I’m usually not someone who wants to buy a new printing of a book just because it has a different cover but the Temeraire art by Rovina Cai has me so tempted!
There is even spine cover art for the entire collection!

This series remains one of my favorites and I implore everyone to read these wonderful books! Dragon riders in the Napoleonic wars, with rich cultures from around the world, intense battle scenes, dragons arguing for fair rights and pay, and more!

Temeraire did not quite know what to think of him: he had been very ready to take Junichiro to his heart, when he had learnt everything that young man had done, to see Laurence safely back; but Junichiro had been so very standoffish; he had spurned Temeraire’s thanks, saying, “I did nothing for his sake,” and when Temeraire had asked him for lessons in Japanese, shipboard, he had refused with a flat, unfriendly, “Of what use could such instruction be to you? We will never return there again,” and he had walked clear away across the dragondeck.
Junichiro feels about being thanked by Laurence exactly the way Laurence felt about being thanked by Napoleon

TEMERAIRE SPOILERS (for those select few I’ve seen live blogging)

As much as I love the plot of book 8, sometimes I get a little bit sad that, while we got to see Granby’s honest reaction, we we were robbed of Laurence getting the news Iskierka was with Temeraires egg. You just know he would have been properly mortified.

So there are times when I'm rereading the Temeraire books and I just kind of want the conversations between the captains when Laurence ISN'T there. For example:
The conversation that had to have happened in Blood of Tyrants that likely went "Do we tell him about the treason?" "We absolutely DO NOT, the last time he knew he committed treason he had a moral crisis and war crimed across England until Tharkey went 'WTAF, dude?'"
The conversation that had to have happened in Empire of Ivory after Jane and the other captains found out Laurence had taken the mushrooms to France but before they told the admiralty. That conversation begins with Jane Roland going "HE FUCKING WHAT NOW?" and ends with her cursing a blue streak for five solid minutes.
The conversation that had to have happened shortly before Crucible of Gold where the captains gossip amongst themselves after Riley showed up at the covert and pitched a complete bitch fit because Harcourt was going flying with Lily and his toddler. This conversation involves a lot of snickering and residual anger at Riley for getting Harcourt pregnant with a 10lb baby that nearly killed her to give birth to.

Part 2 (Part 1 here Part 3 here) of the character descriptions in the Temeraire books I've remembered to snatch pictures of.
In order: Black Powder War (1806-7), Tongues of Serpents (1809), Tongues of Serpents, Tongues of Serpents, Tongues of Serpents, Tongues of Serpents, Crucible of Gold (1810-1811), Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Crucible of Gold, Blood of Tyrants (1812), Blood of Tyrants, Blood of Tyrants, Blood of Tyrants.
Under a cut because there are a lot.

Note: Based off of the math I've done with Granby's ages throughout the books he would actually be 32 in the last picture, since it is 1812

Can we just talk about 'Victory of Eagles' for a second? Because God damn it's depressing, but so well done. The consequences of 'Empire of Ivory,' are plain to see, and the toll it takes both on Laurence and Temeraire.
Speaking as someone who is/has been passively suicidal, seeing it from a protagonist in a book series I love so much kind of blew me away. He's not going to hurl himself from the bow of the ship, but he stops often and thinks, "You know, it sure would be convenient if I just died right now. It would solve a lot of problems." And that's so often what depression is. He's tired. He's grimly resigned. His life is, in every sense, over. His honor is void. For a man like Laurence, that's worse than death. Particularly at this stage, before he's able to adapt, and come to whatever terms he can. He neglects his appearance. He doesn't shave. He doesn't wash. His eyes are deadened, and his tone. To the point that Temeraire notices. He continues to carry out his duties. Life doesn't stop when you've got shit to do, but he's going through the motions. He doesn't care.
And Temeraire...sweet Temeraire, over the course of SEVERAL books, coming to realize exactly how these decisions impact Laurence in the long term, to the point where by the time 'Blood of Tyrants' rolls around and he loses his memory, Temeraire thinks Laurence would have been better off never having met him. The self-awareness involved to realize such a thing...oof. My heart.
I just love this series. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Thank fuck for Naomi Novik, who gave me the book that interrupted the streak of disappointments!
I loved getting to read Laurence’s reaction to his new life with the view of the world he had when he was a prim and proper Navy officer, the difference was so much fun! And the fact that he found again the deep friendship he had with Temeraire all on his own, recreating it from scratch, was so endrearing to read and so heartwarming!
Iskierka was a joy from beginning to end, I am starting to get attached to her (she’s a handful), it’s probably due to the fact that Granby finally decided to introduce a bit of discipline in their life and she’s controlling her most irritating urges
I liked having the whole British dragon team together, even though they did not have the sort of precious scenes they used to have in the first books, when they actually interacted as a close-knit formation and the personality of each dragon (and aviator) had the chance to come through
It’s fun to read about Temeraire’s interactions with the Chinese dragons because he actually feels like the teenager he probably is in dragon-years, he just blurts out inappropriate stuff and asks for counsel and is such a sweet character!
General Chu is adorable and must be protected at all costs
I liked the introduction of the idea that China is not a friendly country to every other land around it and that characters like Junichiro see it as a threat, not as a potential well of knowledge and resources, like Britain seems to, naively enough
The fact that the Russians have heard of Laurence and Temeraire as dangerous revolutionaries who spread chaos and uprisings wherever they go is so funny!
Whatever happened to Arkady? Is he still in China?
I am so looking forward to reading the Russian winter part of Napoleon’s campaign, ah it will be so interesting to see what gets changed in this alternate history and what remains the same - also the title makes me think that Temeraire’s connections all over the world will come to have a great part to play in the plot (I spoiled myself about the plotline surrounding his egg with Iskierka, so I know about that part).
It will only be beneficial to read a couple of other books between this one and the next, because usually some time passes before the new book starts, novel timeline-wise, but i want to read it nooooow!

I’m now two-thirds of the way through Blood of Tyrants, and it’s official: I’m all in on shipping Temeraire with Lung Qin Mei. ^.^  I loved the two of them together in Throne of Jade and was looking forward to Temeraire reuniting with her here and OMG I absolutely love them together!
If there’s any person in the world Temeraire loves anywhere near as much as Laurence, it’s Mei.  ^.^

Blood of Tyrants, or that time Naomi Novik got an idea for an angsty amnesia fic where book1!Laurence is horrified by his future and is only restored by the power of true love and then remembered 'Oh yeah, I'm the author, I can do what I want'
