Next stop at the @blantonmuseum - more iconic art on which to feast, ponder, and draw inspiration: 1) Dan Flavin, “monument” 2) Fred Wilson, “Grey Area” 3) Frank Stella, “Miniature Benjamin Moore Series” 4) Andy Warhol, “Macintosh, Paramount, Blackglama (Judy Garland), and Lifesavers” 5) Barbara Kruger, “Untitled (We Will No Longer Be Seen and Not Heard)” - she’s the OG meme-maker as far as I’m concerned 6) Jeff Koons, “Louis XIV” 7) Luis Jimenéz, “Longhorns” w/ Frederic Remington, “The Charge (A Cavalry Scrap)” 8) Sonya Clark, “Madame C.J. Walker” (made entirely of combs) 9) Andy Warhol, “Farrah Fawcett” 10) Cauleen Smith, “Light Up Your Life (For Sandra Bland)” which also alternately reads “I Will Light You Up”, which is what the cop said to her when he pulled her over for not signaling- you may recall she died of “suicide” in jail days later. . We looked at tons more art and didn’t even get to see it all because the collection is so impressive and we got there too late to see everything before closing. I can’t wait to come back again and see the rest- really impressive collection! . @joatwood @blantonmuseum @utaustintx #austin #texas #utaustin #blantonmuseum #art #modernart #contemporaryart #danflavin #fredwilson #frankstella #andywarhol #barbarakruger #jeffkoons #luisjimenez #fredericremington #sonyaclark #cauleensmith #sandrabland #nefertiti #madamecjwalker #judygarland #farrahfawcett #inspired (at Blanton Museum Of Art, University Of Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpt8yudORRA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Katie van Scherpenberg
Katie van Scherpenberg, born in São Paulo in 1940, spent her formative years between Brazil and Europe, completed her studies in England, and a two-year scholarship was granted by the German government in 1961-63 that allowed her to study painting in Munich with Georg Brenninger (1909-1988) and in Salzburg with Oskar Kokoshcka (1816-1986).
In 1968 she took the radical decision to move and settle in the remote Amazonian island of Ilha de Santana, where she spent most of the next 17 years. The absolute lack of professional art materials drove her to research ways to make natural pigments from soil. Speaking about this period her life, the artist recounted: ‘You could say that the river was, among other things, so much paint, for it contained a large quantity of pigments (ferrous oxides) from faraway places, and together with this paint it brought me a whole lot of information. In this sense, the river is somewhat like a painting…A river is like life, it is never stable, by its very nature - particularly the Amazon.’
Exploring the dynamics of the relationship between support and material, she prepared mixtures made with gesso, tempera, sawdust, wax, and other materials onto plywood boards, adding pigments onto the surface to create abstract works in which form and materiality are highlighted. Speaking about this period, van Scherpenberg stated that these works gave rise to ‘the idea of a succession of forms leading to the unknown, the fundamental, the sacred thing, and finally painting as a road to knowledge.’
Since August 2019, Katie van Scherpenberg has been exclusively represented by Cecilia Brunson Projects.

genpadalecki: About last weekend… Had the privilege of getting up close and personal at the @blantonmuseum with renowned journalist @jeffgoodell Jeff and museum director @simonewicha . The exhibit, If the Sky Were Orange, is an extraordinary amalgamation of science and art on the very exigent and challenging topic of climate change. Curated by the masterful, prolific, and talented journalist Jeff Goodell, it was eye-opening having a translator of the climate change movement walk us through the doorways and halls of this creation. Equally inspiring, Simone expounding on the pieces themselves was SUCH. A. TREAT. I implore you to get your butts to the Blanton — it’s only there until Feb 11, so hustle! Oh and if you want to explore more on this hot topic, pick up Jeff’s book, The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet.

They finally found a place with high enough ceilings for Jared, lol!

It started while visiting Ellsworth Kelly's Austin at the Blanton museum in Austin Texas. I was impressed by the late day southwest light coming through the stained glass and reflecting on the white curved ceiling. For a moment it seemed I was in an old chapel in worship. Crowds of people silently lifting their hands, looking up and then down again almost in a ritual of worship. There must have been a thousand smart phone pics in that quite moment. Sometime later while looking at my photos of that moment I decided to somewhat interpret my experience, in art. I decided NOT to use traditional paint, lights or stained glass but instead to write code to create a new work, inspired by the experience of being in Kelly's Austin, sometimes called Kelly's chapel. Writing code to create art is kind of like making your own paint, brushes and canvas from scratch and then actually painting the picture. I started writing computer code in the 1980's in a language called "C" and in the process of creating this art I used "C#" (C Sharp) which is somewhat of the grandchild of "C". This art isn't minimalistic in Kelly's way but it is in a 21st century pixel code way. Photography and algorithmic pixel playing by Robert Gregory Phillips. #clanguage #programming #csharp #ellsworthkelly #blantonmuseum #atx #abstractart #artwatchers #artcurator #artcollector #artgallery #artlover #artbasel #kellysaustin #abstractphotography #codeart #arthistory #abex #minimalism #museumlover (at The Blanton Museum of Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrMlyYgFwur/?igshid=xpcju7koqph7

Our next stop on our day of art in Austin was the @blantonmuseum on the campus of @utaustintx - first to the this exquisite Ellsworth Kelly exhibit in its own building. Reminiscent of a church, it’s a secular celebration of color and light, and the shifting light of the day and seasons. There were panels of color block black and white, representing the stations of the cross, and the 18 foot wooden monolith (the “altar”) was carved from a single piece of wood. It was beautiful and breathtaking 🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪 . . @joatwood @gutzrobert @vckijonespittman @karenmaness #austin #texas #utaustin #blantonmuseum #ellsworthkelly #colorandlight #stainedglass #secularchurch #art #artist #artistsoninstagram #texasart #theartofthehollywoodbackdrop #oldfriends #artteacher #beauty #grateful (at The Blanton Museum of Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CptT1R3tGOf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
