his breath hitched slightly in his throat as he felt her suck on his fingers for a second, the skin of his neck turning a light shade of pink.

"i think it's good," elánis whispered in a smoky voice, her eyes never breaking away from carmen's.

he always felt like a fucking puddle when she looked up at him like that. he swore he could see her pupils dilate over her pretty gray irises. the way her dark lashes fluttered slowly up at him made his heart beat faster.

without a word, carmen leaned his head down to kiss his girl, one hand resting on her lower back while the other found its way onto her collarbone. the way his thumb slightly rubbed against the side of her neck made elánis moan quietly into his mouth, allowing his tongue to graze over hers slowly.

"there's the birthday girl," he whispered quietly, a small smile etching onto his face.

elánis' lips stretched out into a soft smile as she heard him speak. she hid her face in her arm that was stretched out over her pillow, his proximity to her making her feel all shy.

carmen chuckled as he playfully poked her underarm to get her to look at him.

"what, now y'dont want me lookin at you?" he teased her. "c'mon."

she squealed lightly into her pillow as she tried to move away from his fingers, reluctantly lifting her head up at him so he could see her face.

"pretty girl."

elánis rested the side of her face onto her arm, her dimples deepening into her cheeks as she smiled at carmen. he ran his hand down her hair to smooth it out before bringing it down to her face. he gently caressed her smooth skin with his thumb as he looked down at her.

her eyes were beginning to brighten up as she was becoming more awake, yet her blinks were still slow and tired.

carmen reached into his pocket a pulled out his lighter to light the candle on the cake that he had set on her nightstand. elánis' mouth dropped open slightly as she sat up in bed, finally looking at the decorations that were set up.

it was hard for carmen not to smile at her reaction. he sat down across from her, holding the small bow cake in his hand with a single lit candle.

"i loveee this," elánis gushed softly, her face illuminated by the tiny warm flame in front of her.

carmen lulled his head to the side as he tapped her chin with the side of his finger. "happy birthday baby, make a wish."

he watched as her eyes fluttered closed and her pretty, glossy lips puckered together to blow out her candle. she leaned forward as the smoke began to drift out into the air and pressed her lips against carmen's.

once she pulled away, he stood up from the bed to grab her flowers and gift boxes, arranging them all around her as she held her cake. elánis playfully groaned once she saw him pull out his phone. "i look crazy right now," she whined, hiding her face in one of her hands.

"shut up and fuckin smile," carmen shook his head while grinning at her through the camera.

he took about seven different pictures before setting his phone down and sitting next to her.

"i told you i would've been happy with just flowers baby," elánis smiled up at him before looking at the presents that surrounded her on the bed, admiring the bows and sparkly wrapping paper. carmen leaned down and kissed the top of her head, lightly rubbing her back as he sat down next to her.

"well, i didn't wanna give you just flowers," he smirked.

elánis got two new perfume bottles, a new pair of vintage jeans, two pairs of heels (one pair of kitten heels and one pair thigh high boots), and a new gold anklet.

with every gift she'd open she would kiss carmy as a thank you before wrapping her arms around him in a hug.

they both laid on the bed, wrapping paper discarded onto the floor and a few loose flower petals scattered messily across her white sheets. elánis reached over, plucking her light pink candle out of her cake.

"y'need to get forks baby," she muttered to carmen.

now normally he would've nodded his head and already been on his way to the kitchen. but, he couldn't focus on anything except how elá's lips looked around the candle as she sucked the frosting off of it.

he cleared his throat softly as his eyes scanned her face.

"how is it?"

elánis licked her lips softly while nodding her head. "good as hell. i haven't had valencia cake in a minute."

