I do want to know your top 5 joan paintings? I can make no promises but even just in general the concepts slap (also I am living for your mcr opinions and getting so pumped up to listen to them again, thank you)
VINDICATION FOR MY CORRECT MCR OPINIONS
Tumblr media
okay sorry. joan time.
joan of arc listening to the voices by eugène thirion (1876)
Tumblr media
this is THE definitive joan painting for me. the textures. the placement of the bodies. the figure in armour in the background. is that joan too? are we seeing into the future? is she? her expression's inscrutable to me but, i like to think that when she heard the voices they told her she would die and still she chose to take up the sword. i love any piece of media that reminds the audience of its own voyeurism. you are looking at joan knowing she will be burned at the stake before she turns 20, and joan is looking back at you. further correct opinions under the cut
2. sleeping joan of arc by george w. joy (1895)
Tumblr media
oughh. this one renders me inconsolable. even martyrs need naps. the vulnerability of falling asleep contrasted with the refusal to take off her armour. the tender way the angel is cradling her feet...sword within reach, hands crossed in prayer or like a corpse [ethel cain voice] god loves you but not enough to save you
3. joan of arc by albert lynch (1903)
Tumblr media
a classic! the martyr the myth the legend! i don't have much to say about this one i just think it's really pretty <3 the hairstyle that launched a thousand photoshoots. the field of lilies she's in the middle of...i don't know if lilies were associated with funerals in 1903 (surely they must have been i can't see that tradition being only 100 years old) but to someone who's been to a Lot of funerals she is quite literally dead and alive at the same time. what is a ghost? something dead that seems to be alive. something dead that doesn't know it's dead.
4. joan of arc - harold piffard (c.1897)
Tumblr media
again, i just think this one's neat :^). i was surprised when i found a date for it because to my (untrained, not an art historian) eye it looks SO modern. it looks like it could have been painted in photoshop in 2011, that is in no way a dig i just think it's the light which is throwing me off. this one has such a simple colour palate, the red of her skirt is largely obscured idk i want it on a tshirt with some poetry or lyrics on it. also can we talk about the folds where her banner is draped over her shoulders? godly.
5. joan of arc by dante gabriel rossetti (1882*)
Tumblr media
i am in general not a fan of rossetti-he could paint one face and it looked like carlos ii of spain which is deeply unflattering to say the least; everyone he painted looked like a hapsburg second cousin. so, my condolences. even this one i'm not sure i like because all the shades of red are too similar that her hair and the background and all the detail on her robe sort of blend together like tomato soup. but still the close upper body crop (for lack of a better word) really brings you up close and the way that the eye, for those who read left-right which is what rossetti's audience would have been, goes from her hands along the pommel of her sword along the blade to her face and the angle of her face is quite striking!
*he did an almost identical watercolour with even tighter framing in 1864

I haven't done lists in a while and there's a lot pilling up just this week so it's time to bring it back.
1. I'm revisting Old Hollywood again now that I've watched most of the films nominated for Oscar this year. The Be Kind Rewind youtube channel has been sort of the trigger for going back to the past and for that I have to thank @shimako for the recommendation 🩷 I've watched the 2 hour and a half video essays on the Valley of The Dolls and the behind the scenes story is far more interesting that the film itself.
Tumblr media
Not to say that the themes addressed in the film wouldn't be, like disillusionment in Hollywood, personal grievances, what it means to be an actress and especially not a really succesful one. It reminded me of Didion's Play It As It Lays (which I think it's a better piece of literature although the film adaption seems to have turned into a failure?)
2. Anyway, that made me go down the rabbit hole and watch other essays on Ruth Gordon (amazing woman) and Katharine Hepburn.
3 . Speaking of Hepburn, I realized yesterday that I've only seen her paired on screen with Cary Grant and not with Spencer Tracy (I know!). So I rectified that mistake and I watched Adam's Rib (George Cukor, 1949) and I finally understood what all the fuss was about and I have some sort of theory. Grant and Hepburn together are like this very performative version of a couple in which the constant bickering takes center stage, but even when they do get together, it lacks something. A bit of authenticity. But with the Hepburn-Tracy duo, you can almost feel it. It's right there in the small, natural gestures. Instant chemistry and love. They work so well together. I guess the off screen affair of 26 years helped that as well.
