Listed: Immaterial Possession
Tumblr media
Immaterial Possession puts the viscerality of bass-driven rock, the hypnotic drone of East European folk and the dippy energy of art punk into a blender lets it whirr.  The Athens, Georgia band—comprised of Cooper Holmes, Madeline Polites, John Spiegel and Elephant 6 scion Kiran Fernandes—met at an arts commune.  Their self-titled debut came out in 2020, and the follow-up, Mercy of the Crane Folk, this year. Reviewing it, Jennifer Kelly noted that, “If you’ve ever wondered what the B-52s might sound like on a serious Incredible String Band bender, well, possibly a lot like Mercy of the Crane Folk.”
Selda “Gitme”
youtube
Selda is the queen, a 1970s Turkish songwriter, political activist and cultural icon. This song has such great energy. You immediately blast off on the Turkish spaceship to the cosmic love song.. the desperation in Selda's powerful voice steers you.  (Madeline)
The Stranglers, “Hanging Around”
youtube
Love this track and whole record Rattus Norvegicus for its up-front, guttural driving bass lines and menacing vocals. The keyboard runs ascending into the air counter the low earthiness. The record cover is also a perfect fit for the music, classy yet dingy, calm but aggressive, mysterious but mundane. (Cooper)
Isaan style street music from Bangkok
youtube
Isaan music from Northeastern Thailand is some of the coolest music ever.. it's got the perfect blend of psychedelia, folk, improvisation, and party rhythm. And it's for all occasions. (Madeline)
The players are effortlessly cool too. Almost anything we find in this genre gets us going. (Cooper)
Bizunesh Bekele, “Debdabe Lakibign”
youtube
This video is one of my favorite tracks lately. I love the shuffle beat with the overdriven krar, a six-stringed harp, and the sweet synth licks mixed with the vocal. (Kiran Fernandes)
Hany Mehannah, “Shahr Al Assal”
youtube
Super groovy 1970s Egyptian music, scored for film. This is one of my faves from Hany Mehanna, a wonderful composer and keyboardist. His flourishing expressiveness of the Farfisa organ is a great influence on my organ playing in Immaterial. (Kiran)
The B52s, “Give Me Back My Man”
youtube
A big favorite from the B-52s catalogue. Cindy Wilson's vocals are so raw and glorious.. her swing from chill to scream is a cathartic explosion. And the beat and bass line is everlasting in electric spirit.  I listen to this one when I need a jump. It’s also a favorite karaoke number. (Madeline)
Buffy Sainte-Marie, “God Is Alive Magick Is Afoot”
youtube
A friend shared this with us after one of our shows. Buffy Sainte-Marie is a radical badass woman. It's “experimental” (as implied by a traditional pop sense) in the way that you are partaking in her hypnotic spell work. Just found out Leonard Cohen wrote the lyrics. That explains my gravitation to this one; Cohen is a favorite lyricist. (Madeline)
Barış Manço, “Dere Boyu Kavaklar”
youtube
Another groovy 1970s Turkish funk master. That mustache is its own instrument. I sit patiently, although in starving anticipation, for that delicious lead riff.. for that, we'll go to wherever he's luring us..(Madeline)
Aphrodites Child, “End of the World”
youtube
A 1968 Grecian epic banger. Appropriately, in the Greek mythological tradition, it's both deeply romantic and ominous in nature. Very incredible, shapeshifting vocals. Sometimes the visions of the werewolf come into my head with this one. Other times, it just feels like an apocalyptic fury of love. You could probably use this song as an easy Rorschach-ian test to see what's going on in your brain today. (Madeline)
The Bats, “Smoking Her Wings”
youtube
A friend put this on a mix tape. I love this sweet song! A driving tune with a perfectly soft and floating nostalgic melody. When I listen, I feel like I am falling in love in the summer of 1987 and want to cry over something yet I know not exactly what. (Madeline)
Velly Joonas, “Stopp, Seisku Aeg!”
youtube
A 1970s Estonian songwriter and artist. This funkadelic, melancholic, song has got a viola(?) line that cuts through like you're swimming up to the shimmering surface of the Baltic sea to take a breath. I love the rhythm in the vocal lines. I've listened to this song on repeat many times. Thank you Velly! (Madeline)

Heey!! I would love to hear your thoughts on Bolum 20 of Menajerimi Ara if you do watch it!