"lemme taste," carmen said, his voice sounding low.

carmen wiped his thumb across her lips, leaving a glob of frosting on her mouth, making elánis furrow her eyebrows and drop her mouth open.

he knew his girl, so before elá had the chance to complain he leaned his head up to meet hers in a deep kiss, his hand finding it's way up cradle the back of her head.

she pushed her tongue against his, making him grunt out something that almost sounded like a whine.

he gently moved to hover over her, guiding her to lay down on her back as he continued to kiss her. she tilted her heels away from him to try and kiss his neck, only for him to cut her off with his lips once more.

"mm baby," she mumbled against his lips, the kiss becoming more and more sloppy.

"shh sh," he shushed her quietly, his puckered lips grazing over hers. "it's your birthday. lemme treat you."

the window of elánis' apartment was cracked open, letting cold air creep into her bedroom as her landlord refused to lower the heat. laying on her side, she watched the smoke from her palo santo and sage oil diffuser get lost as it floated out into the chicago air, mixing in with the nightly fog that covered up the moon every night. she just wore a white t-shirt that was supposed to end at the middle of her thighs, however her position underneath her blanket made it bunch up at her hips.

carmen brought his warm, slightly rough hand up to brush elánis' wet hair off of her cheek, ignoring the wet spot it had left on her white pillow case. the faint smell of vanilla and coconut began to fill his nose as he brought his face closer to the skin of the crook of her neck. he had watched her apply her lotion to her freshly showered body before they laid down in bed. bringing a thumb up to wipe her cheek, he felt a dull pit in his stomach begin to form.

"what's wrong?" he asked softly, propping himself up on his arm, eyebrows furrowing with concern.

elánis shook her head as she continued to look out of the window, not wanting to show carmen her teary eyes. "elá," carmen tried again, lightly taking hold of her smooth shoulder. "baby please don't cry."

she sniffled, making a tiny sound that made carmen's chest hurt. "i just feel confused," she admitted in a small quiet voice.

immediately carmen could feel his heart drop as he stood quiet for a few seconds. "c-confused about what?" he asked hesitantly. if she had said anything about ending whatever they had going on he would've broken down right then and there. elánis rolled onto her back, looking up at the man who laid next to her. once her glassy hazel eyes met his blue ones, he knew he was a goner. he couldn't take her sad eyes. his breathing began to get slightly quicker as he looked down at her dark lashes, her tears making them clump together. "you've just been so distant carm," she said, trying her hardest not to let her voice crack.

"i know you wanted to take things slowly and you know i've been more than okay with that. but now you're barely answering my calls or trying to see me, and i just- i don't know," elánis' words came out in a soft voice as she looked up at her ceiling, rather than maintaining eye contact with carmen. she couldn't help the silent tears that rolled down her cheeks and pooled in the small crevices of her collar bone as she spoke.

she swallowed as she let out another soft sniffle, letting her head lull over, her chin resting on her shoulder as she looked back up at carmen. "i just thought you liked me."

her words were barely a whisper, barely audible enough for carmen to hear. but trust, what he did hear made his heart fucking crack.

he rushed to sit up in the bed, mumbling a string of no no no no as he reached down to hold elánis' body. pulling her to sit on his lap, she kept her gaze towards her window, too embarrassed to look at him in the face. she wiped at the wetness on her cheeks with the heel of her hand as carmen held the thickness of her hips in his shaky hands.

"can you look at me, pretty?" he asked quietly, using his nickname destined for only her.

when he was met with just silence, he reached out to gently grasp his hand around her wrist to bring her hand away from her face, lightly toying with the dainty gold bracelet that she never took off. "please elánis."

reluctantly, elánis turned her head to look at carmen, her sad eyes meeting his.

"trust me when i say that i like you. a lot," he told her as he caressed her soft cheek with his thumb. "i like you so much."

elánis gave him a small head nod while fiddling with the manicured nails that rested in her lap. "i like you too carmy," she said so quietly, her voice making carmen want to melt.

