June 22 - Safe
Melanie really hated feeling vulnerable. She was a brown belt in Krav Maga for crying out loud - she could kick anyone’s ass. Or rather, she used to be able to. If necessary, she probably could still do some damage, but she was pregnant and that probably wasn’t the best idea for her or the baby. She would put herself in danger without question, but her son? She couldn’t bring herself to even entertain the idea, no matter how much she wanted to attempt to murder her ex with her bare hands.
Melanie had this tendency to attract a particular type of guy and, regardless of how toxic they were, she’d stay with them longer than she probably should because she didn’t think she deserved better. It was just her luck that Ellis wasn’t anything like any of her exes. His pictures might’ve screamed douche, but he was the furthest thing from that. She trusted her and their baby’s life with him and that was honesty the highest honor in her eyes.
“Sup, Mel?” Ellis answered after two rings and she could hear the video games in the  background.  He was probably with his brother and best friend; she almost felt bad for interrupting.
“Do you think I could come over…spend the night, maybe?” She asked, trying to keep her tone conversational. She peered out the window, confirming that Sean was still outside.
There was a brief pause. “Of course you can…is everything okay? Do you need me to come over?”
It was probably her pregnancy hormones, but Melanie felt her eyes well up with tears. “You wouldn’t mind coming?” She asked, probably a little too quickly. “It’s just…Sean is sitting outside my apartment like some creep and even though he’s done this before, I really don’t feel safe.”
Mel didn’t know what she was supposed to consider Ellis.  Baby daddy, while completely accurate, felt a little too casual, whereas she wasn’t sure she could call him her boyfriend considering they hadn’t DTR’d.  They were comfortable enough around each other, though, but more importantly, Mel felt safe with him.  He probably didn’t even realize just how much that meant to her.
“I really don’t like that he can just sit there and the police won’t do shit.” Ellis grumbled. He pulled the phone away from his ear and said some things to whoever he was with.
“The restraining order is still being processed.” Melanie frowned. “And they say they can’t do anything until it has.”
“Fucking nonsense.” Ellis scoffed. “I’m gonna go grab my keys and I’ll be at your place in 20, maybe 30 depending on traffic.”
“Oh, I thought I would just come to you.”  She said, trying not to be such a burden. It was still daytime, she highly doubted Sean would do something in public.
“Nah, nah.” She could tell he was shaking his head. “I’ll see you soon.”
At some point between her phone call with Ellis to him arriving, Sean had either changed locations or drove away. Mel didn’t care. She was so paranoid while waiting for him to get there that she stopped checking on her ex, not wanting to see him leaving his car. She was just glad that Ellis hadn’t run into him, or had the chance to do something reckless honestly.
As promised, he was at her door approximately 24 minutes later, and Mel was so relieved to see him she threw her arms around him once he opened the door. “Thank you for coming.” She kissed his cheek.
Ellis smiled down at her. “Happy to be here.” He gave her apartment a once around, saw her packed bag, then offered his arm. “Shall we?”
Mel grinned up at him, hooking her arm with his gladly. “Any chance we can grab Taco Bell on our way back to your place?” She asked once they were in his car.  She was feeling pretty good considering she didn’t see Sean anymore.
“I think we can make that happen.” Ellis chuckled, nodding. “Just take my phone and ask Beck if he wants anything, alright?”
