Old Nation DDH M-43 & Wolverine State Trendy, Popular, Awesome - Made a quick trip to Grand Rapids for a concert and to take in the impressive beer scene.  HopCat seemed like the logical place to start.  Instantly understand why it’s one of the top rated beer bars in the country.  Great atmosphere, huge taplist, very good food, all topped off with some really awesome happy hour specials.

In my Michigan beer research M-43 seemed to be all the rage and since we were mostly doing breweries / brewpubs this seemed likely to be my only option to tried it.  I was really impressed and if we weren’t in it for the ticks would have happily had another glass. 

For the next beer up I was mainly looking for something Michigan brewed that wasn’t huge so a hoppy lager hit the spot. Thanks Wolverine State. 

We decided to go with the somewhat aggressive challenge of finishing the 8 stop brewsader tour in our ~36 hour visit, but you gotta do what you gotta do to get a free T-Shirt.

Denver Pop Culture Con Beer Release Party!

This years Denver Pop Culture Con (formally Denver Comic Con) beer release party is this weekend! The bear this year is called “Bock Machina” and is based on Breckenridge Brewery’s Maibock recipe that won a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. Per the press release:

The party is challenged with concocting a malty lager that casts a joyful spell on all whom taste it. Maibock  is a refreshing golden liquid which tastes of honey and grain and smells of sweet fruit.

This years event will be held at the Monkey Barrel on Saturday, May 25th at 7:00 PM. The first 200 people to the free event will get a free glass with the beer’s logo. There will also be a Cosplay Contest where winners get tickets to Denver Pop Culture Con and an LED Dance Floor. Not that I plan on dancing, no one wants to see that. But you are probably great at it so you should come on down this weekend and enjoy yourself!

Bock Machina is named after the gaming group Vox Machina from “Critical Role” and joins the hefty list of previous PCC/DCC beers:

New Holland Cellarman’s IPA, Didn’t Do the Math, Tangerine Space Machine and Quad-Hopter - To finish out our Grand Rapids Brewsader challenge we hit up the New Holland Knickerbocker. Another no brainer with it being literally across the street from Jolly Pumpkin.

Went with a sampler again - this time all IPAs with 3 of the 4 being NEIPAs.  The Quad-Hopter was too over the top. The 3 NEIPAs were all decent - nothing I would buy to drink at home, but good for a taproom environment.

The facility was maybe the most impressive from the whole trip. Huge bar well staffed with bartenders. Lots of high tops and other tables in the bar area for those who want to spread out. Lots of table service space too. Large gift shop with take away beer options. Seemed to be a 2nd floor as well although not sure exactly what was up there. 

This made it 8 of 8 for our Brewsader passport, but it was too late in the day for us to pick up the t-shirts in person, but it’s really awesome they offer a no cost shipping option as well.
