This was Graw Ragehammer. Once a loyal, dedicated and precious member of Commander Nastazya's Rage Warband who graduated fahrar with her.
Tumblr media
He went MIA in 1320 AE, last seen fighting an army of new Branded while what was left of his warband could escape back to camp. They'd already lost two of seven, and he was the third. ... Or so everyone thought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An unnaturally strong willpower, he tries what he can to prevent himself falling under Kralkatorrik's control, but even he's not stronger than a dragon and half of his body becomes crystallised.
His fur loses its lustre, his once bright orange eyes a crystalline purple. He refuses to let the dragon win, despite being a shell of his former self. But no branded nor charr would ever accept a monster with this form, he spends his days fighting and hiding. Striking down Kralkatorrik's minions wherever he can, and avoiding being in the firing line of the legions. As much of a curse this crystal body of his is, it nourishes him, lets him survive.
But...
Perhaps one day, many years after, he'll receive some semblance of relief. He'll always be half crystal, there's no changing that. (Early Icebrood Saga)
Tumblr media
But at least he could have a pure crystal that's no longer trying to make him succumb to its control.

legit every single problem the charr have with Branded could have been avoided if Logan had stayed.
ofc Rytlock hates Logan's guts. half his headaches wouldn't even have turned up if the guy hadn't run off in the name of love.
flaming Branded won't let him forget about Logan-flaming-Thackeray, of COURSE Rytlock is so upset all the time.

"Eventually... Eventually I'll get around to making Incinerator for him," I say, looking at his 8% map completion. I look at my scrapper's fifty-some percent. "Eventually."

The re-release of Living World S1 finally convinced me to explore parts of GW2 Ascalon beyond the Fields of Ruin, despite the nowhere-addressed weirdness of being railroaded into fighting the ghosts of my people (among many other things!!). So my Althea, named after the Ascalonian mesmer teacher who got murdered by the Charr in GW1, finally stumbled into “Camp Althea,” which is of course a camp for the Separatists.
It’s not at all improbable that the Separatists would exploit original Althea’s tragedy that way, but it does seem ... extremely on-brand for how GW2 handles the events of Prophecies that the game would vaguely address what happened by linking it to the Separatists, i.e., villainous hordes of terrorists who just can’t accept their people’s conquest gracefully and attack anything that moves.
/sigh

Wanted to try a charr in the same style as my latest experiments before opening possible commissions for these. I went with my brand new charr Arminus Copperhorn who I created about 2 days ago.

i know they discontinued individual legendary weapon narrative collections because it's too much effort for content that most players won't even experience, & redirected that effort into more generally accessible weapon collection questlines, like caladbolgs restoration. i totally get that, but i kind of wish the aurene legendaries could have some kind of narrative collection to them, at least the first time you craft one, since they all follow the same theme anyway & so youd only have to make one and theres a much broader chance of players experiencing it. one of the rough ideas i was kicking around was a crystal bloom that accidentally got caught in one of aurene's branding blasts, to aurene's horror, & this young charr (ex-iron legion blacksmith) is not good with words and verbalized poetic sentiments so she asks you to help make a weapon instead that will demonstrate to aurene that she understands both the deadly responsibility of wielding aurene's magic but also the potential to do good with it.

So something that's always kinda perplexed me the question of just how sentient the branded are. Now dragon minions having a wide range of mental activity is nothing new, but they're usually within the same ballpark of each other. So for example all the risen can at least sputter out a few words and all the destroyers are equally mindless.
But the branded?
Well most branded seem as mindless as the destroyers, crystalline horrors that do naught but attack anyone foolish enough to wander into their line of sight. But there are a few notable exceptions that seem to suggest at least some branded are capable of free thought and even full on speech!
The most obvious example would be Glint, pre-purification, but she was a dragon champion and Kralk's daughter so her being an exception makes sense. But there are more examples! And these, near as I can tell, don't have any excuse for being as talkative as they are.
This rando charr in the iron marches has a whole damn speech during his event
Tumblr media
Hierarch Chikere (remember him?) starts shit talking the commander the instant he comes back from his branding.
Tumblr media
And Josso Essher seems as invested in protecting Augury Rock as he is in serving Kralkatorrik.
Tumblr media
And there are even more examples out there. Some of them would make sense for being more powerful minions, but look me in the eyes and tell me Chikere was powerful enough to be capable of speech once he got branded.
I dunno what allows a branded to talk but my best guess is some intersection of pre-branding force of personality and the random chance of which parts of their body get crystallized.