Tumblr media
3. I love Mommy Dearest and Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford. The screaming, the crying, the makeup, "No wire hangers!". Poor baby Christina. It's a shame though that Faye Dunaway distanced herself from it because of how "bad" it turned out, but I understand why she felt she had to do it.
But I also couldn't help but think of DeNiro in Cape Fear and his own campy performance in a very 90s ridiculous film that allowed Scorsese to try his hand at that type of thriller. DeNiro's career didn't suffer because of it, as opposed to Dunaway's version of camp, which I prefer actually. It may have been hated at that time, but Mommie Dearest is a cult classic.
Tumblr media
*Bonus: Currently listening to another You Must Remember This podcast series. It's Gossip Girls: Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper, aka the famous old Hollywood gossip columnists.
Now, for some ridiculous internet & showbiz drama:
4. People going conspiracy mode over Kate Middleton? Some of us lived months without any sign from Jimin. They could learn from that. But love the memes.
5. I feel sorry for those kids in Glasgow. They really experienced the effects of AI used by assholes who wanted to make some money. The lady in green hair has been all over twitter and whilst funny for us, it is shitty to be in her shoes. The Unknown! 🤦‍♀️
6. Who was an ass to Rebecca Ferguson on set? The consensus is that Jake Gyllenhaal was the culprit and I wouldn't be surprised. But it needs more investigating.
7. Over in K-Pop Land Karina gets a boyfriend, her fans are devasted and Koreaboo is pumping "articles" by the minute. What else is new?
8. Stans of all types are stanning and fighting. One day 🐥 girlies, the next day 🐰 girlies and all the other crazies all week long, no break. I do read the stuff in my inbox, but I'm really not in a mood to comment on every shitty thing that happens so often. I know that once I do it, then I just invite more and it's just pointless. There's no actual JM and JK which is frustrating enough and no travel show on the horizon and it's just too bleak at this point.
Tumblr media
We're waiting, clock is ticking. At least release a travel show as a summer content, ok?
9. I did see that Billboard kpop 100 top. Yeah, I don't understand the logic of including individual artists if they haven't charted on their own. Don't these people have editors to point out the flaws in the listicles? It's just dumb.

Hi. What do you mean that GMMTV encourages the kpopification of BL? I understand the final answer but I'm lost on the rest.
I'ma be honest I don't know where that post went so idk what I said in full sorry dude
but overall, I mean that gmmtv markets their talent like Idols rather than Actors.
So it's something @lugarn has also brought up, but gmmtv works like an Old Hollywood Studio did. So in the 20/30s actors weren't freelance like they are now, they had contracts with specific studios. For example, Joan Crawford was under contract at MGM for years, studios would be the ones to choose what films the actors did, they'd also choose a "persona" for them as well to present to the public. This was often connected to the types of films they did, to blur the lines of the star with the film char they'd play and get the audience to build a connection (we'd call this a para-social relationship today) with them.
Joan was often cited as frustrated with MGM because she didn't feel like they were using her to her full potential but she couldn't do films that weren't MGM unless she dissolved her contract. It's like how First will never star in a MeMindY production he's contracted under GMMTV. Eventually Joan did dissolve her contract with MGM and moved to Warner Bros, whhere it was the same thing, ie she could only do films produced by Warner Bros but hey she got an Oscar and a pop culture iconic movie outta that deal so. Here's a good video about Joan Crawford.
Kpop operates in a similar way, companies will present group members as Idols often times with specific roles - Leader, Lead Vocal, Lead Visual, Main Dancer, Main Rapper blah blah blah - and a persona for them. They present a curated version of themselves to the public and are sold more as products than musicians*. You'll notice that there will be similarities to how Branded couples are marketed, not as actors but as products as well. Case in point:
Tumblr media
This is merch for ForceBook, not them separately, not their characters in Enchante or Boss and a Babe, or Only Friends like you'd see with other actors but together. What's being sold and marketed here? What is the product? ForceBook, not Force and Book even, but Forcebook.
