Australia declassified: 5 great alternative places
It is no secret that Australia is home to heaps of well-known landmarks, both natural and man-made. The continent has been on the charm offensive with its World Heritage Sites, and tempting the globe with its laid-back lifestyle and three-hour-long brunches. But famous attractions and delicious grub aren’t the only reason why so many visitors go back to the land Down Under – here are some hidden gems for new and returning visitors seeking unforgettable adventures.
Alternative dining experience – Eyre Peninsula’s seafood trail, Port Augusta, SA
Tumblr media
Forget holes-in-the-wall, private kitchens or fine dining and go on a seafood tasting safari that lets you sample the best of what South Australia has to offer. Starting from Port Augusta, the journey takes you through many gourmet layovers along the coast. Get your hands wet and catch your lunch of tender blue crabs, feast on freshly harvested oysters on a farm tour at Coffin Bay, and dine your heart out at the many restaurants in the area. Travellers looking for an extended safari should check out the charming bed and breakfasts along the trail.
Alternative reef – Ningaloo Reef, Exmouth, WA
Tumblr media
Image Source: Luxury Lodges of Australia
Ningaloo Reef is often overshadowed by its massive cousin, the Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s most talked about living organism. Hop on a short flight from Perth to Exmouth and hit the resorts located right at the fringe of this untouched 260km-long structure. Only metres away from the shore, expect to walk over to the reef without any snorkelling gear! Capture it all on Instagram (make sure your phone is waterproof) as you dive with whale sharks congregating in their natural habitat or catch the migrating humpback whales that skirt the beautiful coastline.
Alternative art museum – The White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney, NSW
Tumblr media
Image Source: White Rabbit Gallery Facebook
Looking for more fun and quirk in your art? Look beyond the usual suspects like the Museum of Contemporary Art or MONA and head to the White Rabbit Gallery, a private art museum featuring only 21st-century Chinese contemporary art by collector Judith Neilson. Be intrigued by over 2000 works contained in a whimsical arena or take a breather from sensory overload and have a cup of tea at the museum’s teahouse. Best part of all? Admission is free!
Alternative national park – Kakadu National Park, NT
Tumblr media
Australia’s largest nature reserve, the Kakadu National Park offers breathtaking hiking trails and vistas that easily rival those of the Grampians or Blue Mountains. Hire a four-wheel drive to explore isolated and inaccessible sanctuaries like the Gunlom Falls and the Ikoymarrwa Rock Pool, or jump on a cruise tour of the Yellow Water Wetlands that changes with the six seasons, constantly transforming the landscape. Camping tip: Stay at the bespoke Flash Camp in Cooinda during the dry season instead of roughing it out in a tent to get closer to nature!
Alternative drive – The East Coast, Tasmania
Tumblr media
Image Source: Friendly Beaches Lodge/Great Walks of Australia
Equally as awe-inspiring as the Great Ocean Road, the tranquil Tasmanian East Coast is a treasure trove of stunning bays, wildlife, pristine beaches and lookout points that dot the island’s east coast. Break your journey along this 300km stretch from Hobart to St Helens and wander around pitstops like the picturesque Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires or stop for a scrumptious treat at the Darlington Vineyard.

