Julian Francis Abele (April 30, 1881 – April 23, 1950) was a prominent African-American architect and chief designer in the offices of Horace Trumbauer. He contributed to the design of more than 400 buildings, including the Widener Memorial Library at Harvard University, Philadelphia's Central Library, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He was the primary designer of the west campus of Duke University. His contributions to the Trumbauer firm were great, but the only building for which he claimed authorship during Trumbauer's lifetime was Duke University Chapel. He co-headed the architectural firm and designed additional buildings at Duke, including Allen Administrative Building and Cameron Indoor Stadium. He was related to Absalom Jones, who established the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, the first black church in Philadelphia. His son, Julian Francis Abele, Jr. was an architectural engineer. He worked in many media: watercolor, lithography, etching and pencil, wood, iron, gold, and silver. He designed and constructed all of his furniture, even doing the petit point himself. While he knew many historic styles, he seemed to love Louis XIV French most of all. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc-ii1nLewOgsIjOzeUnHiA6W3IT5GGqZqpfu00/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Evan Weaver Named Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Year
Bynum, Curhan, Davis, Deng, Goode, Hawkins And Johnson Also Honored
SAN FRANCISCO – Cal senior inside linebacker Evan Weaver was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches the Pac-12 Conference announced Tuesday. Weaver becomes the eighth Cal player to earn a Player of the Year or Co-Player of the Year honor from the conference and the fifth on the defensive side of the ball joining Chuck Muncie (1975), Ron Rivera (1983, Co-Defensive), Mike Pawlawski (1991, Co-Offensive), Deltha O'Neal (1999, Defensive), Daymeion Hughes (2006, Defensive), Marshawn Lynch (2006, Offensive) and Mychal Kendricks (2011, Defensive). "This award means a lot to me," Weaver said. "It's really special when the coaches of the teams you play against recognize what you are doing on the football field." "Evan loves football as much or more than anyone I've ever coached," Cal head coach Justin Wilcox said. "We are so proud of him for earning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and joining an elite group of players in our program's history. He has had a truly remarkable season and it is satisfying that the coaches in our conference have recognized that." Weaver was Cal's lone first-team selection while Camryn Bynum (Jr., CB) and Ashtyn Davis (Sr., S) were second-team picks. Jake Curhan (Jr., OL), Kuony Deng (Jr., ILB), Cameron Goode (Jr., OLB), Jaylinn Hawkins (Sr., S) and Zeandae Johnson (Sr., DE/DT) picked up honorable mention selections. Weaver earned his second All-Pac-12 honors after being a second-team selection in 2018. Bynum and Davis were both honorable mention picks last season, while Curhan, Deng, Goode, Hawkins and Johnson were honored for the first time in their careers.
Below are notes from the 2019 season on Cal's All-Pac-12 honorees with extended bios that also include career information available by clicking on each of their names.

10 Hidden Details Everyone Missed In Cowboy Bebop | ScreenRant
There are few anime as widely praised as Shinichiro Watanabe's Cowboy Bebop. Other series are certainly better known, but they lack universal acclaim. The show was actually well-received during its original release. Having only one season is what likely kept the series from being as popular as Dragon Ball Z, though.
This space neo-noir is celebrated for its stellar writing and striking characters. The anime is rife with talent and innovation. And now with Netflix's live-action adaptation on the horizon, this is a great time to revisit the original series. So, here are some hidden details fans might have missed.
RELATED: Why Anime Is Definitely Not Just For Kids
10 Forefather of bebop
Tumblr media
Jet shares a dream he had with Spike in Session #3. In it, a man named Charlie Parker told Jet, "Only hands can wash hands." Charlie Parker — whose nicknames included "Yardbird" or simply "Bird" — was in fact a real person. Parker was an American jazz composer and saxophonist who is considered influential in bebop's creation. He shirked tradition and developed a groundbreaking style characterized by intricate chord progressions, diverse key changes, and improvisation.
In spite of its name, Cowboy Bebop's soundtracks aren't bebop sounding at all. The use of "bebop" in the title actually refers to the anime's storytelling style.
9 Gren's no Brad Pitt, but...
Tumblr media
Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener (or just Gren) is an unforgettable one-time character in Cowboy Bebop. Gren served in the Titan War with Spike's nemesis Vicious. After being tried as a spy, however, Gren was sentenced to prison. An overwhelming animosity towards Vicious — who may have testified against Gren — urged the prison to sedate him. The medication, though, had a distinct, physical side effect on Gren that Faye couldn't help but notice in Session 12.
The series' character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto originally modeled Gren after Brad Pitt, but he changed his mind later for spoiler-y reasons.
