Would you continue the Addams Family au?
"Thena?" Gil whispered in his family's expansive home library. He didn't receive a reply, but he should have known he would lose her to his family collection.
He had shown her around the manor as soon as she and her father arrived. Their fathers went to talk business and he was entrusted with her. So, like normal, he had taken her hand and led her away from the business talk and to show her around their home.
The library was only the third stop on their tour, counting just looking out the windows of the grand hall, but she had laid her eyes on all the books they had and excitedly asked if they could explore it.
How could he say no to that?
She looked so cute and enthused and he rarely got to see that sparkle in her eye with both her parents breathing down her neck. He was happy to encourage her, even if it meant potentially never finding her again in the labyrinthine shelves.
"Thena," he whispered again, walking slowly in case she was crouched down behind a stack waiting to be re-shelved. "Are you still in here?"
"Gil?"
He poked his head around a corner and found several piles of books, all several tomes high but arranged very neatly in their respective stacks. He chuckled, "find some stuff you like."
Thena immediately turned contrite, and maybe a little flustered. She looked down at her piles from up on the ladder. "I-I'm sorry, perhaps I have let myself get carried away."
"Hey, don't let me stop you," Gil said gently as he came to the base of the ladder. He both held it steady and averted his eyes as she scurried down in her white dress. He chuckled down at the black and white floor tiles, "someone should read them--might as well be you."
Thena offered her thanks silently in her expression, which he was used to. But she looked down at the books she had pulled out for herself and even hugged the one she was holding to her chest. "I can't possibly take them with me. Even if you say so, Father would be mortified at the idea of me taking such liberties."
Gil made a face, rolling his eyes only while Thena wasn't looking at him. Her father was a real pain in the ass sometimes. "Hey."
"Hm," Thena blinked as he started picking up one of the stacks in his hands. "Gil?"
"Let's just make you a shelf of your own," he suggested, balancing the books in his hands as he walked somewhat blindly to where there were still a few empty shelves in the back corner. "Then you can save all the ones you want to read and borrow them a little at a time."
"Truly?" Thena inquired behind him. He heard a few covers thunking around and finally turned. Much to his relief, Thena had about a half a stack in her more delicate hands, hurrying to follow him.
"Yeah," he laughed at how baffled she was that he would let her borrow some books that were just collecting dust. "I don't spend much time in here, really. These shelves are actually mine. Ma thought it would encourage me or whatever."
Gil set the stack down on the floor first rather than try to angle and cram them all onto the shelf at once. For the most part, he wouldn't really care if they fell or got damaged, but if Thena wanted to take them home with her then he could at least treat them with a little respect.
"Thank you," she said quietly, keeping her eyes forward as she also shelved the books she had brought with her, even shuffling them around the ones he put up to alphabetize them in real time.
He smiled as the backs of their hands brushed, although Thena was quick to retreat from it. "Any time, Thena. You're welcome to anything and everything here."
"That is a generous," she laughed faintly, "and dare I say unrealistic invitation."
"Maybe," he sighed. As much as his wildest dreams could be of him gallantly suggesting they run away together from both their families' strict rules, it simply wasn't an option. "But so long as you're with me, I mean it."
"That's sweet."
With no more books in hand to shelf, Gil looked over at her. She clasped her hands in front of her again. It was natural for her to totally clam up, he was coming to learn the more time he spent with her. It was a shame, though--like a beautiful flower that could only bloom by itself.
Or something poetic like that.
"Father is excited to discuss their railway negotiations," she murmured, returning to the safer topic of their fathers' shared business interests. She returned to her piles, picking up a few more books for herself.
Gil sighed as he picked up another full stack. But he didn't expect her to suddenly be able to view her father in a new light after living directly under his thumb all her life. "Yeah, Pop is all giddy at the thought of your dad using it to ship his building stuff?"
"Indeed."
The two fell into silence again, only the sounds of the books on the shelves filling in the air between them. They hadn't struggled to speak much before now, but he was struggling to think of something just as much as she was.
He had tried flirting with her before. And while she hadn't gotten mad at him for it, he wasn't really sure if she wanted to go down that road again, either.