Take care xo
just watched the new MA episode and i honestly think this show has taken a VERY good turn for the better after the whole downhill slope after episode 9. this episode was so so so good i highly recommend watching🥺
Okay, so I watched it... here are my thoughts in no particular order.
Me when Mayda got angry at both Kıraç and Beren + her leaving Kıraç:
Tumblr media
But honestly, I understand that they depicted Mayda as almost an antagonist this entire season...
But I loved how she was allowed to feel rage and anger that both her husband and her daughter were hiding things from her. Especially when you take into consideration that she has asked Kıraç over and over again what his connection to Dicle is and he lied and lied and lied.
I will say, her reaction to him being: Why are you trying to destroy my family is so weird to me because... like? I don’t know, I feel like the more pressing issue is that he has lied to her for their entire relationship rather than him trying to ruin their family. But maybe that’s the messy subtitles.
Next to the Dicle and Kıraç situation:
I have mixed feels and this largely due to the fact that I am not Dicle (or Camille)... but I don’t think I would have been able to forgive my father if he abandoned me and kept on trying to hide his relationship with me.
No offence to Dicle and Camille, but I am different.
That being said, I really did think the father/daughter bonding moments were really sweet and I loved them... BUt... Them watching TV. Her making him food. Her tucking her in. All of it was really cute.
However, I hate it for two reasons. One it kinda puts Dicle into this position of caretaker, which was her character arc her entire relationship with Barış at the start. And I kinda hate that. I also don’t understand why Kıraç didn’t like help Dicle with her work so she wasn’t doing stuff for the agency + trying to find Beren.
Also, I had absolutely no sympathy for Kıraç. Like he made the decision to lie to his wife. That was a choice that he made, so him mopping around like “Oh my gosh, I lied to everyone I knew and now my life is over nonsense” just made me laugh... But what was funnier was the look of sadness and shock on his face when he read that Mayda was divorcing him. Like, dude, I know you work in the dizi sector, but you have been watching WAY too many dizis if you really think your wife isn’t going to leave you after all of that nonsense.
In the words of a Tumblr icon:
Tumblr media
Beren:
I absolutely hate the way that Beren is written. I understand that at the beginning they wanted her to be the antagonist to Dicle, but I really wish they would give her some character growth. Or, I really wish they would have her be friends and on somewhat of good terms with Dicle or someone else at the agency.
Having her constantly blaming her problems on Dicle and not growing up is ridiculous. Having her be upset when her mother called her out for lying to her was ridiculous. I don’t know how or why, but I really need her to have a better story arc beside constantly being bitter about Dicle... because that’s just not it chief.
I’m going to repeat myself... But in the words of a Tumblr icon:
Tumblr media
Feris (+ The New Agent Dude Whose Name I Don’t Know)
Okay, I totally understand why Feris got upset... and I am cool with it. As for the scenes where she forgives Dicle, that was cute... I will admit. I will say one of the things that I really love about MA in comparison to Dix Pour Cent, is the way that they developed the relationship between Feris and Dicle. So that’s fun.
As for Serkan... I don’t have many thoughts on him. He and Feris are cute, I will admit. I will also say that they have great chemistry and that is that. However, that being said they are totally hinting that Feris is [redacted] seeing that’s what happens to Andrea in Dix Pour Cent... my question is if [redacted] will come back like in Dix Pour Cent.
Jülide + Çınar + Emir
head empty no thoughts.
Emrah:
I loved watching Emrah and Güilin teaming up and having a mess around.
*insert a classic Cece and Winston mess around gif*
I also love how we are seeing *less* female characters being pit against each other. However, I am not excited to see Dicle being “attacked” by yet another character. It’s tiring.
Barış Havas, the love of my life.
Me whenever Barış does literally anything:
Tumblr media
Okay, though I am a self-proclaimed hater of MA. I still think that Ahsen and Deniz Can have INCREDIBLE chemistry. All of their scenes are so cute... I love how he is constantly trying to be around her and finds it so difficult to say goodbye to her and is constantly playing with her hair, and holding her hands, and touching his face.
Also, Dicle is so cute and giggly around him. It’s adorable! I cannot!
Like we get it, you’re in love with her, Barış... But also you aren’t special... Literally, everyone is in love with her, get in line.