8 Faye Valentine's age
Tumblr media
Session #15 is an important episode for Faye Valentine. First, an easter egg — on Faye's cryo-container is the serial number NCC-1701-B. Star Trek fans will recognize this as the same serial number for the USS Enterprise. This ship was first seen in the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.
This episode most importantly also reveals Faye's age. Her cryo-container was last opened on November 23, 2019, which presumably is when Faye entered it. The events of Cowboy Bebop happen in 2071, and Faye was born in 1994. So in order of time, Faye would be 77-years old.

7 Lupin III's car
Tumblr media
In Session #15, William Haggis Matsumoto and Faye pass a familiar Fiat 500 on the road. This is no doubt a reference to Arsène Lupin III's iconic yellow car. Lupin III is a classic manga and anime series created and illustrated by Monkey Punch. The original Fiat 500 car was manufactured and sold between 1957 and 1975. The compact city vehicle was less than 10 feet long; one model was powered by a 479 cc two-cylinder engine. From the characterizations to the themes, the Lupin III franchise is believed to be a major source of inspiration for Cowboy Bebop.
6 Classic video game consoles
Tumblr media
Faye goes undercover in a cult called SCRATCH so she can collect a bounty on the leader. This cult believes eternal life can be achieved by uploading our digitized souls to the Internet. In a commercial for SCRATCH, people throw away their classic video game consoles in favor of a new system called Brain Dream. The consoles in the commercial are the Sega Genesis (or Sega Mega Drive), the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System or Famicom), the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Super Famicom), and the first Sony PlayStation (or PS1). The controllers' buttons and d-pads are switched around, though.
5 Aliens references
Tumblr media
Spike and his crew are under attack by an alien lifeform in Session #11. In the episode, a blob-like alien with a nasty bite targets everyone aboard the Bebop. This story is similar to James Cameron's 1979 film Alien where the titular monster disposes of the USCSS Nostromo crew one by one. Scenes in the episode also reference the sequel Aliens. For instance, Spike arms himself with a gun and a flamethrower like Ridley did. In addition, he uses a handheld motion tracker. Lastly, the blob creature is defeated the same way as the Xenomorph: it's expelled through an airlock.

4 Coffee and Shaft

When the Bebop crashes on Jupiter's moon Io in Session #17, Ed and Ein meet a bounty hunter named Coffee. The episode is an homage to "blaxploitation" crime movies of the 1970s. Coffee herself is a reference to the namesake of the 1973 movie Coffy. In the film, Pam Grier plays a disgruntled nurse who wages a war on drugs. She avenges her addict sister by killing anyone who sells or pushes drugs. Coffee is styled like Grier's character. The same episode has a character named Shaft, who is indeed modeled after the eponymous character in the 1971 film Shaft.

In Session #19, "Wild Horses", Jet and Faye pursue a trio of techno pirates. This band of terrorists — whose M.O. is using computer viruses to attack ships — is comprised of three men named George, Herman, and Ruth. The full name of famous baseball player Babe Ruth is George Herman Ruth, Jr. His career in Major League Baseball lasted a whopping twenty-two seasons. Miles — a minor character in the episode who's modeled after Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation — is a big Blue Sox fan. This is a reference to one of Ruth's teams, the Boston Red Sox.

In Session #18, Jet and Spike receive a Beta tape in the mail. In case you're unfamiliar with what Betamax even is, it's an older video cassette format. Anyway, in the episode "Speak Like a Child", Jet and Spike visit a shop in hopes of finding a Betamax player. The shopkeeper is watching what looks and sounds like a taped copy of Beverly Hills, 90210. The depicted characters are fraternal twins from Minnesota, and "Jason Prestory" and "Shanan D'Har-"-something are the show's executive producers. The names are clearly a reference to Beverly Hills 90210 stars Jason Priestly and Shannen Doherty.

Martial artist and actor Bruce Lee inspired many characters in film and television. In Cowboy Bebop, Bruce Lee's influence can be seen in Spike Spiegel and his fighting style. Spike practices jeet kune do, a special technique developed by Bruce Lee. When he engages in physical combat with opponents, Spike uses jeet kune do with varied results. The style — whose Cantonese name translates to "The Way of the Intercepting Fist" — combines aspects of boxing, fencing, and obviously kung fu. Spike's fight with villain Abdul Hakim is Session #2 references Lee's match with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the film Game of Death.

MLB Bullets and the kids are alright
You probably heard that Athletics first-round pick Kyler Murray went to the Cardinals (of the other sport) with the first pick in the NFL draft. That almost certainly ends his baseball career and it’s probably the last time we’ll mention him in these pages, unless he does something like throw out a cool first pitch some day.
C’mon, Molly, that’s not fair. There’s the day of the NBA Draft as well.