He looked over as Thena cleared her throat faintly. She was determinedly looking at each book spine as she arranged them. "Do you have a favourite?"
"Book?" he asked, and then immediately felt dumb with the weight of a particularly thick one right in his hand. He also looked at the shelf, feeling the back of his neck grow warm. "Uh, kind of. It's a little embarrassing, though."
"What could possibly be embarrassing about it?" Thena asked, her curiosity beating whatever tentativeness she had.
"Well," he sighed, knowing that as soon as she asked, she was going to get the honest answer anyway. He looked upward, feeling the back of his shirt and suit jacket against the heat in his skin. "I was a kid."
"My aunt wasn't really the type to play with me much, but whenever she visited, she would read me whatever story I wanted. I had adventure books about pirates and knights and stuff. But one that was her favourite was about this lonely woman."
"Oh?" Thena leaned closer.
"She lives outside of town, all alone, and everyone thinks she's a witch or some sad, old widow or something. But then one day, a man stumbles to her door. She opens it up and he's been travelling, but he's collapsed, on the verge of starving. So she takes him in and gives him a meal."
"When he asks why she helped him she says 'I don't know'. She keeps trying to get him to leave, but he's like, 'oh, my shoes are in ruin', so she fixes his shoes. Then he's like, 'oh, I have no food for the journey to the next town', so she bakes him biscuits to take with him. Then he's like, 'yknow, it's getting cold, sure could use a coat'. And she says, 'ugh, here's your stupid coat'."
Thena laughed along as he went through the summary of the old story.
"Then, finally, this guy is ready to get back on the road. He says goodbye to this woman he's been staying with for weeks now, and he asks if she wants to go with him. She says she can't. But he asks why not--she's just shown him that she can prepare everything she needs to make the trip. So what's holding her back?"
"And basically the woman realises that she's only staying there for the sake of it--because she's afraid to leave her home. But the man tells her just to come with him to the next town, just to see what it will be like. If she doesn't like it, then he'll walk her back to her home and be on his way."
Thena's expression shifted in real time as he continued. She toyed with the end of the tight blonde braid wound over her shoulder. "What a sad conclusion."
"Lucky it's not over, then," Gil grinned, causing her to laugh again. "She goes with him to the next town. It's a short trip, only a few days. And they see the sights, and she gets to experience nature and stuff, and blah-blah-blah-"
Thena nudged his arm affectionately, "don't skip the best parts! You told me in such great detail her making biscuits and sewing a coat!"
He laughed, enjoying fussing with her as if they were kids. "You've gotta read it for yourself!"
Her eyes changed as she stopped poking his arm and folded in on herself again. "Will you not tell me the ending, then?"
He could decline to, and just tell her to read the book for herself. But she also seemed like she really wanted to know. He put his hand on her shoulder as he moved away from the shelf that was now hers to one of his. "It has a happy ending, if you're worried about that."
"So you won't tell me," she half joked and half lamented. But she watched as he searched through the other books.
"Ah!" he pulled it from the shelf, careful with its delicate but well kept spine. He grasped it with both hands as he held it out for her, "it's a love story."
Thena accepted the book from him, letting their fingers brush together again. Her eyes looked down at the cover as her pale skin took on a little colour, "oh?"
"Yeah," he pulled away, returning to being sheepish about it. "It's kinda cheesy, I guess. But it really is a good book. And I think maybe you'll like it."
She pulled the book closer to herself, smiling at him shyly as her eyes darted between him and the pages. "Thank you, Gil."
Heat rose in his cheeks as well and he looked towards the entrance of the library, just to occupy his eyes. "Yeah, I mean no problem, keep it for as long as y-"
A foreign object, soft and warm, collided with his cheek as he was looking to the side. He looked forward again, just catching Thena leaning away and off of her toes and back onto the slight heel of her shoes.
He wasn't sure if his heart was pounding like a hummingbird's wings or if it had stopped completely. But he just stared at her.
She arranged her braid around the book she was holding more preciously than Theseus. But her smile was almost like a little bit of a smirk, and it suited her. "I shall let you know when I've learned of this ending you're keeping so secret."