10 reasons Adelaide will win your heart
In 2014, Adelaide featured in Lonely Planet's list of 'Top 10 cities in the world'. In 2015, Australian researchers found that Adelaide was 'the beach-going capital of Australia'. In the same year, she also took fifth place on the list of 'The World's most live-able cities' put together by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Despite her many accolades, surprisingly, Adelaide hasn't given up her small-town vibe, and offers you the best of both worlds – all the offerings of a sophisticated city with a laid-back attitude. Here's how to make the most of your trip to this remarkable city.
Tumblr media
1. Australia's first pedestrian-ised mall: In the 70's, Rundle Street was packed with shoppers and their vehicles, leading to the government shutting down part of the street and turning it into a pedestrian-only shopping area. Today the mall measures a whopping 520 metres, housing International fashion, alongside their Australian counterparts. En route you'll come across random pieces of art such as, 'The Spheres', by Bert Flugelman, which consists of two stainless steel spheres balanced one on top of the other, and aptly nicknamed, 'the mall's balls'. Or admire the quirky life-size bronze pigs standing around a bin. Shopping was never this much fun.
Tumblr media
2. People make places: While the indigenous people have always inhabited the State, it was only in the 19th century that the British decided to start a free settlement in South Australia. And herein lies the story of various people and countless cultures that made South Australia their home. There are thrilling tales and emotional ones; odes to resilience and odes to change are beautifully narrated at the Migration Museum which traces the social history of the State.
Tumblr media
3. Eat your way through Adelaide: It all began in 1869, when farmers brought their produce and decided to start shop. In little over three hours, they were out of stock! Today the Adelaide Central Market consists of several stalls and you can find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to little cafes selling fragrant tea and home-made bread; and from restaurants serving piping hot paella to meats on a stick for those in a rush. There are also several award-winning restaurants in the city. Head to Peel Street to find everything from burger joints to cafes, wine bars, and fancy establishments.
Tumblr media
4. Bowled over: Cricket and football fans will want to sign up for the tour of the Adelaide Oval which takes you behind the scenes at what is known as the most picturesque stadium. The tour will have you walking onto the field from the players’ gate to the pre-recorded beats of crowds cheering. The oval also has museum which is a shrine to legendary batsman, Sir Don Bradman. There's no better way to feel like a sports star.
Tumblr media
5. Drink up: Adelaide likes her food, but loves her wine. And she tops your glass with only the best. A speedy one-hour drive away, Barossa Valley is one of the oldest and finest wine-growing regions in Australia. You can check into a hotel that overlooks the sprawling vineyards, sign up for a tour of a winery, take up a tasting class or a pairing workshop. If you're looking for adventure, try a hot air balloon ride over the picturesque region. Or just sit back and relax with a glass of Shiraz which is the signature variety of the region.
Tumblr media
6. Say a little prayer: Adelaide is also known as, 'the city of churches'. Every few kilometers you can spot a spire. But the churches are more than a religious symbol; they have a place in history. Adelaide, being a free colony, came with freedom of religion. The Holy Trinity Anglican Church is the oldest church in Adelaide, housed in one of the oldest buildings in the city, and despite having undergone several renovations over the years, it still bears an original stained glass window, as also plaques and memorial tablets, which hark back to the early settlers.
Tumblr media
7. Go Green: Enter the botanic gardens and it feels like you've walked into an enchanted forest made up of lush greens swatches of multihued flora interspersed with endangered species. What's more, this green miracle sits right on the fringes of the bustling city. Spread over 51 hectares, you can walk the pathways and lose yourself. In the bargain, you'll chance upon myriad flowers and chirping birds. Don't worry if you don't know your sweet peas from your snap dragons, just find a quiet corner (and there are plenty of those) to take in nature's gorgeous gifts.
Tumblr media
8. Where the festivities never end: Adelaide bears many tags, including the 'festival city'. 56 per cent of all festival tickets in the continent-nation are sold in South Australia. It’s little wonder then that Australia's first multi-purpose arts centre came up here. In fact, the Adelaide Arts Centre is older than the Sydney Opera House. Today the venue hosts more than 980,000 people annually. Visit any time of year and you're in for a treat: From cabaret festivals to ballet performances to Broadway shows - just take your pick.
Tumblr media
9. Is it a beach? Is it a park? It's both!: The Beachouse is an amusement park which comes sans any entry fee - you pay per ride - and promises loads of fun for the entire family. There are attractions for 3-year-olds and rides that help adults connect with their inner child. From water slides to a magic mountain; from a Ferris wheel to your favourite fairy tale characters, you can find it all at this sea-side theme park. A day at the beach takes a whole new twist within these grounds.
Tumblr media
10. Get lucky: Try your luck at the Adelaide casino, a gaming paradise where you can play the slot machine, baccarat, blackjack and more. Or take a back seat and watch as people bet their life's savings on one turn of pitch and toss. Winners can blow up their easy money without venturing too far. Because this casino spans three floors and comes with an array of swanky restaurants and hedonistic bars. Now all you need to do is work on your poker face!

