the funniest thing about ttrpgs is that you can create a guy and say "his name is blorbo bleebus. he sucks severely. i hope that many misfortunes befall blorbo bleebus. he does not deserve to be happy." and at least one of your friends will immediately jump in to say "noooo... don't bully blorbo bleebus... i love blorbo bleebus..."

Alright immediate followup to my last post, what if every Overwatch hero got a Street Fighter skin? Same general logic as the OPM collab skins, basically characters from one wearing costumes based on the other.
I am aware trying to find the venn diagram of tumblr users who like Overwatch and Street Fighter isn't gonna lead to much success but uhhh look I don't feel like putting 74 images in this one post so if you want context google it. (Also for a disclaimer for the hypothetical singular Street Fighter fan that finds this, I know next to nothing about any of the games besides 1, 2, Alpha, and 3, if there's a perfect match in 4, 5, or 6 I'm not aware of then I'm just Not Aware of them.)
Soldier 76: Either Ryu (Boring Standard Man), Ken (Boring Standard American Man), or Guile (American Military Man). Tough call between those three for him, but frankly my one reason for considering Ryu is because I think S76's VA would kill the delivery for Ryu's iconic lines.
I'd put Hanzo as Ryu and Cassidy as Ken, but like. Frankly it'd be a little cursed to have Hanzo and Cass both clean shaven.
Mei: Chun Li. Mostly because they're both Chinese and I think it'd be a fun combo visually. I don't have any clever ideas for what Snowball would be though.
Winston: Blanka. Pretty obvious. Weird ape-like man who jumps around the place and shoots electricity, weird man-like ape who jumps around the place and shoots electricity.
Reinhardt: Zangeif. Was very tempted to go with Hugo from SF3 (German Synergy), but I had to pair my two beloved large hairy men who would slam you into the concrete or give you a tender hug.
Zenyatta: Dhalsim. Okay like. This is literally the easiest one. Zenyatta was literally called "Robo Dhalsim" by people when they first saw him. Come on.
Doomfist: Balrog (yes I'm going with US names). I mean. Punchy man. punchy man. Simple math, folks. He'd also be a pretty solid Sagat, but. Punchy Men.
Genji: Vega. Skinny lanky pretty boy with a crouched fighting stance, a mask, and a knack for sharp things and screaming while launching himself at high speeds.
Ramattra: Sagat. This one's mostly based on body type, nobody else that was available is quite as long and lanky as Sagat. Plus, it'd be weird to not pair the one guy who actually shoots energy with his hands as an attack with somebody who can do that in Street Fighter.
Sigma: M. Bison. Like I said in my last post, besides personality this one lines up very strikingly well.
Tracer: Cammy. Simple enough, small nimble British lady, small nimble British lady.
Baptiste: Dee Jay. Not quite from the same place in the Caribbean (Haitian for the former and Jamaican for the latter), but I feel like they'd get along. Plus Dee Jay has a down->up charge input, which you can't say any Overwatch character has anything like besides Baptiste, right?
Reaper: Akuma. Shadowy edgelord. Nothing more complicated past that and the fact I couldn't figure out any better ideas for Reaper or Akuma.
Junkrat: Adon. Lanky bastard men. Simple math.
Roadhog: Birdie. Big dude with a chain he likes to grab people with, and (as of OW2) a mohawk. Funny enough, both Birdie and Adon were Street Fighter 1 characters who came back as playable for SF Alpha, so they do kinda stick together, which is nice cohesion for this "couple of dashing rogues".
Kiriko: Sakura. I know for a fact that logically, Kiriko should get an Ibuki skin. Ninja girl, throws knives, simple math right? But like. In my heart. Kiriko deserves Sakura more. The energy Aligns. She deserves to have the Schmoovement victory dance as an emote.
D.va: Karin. This is mostly just because they're both varying levels of rude. Plus I think Karin/Sakura is a ship to the same extent as D.va/Kiriko? Don't quote me on either of those.
Symmetra: Rose. Flashy extra girlboss. Frankly I think she'd just slay the outfit.
Junker Queen: Rainbow Mika. Mostly just because they're the two of the beefiest ladies from the respective series I'm aware of. The other option was Zarya, but JQ's showboaty personality and more flirty nature make me prefer her for this match over Zarya.
Lucio: Yun. Honestly just the bottom-heavy outfit and calm, cool personality, and how it looks cool in my head.