Gil immediately thought of the story events, and his aunt's favourite section. He could remember the tears in her eyes as she would read the part of the man desperately confessing his love and learning that the woman wanted to see the world with him instead of going back to her little home all alone. He could remember her voice cracking when she read how the man asked the lonely woman to marry him.
But that would be crazy to think about in relation to a girl he had only met a few months ago, he told himself (very firmly).
He grinned, drawn to her as she bounded back to her other piles of books, still waiting to be shelved in their little home here in his family house. "Hey, I can't spoil it. You have to experience it for yourself."
"I think you're just a tease," she stated with a faint purse in her lips.
Maybe he was, but he just couldn't resist when it came to her.

Sup, which Emma do you like more?
I haven't played in a while and don't really remember which were the most competent / intelligent ones
Oh my god you just game me an essay topic. I'm gonna go off. It's probably a little unfair since I haven't finished Leon's route yet, I don't remember sariel's very well, and I am not up to date on everyone's event lore, since I know even if there's something she's lacking in a route, every Emma has the same capacity to impove and learn because she's always diligent on her studies. It is unfair that I'm gonna reference some event but not others. I also already know I'm gonna have a gilbert tangent since I thought about this on the sub and yeah that's where ill end up. I'm also gonna throw some shade at chev and silvio cuz. I that's just how i am.
NOTE: there's not a single emma that I can bring myself to call actually just stupid since intelligence is more like a subjective spectrum and something that cannot be quantified exactly. (Kinda like how someone can be dyslexic or illiterate but still be very intelligent. Just not in the way our stupid and elitist school systems makes us think being intelligent means)
It depends on how they play on her estabilished traits and a little bit on what she learns in the palace and from her suitor.
The things I would say are consistent is that she is VERY intuitive (we could call it the bunny senses lol) good at reading people, emotionally intelligent...compassionate...that general idea. The other is that she is good at talk no jutsu but that manifests in different ways depending on route. Either through negotiation skills (Chev, Sariel) or just straight up being a therapist (Licht, Luke)
It all starts in the prologue, with the event convinces sariel to choose her as belle. She essentially has two reactions: The slap and the formal apology she gives chev. Depending on the route, they lean into either one or the other. In Chev's, it's remarked how one can hardly believe she's the same woman who slapped and yelled at that drunkard, because she generally carries herself more composed and... Dignified. She is better at keeping a level head and also good at negotiation and debate. In Sariel's it's similar. In Silvio's route you get the emma who's first instinct is to slap a guy for saying something stupid. This works for silvio because he hates fake people and it makes him relate better to her cuz he also never got the hang of that whole speaking politely even to someone you hate thing. This change is a lil dependant on which suitor she's interacting with.
Back on her intuition again, this is something that can feel like a plot hole or just bad writing if they don't execute it well. Like how in chev's route that scene in the ball where she sees him basically accidentally drive away that father and daughter that tried to talk to him and she just gets this feeling of urgency that she wasn't able to put into words. This happens again after she saw him on the battlefield and she became afraid of him but still didn't want to just give up on him. It is explicitly stated that even as belle, she does not have to get involved with him any further but she still doesn't have a coherent thought on why that is??? At least not till, I think it was when she realised she was in love... And like. I'd like to believe the game doesn't wanna hold my hand about it like?? If a person who'd fall in love with chev would have to be insightful and good at reading between the lines, WHY DIDN'T they write that??? I know making her someone who follows her heart is a good contrast to chev, who is very logic driven, and makes it to where they cover each other's weaknesses, but christ was it frustrating to read back. WHY couldn't you make made her more articulate?????
The beginning route emmas are generally more... Simple, to borrow chev's words. Like how in Yves's she straight up forgets about clause 99 and makes Yves the king without even thinking about how she'd be supposed to never see him again and they just immediately annule it. Which is funny cuz in other routes she REALLY Angsts about that.