I tried to find merch for Man Suang but could only find someone reselling the film cups. I looked up Kinnporsche merch and found this, which includes a necklace that says "Porsche" a tracksuit based off the bodyguard uniform (which I would legit buy tbh). I also found a plush series based on the KP characters, and a lightstick based on the show.
Know what's not there? Anything that's specific to MileApo or BarcodeJeff or even BibleBuild.
When I looked up Bad Buddy this was the only merch I found (which is wild considering the popularity of the show). I did find OhmNanon merch but I couldn't tell if it was official so I'm erring on the side of caution and assuming it isn't.
But look at the difference between the merch for Bad Buddy, undenibly one of gmmtv's most successful shows to date, and ForceBook's "couples" merch.
Now, before anyone jumps me no I'm not saying Forcebook don't "deserve" merch or like whatever, but look at the merch for A Boss and a Babe and how it's marketed and labeled:
Tumblr media
It's not labeled or marketed as "Boss and a Babe" it's marketed as "ForceBook". Force-Book plush dolls (as seen on a Boss and a Babe!), Force-Book folder (not even in the costumes of their chars lol). The closest to actual show merch is the mug.
So when I say gmmtv sells a weird combo of actor-idols I mean it. They're not selling the Actors as Actors first and foremost, they're selling them as a branded coupled up product.
If you look up Squid Game the merch you'll find is going to be specific to the show. Not the actors because the show it the selling point, the actors as a bonus, a benefit, an additional. People might go to see a movie for Angelina Jolie but they go to see her in a good movie. Because they wanna see her act.
gmmtv often makes shows that just have outright miscasts but the miscasts will happen b/c they need to keep their branded couple(s) together because the show isn't the product the branded couple is.
Fans don't care that ohm and nanon don't wanna work together again, or if they'd even be good in another series again, they just wanna see them together.
My thoughts aren't as articulate as they should be regarding this so forgive bro hope this made some sense at least
*I do want to note that the kpop industry IS getting better at treating their idols, there has been push back and progress made as well and I don't want that to get lost in the sauce here

Baz's Playlist
Song titles are in RED Lyrics are in italics
Carry On Portion:
You're dead: its about vampires and is the title song to my favorite movie which is about vampires...how could I not?
Bad guy: ohhhhh boy you're gonna see a lot of Billie. So first of all the line "creeping around like no one knows" omg Simon following him. I felt this is also a good song for Baz's love for Simon that he hides behind a wall of cruelty and thus making himself the bad guy. And that end bit is absolutely Baz taunting Simon.
Broken boy: This song is really good at portraying Baz's hate for being a vampire and constantly diminishing his experiences, hence the lines "broken boy, how does it feel?" and "tell me why I'm forced to live in this skin" there's also a line that mentions vampire so I felt that tied it all together
Rebel Prince: my dumbass didn't notice this was also on Rainbow's for longer than I care to admit but just read the lyrics this is the most pining Baz song I've ever heard. Bonus points cause I love this album and Simon has a song from this album on my Simon playlist, they match!
my strange addiction: OH! OHHHHH! OH MY GOD! THIS FUCKING SONG! This is baz in my brain and here is why and this might be the longest explanation on this post tbh
Right so first couple verses and chorus omg Baz to a T!! The don't ask questions verse is straight up just "don't ask me if I'm a vampire. You don't want to know the answer. And I know i shouldn't talk to you"
The little grammar joke is just, Baz being a smarty pants
Then obviously him saying he wants Simon and I like the line "get what I want" cause Baz grew up rich
And the bad bad news bit is perfect like, always saying one of them is gonna defeat the other, saying Simon is a fuse and if they fight they'll explode
And the chorus is just him being obsessed with simon
The deadly fever verse with the fever and fire symbology is perfect, especially since Simon was always warm and Baz probably did think Simon could light him on fire just by kissing him and obviously the "kinda like it" bit is Baz being disturbed lol
And the bite my glass set myself on fire is pure self depreciating Baz just calling himself crass and wired and then its back to the chorus....thank you for your time onto the next thing!
