Imogen: FINE. For the sake of saving the world, we can go kind of in the direction of my hometown where my dad still lives so the skyship will know where to find us.
Ya know if my daughter could read my thoughts and I didn't want her to be exposed to the full range of resentment and grief I held for her mother and her powers, I too (foolishly, cruelly, selfishly), would keep a distance.
This ain't the cute spyxfamily version of a kid with telepathy. Imogen grew up seeing every negative emotion her father ever directed at her, regardless of how much he tried to hide it from her.
Was he a good father? No.
Was he a depressed man trying his best? Undoubtedly.
matt and laura for the third campaign in a row give us such a compelling father-daughter relationship. they've all been great, I especially liked the midnight morose talk between jester and the gentleman, and 'if I could pull the blood of you from my veins I would' remains iconic. this salt of the earth man of a few words southern daddy is such an interesting new one.
Orym broaching the subject of F.C.G's wellbeing by bringing up his own tendency to push aside his feelings in favor of focusing on other peoples problems is- a wonderfully thoughtful way of doing it. Just- really nice.
The way Relvin maintains physical distance from Imogen - greeting her from far away, leaving without instructions for her to follow, tossing the locket - until he just barely manages at the very end to approach and give her a pat on the shoulder... I love how much history is told in the negative spaces
The absolute nuance of how Imogen addresses her parents is just mind-blowingly good.
She calls her dad “dad” when she talks about him to the Hells, but in that vulnerable moment when she tells him she doesn’t want him to be afraid of her she calls him “daddy”.
She calls her mom “mom” most of the time and “mother” often when she’s asking after her to other people; but when she flatly told Liliana that she was tired of running she called her “mother”.
And when she got the locket, the first concrete piece of evidence that her mom loved her at some point, and probably does still, she called her “mama”.
“But my analysis of their union is that it’s their differences that make them stronger together” - F. R. I. D. A.
“I don’t know, it’s just a vibe you can catch when you see them… It’s like a body language, like when your physical comfortable in the space with someone” -Deanna
“What happens if you succeed? Well, that's the question mark. I don't know what comes next. But you know, we're probably getting ahead of ourselves because everything is maybe going to turn inside out in 13 days. I think it'll be fine. I like that. I like that optimism. Optimism is the bet -ism. Smiley night. You too.”-FCG/Orym
Imogen "It's up to you Laudna. I know it was uncomfortable the last time. I don't want it to happen again"
Laudna "I'm more than happy to be there if you want me there. If you want to be- if you need that support."
Imogen "Um..."
FCG "We're doing it. You're coming."
Laudna "All right."
FCG "She needs you. She feels better when you're around."
Imogen couldn't voice what she wanted because Laudna got stuck last time and she doesn't want that to happen again. Laudna wants to be there for Imogen, but doesn't want to overstep. So FCG took it in their own hands to tell Laudna what Imogen so clearly wanted.
I'm loving all these moments when Ashley, Liam, Matt, Sam etc are pushing Imodna together.
Like. Isnt it GLORIOUS though. All these shared mistakes. All these unfortunate patterns. All these missteps repeated in betwen three people who care about each other. Liliana doesn't talk about her powers until late on, and Relvin isn't sure if she was hiding it all along. Imogen asks about her mother, and is shocked when her father actually responds. Relvin tucks the information away from Imogen in a vain hope it makes things easier. Liliana pulls away, and away, until it is too late, until she's gone.
(Imogen doesn't quite talk to her friends about everything. Imogen climbs out of a window and calls her mother in the dead of night. Imogen left. It was supposed to be a kindness.)
Liliana says: Run. Before my storm sweeps you up.
Relvin says: She was worried you were going to follow in her footsteps.
They say: It seemed easier for you to not know. Its best for you to run, before you get swept up in my storm. I think it was for your protection.
They say: I wish she had told me. I wish you had told me. I wish-
What a gesture of love, trying to protect your loved ones, trying to keep them away from things that will hurt them. What a heartbreak, to be the thing that will hurt them, to lock yourself away, to isolate, to hurt, to leave.
What a thing, to be told: Don't follow in my footsteps. Don't do as I did. And learn the same lessons, the same way, the same mistakes, written in love and loss, written in red.
