out of curiosity, how did you decide that dte would be 22 chapters long? did you map out everything you wanted to include in each chapter beforehand?

pretty much! I started with the base--I had 6 solid ideas for kanto chapters. then i decided on a max of 3 chapters per other region starting at kalos, so thats 15 chapters right there. then plus that first chapter, which comes out to 22.

i actually need to edit it, since we didn’t do a third johto chapter!! so it’s actually gonna end up being 21!!

basically, since this fic was built on the foundation of kin memories, i ended up writing down what was most vivid. most of this was kanto, some of it was scattered in kalos & hoenn. if u look on my kin blogs you can actually find what are essentially the earliest drafts of DTE chapters just. written into text posts and out there.

what came next was just filling in the blanks! ven and i would just talk about a region and who could realistically be there. we were very intent on putting iris in kalos, for instance, because she was screwed out of a kalos cameo like the other pokegirls. we knew serena would be done in hoenn by now and probably kanto & johto, so we put her in sinnoh to do super contests. cilan is ALL over the place, so we could put him wherever, and the idea of him just waltzing into the ramen shop from noodles roamin’ off seemed too perfect! max being a professor’s aide seemed realistic, and then when i came up with his connection to kukui i was STOKED at how believable it could be, etc...

then there were also set points we could hit that had already been laid! of course cacnea is still probably with gardenia (and we evolved it because we just figured that seemed like a thing the two of them would both agree on and alsoilovecacturnesorrynotsorrybye), and of course chimecho is still in saffron, and it’s not too wild to think that arbok and weezing and their colony were sequestered away somewhere in hoenn. since jessie loves her wobbuffet so much, it only seemed natural that benny would adore his lickitung. from that, natural plotlines and character arcs rose, like Jessie’s growing resentment that James seems to come into so many more reunions than her, that he seems to be handling everything so much better. when in reality the reader knows he’s really grappling with all he has left in his past and how much he’s left behind.

and then random ideas here and there. the oddish egg was a 3 am night shift work idea. ven and i are best friends and a huge fan of our own story so it’s not out of the question for one of us to just text the other at god knows what kinda hours like “WHAT IF INCINEROAR CARRIES DELIA OVER THE THRESHOLD OF THEIR HOUSE AND GIVES HER TOE BEAN MASSAGES” “JAMES SKYPES CACTURNE /EVERY SINGLE DAY/”

ok i went off there but yeah DTE’s basically been sitting in my head for 2 years and i just never had the courage to write it, so when i did, i had a lot planned! and what i didn’t, ven and i planned together.
