April is cesarean section awareness month. As a newborn photographer and Mum of two, both delivered by caesarian section, I can confirm that a cesarean section is NOT a lucky break. It is not the "easy" way out. A cesarean is NOT glorified labour, there is NOTHING glorious about it. When I ended up with an emergency C-section due to my first baby being breach and going into distress after 12 hours of labour I felt cheated out of the natural birth I had mentally been preparing for. But what upset and surprised me even more were the comments that were made over the next few months from friends, family and post natal group ladies... comments like.. Ahh too posh to push You were lucky You cheated. Here's what I DO think when I see a Mum who has just had a c-section . You poor thing, you have been cut open to save both your babies life and your own, you have had hands inside you pulling you about, you feel as though you have been stabbed in the gut over and over and are scared to stand upright, you won't be able to drive for 6 weeks after this major abdominal surgery but you still need to care and look after a newborn baby, you will have a scar which will never disappear, and if it's like mine it will look like someone has hidden a hot dog there....... so if you had a c-section, you were really were unlucky. You see, when it comes to having a baby there is definitely no easy way out.. You do what you have to do. Either way, a human is leaving your body and there is no right or wrong way. If you were in a car crash and you couldn't get out of the doors, you would have to find another way if it's the only chance of survival.. it's the same. So my reply should have been ... 'Shut up Betty, I'm a survivor!'. So I'll end this blurb with a big hug for all of those who have been through a cesarean.