Echo: Twelve. Shapeshifting inorganic being, shapeshifting inorganic being. Though uh... not sure how you'd make this skin look... good?
Bastion: Q. It's very hard to think of any good matches for Bastion, but I think this one's funny enough to pass. Just imagine him with the hat and trenchcoat. Not sure what Ganymede would be. Give him a hat and trenchcoat too.
Moira: Gill. Definitely would need some extra details considering... Gill is kind of just a buff man pretty much just wearing a cloth over the bare essentials, but the split color design and the fact that if I heard Moira's VA say "The mark of my divinity will scar thy DNA" I would disintegrate make me at least enjoy the concept.
Aaaaaand that's all the ideas I got. Which leaves 13 on the Overwatch side of things without a match: Orisa, Wrecking Ball, Zarya, Ashe, Pharah, Sojourn, Sombra, Torbjorn, Widowmaker, Ana, Brigitte, Lifeweaver, and Mercy. Almost all of which besides very specific body type are ladies, which... I mean considering there were literally only 2 playable women in Street Fighter before Alpha, should kinda make sense. There's almost certainly more in 4, 5, and 6 that'd be great matches, but I haven't played those yet so uh. Sorry women. Also didn't think of anyone who really fit Torb's body type, Lifeweaver's too new for me to have any great ideas for, and... Wrecking Ball. I don't think that one's hard to explain.
Anyways I hope this nonexistent target audience enjoys this poorly organized hypothetical.

Welcome to a second Monday post in a row. Am I back on that Monday grind? No. But it’s funny that it happened twice. Anyway, ya girl is ill again. Yup, it’s my throat again - but just a common cold this time. Being a teacher for less than a month and they already got me. So sick of this. The weather sucks too and I don’t know what to do anymore. I hope it passes soon despite me having to go to work tomorrow anyway.
I hope you missed my Sim girls!! Since Serafin became a teen, these tree eventually became young adults and went to university!! All roads lead to UBrite, it seems. And that’s pretty cool because I love this uni!! I’m telling you, the high school pack was such a hot mess, a literal steaming garbage, I just had to play with Discover University to feel better. I even renovated one of the dorms for the first time - it was the cutest, and I limited myself to BG and Uni too!! It has 7 beds now instead of 4 because I thought such a big house should feel more lively, and I also wanted more roommates than just one so my girls actually have a taste of social life at uni. I think it’s adorable.
I picked the degrees that would later let my girls pick the jobs I thought suit them the most. Blanka studies History - a degree I’ve never picked before. Debora and Gizela chose Communications. Normally Gizela copies everything Blanka does but the job afterwards didn’t suit her, so I let her catch a break this one time. The required skills and their initial schedules are similar enough, though, so it’s all good. To be fair, Gizela might need this time with Debora - to realise she doesn’t have to be so jealous of Blanka all the time like when they were children; this is why I let them share the room. Meanwhile, Blanka got a room with some random guy with depression. Man, this takes me back...
Y’all, I cannot stress enough how much I missed playing with uni. The last time I did it, it was Andrea Doria getting her Biology degree, so laidback and relaxed. It’s embarrassing to say but this is actually my first time using the dorming system. I’ve never wanted to leave the houses before but this time is a special time for me - and I’m having so much fun!! Darby the Dragon, my beloved ( ∩´͈ ᐜ `͈∩) I also like that the roommates can change with each semester - I imagine that some pass, some fail, some actually finish uni because they started earlier. It’s a relatively small thing but it matters to me a lot!!
So, that’s pretty much it for now. The housing seems sweet, the roommates are friendly, the classes aren’t the hardest (though you always have to work hard to be the best). Blanka loves to challenge everyone to a ping-pong game - she hasn’t won a single match yet. It seems this is all for now. I only played through the first semester, and I take 3 classes per semester so we still have 3 more semesters to go. I’ll try to make the most of their time on campus, so look forward the next post!! See you around ( ˘ ³˘(◡‿◡˶)

As per the last question, you mentioned that you were a fan of Street Fighter - Are there any characters that you main or characters you wish you could play as? For that matter, generally speaking are there any characters that you just really like regardless of playability?
For me, as to where the "Shotos" part of my username comes from, I generally like those kinds of characters and tend to play them the most- Ryu, Ken, Dan, etc. I also just happen to really characters like Cody, since he goes through a whole process of being a beloved hero (Final Fight) to a fallen hero (Street Fighter Alpha 3/Street Fighter 4) and then clawing his way back out of his fallen status (Street Fighter 5).