Unsurprisingly, the strongest use of emma's intuition and talk no jutsu is in Clavis's route. When she was convincing chev to save clavis... Which is something she didn't even HAVE to tell him, he was testing her and preparing her for when she'll have to testify and convince the foreign princes. She had to talk to GILBERT alone. She smelled the danger on him instantly. And she survived that talk. Amazing. Altho she's one of my favorite and one of the most "she just like me fr" versiona of emma, I was still... A lil bit ahead of the plot than her. Mostly because long before the route was even out I said about clavis's thing "to want to be remembered is to want to be loved" which is literally just something he told her later when the route was, just inverted. This is literally the only reason why chev couldn't chase me out the palace. If I can read his little brother that quickly I must not be completely innept afterall. Now I know i say "characters saying exactly what i would say is always a win" and I am aware that's a VERY subjective measure for a good story, but it's usually good indicator of the story being aware of where the audience would be and also the kind of person that would actually like the suitor we're supposed to be romancing.
Now, an example of something that normally you would call stupid but they make it make sense would be sariel's route where she insists on uh... Going on missions around the kingdom with him. We all know she doesn't REALLY need to do that for belle duties, she doesn't do it in other routes and it cuz it's not REALLY for her belle duties. She WANTS to get to know sariel better and be there at his side, maybe be there to look after him if he's in danger. She finds the argument that will her get what she wants and takes measure to make sure she doesn't hinder him needlessly. This emma is good at getting what she wants! We all like an active emma! The rom end is her forging her own plan to save sariel and putting the talk no jutsu in action!! She does something like that in Jin's too. She makes the plan to save him only upon learning that he was about to get himself executed! She was quick on her feet! She went out there to stall for time! She recognized that clavis would never let him die like that and incorporated that into the plan!!! I still remember that event where she recognized he went out while she was passed out cuz his hands were cold and he was impressed like "i didn't think about thay" when jin's route was the latest one out she was the smartest emma around hands down!
Now with rio's emma, pre-route, I used to worry that she's one of the blissfully unaware ones, since they were giving us events where rio gets something done behind the scenes to help her and then he chokes and doesn't tell her the truth of what he did but later evemts corrected that. And you see it in jis route too. She IS good at reading rio and she hates when he "sacrifices his life for her" and she calls hin out on it. The fact it's not a sacrifice and that she has a problem of not asking for help even when she should is a different suitcase to unpack. She fucked up when she expected just talking to get things resolved and it got rio stabbed but that did affect her greatly and you can see in his later events how she's grown foresight and thinks ahead about things even rio doesn't (she asks rio's mom to mentor her) . Rio literally sets the floor for her with a scheme to get her to show some nobles that didn't approve of their relationship her value and she shows off her talk no jutsu. They really make a good team.
Like I already said, Licht and Luke's MCs kinda end up doing therapy work. Granted the climax of Luke's route is more intense. In licht's route she is patient, she tries to understand how he thinks first, she takes A LOT of time to think about what to say to him to pull him out of his darkness. I could say Luke's MC gets her intuitive insight nerfed but it's LUKE. He had me fooled. He had EVERYONE fooled. Literally nobody expects the matryoshka doll of trauma that is luke. Oh and I remember his proposal event in which it's clear that she's been doing a great job adjusting to playing like a noble lady so the nasty people that don't approve of their relationship now that luke is actually acting like a prince, literally can't find an actual to pick with her other than that she's a commoner (luke explicitly states this to cheer her up). And we ALL know luke only shaped up to his true potential for her.
Silvio's route is... *looks for a nice way to say it* it doesn't give her... As much opportunities to shine... She's still insightful, in how she sees right through silvio and how sad his life is, but the thing they do with her intuition, compassion, empathy is that silvio does and says a lot of terrible shit to her but she just gets this feeling that deep down he's hurting too (that's a scene in the rom ending) and like?????? Emma is never wrong to trust her suitor, we all know it's an otome game, but this *gestures vaguely to the whole route* just feels like cybird forgot how to write a real woman. Like no. That's not how I act around a shitty jerk that bullied me. Especially not if sariel is gonna give me the go ahead to act like a "wicked noblewoman" to drive him away. Granted, emma is so altruistic the meanest thing she can think of is pretend to be drunk and ask for piggie back ride.... I guess I'm not that nice, but before you call me cruel, I am not even talking about the mean shit i could say about silvio. I'm talking about the very simple and real fact that when women hate men, we just wanna get away from them is all.
