How to Make a Sine Drop in Music Production [Blog Tutorial]

What's a Sine Drop? The ‘sine drop’ is a classic sound, typically used in synth based music, or as sound design in sci-fi games, or films. It’s a great effect when used subtly, adding flavour and movement to the music, commonly creating a dropping feeling, as if you’re falling into something, or even for horror, as when used in a specific manner, the effect can replicate a sense of dread.

If you don’t know what a sine wave is, it’s basically a fundamental pitch, with no distortions or harmonic layers. Unlike when you press one key on a piano, where many different pitches in the harmonic series will sound to create the tone that you hear, a sine wave is a smooth sound with just the fundamental frequency. It is also represented as a smooth line, in a regular wave fashion. The reason we use a sine wave for this technique is because of its smooth nature. It is easy to blend into your music, while still having the same effect. Regardless of that, you can add plugins to stylise, and add nuances to the sound if that is the desired effect!

Examples

My absolute favourite use of this effect is in Joe Hisaishi’s score for Princess Mononoke. This was my main inspiration for writing this article, and adding it to a hybrid orchestral production of my own. In the track ‘ The Legend of Ashitaka ‘ It adds SO much drama and tension to the music that when it drops, the release is just ethereal bliss. Breaking through is a lush string melody that soars, giving me chills every single time. You can make a similar basic sound using any Sine on a soft-synth. In this case, I’m using Logic Pro’s stock synth ES2. A good starting point is to use the preset Sine Bass, but I like to start from scratch, as this is where interesting things/happy accidents can happen! -> Make a 100% sine wave by choosing Sine on oscillator 1 and switching off oscillators 2 + 3. Move the triangular oscillator blend to only sound oscillator 1. It also doesn’t hurt to turn up the sine level dial on the right hand side of ES2.

-> Ensure that the synth is playing a mono-voice mode (Legato is even better). Sliding the glide up to ~around~ 1800ms.

-> Head down to the ADSR settings, and increase the attack so the notes start smoothly, and don’t suddenly cut in. Also pull back the sustain by about half.

-> Add some distortion in ES2 or with a plugin to beef up the sound. You want the distortion to be bright, if you can, but it’s down to personal taste. Some chorus works really nicely to smooth out the distortion too!

-> Now we’re going to assign LPF FM [Low Pass Filter Frequency Modulation] to the MIDI-Modulation control for some automation later on. Turn the blend fader in the big round filter section in the middle of ES2 all the way to the right (and increase the cutoff on the right while you’re there..). This is because we need to use the FM dial for the modulation. Then, go to the dark blue router panel and on the first set, click the box, and on the dropdown choose LPF FM. The middle box should be set to off, and choose ModWhl for the lower. Then slide the little green arrow to the side all the way down. This step allows us to control the filter setting with your modulation wheel, or just the modulation channel in Logic (CC1), which you can draw automation with!

-> Then for some extra movement, you can add a really slight pitch vibrato to the synth sound we created. A similar method to the previous step with some differences. Choose Pitch 1 for the first box, then the middle “via” box, choose LFO2, and the last box choose LFO1. Then make a tiny space between the two arrows that appear to the right, so the depth isn’t too noticeable. Also, you might want to adjust the LFO2 rate below, to about 1/8.

-> Then to execute the sine drop, choose a note in the high/mid range, and let that gliiiiiiide down to a note in the low range. A cool effect can be made when you swell the modulation once it hits the low note. Also, I add a light echo and reverb to create space. -> To add impact and a ‘destination reached’ feeling, you can add a low impact, or boom noise. It’s a good position to branch out and try your own things with this particular sound, whether you’re adding this to for drama to an orchestral track, or doing some badass sci-fi sound design. Personal Project : Sample Pack (Week 1)

[Week 1]

Day 1: 23 May 2022

There are many sub-genres in electronic music and the two sub-genres that interest me the most are Ambient and Experimental. Because ambient and experimental are often unconventional, it's often a listening experience. This results in ambient and experimental music that works more like a soundscape or background track for a situation. However, ambient and experimental music can also serve as lead tracks. This project begins with research into various ambient and experimental music artists, compositional techniques and how they are executed through the material. Then the project is done entirely on hardware using Sonicware Liven XFM - an FM (frequency modulation) based synthesizer and groovebox. The goal is to understand the FM sound synthesis method and experience creating musical ideas in a dawless setup.