Curious to see what you might have to say, always glad to hear from ya.
In my prime FGC days, a mained a lot of characters. Part of why my wrist is pretty messed up now. I wanted to have mains and pocket counter-picks.
(No specific order by game)
Mains: Chun-Li, Karin, Cammy, Urien, Guile, Blanka, Sakura, Ryu
Pockets/Secondary: Nash, Ken, Hugo, Necalli, Juri, Akuma, R.Mika, Alex, Bison, Balrog, DeeJay, and Ibuki.

Charlie Chan. Who is fascinating, because he was created explictly to be an anti-Yellow Peril character. Unlike most Chinese characters of the time, he's both intelligent, physically capable, and unambiguously heroic. In the novels, he's simultaneously proud of being Chinese AND proud of being an American citizen. He gives orders and instructions to white people, and the narrative treats this as perfectly normal and acceptable. There's a bit in the first book, when an attempt to trap the..(1/2)
(cont'd)There's a bit in the first book where an attempt to trap the protagonist fails, because a message supposedly from Charlie clearly isn't because Charlie's English isn't broken, it's like poetry. Etc. The movies made him more stereotypical, & played by white actors in yellowface, but still, he's a heroic Chinese man, who is as capable and patriotic as any white man. Nowadays, he's thought of as racist caricature. Which he is, but still, it makes one think.
Tumblr media
I'm not nearly as acquainted with Charlie Chan as you are (and I definitely suspected he was less racist in the original books because that's nearly always the norm when it comes to pulp characters) but yeah, that "Which he is" is forever going to be the most unfortunate and saddest part of it all when it comes to Charlie Chan. For all the virtues that can be bestowed on Charlie Chan, for everything great that the character had going for him and inspired, the fact that the least offensive image of the character I could find to put here for illustration's sake is from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon kinda exemplifies the big elephant in the room when it comes to Charlie.
Charlie Chan is a great example of two things: One is the way progress is never a fixed quantity and often what was progressive and forward-thinking in it's time can become something outdated and backwards and downright offensive given enough time, and the 2nd is my constant stressing that this is all the more incentive to reclaim the pulps and either highlight or fix aspects of them, instead of dismissing every aspect of them based on the preconception that everything about it's history is unforgivably bigoted and must be handled with the nuance of a sledgehammer.
I stress time and time again the need to highlight and understand the prejudices that went into pulps, because either ignoring them or wielding them as a weapon to attack them does no favors to anyone. The pulps weren't exceptionally bigoted - look at literally any medium in it's time period and you'll find bigotry and prejudice and hatred - and they were exceptional in the number of POC heroes and heroines. Pulps were a medium of experimentation and cheap entertainment that gave way to much, much more varied kinds of protagonists than were permitted in films, serials, novels, comics and radio serials of the day. Imagine if no one was allowed to bring up and discuss superheroes without mentioning the Superman Slap-a-Jap posters or the Captain Marvel story so horrifingly racist it was recounted by an American ambassador after it deeply offended a friend's son and a major influence on the 1950s anti-comic trials. "Pulp fiction had deeply, unforgivingly racist depictions that deserve intense scrutiny and cannot be ignored" and "Pulp fiction was significantly ahead of every other medium at the time in regards to authors and editors striving to publish stories about heroic POCs, this cannot be dismissed and is something that needs to be perpetuated" are not exclusive facts. "A product of it's time" is not an excuse and never was, but it's a fact nevertheless.
Every time someone speaks favorably of Charlie Chan in any capacity, they have to start with a long preface of everything positive that the character had going for him. Yes, he's a deliberate subversion of the Yellow Peril, he's a heroic protagonist, he's plump and good-natured and humorous but far from a joke, he's friendly and pleasant and well-educated and wise, he's a good dad and family man and a terrifically sharp detective who's so good at his job he gets called to solve crimes all over the world, and none of these traits are apparent to people who have to google the character and repeteadly see a white man in awful make-up into every single image of the character, who watch the movies and cringe at the broken English. It's hardly relevant in the face of all the Asian-American critics who acknowledge the character's virtues but rightfully point out that this fortune-cookie spouting caricature, acting subservient to whites and whose virtues are based around his proximity to a white American ideal, doesn't represent them and they shouldn't pretend it does.