But additionally... my only complaint about Barış Havas is this... WHO IS DRESSING HIM?
A green turtle neck? Really? A green one?
Give me slutty Barış Havas or give me death!
Tumblr media
And as always... the best characters this episode are:
Bro and Meral!
I will never forgive whoever wrote the stupid, the only person who I can be honest with is Emir line that Dicle tells Barış about Emir... because Meral has always been supportive and is always trying to help Dicle... It’s incredibly stupid and I hate it.
Tumblr media
I love how Bro is currently the Havas brother with the brain cells...
Tumblr media
Proud of him for taking care of those because Barış is certainly not using them!
Now when will these two bad bitches be in a scene again? Because I need them to stare into each other's eyes like love.

Note
i'll keep you updated on son yaz! based on today's fragman it already looks like things are coming hahah
i haven't watch dix pour cent but i've also been seeing the [redacted] stuff about feris and i also think they're going that way which is neat i think for feris lol. as for kıraç and beren, i kinda do feel sympathy for him bc yeah this is all his fault but i think he's experienced a lot of character development since the beginning and if he was like how he is now back then then i don't think he would've made the same mistakes. i also don't blame beren bc her entire life is toppling because of her father's mistake and she's (albeit childishly) refusing to blame her father but instead blaming the outsider who changed everything. i think dicle taking care of kıraç is also more just underscoring the entire storyline of dicle being caring no matter what it costs her and it's also more a sign of how their relationship has evolved from episode one.
i'm excited for the whole dicle being a manager thing bc it's definitely going to be super dramatic (although same i don't want dicle to be attacked again but honestly she deserves to be a manager and all emrah did was sabotage everyone else so) and bc technically there's no obstacle for her and barış to date now LMAO
speaking of, I WOULD DIE FOR BARIŞ HAVAS!!!! i'm OBSESSED with his obsession with her hair sgskdb also the fact that he's just there to support her through everything (character depth who? we don't know her) i love him being the loving boyfriend😭😭 and deniz can definitely looks very good in black and white turtlenecks but i loved the green (i would argue that deniz can looks good in everything especially every color turtleneck)
alsooo you have two MA anons now hahah i only sent one of those messages just fyi
I don’t know about the Feris situation. I feel like the story in Dix Pour Cent is so different and is so meaningful partially due to Andrea sexuality + the fact that the way that family is understood is so vague. But hopefully, they are able to give it some meaning and don’t settle for the vague and terrible aspects of Dizi tropes.
I have mixed feelings about Kıraç... Like I understand that he has grown since the start of the season and what not... But I think I am just really tired about how long they extended the secret about Dicle’s parentage... And I know this may seem weird, but I am genuinely on Team Mayda.
As for Beren... I don’t know, because I totally understand what you are saying. However, she is acting incredibly immature, selfish and ignorant of her mother’s feelings. Her mom’s life has literally been ruined by a secret that her step-dad has been keeping and she is still thinking about herself.
If you have read my blog post you might understand why I absolutely hate the fact that Beren (and the narrative) is forgiving to Kıraç for all of the lies. I understand that it is a response to such a scenario, but Beren has consistently been like this since the start of the show. Like, shit Bro had more of a character arc then she has... And its tiring because the actress is talented and they could be doing so much with her story.
It’s true, their relationship has developed and Dicle is such a caring person. I am just jaded... and I kinda stick to what I said. I wish we had seen Kıraç be more proactive in helping his daughters instead of just mopping around. For me, that would have shown more character development because he has repeatedly put himself/his work first and Dicle is always trying to reach out. However, I suppose we see Kıraç accepting Dicle’s help which shows his acceptance for her as his daughter.
Yeah, I agree. I’m excited to see Dicle being an agent and more DicBar. But on that comment about Emrah, this is one of the parts of MA that I am confused by. Each episode of the show is 2+ hours long. They literally do have the time and money to develop other characters (like Emrah or Beren) but they don’t... And it's so surprising because Dix Pour Cent is half that time with fewer episodes and we get more character development.
Deniz Can is so handsome. Agreed. But I have to agree to disagree with you about the turtle necks. It’s black turtle necks for me.
Wow... I feel like I am collecting MA anons. I shall dub thee MA Anon 1, and the other MA Anon 2.
