I see a lot of characters older than a teen protag slotted into dad/uncle roles in found family tropes but frankly when I was 15-18 if anybody wanted to parent me I would politely remove myself from the situation. n if they insisted I would probably bite

#like no I totally get it and it can make for a good story and when you just want that found family comfort #but also like idk. I think teenagers esp those used to being on their own are gonna be a lot more bitey about it #the specific dynamic of uhhh yea no this isn’t my dad he’s my coworker friend guy. yea like 20 years older than me yea #is also under appreciated and rather funny I think.#I think a lot of late teens too basically think of themselves as fully grown adults more or less & responsible for themselves #and the dynamic of ppl around them going ‘this is a child’ is also very funny #I still remember the shocked look on my coworkers faces when I said I’d just turned 18 lol. Very funny #even if they end up as a dad/uncle figure I think the fraught process in between reaching that point is also very fun to explore…#bytebun rambles #tropes

Debugging that was evil. 47 variables per equation #ok success. now you want me to recreate that with another programming language? I think back on my own “talent” as an artist & it’s like. never seen such a complete lack of design sense or visual aesthetic in a kid so good at capturing forms

#the complete lack of ability to do fashion or interior design or etc etc any sort of visual aesthetic is really WEIRD vs. the rest of my #artist friends who tend to care much more about these things. I have an academic understanding of aesthetics #Skill at art is a trained thing for sure but usually ppl will have lopsided abilities when they begin and that is what I’d call ‘talent’#even when it’s often transferable skills from previous interests #what I drew reflected heavily what I was interested in which is true for most artists I think but it was such an #overwhelming quantity of work for someone who didn’t end up going into art. So much life drawing for no real reason except that I #loved drawing people and cartoons and the objects around me.#and so much joy and love for colour…#my work improved at a breakneck pace as soon as I got the ability to lay down colour very quickly (got a tablet)#[blue period voice] I loved art because it was made by people for people #bytebun rambles #if I drew cars or buildings instead they might’ve given me the autism label real fast huh

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enjoying particular types of art more than others, but the knee jerk disdain people have towards modern art is disappointing…

I think u have to be ok with not connecting to everything that u see. That’s just fine. Art is like food and there’s going to be some stuff that just doesn’t work for u regardless of if it’s objectively well done or not. There’s a flavour of anti-intellectualism and inferiority complex that seems to accompany ppls hatred of modern art, this discomfort that they “don’t get it” when that’s like. Actually fine. Some stuff u will appreciate once u learn context and others, regardless… u just won’t! I still hate beans & legumes

That being said I also have friends who would rather order the same mac & cheese at a restaurant every single time than risk getting something they won’t enjoy — or won’t enjoy as much. But art costs u very little to try in comparison, so why not try it?

#the other part is stuff like rothkos just works way better in person than on a screen. True of all art but especially true of these big #pieces with such delicately crafted sensory experiences. Also if art makes u uncomf or disdainful that’s also an elicited reaction.#Why do u feel that way? What cultural reasons might cause u to think of it that way? anyways everybody should read blue period.#I personally don’t think there’s rlly anything different between “low art” or “high art”. Ppl get insecure abt what they rlly like or #something and it bleeds into this ‘us’ vs ‘them’ mentality… it’s true we should ask who’s art is curated and preserved and for what reasons #but like. Humanity is humanity. It’s up to you if you want to listen. I just think it’s a shame to turn away before u give it a chance #That being said I’m still a basic Impressionism bitch.