Which isn't to say that to like Charlie Chan is "wrong", a lot of East Asians love Charlie and the character's obviously got fans in Asian Americans. It's a complicated subject and I obviously cannot begin to vouch in a subject so heavily based around perceptions I cannot experience. And I deeply detest the idea of speaking for others on their particular experiences on this kind of matter, which is something Americans do a lot everytime they talk about representation in media.
So instead, I'm going to tackle this on a roundabout manner by going on an unrelated tangent to bring up an example of representation that isn't quite representative of what it's supposed to be, has a lot of issues that have been dissected by critics among the people it was supposed to represent, and none of that stopped the character from being popular and beloved and from being claimed anyway. And it's a Brazilian fighting game character, which means it's completely within my ballpark.
Tumblr media
Yeah, obviously Blanka doesn't look like anyone who lives in Brazil (whatever resemblance he bears to redheaded jungle protectors of Brazilian folklore is purely accidental). Obviously neither Jimmy nor Blanka are Brazilian names or even exist in the Portuguese lexicon. Obviously there are issues in Street Fighter's approach to representation across the board, sure, and I'd actually say Laura is much worse than Blanka in that regard (again, my opinion, obviously not universal), but the fact remains that Blanka is and has always been pretty controversial. Obviously there's Brazilians who took offense to Blanka and they weren't wrong to do so, and I obviously do not speak for everyone here, that goes without saying.
Obviously the idea that Brazil's major representative in a global cast of characters, the first big name Brazilian character in videogames, is going to be a freakish jungle monster who roars and bites faces has problems, as is the fact that all the others get to be regular people representing fighting styles from their countries while Blanka doesn't. None of the Brazilian SF characters represent Capoeira, which is kinda shitty to be honest. And there's a whole stereotype of Brazil as a backwards land of beasts and savages that Blanka's creation played into. There's no shortage of ground to criticize Blanka's representation and Ono actually apologized in an interview once, but then he learned one teensy little thing:
Street Fighter is very popular on Brazil. Would you like to leave a message to the fans from there?
"Ono: Yes, I'm aware. At the time of Street Fighter II a lot of the arcade machines produced went there, so I knew we had lots of fans there. A message to Brazilians, well, I'd like to apologize. I know Blanka's a weird character and I don't want any Brazilian to feel uncomfortable with that.
When Blanka was conceived, we knew there were forests in Brazil, and so we thought he could look like that. I was actually kinda nervous knowing I'd meet Brazilian journalists. Still, this is the first Street Fighter in ten years, so we'd like all fans to play, including Brazilians, which are many.
Thanks. Well, but you should know that Brazilians love Blanka
"Ono: Ah, good! I was scared of getting beat up if I ever went to São Paulo! (laughs)"
Tumblr media
(That's from a 2012 tv special called The Greatest Brazilian of All Time where over a million viewers voted to elect whoever they wanted, and Blanka was going to win. He was polling ahead of Aryton Senna and PELÉ, fucking Pelé, yes this happened. He wasn't even disqualified for being a cartoon character, it was an open poll, he was disqualified due to canon stating he had been born in Thailand, which I think may have been retconned since then. Again, A MILLION BRAZILLIANS voted for this contest, and Blanka was going to win.)
Blanka is great and sweet and lovable, he made the best out of the incredible shitty hands fate dealt him and became a cool and strong green man who shoots lightning and flies, a self-taught warrior who rides whales and planes to fighting tournaments, and he loves his mom and friends and kicks ass and after he's done he dances in joy and gives the kids of his village piggyback rides, and Brazil loves him. He doesn't represent any existing person or fighting style, he's rooted in a negative stereotype and incorrect assumptions, he's not even really Brazilian, and he's our boy and nobody can take him away from us.
No criticism of Blanka, no matter how in-depth or even right it is, is ever going to affect that, because regardless of what was wrong or misguided and offensive about him, we claimed him and loved him so throughly that Capcom kept playing up Brazilian representation in every subsequent game post Alpha, and because of Blanka's impact and reception in such a big game, Brazilian characters have become a staple of fighting games, and that's how we got much more diverse representatives in those games. Fighting games have more Brazilian representation than LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE on media not produced here. It started as BAD representation, with way less thought put into it than Charlie Chan, and it still mattered to a lot of Brazilians who reclaimed it and made it better than it was ever intended to be, and as a response to it, it gradually became better.