5 famous filming locations in Australia you’ll have to visit
With a stunning number of gorgeous cityscapes and unique natural environments, it’s no surprise why more movies, TV series and MTVs are being filmed in Australia. If you’ve ever sat behind a movie, TV or computer screen and wondered where in the world that scene was filmed, we’ve narrowed some of the more beautiful destinations for you. After going through the list, you don’t even need to be a film maker or movie buff to want to visit these locations!
‘Mad Max III’ — Coober Pedy, South Australia
Tumblr media
Image: South Australian Tourism Commission. Photographer: Adam Bruzzone
The quirky mining town of Coober Pedy is one of the most unique places in Australia, where everything from hotels and shops, to churches and bars are located underground. Visit this subterranean community where locals live and play beneath the earth, or head above ground to play golf. For a touch of cinematic nostalgia, pop by Moon Plain, Dog Fence or the Breakaways where most of the movie's filming took place.
‘Coldplay: A Sky Full of Stars’ — King Street, Sydney
The popular shopping and dining precinct of King Street is home to an array of edgy fashion boutiques, eccentric homewares and various cheap eats, making this vibrant suburb an obvious choice to film the British rock band’s music video, 'A Sky Full of Stars’.
youtube
While filming their music video, frontman Chris Martin and the members of Coldplay dawned one-man-band suits and took to the streets of Newtown. The music video starts out as a low-key performance and ends in a full blown celebration outside the iconic Hub Theatre, an adult porn cinema turned music venue.
‘Babe’ — Robertson, Southern Highlands
Tumblr media
Image: Visit NSW
Remember the talking pig from the movie Babe? It’s hard to forget the adorable piglet and his big adventures, but what’s even harder to forget would be the gorgeous green hues and rural landscapes of Robertson in the Southern Highlands — the famous town where the movie was first filmed.
Fertile soil has provided the region with an abundance of natural beauty, making it a spectacular route for road trip via the scenic highlands less than a two-hour drive from Sydney.
‘Running Man (Episode 189)’ — Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne
Tumblr media
Image: Visit Victoria. Photographer: Robert Blackburn
Fans of the hit South Korean variety show, Running Man, were thrilled to see the likes of Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Gary, Haha, Song Ji-hyo, Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo, with their antics taking them on an incredible urban race through the city of Melbourne.
Guest starring heartthrobs Rain and Kim Woo-bin, Melbourne-ers got to catch the wacky cast up to their usual shenanigans at the Royal Exhibition Building, hunting for clues, solving puzzles and making hilarious attempts to ‘eliminate’ their opponents via ‘name tag removal’. Savage!
‘Crocodile Dundee’ – Kakadu National Park, Darwin
Tumblr media
Image: Tourism Australia. Photographer: Adam Taylor
Years after the film catapulted Kakadu to international fame, the incredible terrain hasn’t lose any of its appeal, captivating visitors with its stunning sandstone escarpments, cascading waterfalls and archaeological reserves.
The film showcased some of the Darwin's most well-known sites, including the Aboriginal rock gallery Ubirr, Waterfall Creek, as well as the outback’s most ferocious natives — the salt water crocodile!

The Butler at Potts Point is a sleek diner in a trendy neighbourhood and it comes complete with great food and glorious skyline set against the sunset.
Don’t miss the museums and heritage sites along the historical district of Macquarie Street, or head to any of the many nightlife hotspots and seaside bars of the famous Darling Harbour.

Start your day early by taking in views of the beautiful harbour front with the city’s most iconic architectural wonders as the city wakes up. Find out what goes on 'behind the scenes' on a backstage tour of the Sydney Opera House, before grabbing lunch with a view at Bennelong, a restaurant within one of the Opera House sails.
After a fantastic lunch, work it off by doing a fully-guided climb up to the top of the Harbour Bridge. You will be briefed thoroughly by the guides, entertained with stories about the Bridge’s history and finally treated to the panoramic views of the cityscape. You can even do the climb in the evening if you so desire!

Learn to surf at the famous Bondi Beach (or explore the quieter beaches around the area); swim in Bronte's family-friendly rock pool; enjoy fresh produce and gourmet treats at Bondi Farmers Markets on Saturdays or pick up handmade trinkets on Sundays; enjoy a relaxing dip in Coogee’s calm shimmering waters or embark on the various scenic beach walks for incredible views of the coastline, and round all of that up by having a hearty Italian dinner as you appreciate the sunset at Bondi Iceberg Dining Room and Bar.
Alternatively, spend a day at the quainter Manly Beach, a mere 30-minute ferry ride away from Sydney. Considered Sydneysider’s well-kept secret, Manly Beach offers a gateway into the famous Fairy Bower Pool, snorkelling spots and a generally laid-back atmosphere.

On the fourth day, it’s time to venture past the fringes of Sydney’s urban atmosphere to experience spectacular scenery and cool mountain air. Embark on a bush-walking expedition in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, passing through breathtaking greenery, stunning rock formations and quaint mountain villages.

It’s the last day of the trip, which means that you get a free pass to total indulgence with some of Australia’s finest wines and food. Jump straight into a wine-making and tasting session at the burgeoning city wineries sprouting around Sydney, like Urban Winery, where you can learn about wines, stomp on grapes, blend your own tipple or even have a special Harvest lunch on Sundays, without leaving the city. With 16,000 works packed inside this eclectic building, you’ll definitely spend a lot of time at the Gallery of Modern Art (free).
Fridays at Brisbane’s Powerhouse are heaps of fun. Lunch in the vicinity will set you back around AUD$10-20 max, but it will be so worth it. The highlight is dubbed Knockoff Fridays, where you’ll find free (good) comedy with views over the river. Booze sold separately.
Melbourne
Tumblr media
Brighton Bathing Boxes, Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria. Image: Visit Melbourne
Unless you’re heading outside of the Free Tram Zone (which will be clearly identified by signs at tram stops), travelling around Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands is free!
Be an urban explorer by wandering around Melbourne’s maze of laneways to reveal quirky storefronts with anything from food, fashion to arts!
Take beautiful selfies at Brighton Beach, famous for its quaint colourful bathing boxes on the beach set against Melbourne’s skyline.
