What kind of movies do you like to watch? I made a list of 42 Hindi movies from between 2010 and now for Bollywood recs, but once I finished I realized I don't know which genres you like so I don't know which recommendations to give you! 😅
As for stuff out right now, I liked Vikram Vedha. It gets really engrossing once Hrithik Roshan shows up like 20 minutes into the movie, though I don't think the songs were that memorable (and I thought one didn't fit in the movie at all, lol.) I had fun watching it, though I think it could have been stronger if it didn't explicitly explain things to the audience so much and had been more subtle about its points. For Indian movies in general that aren't Bollywood, I loved Ponniyin Selvan which is historical fiction plus political intrigue and some action. (The female characters were excellent I cannot stress this enough, and I genuinely loved so many of the characters.) I also really enjoyed Kantara (especially the climax which gave me chills!) which looks at themes of man vs nature, man vs man, and who can really 'own' or have stewardship over the land and uses religious traditions from coastal Karnataka in South India to explore that.
ooh you sound much more expert than me, haha! I mostly just watched all the biggest movies from like 10~20 years ago, so some of my favs are Kal Ho Naa Ho, Jab We Met, and Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham.
I like all genres except horror, but I especially enjoy movies that have good songs and are fun and upbeat. I'd be psyched to see any of your recommendations! I haven't watched very many movies lately but maybe I'll get back into it! Thank you!

How is the Kantara Kannada movie? Are there any reviews?
This review is from a Tamilian, from Chennai. I don’t speak Kannada but can fairly understand the language. The way South India deals with social subjects is very unique and diversified. Fresher Sarkari Naukari
Tumblr media
Malayalam movies predominantly try to keep it more regional and ethnic and they believe the more ethnic it is, the higher it has international appeal. Tamil movies predominantly keep it regional and political rather than ethnic. It is very hard not to politicize the subject if it speaks about society in general. Telugu movies make it too commercial where the social subject turns down to be a mere backdrop, while commercials take the center stage. And here comes the Kannada movie “Kantara” …. they have made it more regional and religious. And … that’s done perfectly well. (Visit blog : Fresher Sarkari Naukari)
Tumblr media
Kannada movies had long been criticized for not making commercial flicks. Since KGF (for a Tamilian) they had been taking it straight, delivering hits with a pan-India appeal. Kantara is on similar lines - a commercial masala flick but what makes it unique and distinct is how the script incorporates the roots of Kannada coastal regions, its tribal culture, belief in demigods, the tribal emotions, and native cultures including Yakshagana, Paddana, Bhoota Kola, Daivaradhane, Naagaradhane, and Kambala sport. (Visit blog : Fresher Sarkari Naukari)
Tumblr media
The hero is Panchurulii - a demi-god that protects the tribals. The story travels across 3 timelines, starting from the 18th century to date. The demi-god protects the people and the ones who protect those people. What happens if someone becomes a threat to those tribals??- Is demi-god just a myth or does it have emotions? - The script is too convincing without any religious bias. It's not about whether you are a believer or non-believer of god, folk tales, and myths. It's about what you become when you believe in your protector. The story is simple - forest land encroachment and the attempts of the local lords to appropriate land that belongs to poor tribal people for development, in the guise of being benevolent. It speaks about the crime and loot of forest resources, the discriminations tribals face and how they get exploited by rich landlords and the govt. It would have been politicized if it’s made in TN or Kerala, which means we will be missing a wonderful script on demi-god Panjuruli. (Visit blog : Fresher Sarkari Naukari)
Tumblr media
The script is simple in native dialect on myths, superstition and folklore - an unemployed hero who drinks, smokes, fist fights 10 guys single-handedly, and harasses the “employed’ heroine who’s a forest guard to force her to fall in love with him. That’s a typical tribal masculine mentality. There’s body shaming, there’s slut shaming, and everything. But that’s one part - the other part is about a belief system where a hero wants a god to save him, and when the god doesn’t turn up, he turns to a god to protect his people. God is not an emotion or myth. It’s a human emotion that turns myths into reality. BGM - this is one of the best BGM from the Kannada industry that echoes the sounds of a deep forest. The 1st 20 mins and the last 20 mins of bgm break the roof so effortlessly.
Like every movie - there’s a climax fight sequence that’s unrealistic with macho commercial shots. But what makes Kantara unique is the sequence - ” after” - the climax fight. Those last few mins steal the show. The way the god teaches people to stay united and peaceful - then disappears as if the job done is so intense and powerful. As a Tamilian, I welcome this attempt to incorporate local culture, customs, and traditions in movie scripts. The question of whether it’s intellectual or not is entirely personal. We should question myths but not question the trust behind questioning myths. Some myths are the base of our belief system toward peace and harmony. A strong and intense message from Kantara (means forest). (Visit blog : Fresher Sarkari Naukari)