Progress is not a fixed quantity, it's an uphill battle, and it's not unwinnable. Everything's gotta start somewhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good Asian is a ongoing comic that I think does the best job I've seen yet of handling an Asian American detective protagonist, which is not really a high bar in the first place, and more to the point, The Good Asian illustrates the 2nd part: the reclaiming. The Good Asian deals a lot with the realities that a 1930s Asian-American detective would run into, the strained circumstances and relationships between said character and the world around him, because it's born from an author who took a look at Charlie Chan and Mr Moto and the like and recognized the potential in those stories that could not be fulfilled in it's time period by the people writing said stories.
The Good Asian pays little reverence to Charlie Chan, but it acknowledges that it cannot exist without Charlie Chan, and it reclaims the Charlie Chan premise at the hands of someone more adequately equipped to tell a gripping story that goes places none of Charlie's contemporaries would ever go. Regardless of how good or bad of representation Charlie Chan was, Charlie Chan mattered and was beloved and inspired a better example for others to improve on or rebel against.
Tumblr media
I desperately wish that I could google Charlie Chan without having to look at a guy in yellowface, and the ONLY way that's going to happen is if the character ever gets meaningfully brought back and reclaimed for good by people who can meaningfully tackle the character and present him as he should have always been presented.
And then, I imagine it would be a lot easier to show people on how swell Charlie really is. A true, positive role model and hero, who no longer has to look like a gross cartoon to be able to exist at all. Who can finally be what he was always meant to be, and always was deep down.

The Ship Tag
tagged by @i-day-dream-everytime-help thank you!
good god Tumblr lost this post 14 times before I figured out it was too long - make sure you all put a keep reading if it happens to you!
First ever ship? - Blanka x Chun-li from Streetfighter (also first fic I ever wrote)
Most recent ship? - Snape x James, just yesterday. Haven’t read a single fic, love it already.
Favourite canon M/F ship? - Nadia x Jack (Nadia Stafford series by Kelley Armstrong)
Favourite canon F/F ship? - Camille x Amanda (Stitchers) (though I prefer Camille x Det. Fisher)
Favourite canon M/M ship? - Kevin x Scottie (Brothers & Sisters)
Favourite non-canon M/F ship? - Jacob x Leah (Twilight)
Favourite non-canon F/F ship? - Diana Prince x whatever Kristen Wiig's character was
Favourite non-canon M/M ship? - Snape x James
Favourite friends-to-lovers ship? - I dislike friends-to-lovers in both real life and fiction, but Harry x Hermione work for me
Favourite enemies-to-lovers ship? - like the above, it doesn't make sense to me. If I hate you, I ain't going near you. If you're friendzoned, it's for a reason. H x H only work because they were WAY too young when they met and puberty had to happen.
drafted yesterday, now Snape x James. See you on the cruise!
Biggest BroTP? (two characters who you ship as friends) - Lucius and Snape
Biggest NoTP? (a ship you hate) - Snape x that Evans [insert preferred bad word of choice], Jacob x Renesmee close second
A ship that you don’t personally ship, but don’t really have a problem with? - Dramione
A ship that you think would have been better as friends? - Romione
Favourite poly ship? - the Rabastan brothers x Bella
Two conflicting ships that you like both of? - Lorelei x Chris, Luke x Lorelei
A ship that grosses you out? - Snamione (I love ageplay as a kink, but I'd be pissed at late 30's Snape dating a teenager)
Favourite movie ship? - Belle x Beast
Favourite book ship? - Jack x Nadia
Favourite TV ship? - the Lannister twins
Favourite sitcom ship? - all 3 She-Wolves (Fuller House) DJ x Steve, Stephanie x Jimmy, Kimmy x Fernando
A ship that isn’t canon yet, but you know probably will be and are looking forward to? - there's no one I want to see bone right now, how sad
A canon ship that a lot of people complain “makes no sense” or “came out of nowhere” but you personally love? - I'm opposite - I generally hate the canon ships everyone likes
A non-canon ship that a lot of people claim “should have been canon” that you just don’t think makes sense? - a lot of the HP ships involving the Marauders are crack-y to me LOL
A ship you used to like, but don’t anymore? - Dramione; oversaturated
I ship you used to dislike, but like now? - Snilch, as Bros
A ship you would be cool with as an alternative to one of your ships? - Bellatrix x Voldy
Guilty pleasure ship? - My ships are the best!! No guilt!!!