The research result led me to the decision to create a loop sample pack instead of an album. The benefit of a sample pack helps me build my collection of sounds that can come in a variety of genres, making them readily available. Plus, it also demonstrates the tonal capabilities I can create through FM synthesis. The Sample Pack genres are 8bit & Chiptune, Ambient & Experimental. These genres are decided based on personal preference and the tonal characteristics of the instrument. Finally, the loops are attached to 8 bars.

Day 3: 25 May 2022

It's the first official day of creating loop on Liven XFM and I'm having trouble getting the tones I want. This is due to the particular characteristics of the instrument and it works differently from traditional FM synthesis. Referring to the manual and the online tutorial, I created an 8bit/chiptune type loop.

The learning curve for this instrument is steep and I chose to create all loops based on the preset sounds available. It helps me understand the sonic characteristics of the instrument before diving into the advanced synthesis method available in Liven XFM. The second track is also in the 8bit/chiptune style.

Loop Track 02: Dribbling

Day 5: 27 May 2022

For track 3, the goal is to create an ambient loop, but the limitations of the built-in effects slow down the progress. Ambient creations usually require reverb and delay to achieve the "dreamy" and mimic the lush space. However, the effects available on Liven XFM are not ideal for creating ambient. However, I was able to do the loop after trial and error.

First of all, there’s a volume adjuster on the PCB which you can adjust to balance the SCC mixing. If you experience soft SCC sound, there a few ways around this. Just try and check the results for your configuration. PCEFAN reports that overlay code 3 works best in most situations. Please note there’s an overlay matrix in the manual were you can check which option best suits your needs, or the game you want to play. To change this, change line 120 by entering ‘ 120 OV=4 ‘ and save “sega.bas” again. For joystick support you also have to edit the sega.bas file. Albert Beevendorp wil release a tool with which you can activate the FM-PAC from MSX-DOS. After typing CALL MUSIC (or add this enty in the sega.bas file) everything works. For FM-PAC support you first have to activate the FM-PAC. Others report that the joysticks are not working. Some users report that their FM-PAC is not working with the PlaySoniq. But keep in mind that this demo was recorded with a phone (and the TG-300). A big thank you to Filip Slagter who was willing to demo YS2 FM and Scramble Spirits on the PlaySoniq and MIDI-PAC combined. We recorded a little video at Mariënberg to show the MIDI-PAC and the PlaySoniq working together. In short: with the PlaySoniq and the MIDI-PAC combined, you can also enjoy your SMS-FM games with your MIDI equipment. Since the PlaySoniq can reroute that music and sound effects to the MSX, the MIDI-PAC can pick those up too and convert that to MIDI data on the fly. Over the last weeks, we also managed to let the PlaySoniq work together with the MIDI-PAC.There are about 64 Sega Master System games with support for OPLL (the same chip as in the MSX Music standard or the FM-PAC has). Which actually blows away our simple Yamaha TG-300 tone generator. This was also partly due to Tjeerd bringing his Yamaha XG wavetable MIDI module. For the MIDI-PAC we’ve got questions about which CD’s we were playing (while we actually were demo-ing MSX games). For the PlaySoniq we had to convince people that it was actually a MSX that was playing Sega games. So we could easily also show a little demonstration in Mariënberg.Īt the Bonami fair, people liked the PlaySoniq and the MIDI-PAC. We still had all the PlaySoniq, MIDI-PAC and MSX gear in boxes due to the Bonami retro fair that was held one week before. Last Saturday, the monthly MSX Mariënberg meeting was held. Please note that you first need to install the Coolsoft MIDI Mapper and create a loopback port with the LoopMIDI driver before you can use the emulator as the global MIDI playback instrument under Windows 8 and up. It’s soundfont (sample based synthesis) based.Īnother option is to install the S-YXG50 software synthesizer. Coolsoft’s has also made available the Virtual Midi Synth, that can be downloaded from Coolsoft’s forum and it will add a new MIDI playback device under Windows. Then there are several ways to install a better software synthesizer. It can be downloaded from after registering for that forum. There’s a default MIDI playback device installed in Windows, but the quality is low and it lacks a lot of professional features.įor Windows 8 and up, you need to install Coolsoft’s MIDI-Mapper. You’ll need a midi mapper to install alternative playback devices for playing MIDI. First of all, Microsoft removed support for extra midi mappers since Windows 8. There are ways to use your Windows PC as the MIDI playback device.
