"Survival Kit of A Call Center Agent."
Caffeine. Trust me, coffee is a call center agent's bestfriend. It's something that keeps them awake on a long and stressful night shift. A coffee's aroma will awake your senses and keeps you energized. But it's like a beer, you should drink it moderately. It would be weird to finish five cups of coffee in one shift, right? You might palpitate or it might affect your sleep.
In speaking of sleep, it is important to get as much sleep as you can. Whenever you have a free time or during your day off, don't forget to sleep a LOT. You need to relax your body and regain some lost energy.
Take care of your voice because it's very important in your job. When you're not working, it is important to relax your voice. Preserve it. Avoid talking when it's not necessary. Remember that you've already had more than enough of talking when you're taking calls at work.
Patience is a virtue. The people who calls you over the phone can be rude oftentimes. They're mostly irate customers who would curse you to death as if it was your fault that their bill went too high. They would demand as if you're a slave. They would insult you as if you have no feelings. The worst part is you still have to smile, be nice to them and apologize for something you haven't done. So, yeah, you should bring at least twenty kilos of patience at work.
Never let office politics affect you. Your manager or team leader can be rude or insensitive or whatsoever. But don't let them get into your nerves and affect your job performance. You're both employees on the same company, just different positions. They're not the ones who give you salary, so let them be. Quite hard, yes. But possible. Agree?
Don't stop learning. Always aim to improve your english-speaking skill because it's a part of your job and it will help you a lot. Listen to feedbacks from your supervisors, absorb them and apply them until they become a part of your system. Always try to improve your pronunciation, diction, grammar and accent. You should improve as you grow older because that's an evidence that you never stopped learning evethough your job requires you to do the same thing over and over again.
A call center agent's job is very prone to sickness. So, it is important that you take care of your health. Eat healthy foods, rest well, exercise and take vitamins.
Be strong. There's no such thing as an easy job. Don't give up. Fight. Believe in yourself. Always believe that you CAN.

Upward Trends in Healthcare BPO Industry
Tumblr media
The one industry that has been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic is Healthcare. The industry has been crippled by the sudden overflow of patients and patients were seen dying on streets without medical care. The factors that contributed to the inability of the Healthcare industry in treating the patients are; lack of proper structure, shortage of medical equipment, an increasing number of patients etc. These shortcomings have led to revamping the whole medical structure in the post-pandemic era.
The Healthcare BPO market has witnessed significant growth in the post-pandemic era. This growth is the result of rising demand for niche services, increasing research and development costs, rising pressure to reduce rising healthcare costs, strict regulation and so on and so forth.                                                                                                                                                                       According to Data Bridge Market Research, the healthcare business process outsourcing (BPO) market will grow at a CAGR of 11.75% in the forecast period of 2022-2029 (GlobeNewsWire).
Talking about Europe and the UK Healthcare BPO industry, the industry was worth USD 53.33 billion in the previous year and according to MarketDataForecast, the healthcare BPO market is expected to reach USD 84.17 billion by 2026 and it will grow at a CAGR of 9.56% in the forecast period of 2021-2026 (MarketDataForecast). And the UK healthcare BPO market accounts for 38% of the total European BPO market. With passing time BPO healthcare will see more growth owing to medical fraternities’ focus on core-medical activities.

DID YOU KNOW!
The local BPO industry is now the biggest contributor to the Philippines’ gross domestic product. The Philippine Stock Exchange and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) have stated on record that outsourcing will soon overtake the value of remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) currently estimated at 10% of annual GDP.

