When movie comes out on vod maybe i'd talk about it more but one detail i really love about "Chłopi/The Peasants" was the way dance sequences were directed. It really did felt how in both wedding and Antek dance Jagna was treated like an object, but in different ways. When Maciej is treating her more as a treasure, Antek views her as a sexual desire (a least i read it as that).

I wish i knew how to make gifs, but notice how in Jesień-Tańcuj (which is an absolute banger) there really isn't that much of erotic passion in a way that old Boryna interracts with Jagna. He does seem to be attracted to her, but he keeps a certain level of stoicism. Any time we see them kiss or do other intimate stuff it feels more like: a man and his prize. But getting back on track. The choreography seems to focus more on his observation. He circles her, spins her around a lot, like he's looking at riches from every angle. Jagna is tossed from man to man, like you could do with some gold or gems, showing rest of the village what beauty he'd got.

On the other hand we have Antek. First of all, dance definitely feels more personal, it's just two of them. There's also that passion that is far more stronger than in a previous one. The thing is though, it all come down to touch. Antek touches her, going through her figure like she's a statue. He takes of her ribbon of her braid, as the sharp red light reflect on their faces. There's definitely an emotion here, and with Jagna's leitmotiv playing in the background (also such a beautiful piece) it does seem like there is honesty in the way she views this situation, like she feels alive, like a person. But that sharp red is Antek's lust. It also almost feels like a warning call, to stop while they are ahead, as if something terrible is going to happen next...

Yes i am currently hiperfixating on Chłopi of all things, what about it.

This upcoming film by director Dorota Kobiela is based on the Nobel Prize winning novel Chłopi (The Peasants) by Władysław Reymont. I haven't read the book but I'm very interested in this story just from the trailer alone. And very impressed with that painted animation technique. It looks like an insane amount of work!

Byłam dzisiaj na "Chłopach" i powiem że to jest najlepszy film tego roku. Jeśli nie dostaną Oscara to chyba spalę Akademię do cna. Ogółem mówiąc, fantastyczny i polecam wszystkim, nawet tym którzy nie lubią lektur, albo w szczególności im, może akurat zapamiętacie coś z tego przed maturą.

Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Władyslaw Reymont, the story follows a young woman in the late 19th century who is forced to marry a wealthy farmer, despite her love for his son. The townspeople come to despise her, but she fights on. Set in the Polish countryside on the cusp of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the story’s dramatic turns tie into the changing seasons, hard labor in the fields, and the traditional local holidays. The look is inspired “by popular realist and pre-impressionist paintings from the 19th Century, with an emphasis on the Young Poland Movement and the works of such artists as Józef Chełmoński, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, and Leon Wyczółkowski.” It won’t be done until 2022, considering every frame (over ~65,000) has to be painted by hand.

First-look images and trailer for Oscar-nominated Loving Vincent director Dorota Kobiela’s The Peasants have been presented. The film is due for release in 2022.

Based on the novel Chłopi by Nobel Prize-winning Polish author Władysław Reymont, the movie uses painted animation inspired by the works of the “Young Poland” art movement (1890-1918) to immerse audiences in the everyday dramas of a rural Polish village at the dawn of the 20th century. The book was originally published in four parts, each representing a “season” in the lives of its peasant characters, between 1904 and 1909. The movie’s story will center on the tragic character of Jagna, a 19-year-old woman.

Dorota Kobiela seems to be very into modernism/młoda polska era, i BET that next one she plans is Wesele adaptation, like she even has art of Wyspiański as a reference, it all feels like a foreshadowing.
