J.T. Realmuto catches a pitch while batting
Catching is incredibly hard, so the backstops who can play great defense and consistently produce at the plate are few and far between. J.T. Realmuto is one of those few especially gifted players -- and it seems that he's found a way to combine those skillsets.
The Phillies opened a weekend series in Cleveland on Friday and, after working the count full in his third-inning at-bat against Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams, Realmuto was granted time with Williams already mid-delivery.
Williams slowed his delivery and unleashed a 54.1 mph floater -- you can decide whether it's fair to call it an eephus pitch -- that tailed toward Realmuto in the batter's box.
Without much fanfare at all, Realmuto caught the ball one-handed, then passed the ball to his counterpart, David Fry, and the at-bat resumed as though nothing so unusual had happened. (Realmuto subsequently flied out to center.) But, at the very least, the Phillies on the bench seemed to enjoy the moment as much as we did.