BPO Industry: The unsaid truth
Despite the pandemic, the world's BPO capital has consistently thrived, contributing essentially to the country's development of homegrown items and the improvement of other economic angles. Today, there are more than 1.1 million call center agents in the Philippines. It is consistently growing because the Philippines has become an offshore destination of different foreign companies, hence the BPO capital. The BPO industry offers employment opportunities to the Filipino people. According to Jimmy Mordela (2020), BPO firms in the country now hire millions of Filipinos and have increased the employment rate by 1,000 percent since 2004. It is an excellent opportunity for people who do not have a job or lost their previous position during the pandemic. The salary is above the minimum. The government supports it, and the benefits such as Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans in this industry are excellent.
My father lost his job due to the pandemic. So we needed to think of an alternative way to survive. The only thing that comes to my mind for our family to survive the challenge is to apply to BPO. Luckily, I got hired and earned enough for the family, but I still need to juggle school and work. The journey I had in that industry is a roller coaster ride of emotion. BPO was introduced to me by our family friend, Jonah Ann Dagoy. I considered her as my big sister, and she told me to try and apply for this job since we cannot deny that this industry has a bigger salary.
Tumblr media
Ate Jonah is working as a customer service representative for almost six years. She had many experiences concerning this industry. She shares a lot of them with me. She said, being a call center agent, you need to reverse your body clock "Riz, Dapat mata jud ka sa gabii, ug tulog ka sa adlaw." Since the clients are from different time zones, agents need to adjust their routines to cope with work. "Stressful jud kayo, labaw na ug mag commute ka, wala jud kay masakyan pag kadlawon. Ug kung udto pud grabe ka traffic!” Since shifting schedules are normal in BPO, you will experience stress commuting and traveling. "Tapos pag abot nimo sa work, need pajud nimo maningkamot labaw na ug gamay pa ka ug sales tas baba kayo imong survey ulaw kaayo" Insecurities will hit you once you are working in this industry, there are metrics that you need to hit this, you need to strive so much to hit your target metrics. They will monitor your standing constantly and subject you to coaching once you do not hit the metrics.
"Unsahay maka down sad ang mga suko na customer, shagitan ka, syempre madamay jud imong mood" In companies such as Telecommunication, most customers are irate. They always curse at you, and they will blame you for their own mistake. Most irate customers are racists as well. They will mock you and your accent even if you speak well in the English language. But, they are still the customer; the industry doesn't rude agents tolerate hence you need to stay calm and think that you do not have any personal connection with your customer, so why bother?
Tumblr media
“Ang nagabuhi nalang jud nako is kape, ang uban para ma cope nila ang stress naga yosi sila ug naga inom.” We cope with stress using different methods. For example, people use their vices such as cigarettes and drinking to ease their priorities every day. In BPO, you will meet many people who will meet diverse personalities and different ideologies and beliefs in life. We could not judge them if that is their coping with stress since we are separate individuals.
"Daghan kayo kag makaila, daghan kaayo mog memories na mahimo. Maka join kag lain lain na team building plus maenjoy jud nimo ang tanan" Since BPO industry accepts everyone despite their gender orientation and their educational background, you will see yourself with a diverse group of people. There are team-building activities once in a while to strengthen the bond. As a result, you will know each other more, and you will eventually remove the barrier you once had during the start of your journey in the company.
Tumblr media
"Pero since daghan man kag makaila, ayaw lang jud kayo ka attach kay people come and go baya sa BPO" People in this industry do not usually last for how many years. Many of them opted to resign due to personal reasons, management issues, and finding new career opportunities. It is vital to guard yourself that people may come and go and not create a strong emotional attachment. "I choose jud ang imong mental health." Today, mental health is essential. We must normalize taking breaks when we think that we are already overwhelmed by the situation. We must consider our well-being above all else for us to function.
The BPO industry has been a great help to our economy, especially during this pandemic, but the workers have consistent emotional baggage to make a living for their families. They cope with it in different ways for them to continue their job.

~ I remember the first time i sat down on a hot-seat like this for an interview, there were three of them and i was the only one being interviewed, panel they call it. I had a mix of emotions that time, it felt like i was starving but not really hungry, i can even feel it now while i am writing this..haha..I was so dammn terrified. Ohh yes, I remember everything 'coz to me, back then, i wasn't enough, my english was bad ( a lil bit better now ) coz I was still at my 1st year in college with no work experience or whatsoever but i did not let that fear get me 'coz i know i needed that job to keep myself floating, continue studying and help my sibblings. When i got in , i was so happy knowing the fact that i was undergraduate, and i've seen people who were more qualifed but did not make it. Years have passed and i started working with different types of people, dealt with different personalities, resigned then applied again, experienced the agony of waiting-game trying to complete my requirements before the start date, have changed bank accounts numerous times, and stepped on different roles. Reality check : Working in the BPO Industry is not easy but it is fulfilling, why? Well.. here's a few : 1. I have not been outside the Philippines but i have learned so many things about other countries. 2. I did not took any medical course but i know so much about healthcare. 3. I'm not an app developer but i know few things about social media platforms. 4. I did not finish a management nor psychology course but I can manage people and see through their behaviors. 5. I have not played in Olympics as an athlete but i'm difinitely a good team-player. And yes, my story wasn't all good, i also got turned down when i applied for a higher position 'coz of politics, belittled, demeaned and micromanaged, I too, fell in love and got broken-hearted. It indeed felt like I was in a front seat of a crazy roller coaster ride. Nevertheless, it was all worth it. So, if you are working in a BPO Industry, be proud and let us remove the "ra" or "lang" mentality when you talk about your job. #bpoindustry #bpojourney #bpolife #callcenterlife #callcenter #bayaningpuyat https://www.instagram.com/p/B7VQM79pWwB6Ps-G_TNeHJmzG8F5QtvnI8i25E0/?igshid=1lo12ikieewb7
