Back in 1987, the Montreal Protocol was finalized, an agreement among all countries to protect the ozone layer by discontinuing the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). The ozone layer, as you may already know filters out harmful UV rays, which are associated with reduced agricultural productivity, disruption of the marine ecosystems and even skin cancer. This effort has already started to restore the ozone layer, but a new and concerning issue has risen along the way. According to the physicist Peter Capuciati who has specialized in research on alternatives to overcome the limitations in HVAC efficiency, the refrigerants currently on the market, while they do not deplete the ozone layer, they actually take a toll on HVAC systems performance. As a result, energy consumption has increased anywhere between 5 to 30 percent, depending on the refrigerant.
The primary goal of phasing out R-22 is to have environmental benefits, and so, the alternatives are actually backfiring since they have an adverse effect on it due to their increased energy consumption. With an aim to hamper this, the physicist co-founded Bluon, a relatively new refrigerant manufacturer.
According to statistics, HVAC-R systems use around 40 percent of all electricity. Considering the fact that electricity is responsible for over 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, the HVAC-R share of global warming is at a staggering 12 percent, which is just about half of all the vehicles on the road. In 1930 the first Freon product was manufactured. It was R-12 and is now banned in a similar fashion to R-22. The major problem with all of the CFC refrigerants is that they lead to severe ozone depletion.
R-20 and R-22 served their purpose at the time. They helped to replace an extremely dangerous refrigerant that not only damaged the environment but was extremely harmful to humans as well. However, experts realize that it’s time to make a change once again. R-22 is steadily destroying the ozone layer and the government is calling for an alternative. That’s where Bluon Energy comes into the scene.
The Advantages Of Bluon Energy
The popularity of R-22 Freon means that systems designed for its use are in homes, stores, businesses, and hospitals across the country. These systems are designed specifically to work with the properties of R-22 and cannot work with the newer refrigerants hitting the market. That is, except for Tdx 20 Bluon Energy. Bluon was designed specifically to work in the same systems that are already relying on Freon.
But just because it works in the same system doesn’t mean it suffers from the same pitfalls as Freon. As a matter of fact, it’s more efficient that Freon and it’s more efficient than any of the alternatives. Most replacements, such as R-407C, are actually less efficient than Freon. They are simply being chosen because they don’t have a severe impact on the environment like R-22.
In comparison, Tdx 20 avoids having a negative impact on the Ozone layer while also increasing efficiency. A system with Bluon can experience an efficiency boost of 25 percent. A system with R-407C can experience an efficiency decrease of 10 percent. That’s a huge difference.
Like most refrigerants, Bluon goes through a series of phase changes inside the unit to transfer heat. By going through five different phase shifts it is capable of utilizing the full length of the coil. This allows it to transfer more heat than traditional Freon or any other alternative.
It also helps regulate amp draw more efficiently than R-22. A system using Bluon will experience a smooth amp draw averaging around 73 amps. Freon, on the other hand, experiences sporadic spikes in amp draw with an average of 86 amps and peaks above 100 amps. Not only does that consume more energy, but it also puts more strain on the condensor.

By January 1, 2020 Freon will be a thing of the past. But that doesn’t mean your expensive HVAC-R systems need to be discarded. Instead, make the upgrade to a more efficient refrigerant like Bluon that is capable of working in your existing equipment.

TDX 20 has completed all the necessary hurdles required for it to enter the market place. It has been cleared for use by the EPA, and has also satisfied all the necessary ASHRAE requirements and has been assigned the designation R-458A.
Instead of looking to spend a huge amount of money in the installation of a new HVAC system that does not run on R-22 refrigerant, consider using TDX 20 to save on cost, while also saving the environment.