A ship you like as both friends and lovers? - Harmione
A ship that everybody seems to love except for you? - Reylo
A ship you find overrated? - Brienne x Jaimie
A ship you find underrated? - Charlie x Sue Clearwater (Twilight)
A ship that deserved better? - Klaus x Dave from Umbrella Academy
A song that reminds you of one of your ships? - too tired to rewrite this one
Most romantic ship? - Nadia x Jack
Most iconic ship? - Monica x Chandler (Friends)
A longtime OTP that Disney completely screwed over by turning them into estranged divorcees with a space terrorist for a son who kills one of them in cold blood despite that not making any sense whatsoever and despite the fact that they’re one of the most iconic, beloved fictional couples of all time who are perfect for eachother in every way imaginable and have what is arguably the most iconic declaration of love in modern cinema to the point where I’ve seen countless people call responding to “I love you” with “I know” “pulling a Han Solo” and oh my God literally nobody asked for this what the hell Disney, George Lucas never should have sold Star Wars to you because we all knew you’d screw it up and turn it into a soulless money-making factory: you tell 'em!

Ethiopian Airlines crash: Father pays tribute to British UN worker
Joanna Toole (pictured) has been named as one of the British victims of the air disaster in Ethiopia
The father of a UN animal welfare worker who died in the Ethiopian air disaster has described her as a ‘very soft and loving person’ and said: ‘It’s hard to imagine life without her’.
Joanna Toole, 36, was one of the 157 passengers and crew who were killed when the Boeing jet crashed within minutes of take-off from Addis Ababa yesterday morning.
Ms Toole, from Exmouth, Devon, was one of at least 12 passengers who were travelling to Nairobi for a UN environment gathering.
Ethiopian Airlines said seven Britons, one Irishman, 18 Canadians and eight Americans were killed in the crash.
Polar expert Sarah Auffret – a British-French dual national – and former Hull resident Joseph Waithaka were named as victims last night but it was unclear if the airline had counted them among the seven Britons.
All 149 passengers and eight crew members died when the plane came down near the town of Bishoftu.
Flight-tracking data showed the plane’s vertical speed had fluctuated wildly in the last seconds before the crash.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 model was the same one which crashed on a Lion Air flight in Indonesia last year, killing 189 people.
All Chinese airlines have now been ordered to ground Boeing 737 Max 8 planes by the country’s civilian aviation authority.

Paying tribute to Ms Toole, her father Adrian said she had flown around the world but added: ‘Personally I never wanted her to be on a single one of those planes’.
He said: ‘Joanna’s work was not a job – it was her vocation. She never really wanted to do anything else but work in animal welfare since she was a child.
‘Somehow that work took her into the international sphere and for the last 15 years she has been working for international animal welfare organisations.
Hospitality company Tamarind Group announced ‘with immense shock and grief’ that its chief executive Jonathan Seex (pictured) was among the fatalities
‘That involves a lot of travelling around the world – although personally I never wanted her to be on a single one of those planes.
‘I’m an environmental campaigner myself, so partly it was because of the damage to the environment but also because it’s a dangerous occupation to be flying. Up until now she had been lucky.
‘Joanna was a very soft and loving person. Everybody was very proud of her and the work she did. We’re still in a state of shock.
‘Joanna was genuinely one of those people who you never heard a bad word about. She was one of those people who burned the candle at both ends.
‘She never had any doubt that she wanted to work in animal welfare and on the international scene, that meant a lot of travel. It’s hard to imagine life without her.’
One of her UN colleagues, Manuel Barange, called her a ‘wonderful human being who loved her work with a passion’, saying he was ‘so profoundly sad and lost for words’ at the news of her death.
According to her LinkedIn page she had worked for the UN since 2016, living in Rome where she recently set up home with her partner.
She previously worked at World Animal Protection and Animal Defenders International, after graduating from Anglia Ruskin University in 2004 with a degree in Animal Behaviour and Wildlife Biology.
In a blog she wrote when she worked for WAP she described herself as a keen diver, adding: ‘I’m committed to the protection of all animals, but the underwater world and the animals within it are my greatest passion.’
Joanna Toole, pictured, was the first British victim to be named. Paying tribute her father Adrian said she was a ‘very soft and loving person’ whose work with the United Nations was ‘not a job but a vocation’
Ms Toole, pictured, was one of 149 passengers killed
Polar expert Sarah Auffret, who had French and British dual nationality, was also killed in the crash. Colleagues paid tribute to her as a ‘true friend and beloved colleague’.
‘Words cannot describe the sorrow and despair we feel,’ her employers at the Norway-based Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators said.