You know this already, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is going to play for the Blue Jays today.
Gregor Chisholm has what you need to know about baseball’s likely next superstar.
Jon Tayler has what to expect from Guerrero Jr.
Emma Baccellieri looks at what the projection systems say Guerrero will do this year.
R.J. Anderson notes that Guerrero Jr. looks (and has put up numbers) a lot like his dad. One difference was that when Vlad Sr. was 20, he was still in low-A. (But then, Vlad went from low-A at 20 to a cup of coffee in the majors at 21 and up for good at 22.) Another difference is that Vlad the younger doesn’t swing at as many bad pitches.
Kaitlyn McGrath speaks with Guerrero Jr.’s minor league teammates about him and their scouting report is one word: “wow.” (The Athletic sub. req.)
These photos of the two Vlads when the elder was with the Expos are making everyone go “awwwww.”
He’s not going to get as much fanfare as Vlad Jr., but the Nationals are also calling up shortstop Carter Kieboom. I’m glad I got to see him play once before he got the call.
Last year’s big shiny new thing was Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and he didn’t disappoint, either last year or this year. Jeff Passan believes that it’s just a matter of time before Acuña is the best player in baseball. Of course, Mike Trout has to retire first.
Gabe Lacques has a profile of emerging star shortstop Tim Anderson of the White Sox. Anderson has been in the news lately, but Lacques points out that he’s had to overcome some tragedy to get to where he is today.
David Schoenfield thinks that the Padres have found an ace in rookie pitcher Chris Paddack.
Schoenfield also believes that Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso is baseball’s next big thing, both metaphorically and literally.
Mets reliever Jacob Rhame was suspended for two games for throwing at the head of Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins in Tuesday’s game.
Hoskins got his revenge on Wednesday when Hoskins homered off Rhame and then took 34 seconds to round the bases.
Who’s the hottest hitter in baseball? I’m betting you didn’t guess Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke and his 1.845 OPS.
Who leads the Angels in home runs? Trout? Albert Pujols? Kole Calhoun? Nope, it’s Tommy La Stella, who has seven already. He hit 10 home runs total in his previous five years with the Cubs and Braves.
While we’re on the Angels, Trout and Andrelton Simmons teamed up to turn one amazing double play. Trout made an incredible catch in center field and Simmons then pulled a semi-hidden-ball trick.
I’ve written a lot about the Yankees injury issues this season and the Bronx Bombers suffered another blow as outfielder Giancarlo Stanton suffered a setback in his recovery efforts.
The Yankees added outfielder Clint Frazier to their injured list.
Dan Szymborski writes that the Yankees injury issues are a major problem, but don’t write off their 2019 season just yet, thanks mainly to the team’s depth.
The Yankees added to that depth by trading for outfielder Cameron Maybin. The Indians got someone named “cash considerations” back in the deal.
Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia failed to get his 3,000th strikeout in his last start against the Angels, but he’s only three away and should get it soon. Tim Brown has a look back at Sabathia’s remarkable, hall-of-fame career which Brown calls “not perfect but close enough.”
The Brewers have signed free agent pitcher Gio Gonzalez to a one-year, $2 million deal.
Ben Clemens looks at the remarkable skill of Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong to control the strike zone.
Clemens also examines how Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer has found success after he changed his pitch selection mix this season. Of course, it wasn’t like he was bad last season. But now he throws almost exclusively fastballs when behind in the count.
R.J. Anderson notes that the Diamondbacks haven’t missed Paul Goldschmidt much this season because of the remarkable start by first baseman Christian Walker.
Reds broadcaster Chris Welsh has apologized to Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies after saying on the air that a poor kid from Curaçao like Albies wouldn’t know the difference between $35 and $85 million.
Meanwhile down with the minor league Salem Red Sox, Melanie Newman and Suzie Cool became the first all-woman broadcast team in baseball. (The Athletic sub. req.) Brittany Ghiroli writes about how the two women came together and the hard work that they have in front of them.
Giants broadcaster Jon Miller looks back at his Hall-of-Fame career and how much baseball has changed since he started in 1974.
MLB announced that they are going to have a “Stranger Things” promotion this summer. June 24 will be “Stranger Things” Day at Wrigley. That show is about the only thing I can get my daughter to watch with me, so I have a soft spot for it at the moment. She’s a huge Millie Bobby Brown fan.
Stephanie Apstein has the story about how the Orioles team have mostly adopted a new form of transportation to get them to and from the stadium: motorized scooters. Or as outfielder Trey Mancini said “[The Orioles] may be the lamest biker gang in the world.”
A 59-year-old grandmother and Orioles fan got tired of the way everyone was booing Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, so she got a tattoo to honor Davis. It’s her only tattoo.
