Leonardo DiCaprio signs up to advise US refrigerant maker - Bluon Energy
Bluon Energy signs up Hollywood star to promote its R22 replacement TdX 20
A US refrigerant manufacturer which has developed a close alternative to R22 has achieved a major coup by signing up Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio as environmental advisor.
Mr DiCaprio, who is also a high profile environmental activist, is one of the advisors and investors engaged to help Bluon Energy to create awareness of the energy efficiency gains that can be made with its TdX 20 product, which has the Ashrae classification R458A.

These partnerships are central to helping businesses, facility owners and ultimately home owners everywhere understand the enormous savings and environmental benefit they can achieve with our refrigerant and approach. Leonardo DiCaprio said: “Electricity generation is a primary driver of carbon emissions, and it is contributing greatly to our planet’s growing climate crisis. We need to work across all sectors of our consumption to ensure the development of energy-efficient products that will help reduce emissions. Bluon is at the forefront of tackling energy efficiency in our existing heating and air conditioning infrastructure which makes their approach an immediate part of the solution.”
With the US still able to use R22 in pure form until 2020, the manufacturer claims that by using R458A, a commercial facility can implement ‘a sustainable and practical solution’ to the impending R22 phase-out, reducing emissions without purchasing new equipment.
Bluon added “With R22 prices continuing to rise, Bluon TdX 20 is substantially less expensive, enabling facilities to save on maintenance and energy costs, while benefiting the environment.
In addition to new investors, Bluon announced that it is joining the New Energy Opportunities (NEO) Network, a collaborative online platform managed by Schneider Electric that will connect Bluon with commercial and industrial companies actively looking for energy efficiency and sustainability solutions.
Mr DiCaprio added: “If we can make our existing heating and cooling systems more efficient, then we will drastically reduce the level of global emissions. This is a critical task if we are serious about tackling the underlying cause of climate change.”
Bluon claims that use of R458A will allows end-users to reduce the electricity consumed by their HVACR equipment by up to 25 per cent, while simultaneously removing R22 from systems.
Bluon CEO, Douglas Reinke said: “The numbers are significant. If you take a typical three storey, 100,000 square foot office building, we can swap out their R22 with less expensive TdX 20 and reduce their carbon footprint by more than 100 tonnes of CO2 every year, while simultaneously saving the facility tens of thousands of dollars in electricity costs per year.”