Raised in Brittany, the environmental agent was leading AECO’s efforts to cut back single-use plastics on Arctic expeditions and coordinating beach clean-ups.
Another victim, 55-year-old Joseph Waithaka, lived in Hull for more than a decade before returning to his native Kenya in 2015. The BBC reported he had dual Kenyan and British citizenship.
He had been visiting his wife and children, who still live in Hull, and was on his way back to Kenya via Ethiopia when he boarded the doomed flight aboard the Boeing 737 Max 8 jet.
Mr Waithaka worked for the probation service during his time in Hull and his family said he had ‘helped so many people’ during his time in England.
His son, Ben Kuria, said: ‘My dad was a private man but he also had a pastoral heart. He really championed people. He really helped people realise their potential.
‘He would tell stories which would inspire the young people he was helping who were not at a great time in their lives.

‘As a father he was very protective and he really wanted us to do well. He supported us and ensured we got stuck into our education. He really rooted for his children.’
The one Irish victim was named as engineer Michael Ryan, an employee of the UN’s World Food Programme – which said seven of its staff members had died in the crash, including two Italians.
The Rome-based aid worker and engineer, known as Mick, was from Lahinch in Co Clare in Ireland’s west and was believed to be married with two children.
Last night UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she was ‘deeply saddened to hear of the devastating loss of life following the plane crash in Ethiopia’.
‘At this very difficult time my thoughts are with the families and friends of the British citizens on board and all those affected by this tragic incident,’ she said.
Irish premier Leo Varadkar said: ‘Michael was doing life-changing work in Africa with the World Food Programme. Deepest sympathies to family, colleagues and friends.’
Former U.S. President Barack Obama said on Twitter that he and wife Michelle ‘send our deepest sympathies to all who knew the victims of today’s plane crash in Ethiopia’.
Representatives of the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees and an employee of the World Bank also lost their lives in the disaster.

As more victims were identified last night:
Hospitality company Tamarind Group announced ‘with immense shock and grief’ that its chief executive Jonathan Seex was among the fatalities.
Anton Hrnko, an MP for the nationalist Slovak National Party, said he was ‘in deep grief’ to announce that his wife Blanka, daughter Michala and son Martin were among the dead.
Three members of Italian aid group Africa Tremila were on board. The group’s president Carlo Spini, his wife Gabriella Viggiani, and treasurer Matteo Ravasio were among the eight Italians killed.
The African Diaspora Youth Forum in Europe said co-chairman Karim Saafi had been a passenger on the flight and had been due to represent them at a meeting with the African Union in Nairobi.
Professor Pius Adesamni was named as a victim by Benoit-Antoine Bacon, the president and vice-chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
Hussein Swaleh, the former secretary general of the Football Kenya Federation, was named as being among the dead by Sofapaka Football Club.
Abiodun Oluremi Bashua – a retired envoy who served in Iran, Austria and Ivory Coast – was killed, Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry said.
Austrian media reported that three doctors who were aged between 30 and 40 and worked at hospitals in Linz had died.
Save the Children said its child protection in emergencies adviser Tamirat Mulu Demessie was among the dead.
Three of the Russians on board were tourists Yekaterina Polyakova, Alexander Polyakov and Sergei Vyalikov, the Russian Embassy in Ethiopia said.
It also emerged last night that U.S. aviation officials had issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive warning that pilots of Boeing 737-8 and 737-9 planes ‘could have difficulty controlling the airplane’ because of a problem with one of its systems.
A faulty sensor could cause ‘excessive nose-down attitude, significant altitude loss, and possible impact with terrain’, the Federal Aviation Administration had warned.

Flight-tracking data revealed that the plane’s vertical speed – the rate of climb or descent – varied from 2,624 feet per minute to minus 1,216 within minutes of take-off.
Lucky passenger avoids crash after missing flight
A passenger has spoken of his relief after he missed the doomed Ethiopian Airlines flight.
Ahmed Khalid was connecting in Addis Ababa on his way from Dubai to Nairobi but the first half of his trip was delayed.
As a result he missed the ill-fated flight and boarded a later connection to Kenya.
He said passengers were asking the cabin crew what had happened but received little information, Global News reported.
Upon arrival in Nairobi he was greeted by his equally relieved father, Khalid Bzambur.

According to flight-tracking website FlightRadar24, the plane, which was new and was delivered to the airline last November, ‘had unstable vertical speed’ shortly after take off.