Alfonso Tusa looks back at the history of the “kangaroo court” in baseball and in particular, the legendary one that Frank Robinson ran with the Orioles of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.
“Tommy John surgery” has officially been added to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary.
Brewers pitcher Jeremy Jeffress is going to bring his food truck to Miller Park next week. I am 100% in favor of food trucks at ballparks. Jeffess’ one serves fried seafood.
He eventually decided against it. but Reds outfielder Jesse Winker considered helping himself to some nachos from a fan in the stands after going for a foul ball.
And finally, this would be the ultimate breaking of the “unwritten rules” if it had happened in MLB. Instead, we got this cool video of Kenji Akasha of the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks hitting a walkoff home run and then doing an amazing backflip as he crossed home plate.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND July 19, 2019 – DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME, THE LION KING
Tumblr media
Before we get to the big studio release… which I haven’t seen… I’m gonna focus on a new doc opening in New York and L.A. on Friday, DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME (Sony Pictures Classics). Directed by A.J. Eaton and produced by Cameron Crowe, this movie surprised me first and foremost because I never really had much interest in Crosby Stills and Nash, so I wasn’t sure if I’d really care much to hear Crosby’s story. (Granted, one of my favorite bands, Yes, was hugely influenced by CSN.)
Much of the film is made up of interviews with Crosby conducted by Crowe, who first interviewed Crosby when he was a young journalist in the ‘70s. There are some real revelations in the film – similar to the recent Marianne and Leonard– including Crosby admitting that he got a number of girlfriends hooked on drugs. He also lost a girlfriend in a car accident that deeply affected him, although it’s also interesting to hear from some of his bandmates like Graham Nash, who claim that Crosby is not the nice guy some might perceive.
Whether or not you’re interested in Crosby and his life/career, Remember My Name is a fascinating look at a pivotal person from the ‘60s and earliest days of rock, another great doc from Crowe, who should really be doing more about the history of music.
I may have mentioned before that I have practically zero interest in Walt Disney Pictures’ THE LION KING, even though I am a long-time fan of director Jon Favreau’s work… except The Jungle Book, in which I was disappointed. Maybe it’s just because I was such a fan of the original animated movie and Rudyard Kipling’s book, but not having any immediately connection to the 1994 Disney animated movie, nothing has really gotten me excited to see this one.
You can actually read more about The Lion King over at The Beat.
Bleecker Street also hopes to expand Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy THE ART OF SELF-DEFENSE nationwide into over 500 theaters, which seems a bit forward, considering that it didn’t fare nearly as well as A24’s The Farewell in limited release last weekend.
LIMITED RELEASES
Tumblr media
Before we get to the regular fare, on Wednesday, Trafalgar Releasing is the Trey Anastasio doc Between Me and My Mind in theaters across the nation on Wednesday night. Being a fan of Trey and Phish and having seen this at the Tribeca Film Festival, I can say that it’s a MUST-SEE for anyone who has ever enjoyed Trey’s vast output both with Phish and his solo groups. Besides showing Trey in the writing and production process for his latest solo album, it also shows him and the members of Phish preparing for the 2017 New Year’s Eve run at Madison Square Garden. Director Steven Cantor was given amazing access to Trey, as he also filmed a few personal conversations the singer/guitarist/songwriter has with his parents about their history together. I’m actually going to see it again tonight.. but if you’re in the New York area, go see it at the Alamo Drafthouse, where it’s hosted by the awesome Jordan Hoffman. (6:30pm show is already sold out but they’ve added a 9:20 showing.)
A couple other docs this weekend include Radu Jude’s Romanian dark comedy I Do Not Care If We Go down in History as Barbarians, which opens at the IFC Center. It’s about the dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu, who started a program of ethnic cleansing in the summer of 1941, something that’s recreated in present day by an idealistic theater director, causing controversy. It opens at the IFC Center on Friday.
Also opening at the IFC Center is Tilman Singer’s German horror film Luz (Screen Media), about a young cab driver who has been contending with a possessed woman who can endanger many lives. Lastly and also at the IFC Center, there’s Paddy Breachnach’s Rosie, the story of a mother trying to protect her homeless family, covering their struggle over 36 hours.
Joe Manganiello from Magic Mike and his wife Sofia Vergara from Modern Family star in  Raymond De Felitta’s Bottom of the 9th (Saban Films) about a baseball player named Bobby Setano, who ends up in jail at the age of 19 just as his career is taking off. 20 years later, he is tryng to win back everything he lost in this movie from the director of the excellent City Island and Rob the Mob. It’s in select theaters, On Demand and digital platforms.
