Mariel of Redwall was where Jacques definitely came into the subplot that was going to be a big part of most of his later books: searat politics.

#redwall #i love these subplots #theyre very dark and cynical #very game of thrones and all #where everyones just out for themselves and will stab anyone who gets in the way of their own interests #and probably other things but i mean this is a kids book so were gonna stop at the stabbing #but my absolute favorite part is that this cynical stabbing subplot is just that #a subplot #and at the end of the day everyone involved in them ends up dead or worse #and meanwhile these other characters #who were NOT part of this absurd cynical stab plot and in most cases werent even really aware of it #or were presumably aware of it but didnt care #get to have their happy ending #because its probably the most savage way there is to say #go ahead! be cynical! not me though #i especially love when someones presumably aware of the subplot but doesnt care #like in mariel of redwall or martin the warrior #like im sure mariel knew #probably more than she wanted to #about gabools ridiculous cynical stab plot #but did that bother her? no! #and martin was certainly aware of clogg and his general attitude toward badrang #even if he didnt know the details #but as far as he was concerned clogg was there to steal a boat off of #they dont care about the stupid politics! delightful