"why have you been ignoring my calls?" she asked as her brows furrowed.

carmen swallowed thickly, bringing his hands down to hold her smaller ones. "i, uh," he started, blinking a few times down at her hands before continuing. "i like you so much that it scares me."

the girl sitting in his lap felt the tears in her waterline threaten to spill over as she quietly asked, "why does it scare you?" carmen sighed deeply as he tried to find the words within himself. "i've never had anything like this before, you know?" he tried, knitting his eyebrows together as the words came out of his mouth. "a, um, a girlfriend or anything."

"i don't mind," elánis told him reassuringly, keeping her voice small. "we're taking things slowly."

"doesn't that bother you?" he asked. "waiting on me?"

elánis' shoulders dropped slightly, "carmen i go above and beyond for you. why would that bother me?"

the room fell silent, almost as if the universe was giving the two time to respond. yet neither of them could. lifting his gaze to meet elá's, carmen began to slowly shake his head. "i'm sorry," he said with a hushed voice, his throat beginning to feel tight.

elánis stared up at him. "i just wish you'd let me care about you the way i'm trying to."

"i'm sorry," carmen repeated himself, his thumb running against the plush skin of her thigh softly. "it's not right for me to do that to you. me getting in my own head shouldn't affect you, okay? it's not right."

he sighed deeply before clearing his throat of the hoarseness that creeped into it.

"i dont want to let what we have go elánis."

leaning forward in his lap, elánis delicately draped her arms around his neck as he leaned against her headboard. instinctively, his larger arms tightened around her lower back and he squeezed his eyes shut in the crook of her neck. the two stayed silent, only occasional small sniffles filled the room as they melted into each other. elánis was barely beginning to know how much carmen put into his job. he operates by tuning everything out and focusing on his craft. that's why he's so good at what he does.

carmen swore he was a loser ever since he was a little boy. so why would he think he's worthy of a girl's care?

elánis didn't care about any of that though. she knew that she'd always show up whenever he called for her. she wanted to do that. she wanted to show him the affection that he'd been missing his entire life.

"you need a light?" she asked him curiously, keeping some distance as she stopped in front of him.

she didn't smoke cigarettes. but, she had an insane candle collection, an obsession with palo santo and sage, and liked to smoke blunts in her bathtub.

so obviously she took her baby pink lighter everywhere she went.

carmen's head shot up as soon as he realized the girl was talking to him. "uh, yeah. please, if y'don't mind," he said awkwardly, his eyes involuntarily scanning her face. her black hair was sleeked into a ponytail with a deep side part, the ponytail part so long it reached the leather belt that tightened her gray slacks around her waist. she wore thin rectangular framed glasses that barely hid her dark lashes and eye makeup. she wore a glossy pale pink shade on her lips with a brown lip liner defining her pouty lip shape.

carmen thought she was beautiful.

so beautiful that he worked up every ounce of courage he had to ask for her number before she rushed away to work. she quickly took his phone and typed in her number in his notes app, also typing out her full name and putting the kissy lips emoji next to it.

carmen's work hours honestly sucked, but most times when he was free he made it a point to see elánis, even if it was just for an hour. that's how they started going on casual dates. he would sometimes pick her up from work and drop her home during his late breaks, or he would go with her to get the strawberry-vanilla smoothie she drank every morning. tonight however, was the first time they got to spend more than an hour together. they got to drink, eat dinner together, listen to music, and talk for hours.

elánis leaned her stomach against the island slightly, the deep v cut in her shirt making the glowy skin of her breasts more exposed as she tapped her french tipped nails against the countertop near her bouquet. carmen's eyes slowly trailed down to her chest before looking back up at her face. "lemme help you with the flowers," he said softly, grabbing them with his large hand and heading towards her sink.

elánis peeled her heels off as she watched carmen run water over the stems, cutting away the extra branches. her bare feet padded against the tile floor as she reached up into a cabinet, pulling out a clear vase. "you think this ones pretty?" she asked carmen while placing the case next to the sink.

he chuckled quietly as he nodded his head, "yeah elá, it's real pretty."

elánis continued to watch carmy prep her flowers, her eyes almost never leaving his arms. his tattooed biceps flexed involuntarily with every single move he made, and a faint vein began to expose itself through his skin. "next time you cook you should let me come over earlier to watch," she told him, her head lulling to the side as she watched his muscles tense.

