jiangs' grandma has dementia. Sticking close to history is a way for Xitong to stay connected to her grandma.

Fun Facts

-This was the first suit to include a flute. The second is Red Maiden, from Yueniang.

-When Jiang Xitong first saw the dress she had to wear for the promotional video, she doesn't know who made the "atrocious" design. Since this was a collab with the Culture Bureau, it might have been one of Qing Yumo's designs, since Xitong finds all of Yumo's suits ridiculous and mocking.

King Breakers of Ironhold are boisterous and daring, living each day as if it’s their last. Shadowmancers of Blackmantle are secretive masters of darkness and shadow, dwelling underground in volcanic cities and monasteries. Not much is known about them, other than they are the one clan who still has reservations of teaching the ways of the Magi to ‘outsiders’. Still, they grudgingly support the Great Compromise and honor their sacred vow to the other four clans, by deed if not by word.

Truth Seekers of Thunder Keep live along the shorelines of great islands and archipelagos where storms are common. They are enchanted by thunder, lightning, hurricanes and waterspouts. One island has been dedicated as an ever expanding repository of their knowledge; a fabled library known as Thunder Keep. They are dedicated to learning the truth of magic, science, nature, which in turn is recorded for future generations.

World Singers of Cloudcrest offer friendship to all around them. Living near rainforests, they prefer lush overgrown cliffs and rolling green hills to build their homes and farms and live near windmills and watermills, using the powers of nature to sustain themselves. They live peacefully with all kinds of animals, including normally dangerous predators of all types.