I hate myself for loving you: self explanatory plus I love Joan Jett soooooo
Touch me I'm sick: nothing really in the song thats baz esc but the title is call back to the "I'm disturbed (ask anyone)"
I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE: Baz's constant battle with his fantasies
Oxytocin: mix of fantasies and wanting to make Simon yell, bonus points for the against God lines
Around my head: Not understanding why he loves Simon and hiding it
Yes, to err is human so don't be one: vampire and just...Let me paint a picture, Simon and Baz just got in a fight Baz, smelt and saw Simon's blood closer than he had before and he desperately wanted to taste it, so he's battling in his mind between "I would drink your blood if you let me baby" and "omg just set me alight I'm a monster"
Watch: doubting he'll ever be with Simon, bonus points for fire metaphor
Kiss with a fist: OH just quintessential enemies to lovers song
Landfill: ✨self depreciation✨ and "cause I want you so much but I hate your guts, I hate you" had to add it
Girl crush: jealous of Agatha, bonus point for mentions of blonde hair
Heather: jealous of Agatha
. : fun title, anyway, jealous of Agatha
Haleys comet: self depreciation and some "silly of me to fall for the chosen one,"
Its called: Freefall: I always felt this song had baz vibes, kinda the idea of Baz confiding in "the devil" and finding out that he's just as human as everyone else.
I am the antichrist to you: I yoinked this off Rainbow's playlist, I am assuming its the song baz is learning on violin. But anyway the lyrics are perfect for him!
When you sleep: oh this song makes me so emo every time I hear it. The calm down tactics in the lyrics and the pleading to their unrequited love that they will be anything for them. Verses about seeing them in dreams and marrying them gave me coffin vision vibes and, God its just sweet baz and I wanna hug him.
White blank page WFUV live: the live edition has more passion and anger in their voices so I chose this one. This song is very Baz, imma have to thank the discord server tune parties for showing me this one as a baz song but whoever showed it to me you're absolutely correct. The lyrics are like baz questioning Simon if he really loves Agatha. And the lines "you desired my attention but denied my affection" and "where was my fault? In loving you with my whole heart" SO BAZ! SO GOOD!!
you are my sunshine: Baz mentioned he always tried to hold onto to the memory of Simon in the coffin and thats really why I added this, it obviously has the "oh my love will never love me back" stuff but "please don't take my sunshine away" has so much power behind it when thinking of a scared 18 year old pleading for release from a coffin. (Jesus why does no one focus on that more? He was literally locked in a coffin!!) Bonus points for sun imagery cause "you were the sun and I was crashing into you"
Damn these vampires: Baz hates being a vampire and I take any chance I can to add a vampire song
Arsonist's lullaby: omg Baz pyromaniac Grimm-Pitch and his drama is this song. Also the lines "when I was 16 my senses fooled me. Thought gasoline was on my clothes" reference to baz wanting to set himself on fire especially in 5th year, when he was (you guessed it!) 16
Deaths door: quite honestly, it was on Rainbow's playlist and I just like this song so I added it
Bury a friend: BILLIE! BILLIE! BILLIE!
"What do you want from me? Why don't you run from me? What are you wondering? What do you know?" 5th year
"Why aren't you scared of me? Why do you care for me?" 8th year,
and the bonus points line "honestly i thought i would be dead by now"
Poses: this song makes me think of baz walking through Pitch manor in his suit ready to go to the vampire bar
A Burning Hill: you all know why this is on here
Today I will wear my white button-down I'm tired of wanting more I think I'm finally worn For you have a way of promising things And I've been a forest fire I am a forest fire And I am the fire and I am the forest And I am a witness watching it I stand in a valley watching it And you are not there at all
Thats just chapter 61
I'll be good: I've always thought of this song like Baz promising to be better after hurting Simon so much and realizing he had done wrong
Bloodsport: such a baz song, also from Rainbow's playlist, and my favorite line that makes me think of Baz, "I will burn the people who hurt you the most and I will not learn"
Wayward Son Portion:
Too late to say goodbye: this is kind of a play of Baz's love for Simon but dislike of seeing him so depressed and awaiting the end, its "too late to say goodbye" for Baz, he's in too deep.