There are two new docs opening at the Metrograph Friday:
Martin Bell’s Tiny: The Life of Erin Blackwell is a follow-up to his 1984 film Streetwise (see “Repertory” below), this one following up on that film’s 14-year-old subject “Tiny” and what she’s been through since then, going from drug addiction to poverty, having given birth to ten children. There’s also Marie Losier’sCassandro, the Exotico! (Film Movement) looking at the 47-year-old Saul Armendariz aka Cassandro, the openly gay champion of the Mexican exotico wrestling circuit, which features competitors in drag. The film is shot entirely on 16mm.
I just want to draw special attention to New York’s Village East Cinemas, which really has turned itself around with the variety of films and programs it’s offering, partially to compete with some of the new and revitalized arthouses. This week, it has three new movies, beginning with At War (Cinema Libre Studios), the new film from French filmmaker Stéphane Brizé (The Measure of a Man), once again teaming him with  Vincent Lindon as Laurent Amédéo, the spokesman for a company that is going to shut down its factory, putting over a thousand employees out of work.
The Village East is also one of the theaters showing Aaron Harvey’s Into the Ashes (RLJEntertainment), starring Luke Grimes as former criminal Nick Brenner who believe he has escaped his past until his old crew shows up for the money he stole from them, taking  Nick’s wife and putting him on a path for revenge.
I know very little Steve Barron’s Supervized except that it’s about four aging superheroes in an Irish retirement home and it stars the likes of Beau Bridges, Louis Gossett Jr., Tom Berenger and Fionnula Flanagan.
LOCAL FESTIVALS
This weekend at the IFC Center is the first-ever 51 Fest, honoring the “female majority on screen” by paying tribute to the women of the world with an amazing line-up of films.  The fest opens at the SVA Theater on Thursday night with Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story and then continues at the IFC Center with the New York Premieres of Bart Freundlich’s After the Wedding remake starring Julianne Moore, Paul Downs Colaizzo’s terrific Brittany Runs a Marathon (with a QnA hosted by my pal Ophira Eisenberg), Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’s doc For Sama and more. The fest will also host the World Premiere of Lisa Cholodenko’s episode of the Netflix series Unbelievable with Cholodenko and actors Kaitlyn Dever, Danielle Macdonald and Merritt Weaver appearing in person. In general, this seems like a strong new festival with lots of talent attending, so here’s hoping that this becomes a regular annual thing.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Premiering on Netflix Friday is Peter Sullivan’s suspense thriller SECRET OBSESSION, starring Brenda Song (The Social Network) as a newlywed who is brutally attacked at a rest stop leaving her with amnesia. As her husband (Mike Vogel) takes care of her at home, a detective (Dennis Haysbert) goes looking for her attacker who also might have kidnapped his daughter.
I’m more excited about the return of Jerry Seinfeld’s series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with its new season, as it’s one of my favorite Netflix series by far.
REPERTORY
Although there aren’t a ton of limited releases this week, it’s an exciting time for repertory fans for reasons you’ll discover as you go through the entries below.
METROGRAPH (NYC):
To tie-in with the release of Tiny (see above), the Metrograph is also screening of a new restoration of Martin Bell’s 1984 film Streetwise, about the kids who would gather on downtown Seattle’s Pike Street. This weekend’sLate Nites at Metrograph  is the movie musical classic, Alan Arkush’s 1979 movie Rock ‘n’ Roll High School starring the Ramones!Playtime: Family Matineesgoes with Disney’s 1979 film The Black Hole on 35mm, and you can bet I’ll be there for that.
THE NEW BEVERLY (L.A.):
As we get closer to the release of Tarantino’s 9thfilm, his rep theater will continues its James Bond series with Thunderball as the Weds. matinee and then both Weds and Thurday night is a grindhouse TRIPLE FEATURE (!!!) of Curtis Hanson’s 1972 film Sweet Kill with 1973’s Soul Hustler (with Larry Bishop in person) and the 1971 film Sweet Saviour.  The Friday/Saturday double feature is Mervyn Le Roy’s Gipsy (1962) with Sidney Pollack’s This Property is Condemned (1966), while Sunday and Monday is a Fabian double feature of Ride the Wild Surf  (1964) and Thunder Alley (1967), the latter co-starring Annette Funicello. This weekend’s KIDDEE MATINE continues the Love Bug series with Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo from 1977. Tarantino’s own Django Unchained is the Friday midnight movie with something called I Love You, Alice b. Toklas (1968), starring Peter Sellers (!), on Saturday at midnight. Monday’s matinee is the 1995 film The Basketball Diaries, starring a VERY young Leonardo DiCaprio. Tuesday night’s official GRINDHOUSE triple feature is Joe Namath’s CC & Company(1970), along with two Jack Starrett films, The Losers  from 1970 and Hollywood Man from 1976. I understand that many of the films being programmed are ones that had an influence on Tarantino’s upcoming film Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood, which hits American theaters across the country next week.