Tyria, Grothmar Valley, 1332 AE. Season of the Scion is entering its seventh decade. The Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik is dead, its branded minions scattered and slowly dying out. The Flame Legion is about to shake off its past and rejoin the other High Legions. In what feels almost like overnight, the charr are free of two major threats that were keeping their forces occupied for years.
To celebrate both of these occasions, Blood Legion imperator Bangar Ruinbringer invited any and all to Grothmar Valley. Imperators and tribunes, centurions and legionnaires, soldiers and gladia, charr and other races alike are to come to the home of the Bloods for an All-Legion Rally, to witness the rebirth of charr as one, unified force.
Some see it as an obvious political power play – a chance for Bangar to establish dominance over the other imperators and shift power in Blood's favor. Others consider it a chance to mingle and celebrate, safe in the knowledge they can breathe just a little bit easier from now on.
And for certain charr, it is a time ripe with opportunity.
For all of them, life changes in less than a fortnight...
[This story is set shortly before and during the episode Prologue: Bound by Blood].

Note, please, that this is an episodic project, but due to the nature of tumblr being... well, generally unsuited for such endeavors, I have no way to link the episodes together. I will tag any works related as "#Icebrood Saga: Frostbound", but since there will also be related brief non-comic interludes, it may be difficult to get to these in the correct order. When in doubt, see page numbers, those do not reset with chapters.
For best results on anything related to this project, [search here].
This comic is unofficial and not part of the game's canon.
In case you have any doubts about it, I love Icebrood Saga. I don't love it uncritically, I don't consider it perfect, it was obviously cut short due to an abrupt shift of development in favor of the expansion, but even with all that said, it remains my favorite part of Tyria's story.
This series is my loveletter to that story. It will be a long ride, so... strap in, cubs. The Blade Warband has a long way to go.

3, 5, and 13 for Sig!
3. Are they an outsider? Do they feel like one?
In his youth? Absolutely. Sigmund's sire, Oberon, showing up to the fahrar one day to spare him and a few other unfortunately ill cubs from a so-called culling surely made him the talk of the town. He grew up weak and frail in a farm tending to the land and experimenting with his tech; Sigmund's mind was quite the intellectual one, but it was one that had no experience with other charr, and it was quite the shock when he was recruited back into Iron.
Sig wouldn't feel like an outsider for much longer past base-game with the help of his warband, especially when he found himself branded under the dragon Vlast. Sigmund bore crystalline horns as a result; horns that they feared would draw the ire of many charr, and yet, Sigmund felt more at home with himself than ever before.
5. How do they feel about their family? Chosen and/or biological?
Sigmund appreciates all that Oberon has done for him and continues to do for him, even if he found himself questioning why the old man had such a random change of heart back in the day. He would meet Cassius much later, his brother having found his place in Blood Legion under the tutelage of Tribune Brimstone. Sigmund admires Cassius' strong determination and willpower in the face of adversity, but feels pain on his behalf for his and his cub's abuse at the hand of Bangar, even if Cassius struggles to ever acknowledge it as such.
Sigmund loves the rest of the Horns as family as well, especially his boyfriend, Augustus, who has been there for him through thick and thin, he would do anything to see them all succeed, even to his own detriment.
(He... views Taimi akin to a little sister, but would never let anyone in on that information.)
13. Is there anyone they'd like to be closer to than they are?
Vashir Stormspotter, a former Ash Legion scout that lives in the Shiverpeak Mountains with Skadi Stormshot-- his AND Sigmund's dam. Sigmund never knew his dam as well as his sire, just that her change of heart on the legions was evidently bigger than that of Oberon's. Vashir, having spent a chunk of his life outside of the Legions, always made Sigmund curious as to how he viewed charr society, especially based on their brief interactions during IBS.
Begrudgingly, he wishes to learn more about Arkhan Dreadsinger, the Blood Legion executioner that has given him more grief than he bargained for-- surely wasn't a one-night stand with all the trouble that came from it! Sigmund knows that man is hiding a deeper secret, especially with the shaky knowledge about his Flame Legion origins.