That is NOT how im gonna act after a guy asked me to be his escort so he wont reveal my secret identity!!?!??! I'm gonna be weary, on my guard and very "don't you FUCKING touch me" like. Yeah, eww stuff like this has happened in other routes but say, in noktos, they get that shit outta the way in CHAPTER ONE. He says something to get under her skin. Tricks her into coming to a party with him. She gets drunk and cuddly. He gets her to his room. They do NOT sleep together cuz nokto explicitly says that would not be enjoyable. They get that out the way quickly. She's mad furious about him for a looong time afterwards. It's all understandable. He later admits he did that to get her to keep her guard up so someone with actually terrible won't take advantage of her. "Did her a favour" i know it's a trope. If it was on a to do list for suitors, silvio fucking failed this one.
Cuz after all, he doesn't really act like someone who's trying to get her to slip and reveal her as belle (he did go for that seriously in clavis' route) and you know what that does?? Get her to lower her guard!
That is something that gil (mwuah he saying what I'm thinking. Mwuah. I would say we share a brain cell but he obviously has a multitude of brilliant braincells he uses for evil) doesn't just take cruel advantage of, he warns her!! He doesn't just send silvio out to save her, he gives this vague warning not to watch out only for silvio and let her guard down around others. Altho he had to be seen whispering to her in the kitchen to raise suspicion, he didn't HAVE to do that!! But he's like 10 steps ahead in the 5D chess and she's just normal so she never picks up on it even after she gets that she fell in his trap. He took steps to make sure she didn't die or something, cuz yeah he needed her alive for the long plan and he only meant to threaten silvio a lil but still!!!! When they're in the carriage after that, she points out how silvio's been letting her get away with everything, i am pretty sure she was being that that was the reason ahe ended up in that situation , wich by the way,
I KNOW the point is supposed to be that it's keith and that interrogation felt like coming outta nowherw but. I can't help but feel like different emma's would have handled that better. I feel like say, gil's emma woulda done better than just panic. She's good at thinking quick on her feet. You have to be cuz that man throws you curveballs only. She's already good at it, and being around him trains her even more. Like the fake lovers event. It's... Funny to think maybe she can get good at lying. Since gil hates lies. But that's essential what she did there where she had to find an excuse to act in front of a whole audience of nobles, without revealing either her true identity or use the name of the family that sariel found for her to use, since that could even get them killed.
Coming back to silvio's route, that rescue was the moment she knew for sure silvio wasn't really dangerous and actually looked out for her. That was the begging of things not going as shitty as they were before. Or was supposed to be except that then she goes and gets drunk and passes out in silvio's room after we JUST had a talk about not letting your guard down. God that pissed me off to an irredeemable point. But after that they hang out nicely and cuz she wants to not cuz she's forced.
AND THAT WAS ALL PART OF THE PLAN. Gil wingmaned this couple as much as rio did and he'll never get any thanks for it!! Like yeah the 5D chess involved getting silvio on the throne and getting better tariff deals for obsidian and what not but it also involed. Getting them together. (Insert deleted scene of gil playing with the chess set in chev's room and he's making the pieces that are silvio and emma kiss) ughhhhh i wanna kiss him so badly (gil ofc)
I don't really wanna go on a rant about just silvio's route but it's like the more I think about it the worse it gets? Emma kinda just gets taken for a ride. There are other routes instances where she gets pushed around or needs rescue but... (Points to her for getting out of that kidnapper's cell before the boys even came to rescue her and thinking quick and throwing that vase) in the dramatic he rescues her from that interrogation, and then he makes his plan to take the throne and she's basically there for moral support... And then in the romantic ending (in which silvio is much worse cuz he tries to commit to the villain bit but then backs out and does a self sacrificing move) the "you're my fiancee now so shut up asshole" plan was rio's idea...... She's just.... Done better than this...
Huh i know literally nothing about keith or his emma and his route is up next. I know she has to be observant in order to tell the two keiths apart. That ought to be interesting. Wait. Does dating keith count as polyamory since you technically date two of him??

This Year
"Gil?"
"Oh," he looked up from sweeping the floor of the shop, still wearing his suit and everything. He sniffled and swiped at his nose, "h-hey."
Thena came into the shop, letting the door drift closed behind her. She also still had on the dress she had worn to the school formal, with her white coat unbuttoned over it. "We turned around and you were gone. What happened?"
"Uh," he tried to turn around, pretending to sweep more thoroughly. He hunched around the stick of the handle, "well...remember how I was gonna ask that girl?"
"I recall."
Thena didn't really like her, but when he had asked her if he should ask, she had given him her support anyway. Thena was a good friend, like that. All their friends were.
"Well," Gil sighed, finally setting down the broom and toying with the tie that was loosened but still hanging around his neck. He must have looked so stupid, "she never showed."
"She stood you up?"
"Wait!" he rushed out, knowing that if Thena got out the shop door, she was going to run to that girl's house and throttle her with her bare hands. "I-I mean, I dunno, maybe she had something come up. Maybe...maybe she had something more important to do."
Thena walked closer to him by the front counter. She crossed her arms at him, "nothing should be more important, if she's the right person."
Gil sighed again, not done with his pity party. He still had the stupid flower he was going to give her, too. "Guess she wasn't."
Thena softened, losing the hard edges to her severe expression. Everyone always said Thena was so scary looking, and maybe he could see it if she was pissed off. But he never thought of Thena like that; she was actually really sweet and considerate.
"Then she's not worth your tears."
He sniffled again, but Thena reached up and brushed some off his cheek for him. It wasn't like he had any reason to act like a tough guy around Thena, anyway. After spending all their lives together, it wasn't like she didn't know he cried at sappy movies and videos of puppies walking for the first time.
"And if I ever see her-"
"Hey," he chuckled, grasping her hands in his before she could start naming the litany of things she would do to his failed date. "Look, it doesn't matter, okay?"
She still had a face that made it seem like it very much did.
"I mean," he shrugged, "just 'cause she talks to me in math doesn't mean she wanted to go out with me. Guess I could have thought of that before asking her, but whatever."
"Gil," Thena started and then paused. She liked to choose her words carefully. She looked at him, tilting her head because after hitting middle school he was finally taller than her. "You don't need her."
He chuckled, "thanks."
"I'm not just saying that as your friend," Thena continued. It was more words than he was used to, from her. "You are kind, and sweet, and as far as I'm concerned you are the only boy I have ever known to have any sense."
He snorted, "c'mon, what about Kingo?--or Druig? Or your own brother?"
"Certainly not," she rolled her eyes before paving over his interruption. "You are the best person I know and...and I would hate to think that you wouldn't believe me."
He did feel like the best, when she put it that way. He sighed, just staring at her under the hum of the fluorescent lights of the shop. He always thought they were kinda depressing, like in apocalypse movies, giving a weird tint to people's skin at night.
But Thena always looked so beautiful.
Thena raised on her toes, in the low heels she was wearing to match her dress. For having said that she was only going because their mother said that she had to if Ikaris went - which was a very Ajak thing to say - she certainly hadn't been lazy about her outfit.
Gil closed his eyes, smelling her perfume as she pressed her lips to his. He forgot about the broom, his arms looping around her back as she slid hers around his neck. He had never kissed a girl. He had - secretly - been hoping that tonight would be his opportunity.
This was far, far better than he could have expected.
Thena pulled away, her eyes darting around, looking at him and wondering what he was thinking. She must've let Sersi and Makkari do her makeup because her eyelashes looked darker and longer than usual. "Gil?"
He blinked, still just staring at her. He felt like he was king of the world, though! Man, kissing was way better than everyone made it seem. He had thought surely it had been overhyped, but no, definitely not.
"Gil!"
The rest of their friends also piled into the shop, also looking haphazard with ruffled hair and half buttoned coats. Sersi came charging in first, her hair bouncing around her. Ikaris slid in right behind her, looking the most frustrated. Makkari and Druig followed in after.
"Are you okay?" Sersi asked, "last I checked you were waiting for your date. Next time I go for some punch no one has seen you and Thena's gone too."
"Uh," Gil blinked, as if time had paused and now he was no longer holding - and kissing - Thena, but now Sersi was talking to him and Thena had slid three feet away. "Y-Yeah."
"Yeah?" Ikaris repeated, obviously not the one most enthused to have left the party. He looked over at his sister, though. Despite the rule that if Ikaris went, she had to go, Ikaris was still her brother (annoying and somewhat overprotective). "What?"
"What?" she asked back, even more defensively.
"What's wrong?" he asked more directly, walking closer to her as if he could smell someone expressing interest in her.
"Gil, are you okay?" Sersi asked him much more sweetly (what she saw in Ikaris, none of them would ever know).
"I'm okay," he smiled, nodding at her. The sting that had him dragging his feet all the way home and in here had faded. It almost felt totally healed, actually. "I, uh, got stood up."
"What?!"
That bitch. Makkari shook her head, although Druig was clearly in agreement with her, even if he was too much of an old soul to ever call a girl a bitch.
"Look, it's okay guys, really," Gil again tried to dissuade his much more bloodthirsty friends (Thena, Druig and Kari). "I think it might have been a misunderstanding, actually."
"You're making excuses for her," Thena pursed her lips. Although, given what just happened, maybe her distaste of his date wasn't just disapproval. He raised his eyebrows at her and she rushed to look away from him.
"I drive you all and no one can close a single car door?" Kingo huffed at them as he finally joined their little pity-party. He looked at Gil over everyone else's heads, "you good, big guy?"
Gil snuck another look at Thena, who blushed faintly. He chuckled, "yeah, I'm a lot better, now."
"Good," Kingo let it suffice. He had his moments of deep emotional understanding, always peppered in between his usual need for attention. "So, what's the plan?"
Everyone looked at everyone else, standing around in Gil's uncle's shop attached to their home.
"Uh, hey!" Gil smiled, finally tugging his tie off completely. "Gramps only ran out to get some pizza and stuff. I was just gonna lock this place up anyway. You guys can come in and...hang out, if you want."
"Party at Gil's!"
He smiled, relieved that he hadn't spoiled the night for anyone. Makkari and Druig happily linked hands and went to the fridges to pick out drinks for everyone. And he knew they would have no problem ditching the formal dance, dates or not.
Ikaris gave his sister another glare, but they were equally stubborn, so there was no way he was going to get any answers from her here and now. He let Sersi drag him away by the arm to pick out sweets.
Sersi did lean back to whisper to Thena, "I assume you went through with it."
Thena swatted her away, as well as Kingo, who gave her a look that seemed between Sersi and Ikaris' levels of knowledge. She ducked her head.
Gil swayed in her direction as their friends helped themselves to the family shop. He felt pretty confident for a guy who had been stood up on his first official date a mere hour earlier.
"You didn't have to invite us to stay," she advised him, also swaying in her hesitation to choose a direction.
He shrugged, pulling just one hand out of his suit pants pocket. "Hey, we should have some fun tonight, right?"
Maybe surprised by his optimism, she smiled. "I suppose you're right."
"Uh," he started and looked around, losing some of that confidence again. Thena just looked so pretty, it was hard to think straight. "I-I guess this is kinda lame, but..."
She stared as he pulled out the flower he had gotten from behind the front counter. "You got her a rose?"
"Well, I wanted to get something," he shrugged, snapping off the long stem like it was nothing. He chuckled, "i actually picked the white one because...it reminded me of you."
Thena let him slip the budding rose into the bun binding her hair together. She stared up at him.
"Sorry," he blushed, slipping his hands into his pockets again. "I'll pick you something more special, next time."
She smiled, visibly resisting the urge to touch it now that it was settled in her hair. She looked towards their friends, already heading towards the back door that would lead through his garage and to the house. She tugged at his sleeve faintly, "it'll be perfect."