FILM FORUM (NYC):
Not be outdone by the younger New York “upstart-house” theaters, Film Forum is kicking off a month-long Burt Lancaster seriesbeginning with a week-long 4k restoration of Robert Siodmak’s (1946) The Killers, starring Lancaster and Ava Gardner. The series will then continue with classics like the Sweet Smell of Success and From Here to Eternity starting Friday, July 26, so check back next week for more on this series. Mikhail Kalatozov’s The Cranes are Flying (1957) will end Thursday to make room for above.
EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):
On Wednesday, comedian Greg Proops screens the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factoryas part of his “Greg Proops Film Club.” The “Highballs and Screwballs” series continues Thursday with Humphrey Bogart’s Key Largo  (1948) with The Palm Beach Story  (1942). On Friday, the Egyptian does a “Mikhail Kalatozov double feature” of The Cranes are Flying  (1957) and I Am Cuba  (1964), Saturday afternoon is the latest in the “Style of Sin: Pre-Code Film with Kimberly Truhler” series with two starring Kay Francis, Girls about Town (1931) and Jewel Robbery  (1933), both in 35mm, while Saturday night is a screening of Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 classic Stalker.
Just a reminder that the AERO is closed for the month of July for “repairs and upgrades” but will be back in August with its own entries in the “Highballs and Screwballs” series.
QUAD CINEMA (NYC):
I’m pretty excited about the second part of the Quad’s Fresh Meat: Giallo Restorations Part II, starting on Friday. I havent’ seen a single one of the movies but with titles like The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire and Strip Nude for Your Killer, I have to try to see some of these for sure.
FILM OF LINCOLN CENTER (NYC):
FilmLinc’s new summer series is This is Cinema Now: 21st Century Debuts, which is fairly self-explanatory but features fairly new films including Barry Jenkins’ Medicine for Melancholy, screening in a double feature with Damien Chazelle’s Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, Andrew Bujalski’s Funny Ha Hawith Maren Ade’s The Forest for the Trees, Shane Caruth’s Primer with Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko, and many more with many screening  twice but a lot only screening once. Some of them are playing as two-for-one double features and if I wasn’t dealing with Comic-Con stuff, I’d totally go see the Damien Chazelle/Barry Jenkins double feature on Saturday night.
BAM CINEMATEK (NYC):
On Friday, BAM begins a series called “Intimate Epics” which includes everything from Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia  (1999) to Hu Bo’s very recent Elephant Sitting Still to Kurosawa’s classic Seven Samurai (1954). It runs through the weekend until Tuesday.
IFC CENTER (NYC)
On Friday, IFC Center will present a 60thAnniversary revival of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic North by Northwest in a new 4k restoration. Still no word on when it’s new series will begin but presumably soon.
MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE (NYC):
The Astoria arthouse begins a retrospective called “Barbara Hammer, Superdyke” on Friday, which runs through Sunday, July 28, honoring the late filmmaker with a number of shorts series under the titles “Mediated Sensuality,” “Ecstatic Subjectivity,” “Hall of Mirrors” and more. I really don’t know anything about her films but you can learn more at the link above.
ROXY CINEMA# (NYC)
Weds. and Sunday, the Roxy shows a 35mm print of the 1964 thriller Marnie, while on Thursday, there’s a very rare screening of Roman Polanski’s 1967 dark comedy The Fearless Vampire Killers.
LANDMARK THEATRES NUART  (LA):
Friday night’s midnight offering is Gaspar Noé’s Climaxfrom earlier in the year.. so not old enough to be considered “repertory,” huh?
Next week, it’s all about Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood! (Seeing it Monday and I’ll have a review next Tuesday.)

New York News: Congressman Christopher Collins And Others Charged In Manhattan Federal Court With Insider Trading And Lying To Federal Law Enforcement Agents
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/6jxBic
New York News: Congressman Christopher Collins And Others Charged In Manhattan Federal Court With Insider Trading And Lying To Federal Law Enforcement Agents
New York – Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and William F. Sweeney Jr., the Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), announced today the arrests of CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, a Congressman representing the 27th District of New York, CAMERON COLLINS, the son of CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, and STEPHEN ZARSKY, the father of CAMERON COLLINS’s fiancée, on charges of participating in a scheme to commit insider trading relating to securities of Innate Immunotherapeutics (“Innate”), an Australian biotechnology company on whose Board of Directors CHRISTOPHER COLLINS served. As alleged in the Indictment, in June 2017, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, who possessed material, nonpublic information through his service on Innate’s board of directors, betrayed his duties of trust and confidence to Innate by providing inside information to his son, CAMERON COLLINS, about confidential drug trial results so that his son and others, including ZARSKY, could trade before the drug trial results were publicly announced. As a result of CHRISTOPHER COLLINS’s illegal tips, CAMERON COLLINS, ZARSKY, and others who received the inside information avoided a total of approximately $768,000 in losses. When later interviewed by the FBI, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, CAMERON COLLINS, and ZARSKY each made false statements to cover up their participation in the insider trading scheme.
CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, CAMERON COLLINS, and ZARSKY are each charged with conspiracy, securities fraud, wire fraud, and making false statements to the FBI. All three defendants surrendered this morning and will be presented and arraigned at 2:30 p.m. today before United States District Judge Vernon S. Broderick in federal court in the Southern District of New York.
In a separate action, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) filed a civil action against CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, CAMERON COLLINS, and ZARSKY.
U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said: “Congressman Christopher Collins is charged with insider trading and lying to the FBI, as are his son, Cameron Collins, and Stephen Zarsky, the father of Cameron’s fiancée. As alleged, Christopher Collins tipped confidential corporate information to his son, who traded on the inside information and passed it on to others, including Zarsky. Zarsky allegedly also traded on the information and tipped others.
Representative Collins, who, by virtue of his office, helps write the laws of this country, acted as if the law did not apply to him. These charges are a reminder that this is a nation of laws, and everyone stands equal before the bar of justice. The charges demonstrate again that no matter what the alleged crime, or who allegedly committed it, we stand dedicated to the pursuit of justice, without fear or favor.”
FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. said: “Congressman Christopher Collins sat on Innate Immunotherapeutics’ Board of Directors for a period of more than three years, spanning the run-up to the company’s clinical drug trial announcement in 2017. When he received confidential information that the drug had failed its trial, he tipped off investors with whom he shared a personal relationship, as we allege.
Congressman Collins thought giving his family and friends a heads-up about material, nonpublic information would benefit them in the long run, but here’s a better inside tip for those who think they can play by different rules: Access to this kind of information carries with it a significant responsibility, especially for those who hold a position of trust in our society. Act honorably and in accordance with the law, and do not lie to a special agent of the FBI.”
According to the allegations in the Indictment unsealed today in Manhattan federal court:[1]
The Insider Trading Scheme
The Scheme
In or about June 2017, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, who, in addition to serving on Innate’s board of directors, was also one of Innate’s largest shareholders, participated in a scheme to commit insider trading. Specifically, on or about June 22, 2017, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS learned that MIS416 – a multiple sclerosis drug that Innate was developing – had failed a critical drug trial that was meant to determine the drug’s clinical efficacy (the “Drug Trial”).
The negative Drug Trial results were highly confidential, and, as an insider who owed duties of trust and confidence to Innate, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS was obligated to keep the Drug Trial results secret until Innate publicly released them. Instead, in breach of those duties, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS tipped his son, CAMERON COLLINS, who was also a substantial Innate shareholder, so that CAMERON COLLINS could make timely trades and tip others before Innate publicly released the Drug Trial results. CAMERON COLLINS traded on the inside information and passed it to ZARSKY, as well as to three conspirators not named in the Indictment (“CC-1,” “CC-2,” and “CC-6”), so that they could utilize the information for the same purpose. ZARSKY, in turn, traded on the information and used it to tip three more conspirators not named in the Indictment (“CC-3,” “CC-4,” and “CC-5,”) so that they too could engage in timely trades in Innate stock. All of the trades preceded the public release of the negative Drug Trial results.
In total, these trades allowed CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, CAMERON COLLINS, and ZARSKY, as well as CC-1 through CC-6, to avoid over $768,000 in losses that they would have otherwise incurred if they had sold their stock in Innate after the Drug Trial results became public.
The Drug Trial Results
In or about October 2014, Innate initiated a Phase 2B clinical trial of its primary drug, MIS416. Successful completion of the Drug Trial was a necessary prerequisite to the commercialization of MIS416. Because Innate had no other significant products in development, its stock price was tied to the success of MIS416.
The Drug Trial was widely expected to be completed around the summer of 2017. For example, on or about June 9, 2017, Innate’s chief executive officer (“CEO”) sent various individuals, including CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, an email stating that “the delivery date for [the] review and ‘verdict’” of the Drug Trial “will [] occur at COB on US Thursday June 22nd.” As the summer progressed, individuals within Innate remained optimistic that MIS416’s Drug Trial results would be positive.