Kantara - no sir, not too great. It is less short to be called Good.
Kantara was such a hype among moviewatchers as the movie scored more than 9 in IMDB..
It has a very soulful opening, of a man of power and wealth in search of peace.
But as that portion sets the opening of the movie, what follows after that is slow, snailpace!
The movie's plot may appear uninteresting because of the slow pacing screenplay in the first half. But its hype gave me hopes that the good part will come.
The Hero is not your typical action hero, aged look, average height but decent performance and reflected positivity through smiles, innocence but his entry
The Hero's first scene Failed to establish his solid character.
For instance at the beginning of Pushpa, we understand that Pushpa knows that 'Authority is bendable with money, and he never bends to Authority for money'. Thus establishing himself to be a man apart - A Hero.
But here, it is not so, and still I threw out that for what is next possibly.
The Love portion not convincing. The Heroine did not show any feelings towards him but she quickly goes even to kiss him after he helps her get the job placement at their village itself.
Some jokes went well with the audience.
The plot Gives importance to the heroes actions but the heroes actions are not important. So you need to be really patient.
If you wait , there is a smal mystery beginning in the second half, a few Archaic way of screams and shocks and way too many songs.
The portayal of his hero's brief jail life looks like a bunch of friends went on a vacation.
The Climax is touching but the whole plot to set up this end, should not have taken such a time.
It should have been a short film, or a series but the plot has nothing for a feature film size.
But if you are that guys who say 'we should appreciate our Tamil films', then I salute your willingness to accept half cooked up stew.

Rishabh Shetty starrer and director 'Kantara' became a blockbuster not only in Kannada but also in Telugu. Telugu audience is loving this movie which shows Varaha in a great way and what happens when you play with the wild. Produced by Vijay Kirangadur under Hombale Films banner, Allu Aravind released this movie in Telugu. A week has passed since this movie came to us. Business value of Telugu version is Rs. 2 crore trade categories, so far in seven days the film has collected Rs. 11.37 crore share was reported. That means Rs. It is said that the distributor has made a profit of more than 9 crores. Based on this, it is understood what level of blockbuster it is.

Kantara movie review: Rishabh Shetty's retelling of folk songs is highly imaginative and immersive
Kantara movie review: Rishabh Shetty’s retelling of folk songs is highly imaginative and immersive
A sure sign of a well-written movie is when you can’t tell within the first 10 minutes who the villain is. The insidious antagonist creates an illusion of disbelief in the story by not giving in to himself. Until we are immersed in the film and trying to sort out the knots, we can’t tell who the bad guy is or what their motives are. That pivotal point usually comes very close to the climax. It is…

Homeward Bound
Private Diary and Journal of a Light Horseman Sgt William Peterson
 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment
From previous references in the journal it will be observed that I have or had been having a deal of sickness. I tried to fight against it but the climax came on the 20th January when I was sent away from the Regiment what my complaint was at first I was at a loss to know but it transpired that I was suffering from Neurasthenia and Debility. The neurasthenia predominating I was sent back to the 3rd Field Ambulance one of our advanced hospitals and after being examined by the Medical Officer (Major Cave) I was sent back along the line to the 24th Australian Stationary Hospital at Mahamadya . After staying there 2 days I was sent to the 24th Casualty Clearing Station at Kantara and after 2 doctors there I was sent to the 14th Australian General Hospital at Abbassia near Cairo where I have been ever since. Homeward bound for the land of the Southern Cross! I don’t seem to realize it even yet. I shall wake up yet and find myself sleeping under a bush on the Sinai Peninsular on in some dug-out on Gallipoli or I shall wake up after one of those 10 minute spells at each hour on one of these never-to-be-forgotten soul-killing night marches again. [William Peterson, a telephone lineman of Warwick, Queensland had previously served with the Australians in the South African War in 1896, and the British 2nd Dragoon Guards 1900-1908. He enlisted with the A.I.F. on 23 Aug 1914 aged 33 and embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board A15 Star Of England, 24 Sept. 1914. He served with the 2nd Light Horse Brigade in Egypt and Gallipoli, 1915, and in the Romani Campaign in the Sinai Peninsular, 1916-1917. He was invalided back to Australia, arriving in Brisbane 3 May 1917.]
