A combined creation of an artist, an explorer, nature and the war. Artist Frederic Edwin Church and Dr. Isaac Israel Hayes, an arctic explorer took interest in each other's profession. Church provided lessons to the explorer before his journey for the far north so that he might return with some drawings from his journey. In the landscape, depicting a frame during the winter and early spring of 1864 to 1865, an explorer's ship frozen in ice under a arctic sky filled with aurora borealis and flickering lights from the war. Lights inside the small ship and a tiny dogsled racing towards the ship confirms human presence. The flickering red colored wave of light through the consistent aurora lights and breathtaking nature created a celestial environment. "Negro Life at the South", 1859 by Eastman Johnson. Oil on linen. On the eye of Civil War, with Negro Life at the South, Eastman Johnson has depicted a referendum on the definition of race. Painted open-ended yet pointed questions about what constitutes the definition of race. Observe deeply what and how everyone is doing in this painting. Starting from the (1)fence between the two houses both visually divides and purposefully connects; to the (2)light blue fabric descends from the window that depicts a way in and out without using the front door. (3)A white colored cat slinking into the bedrooms of slave quarters. (4)The mixture of white and brown spots on the dog. (5)Darker skinned woman of the chimney holding much lighter skinned baby. (6)Young mulatto couple in the lower left corner. (7)Somber banjo player and the (8)small boy with the broken pull toy.
