Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
i was rewatching s1 and i think i found something?? i might just be reading into it tho
in this scene jonathan is talking to hopper about him going to lonnies bc if hopper goes then will would get scared and hide
“hes good at hiding you know?”
“well cops are good at finding, okay?”
wills good at hiding his feelings away from everyone, we see that all throughout s2 with his episodes, the mindflayer and his drawings, in s3 hiding the fact hes mad about them not playing with him anymore (until he tells mike), and all throughout s4 about his feelings for mike.
in s2 hopper is the one who gets him to talk about the drawing he made and what it was about so what if hopper is the one who helps him open up and helps him realize its okay to be feeling the way he is? yk like having a little heart to heart, it would build up their bondd
Both of these scenes are so similar and the captions both say … after the just! I can’t help but think they planned on byler endgame/ Mike being gay since s1.
You're gonna sit there and tell me that Mike had feelings for El, yet when El was crying for reassurance that Mike loved her--
He couldn't have gotten the fck up and went over to comfort her??
Like this????
This is where the "he couldn't say ily because he was afraid If he said it-" yadda, yadda, yadda, falls apart.
Even if he couldn't say the words aloud, we have seen that he is able to show his affection and love through physical touch.
(Which did wonders for Will feeling cared for and supported, btw)
Also, even if he couldn't say the words "I love you", he could have spoken softly to her, gently reassuring her of how she was special to him.
Like tbis???
Singling her out from the rest and assuring her his feelings haven't changed and home isn't home without her??
There are so many ways that conversation could've gone to make E feel loved, even if he couldn't say it. We know Mike is capable of showing it.
But he did not use his love language with El. He wouldn't even go near her to hold hands or even put an arm around her, nor did he try to say he missed her or that they were a team.
So we've seen Mike wearing Will's shoes in s5 for whatever reason.... but could it be symbolism?
in simple words, literally AND figuratively Mike is putting himself in Will's shoes. figuratively, because s5 Mike is going to experience what s4 Will went through. Their roles are going to be reversed.
the phrase "to put yourself in someone else's shoes" is to experience (or at least imagine) what they went/are going through.
firstly, s4 was strictly filmed from Will's pov, showing almost nothing from Mike's. this does make it feel as if mikes character arc has been left on a cliff hanger since the ending of s3, where we did get to see more into Mike's mind, and that spoke a lot to us.
so far, what we can confirm is that Will Byers is in love with Mike Wheeler, mostly from his pov being the main focus of the love triangle in s4. they made it clear for us. yet, Mike's perspective is still blurry.
thats the main reason why i think it would only make sense for s5 to show Mike's pov a LOT, and reveal some things that weren't necessarily obvious in s4 (for one, Mike's feelings for Will).
knowing we're finally going to be seeing Mike's pov, we'll see him pining over Will, just like Will did s4. they are going to switch their roles on screen, we'll see Mike, now that he doesn't have to deal with his relationship issues with El and his (not necessarily) new issue of how he doesn't think Will could ever love him back. and Will, is going to be trying to resolve issues with his connections to vecna.
my main point is, the writers are going to figuratively put Mike in wills shoes. Mike is going to be pining over Will this season, and it will be explicitly shown this time.
not done!!!
these are Mike and Will's shoes in s2. keep note of the designs and colors.
these are Mike's shoes in s5. coincidentally (not), they have the same design as his shoes in s2. but the colors seem to be the opposite?
now these are Will's shoes in s5. they too keep the same design as his own shoes in s2, and the colors are opposite, just like Mike's shoes.
or... the colors are reversed.
Mike and Will's shoes kept the same designs from s2, but the colors are reversed, just like their roles will be in s5.
So was nobody going to tell me that there is a Freddy Krueger movie filled with gay subtext that the Duffers very clearly and obviously referenced to queercode both Mike and Will since S1?
The main character is Jessie, a suburban teenager that finds himself haunted by Freddy Krueger, who wishes to possess him and go on a killing spree. Now this reminds me of Will initially, but Jessie has way more similarities with Mike than Will.
For example, Jessie's father 100% inspired Ted Wheeler, in fact he's a straight up rip off.
And this is Holly.
