Finally color can be applied. The “neo-pastel” palette (as I’ve coined it) has been part of a slow refinement over a long period of time. Piece to piece it subtly changes, but the core collection remains a foundation. As a quick check, I like to explode all the little puzzle pieces apart every so often to check for mistakes. Now we get into more delicate hand work... With a baseline set of 2D vector curves to start from, the next step is refining these contours into appealing and practical line work. The points you see indicate intersections. Since ultimately, we want to form a series of unique shapes from the lines, it’s important to see (and control) exactly where each line starts and ends. While sometimes painstaking, this step is a labor of love to editorialize the overall form that the final work will take. Once I finish researching all I can about a subject, I transition towards making a 3D CAD model with as much detail as I can commit to memory. This exercise let’s me slow down and appreciate what the original designers accomplished, while also imparting my own take on it as well. I thought it would be cool to take you through my process of creating an illustration, from start to finish. We kick off with research. Before I commit the energy towards making a dynamic end product, it’s got to be something I can nerd out about or enjoy learning about for a while. After all, one of the key reasons I engage artistically is to better understand something. To make an illustration of a concert trumpet for instance, I want to learn about the structures, physics and functions of how the instrument works and how it’s made.