"oh yeah?" he asked with the corner of his mouth lifting as he turned his head slightly, watching how she looked at him.

"mhm," elánis mumbled, watching him place the bouquet in the vase and fill it up with some more water. she moved away from the sink to walk up to carmen, making him lean back against the island once more and look down at her. her hazel eyes seemed darker in the warm lighting of her apartment, especially when she was just looking at him through her thick eyelashes. absentmindedly, she traced his forearm that was resting on top of the counter with her thumb nail as she took hold of his other arm, bringing his hand down to rest on her waist.

"you had a good time tonight?" carmen asked, trying to cover up his shaking voice by being quiet.

"i did," elánis admitted, sounding all sultry. carmen couldn't help but be obsessed with her voice. she spoke so calmly and feminine, yet there was a soft rasp to her tone that always made his cheeks grow hot. "did you?"

he nodded, tucking his pointer finger in the loop of her jeans to gently tug her body closer to his. "i did."

keeping one arm propped up on the counter behind him and one hand on the girl's waist, carmen leaned down and gently nudged her nose with his, feeling the slight coolness of her minty breath fan against his lips.

"that's good," elánis whispered, tilting her face upwards so her lips ghosted over his.

a grunt that sounded almost like a "yeah" was all carmen could get out before he closed the tiny space between them. he pressed his lips against her so delicately that it felt as if they were barely there, his heart beating the fuck out of his chest.

he had never kissed her before, he was always too nervous.

elánis smirked against his lips, softly grazing the tip of her tongue against his bottom lip, silently letting him know that this is what she wanted.

carmen's moved his arm from behind himself and gently grabbed the back of elánis' neck, his large calloused fingers pressing against her skin to hold her in place as he kissed her again. a low, quiet whine escaped his lips as she deepened the kiss, slowly pushing her tongue in his mouth and pulling out, gently pulling his bottom lip with her teeth.

"what time you gotta wake up tomorrow?" elánis asked, carmen pecking her lips again.

"like 5:30," he mumbled.

elánis stood close to him, the middle of her stomach pressed up against his belt buckle, as she turned her head back to look at the time on her oven. it was almost 1.

"you're gonna be tired," she told him softly, looking up at his perfectly blue eyes. she ran her nail against the darkened skin underneath his eye and sighed. "you need sleep carmy."

he stood quiet for a second as he leaned his face against her delicate touch.

"this is way better than sleep," he said quietly, rubbing his thumb against the jean material on her hip.

elá giggled quietly and nodded her head, "means we gotta do this more often."

"yeah," carmen said, "yeah i guess so."

tilting her face up towards carmen, elánis gently held his jaw as she pressed two baby kisses on his lips. "text me when you get home, okay?"

he nodded, slightly chasing her lips with his as she pulled away. "okay."

carmen grabbed his jacket off of her barstool and shrugged it back on, stuffing his wallet and car keys into the pockets of his vintage jeans.

elánis watched him silently, leaning her head against her apartment door with a small smile on her face.

carmen walked over to the door, ready to head out. "goodnight elá," he looked down at her, lips still plump and pink from earlier. elánis pressed her lips against his one more time, lingering there for a few extra seconds before resting her bare heels back on the floor.

"night carm," she blinked slowly up at him with half-lidded eyes, making her lashes look all pretty. "get home safe."

with a sleepy and small smile, carmen promised her that he would and walked down the hallway of her apartment. once he got home he texted her, smiling at the picture she had sent him of her in bed with her cheeks all puffed out and her glossy lips puckered close to the camera. her skin was shiny and he could see that her hair was damp, knowing that she had just got into bed herself.

he was obsessed with the idea of more casual dates with her.