Look at how the screenwriters discuss this, including Robert freaking Englund himself (who plays Freddy Krueger and Victor Creel)
The screenwriters specifically talk about how one of the things the production designer (who was gay) did to add gay subtext was a sign on Jessie's bedroom door that said 'NO out of town CHICKS ALLOWED'
The Duffers know this, I'm sure.
So this ....
This freaking ONE WAY sign pointing into Mike's closet? Deliberate, legitimate gay subtext.
Okay so I’m rewatching season 1 and I have to bring something up, so obviously the line “only love makes you that crazy sweetheart” is super important to us as bylers because of the crazy together scene. But, I think we need to talk more about the line right after that
“And that damn stupid”
This line is clearly directed at Jonathan beating up Steve, she’s calling it stupid and saying love makes that happen. Now let’s think back to just 2 episodes before.
Mikes response to Troy making fun of Will.
And then to add onto that, the scene where Troy and James track them down in the woods, in retaliation to when Mike shoved him, happens directly after the “and that damn stupid”
Mike didn't love the El "the moment" he saw her. But there IS someone he did...
It wasn't romantic love, as Mike and Will were too young. But it was more than just a playground friendship. Most kids make friends simply playing together and probably don't remember the day they met very well.
But Mike remembers it vividly, and so does Will. And the way Mike tells it in s2e8, he had feelings for Will when he saw him on the swings alone:
Mike loved Will when he saw him. He didn't want him to be lonely. Mike also felt alone. Perhaps he sensed they were different from the other boys somehow?
He could have just joined him on the swings or said they should play. Instead he asked if they could be friends. The way Mike tells it, it had the intensity of a proposal.
"And you said yes... you said yes..."
"It was the best thing I've ever done."
It took Mike longer to feel love for El. But for Will he loved him at first sight. And in more than a friends way, but in a BEST FRIENDS way, the way kids can and do love each other. The only thing different is that Mike and Will continued to feel that same intense bond they had as small children, when they were older in s2. And we now see it maturing into something else in s4 (and s5!)...
P.S. Follow and read my blog! I have so much to say!
Okay, offering up my first post. I haven’t seen this touched on before so sorry if someone else has already pointed it out, but just wanna put it out there I promise I’m not stealing any ideas just in case I’m missing something.
But anyway. I just found it really interesting how the shopping scene in s3 plays out. So if you’ve done theater or anything like that before, you know that blocking is important in acting. For the most part, actors are told where to stand in scenes and don’t just kind of do their own thing. I’m sure there’s plenty of exceptions, but that’s typically what happens.
So in s3, we have the sequence of Mike, Will, and Lucas shopping at Starcourt for El. Now, there’s 4 moments when all three of them are shown standing together in different sections of the mall. Here’s the first, when they’re coming out of the jewelry store:
Now let’s skip to the third, when they’re testing perfumes:
And finally, when they’re sitting down after giving up:
So what’s important about these three moments? They have the exact same blocking. Mike is always in the middle, leading the group of course, but Will is always on the left and Lucas is always on the right. You can chalk this up as Coincidence™, but for it to be exactly the same in each shot? That seems pretty intentional for three different shots and not really like zero thought went into it at all.
But okay, they have the same blocking in each shot. Why is that important? Let’s go back to the shot I skipped, the second part of this sequence. This is what we’re shown when they get to the lingerie store:
Now their positions are switched. This should be especially apparent because Mike is no longer in the middle leading the group, which is what he should be doing throughout this entire sequence. And it makes perfect sense narratively. In the other three scenes, Lucas and Will are in a similar situation: just tagging along as Mike looks for something for El. But now, Mike and Will are the ones in a similar situation: both horrified of the lingerie store, both terrified of women.
And if you watch this scene, all three of them are clearly uncomfortable. But by putting Lucas at the front of this shot, it is being implied that he is the least out of place there out of the three of them. All I’m saying is putting Mike alongside Will in the background of this scene doesn’t really scream straight. Especially when they were lined up in the exact same way in the other three shots, almost as if to emphasize that something different is going on in this one…
And if that isn’t evidence enough, it becomes very difficult to deny when this tweet exists:
