Striped buddies by Foto Martien The plains zebra (Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchellii), also known as the common zebra or Burchell's zebra, or locally as the "quagga", is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra. There are six subspecies. The plains zebra's range is fragmented from the south of Ethiopia through East Africa to as far south as Botswana and eastern South Africa. Its habitat is generally but not exclusively treeless grasslands and savanna woodlands, both tropical and temperate. They generally avoid desert, dense rainforest and permanent wetlands, and rarely stray more than 30 kilometres from a water source. The plains zebra is mid-sized, smaller on average than the other zebra species, and thick bodied with relatively short legs. There is some variation in size, based on the animals' condition and subspecies. Adults of both sexes can stand from 1.27 to 1.45 m high at the withers (shoulder), are 2.17 to 2.46 m long, not counting a 47 to 57 cm tail, and weigh 175 to 385 kg. Like all zebras, they are boldly striped in black and white, and no two individuals look exactly alike. They also have black or dark muzzles. Males may weigh 10% more than females. Er zijn 6 ondersoorten. Vroeger kwam hij voor in bijna alle grasvlakten in zuidelijk en oostelijk Afrika; van Zuid-Ethiopië tot Angola en oostelijk Zuid-Afrika. Twee miljoen jaar geleden kwam hij zelfs verder noordwaarts tot in Algerije voor. Tegenwoordig is zijn leefgebied meer versnipperd, en is hij op enkele plaatsen uitgestorven. De steppezebra leeft op de open graslanden, savannes, steppen en bossavannes, zowel op vlakten als in heuvelachtige streken en in bergen. In het droge seizoen voegen meerdere kudden zich bij elkaar tot grotere kudden van soms meer dan duizend dieren en trekken ze naar vochtigere gebieden. Vaak sluiten ze aan bij kudden andere hoefdieren, als blauwe gnoe en Thomsongazelle. De steppezebra is een middelgroot, gespierd paard met grote oren. De benen zijn relatief kort en stevig. Het strepenpatroon verschilt per ondersoort, gebied en individu. Bij alle dieren lopen brede, zwarte strepen verticaal over het lichaam. Op de hoeven en de romp lopen horizontale zwarte strepen. Ook het gezicht en de stijve manen zijn gestreept. Volwassen dieren hebben een kop-romplengte van 217 tot 246 cm lang en een schofthoogte van 127 tot 145 cm. De staart is 47 tot 57 cm lang. Mannetjes zijn groter dan vrouwtjes. Vrouwtjes worden 175 tot 250 kg zwaar, mannetjes 220 tot 322 kg zwaar.
