As a team of three, all wanting to lead pitches, it wasn't a simple matter of swinging leads last weekend. 🪢 Each pitch was a rotation of gear and a potentially some rope adjustment too. I actually managed to go off route turning a simplel traverse on Outside Edge Route (VD) into something a lot harder. I knew i'd gone wrong but was mislead by an in situ nut that I found, convincing myself I was on the right route. In hindsight, that was a probably a bit of gear someone had bailed on. 🧗🏻‍♂️ The other key issue this little diversion introduced was our friend 'rope drag'. I've never had such a fight pulling ropes through. Day 91 in my 100-day project, Imaginary Places. This is a place for celebration. And an anecdote that will tell you to never give up (hrm, I might build this up a bit too much): My love lost his Stetson at the opening of the club Skeppet, one year ago. He thought it was lost forever and that made him sad because it was beautiful (and also because it was a gift from me). We haven't been to that club since (it's a great club, we‘ve just missed out on every opportunity) but as we passed by the place this weekend my love thought he could just ask for it anyway. And there it was in the bottom of their lost and found box. Very dirty, and probably a bit offended, but all the same otherwise. This is me and @lainftmountain at the summit of the Eiger yesterday evening. We climbed the classic heckmair route, the most obvious line of weakness that creeps its way up the mountain. It is an ascent that most alpinists will dream to do in their lifetime, something that even non mountaineers have even read about and seen movies on. The climbing is so varied, sometimes beautifully interesting and other times quite demanding and tedious! With its calf burning icefields, it’s traverses on ledges, the aiding of fixed lines, the sections of steep dry tooling, plenty of awkward slanting chimneys and some surprisingly sketchy “non cruxes”!

Having climbed this in 2 days I am in awe of Ueli Steck 😮 climbing this huge face in 2 hours and 22 minutes! Although, I must say that my favourite bit was sleeping on the face at the death bivy. We had a full moon 🌕 shining over us, we could see all the piste bashers and lights from the town below in the distance and the moment was very calm and peaceful.

Maladière : Qui s'y frotte s'y pique only max 6c!

To me it felt harder…climbing limestone rock in scorching heat is not something I am good at. I felt like I was melting and by the end of the morning I was covered in sunburn even wearing factor 50 sun cream! Tonight I look like one of those English ladies who has sat in the sun rubbing oil all over her skin all day! The route was quite nice although we did a lot of traversing on bad feet which felt fairly dramatic for me, this feeling of slipping around on slightly polished rock in the sun! Shamefully on the 6c pitch I ended up aiding it because I failed to reach over to the good holds on the right after the corner!