Its alright now: I yoinked this off Rainbow's playlist and she explained why it's on Baz's playlist, check that out here!
Drift away Omnichord: so yes, this is a Steven universe song, but the Omnichord cover has the echoey vibes I wanted. And just genderbend the song to be male and its Baz in WS, case, and point,
"And then she smiled That's what I'm after A smile in her eyes The sound of her laughter Happy to listen Happy to play Happily watching her drift away"
"Happily wondering Night after night Is this how it works? Am I doing it right?"
Video games: okay so really the only reason this is on here is for the chorus, nothing else fits to Baz but this was a little too perfect to not add,
"It's you, it's you, it's all for you Everything I do I tell you all the time Heaven is a place on earth with you Tell me all the things you wanna do"
Lovers' eyes: oh boy howdy this is actually the song that made me want to make a Baz playlist. The lyrics in this are just so close to Baz and the pain in the singer's voice really adds to it. It really shows how Baz is looking back on his relationship and being sad yet still feeling like "I would still die for him, here are some lines that really show it.
"Love was kind, for a time Now just aches and it makes me blind"
"Were we too young? Our heads too strong To bear the weight of these lover's eyes"
"But do not ask the price I pay I must live with my quiet rage Tame the ghosts in my head That run wild and wish me dead Should you shake my ash to the wind Lord, forget all of my sins Oh, let me die where I lie 'Neath the curse of my lover's eyes"
Change it all: ohhhhh lord this song, its pretty self explanatory in the title. Baz wants to change the life around him, wants Simon to feel better, and have a boyfriend who shows love to him instead of only having a whisper of affection in the air.
"Heard a whisper Something said so sweet Now quiet as ever, we'll leave this scene"
Million reasons: staying with your love even if they're giving you a million reasons to leave.
The Night we met: Baz wanting to go back to when he and Simon first started their relationship
Any Way The Wind Blows Portion:
Noise: another one yoinked from Rainbow's playlist, but omg this song!! Just so perfect for watching your love slowly slip away
Happier in hell: so I feel its brushed over that Baz refuses to get help for himself and seems to push everything down until he breaks down. Now the lyrics that I think need some backstop would be the drinking line because it is confirmed when he was in fifth he would get drunk in the catacombs (granted Simon only caught him once but I always read it like he did it a lot) and also the "I'm an imposter" line, omg being a vampire/gay and keeping it hidden and then the "i should suck it up" super fits to him and I think the "I've been to heaven" applies to him being with Simon before WS and this song would fit to WS/early AWTWB Baz
My cell: this song has very few lyrics but they're so powerful and fitting to Baz in early awtwb, I particularly focus this song on when Baz is texting Simon and getting no response
"Falling in love is wonderful Falling in love is so alone My cell"
A case of you: Canon break up song babyyyyy
If you love me, come clean: questioning if Simon loves him or not
Mystery of love: its just a pretty love song that has soft getting back together vibes
Before you gotta go: getting used to being with each other and honest, and getting past fights, its a sweet song I feel it relates to Baz and Simon's getting back together moment
Make me feel: *wolf whistle*
Stolen dance: Baz is finally getting the love he deserves and wanted, their dance was stolen but now they got it back
m'lover: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
"I want to say what lovers say to you I want to feel what lovers feel with you I want to do it with you"
Cinema (Acoustic): i really don't like the original version of this song but this one is really pretty, and very accurate to Baz watching Simon.
Little things: domesticity baby, that's what its all about
Sweet creature: learning to be in a serious relationship, but they love each other
I will: Canon song in the book but also just Baz
I found: he found his love, right in front of him
Coffee: ✨domesticity✨
Dream: Baz just living his dream
Some things cosmic: its haunting, its kinda creepy, its about devotion and love, its Baz
Sea of love: i think this is just a super sweet end to his playlist (for now)
