Nancy ran her finger along Brad’s surf board. There was a large strip of the pink edging paint stripped away, and the lettering, BORNTOSURF, was the same as that imprinted on the sand that she and George had discovered when they had chased after the intruder outside their cabin two nights ago. Realisation dawned on her. She looked over at the grinning young man, whose smile slowly faded as he noticed the look of shock, realisation and accusation in the young detective’s eyes. “It was you, Brad,” she breathed, “you who stole my files, you who attacked Bess, and you who is blackmailing Harry Mahoe!” Brad frowned and then sneered. “Too bad that mysterious leak in your yacht didn’t send you and your snooping pals to the bottom like I planned.” he said softly. The man looked around the deserted beach. “Soon be dusk. No one is coming to surf now.” he observed. “Time to finish the job!”
Nancy did not hesitate, but took off towards the beach huts, her purple and white dress flapping around her knees, as she kicked off her sandals, but her pantyhosed feet nonetheless sinking into the deep sand. She soon heard Brad loping over the dunes behind her. Nancy was fit, but Brad was a surfer and beach lover who knew these sands. As the sun dropped lower, the girl detective suddenly felt the determined young man cannon into her. Nancy was forced onto her back, and even as she kicked out furiously, Brad was on her, forcing her wrists back onto the sand, and slowly drawing himself up until he sat astride her. Nancy was close to panic. She realised Brad was capable of anything. As his hands closed around her neck, with the words “So long, Miss Drew!” the girl tried one last throw. “Brad, wait!” she urged. Something in her tone made the man pause. “You want to ruin Harry because you think he did the same to your dad…” He looked at her suspiciously but his hands remained loose around her neck. “The fact is, Harry is your dad! Gerry Kane disappeared in disgrace, but he reinvented himself as Harry Mahoe. The reason he obtained so much of your father’s assets was because they were actually his all along!” Brad’s expression turned from sinister intent, to disbelief to shock. He sat back on his haunches, hands suddenly raised to his mouth as he tried to take in what Nancy had told him. The girl sleuth struggled up into a sitting position, until she was face to face with her assailant. “Ruin him, and you destroy your own inheritance!” she told him. “Harry was going to tell you the truth after the festival!” Brad’s mouth sloped downwards and put his head in his hands and began to weep silently. Nancy flung him off her and got to her knees, breathing heavily and rubbing her neck as the broken Brad sat hopelessly on the ground, sobbing.

Nancy opened the door to the cabin. George and Bess looked up from the table where they were playing cards. “Nance!” exclaimed George. “We were getting worried! It’s nearly dark. What about Brad? Is he with you?” Nancy gave her friends a tight lipped smile, and ushered Brad in. “Brad!” laughed Bess coquettishly. “Did you have to rescue Nancy?” Brad simply glared at the fair haired girl, causing her giggles to cease immediately. Nancy pushed the young man into one of the empty chairs and both girls immediately noticed that his hands were tied behind his back with thin but strong rope. Nancy went to the laundry rack and pulled out a pair of nylon tights and knelt to use them to tie Brad’s ankles to the legs of the chair too, while her friends looked on, scarcely believing what they were seeing. George looked aghast. “So Brad was the blackmailer?” she asked, incredulously. Nancy finished tying Brad, stood up and slumped on the makeshift sofa. “It’s a long story, girls.” she replied simply, and let her head fall back into the soft cushion.