The initial Drug Trial results were made available by trial administrators to Innate’s CEO on June 22, 2017. These results established that MIS416 lacked therapeutic value in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. The results were not publicly released at that time. Instead, they were released publicly on June 26, 2017, after the U.S. markets had closed (the “Public Announcement”). Innate’s stock price subsequently crashed, dropping 92% on the first trading day following the Public Announcement.
Dissemination of the Drug Trial Results
On or about June 22, 2017, at approximately 6:55 p.m., Innate’s CEO sent an email describing the Drug Trial results to the company’s board of directors, including CHRISTOPHER COLLINS. The email explained to Innate’s board of directors for the first time that the Drug Trial had been a failure. The email began, in part, “I have bad news to report,” and continued to explain that “the top line analysis of the ‘intent to treat’ patient population (ie every subject who was successfully enrolled in the study) would pretty clearly indicate[s] ‘clinical failure.’” The email continued, “Top-line 12-month data . . . show no clinically meaningful or statistically significant differences in [outcomes] between MIS416 and placebo,” and concluded by stating, “No doubt we will want to consider this extremely bad news. . . .”
At the time CHRISTOPHER COLLINS received this email, he was attending the Congressional Picnic at the White House. At 7:10 p.m., CHRISTOPHER COLLINS replied to the email, stating, in part, “Wow. Makes no sense. How are these results even possible???” After responding to the Innate CEO’s email, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS called his son, CAMERON COLLINS. They traded six missed calls between 7:11 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.. At 7:16 p.m., CHRISTOPHER COLLINS and CAMERON COLLINS spoke for more than six minutes. During that six-minute phone call, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS told CAMERON COLLINS, in sum and substance, that MIS416 had failed the Drug Trial.
CHRISTOPHER COLLINS did not trade himself, and his Innate stock ultimately declined by millions of dollars in value when the Drug Trial results were made public on June 26, 2017. As CHRISTOPHER COLLINS well knew, however, he was virtually precluded from trading his own shares for practical and technical reasons. For example, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS was already under investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics (“OCE”) in connection with his holdings in, and promotion of, Innate. Indeed, he had been interviewed by OCE personnel on or about June 5, 2017, just 17 days earlier. Accordingly, he did not trade his own stock and instead tipped CAMERON COLLINS.
Trading and Tipping by CAMERON COLLINS and ZARSKY
CAMERON COLLINS began placing orders to sell his Innate shares the morning after he received inside information from CHRISTOPHER COLLINS. Between the morning of Friday, June 23, 2017, and the close of the market on Monday, June 26, 2017, CAMERON COLLINS sold approximately 1,391,500 shares of Innate stock. These sales allowed CAMERON COLLINS to avoid approximately $570,900 in losses.
Furthermore, after learning the Drug Trial results from CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, on or about the night of June 22, 2017, CAMERON COLLINS provided the Drug Trial results to at least the following three sets of individuals so that they could trade in advance of the Public Announcement: (1) his now fiancée, CC-1; (2) ZARSKY and ZARSKY’s wife, CC-2; and (3) CAMERON COLLINS’s friend, CC-6. Collectively, these individuals avoided approximately $186,620 in losses as a result of their trading on inside information.
On or about the morning of June 23, 2017, ZARSKY provided the negative Drug Trial results that he had learned from CAMERON COLLINS and CC-1 to at least the following individuals, among others, or otherwise caused them to trade or attempt to trade in advance of the Public Announcement: (1) his brother, CC-3; (2) his sister, CC-4; and (3) his longstanding friend, CC-5. Collectively, these individuals avoided approximately $10,900 in losses as a result of their trading on inside information.
Concealment of Trading
After the Public Announcement, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS took steps to prevent the public from learning that CAMERON COLLINS had sold significant portions of his Innate stock on or about June 23, 2017, and June 26, 2017, before the Public Announcement. For example, on or about June 28, 2017, one of CHRISTOPHER COLLINS’s staff members issued a statement to a local reporter. This statement stated that “Neither Christopher Collins, [nor] his daughter . . . have sold shares prior, during or after Innate’s recent stock halt,” and that “Cameron Collins has liquidated all his shares after the stock halt was lifted, suffering a substantial financial loss.” This statement was written in a manner designed to mislead the public into believing that CAMERON COLLINS had not sold any Innate shares prior to the Public Announcement. As CHRISTOPHER COLLINS explained in an email about press coverage surrounding Innate, “We want this to go away.”
False Statements to the FBI
On or about April 25, 2018, Special Agents from the FBI separately interviewed CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, CAMERON COLLINS, and ZARSKY. During these interviews, and as detailed in the Indictment, CHRISTOPHER COLLINS, CAMERON COLLINS, and ZARSKY made false statements to the FBI to cover up their participation in the insider trading scheme.