Aviation experts described the data as extremely unusual, saying that once a plane has taken off the vertical speed should rise or remain stable.
Expert Sally Gethin said the plane’s rapidly fluctuating speed may indicate that the aircraft stalled in the moments before it crashed.
She said: ‘It’s the rate of climb or descent – the most critical phases of flight. Instability at that point e.g. too slow – could destabilise the aircraft, potentially risking stalling and other hazardous consequences. It might indicate the pilots had difficulty controlling the climb/ascent.’
An experienced pilot told MailOnline the activity was highly unusual.
He said: ‘A positive number indicates the aircraft is going up. After takeoff you would expect all these numbers to be positive as the aircraft climbed away from the ground, or zero if they are flying level.
‘The small amount of data released so far indicates that after only one minute or so of the flight this aircraft started a descent at a rate of up to 1920 feet per minute down. If the data is correct that is extremely unusual.
‘The data then shows the aircraft going up and down until the data stops. That is why some people are referring to unstable vertical speed.
‘You would not expect a descent unless you were immediately returning, and if that was the case you wouldn’t then expect the aircraft to climb again.
‘After takeoff aircraft either climb or fly level for a period then climb again.’

Boeing said it was ‘deeply saddened’ by news of the crash and would sent technical experts to Ethiopia to help investigate the crash.
The plane came down near Bishoftu, Ethiopia, 37 miles (60km) south of the Addis Ababa. A witness told the BBC it took rescuers until 11am to arrive.
Witness Bekele Gutema said: ‘The blast and the fire were so strong that we couldn’t get near it. Everything is burnt down.’
The pilot had sent out a distress call and was given the all clear to return, according to the airline’s chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam.
Senior captain Yared Getachew had a ‘commendable performance’ having completed more than 8,000 hours in the air, the airline said.

An Ethiopian Airports fire engine rushes to the scene of the crash on Sunday morning. It took them until 11am to get there
The loved ones of plane passengers heading to Nairobi were waiting for news at the airport yesterday morning
The plane had been heading towards Nairobi when it came down in Ethiopia. It was just 31 miles from Addis Ababa Airport
The plane had reportedly travelled for six minutes when it came down to the ground
The plane had flown from Johannesburg to Addis earlier on Sunday morning, and had undergone a ‘rigorous’ testing on February 4, a statement continued.
The plane, a 737 MAX 8, is believed to be a new addition to the EA fleet having been delivered last year – and is the same model as the Lion Air plane which crashed in Indonesia in October.
Last night Cayman Airways president Fabian Whorms said both of the airline’s new Max 8s will not fly from Monday.
Boeing issued a safety warning last November about its new 737 Max jets which could have a fault that causes them to nose-dive. The MAX-8 planes were launched in 2016 and are used by major airlines all around the world.
The state-owned Ethiopian Airlines calls itself Africa’s largest carrier and has ambitions of becoming the gateway to the continent.
Ethiopian Airlines said they had contacted the victims’ families and said the bodies would be returned home once they had been identified.

Boeing 737 Max jets were investigated after Indonesia plane crash
Boeing issued a safety warning last November about its new 737 Max jets which could have a fault that causes them to nose-dive.
The special bulletin sent to operators was about a sensor problem flagged by Indonesian safety officials investigating the crash of a Lion Air 737 that killed 189 people just a week before the memo was sent.
Since the 737 Max was unveiled in 2017, 350 of the jets have been bought, with around a further future 4,761 orders placed.
More than 40 airlines around the world use the 737 Max, which has four kinds in the fleet, numbered 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Airlines such as Norwegian Air, Air China, TUI, Air Canada, United Airlines, American Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Icelandair and FlyDubai.
The 8 series, which was involved in the crash in Indonesia, has been flying the longest of all the Maxes.
Boeing said in November that local aviation officials believed pilots may have been given wrong information by the plane’s automated systems before the fatal crash.
An AOA sensor provides data about the angle at which wind is passing over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting.
According to a technical log the Lion Air plane, which had only been in service a few months, suffered instrument problems the day before because of an ‘unreliable’ airspeed reading.
The MAX models  are relatively new but has already been investigated after problems reported. Pictured: Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 (stock image)
Minutes after takeoff the plane suddenly nose-dived hitting speeds of 600mph before slamming into the sea.
The warning issued today read: ‘The Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee has indicated that Lion Air flight 610 experienced erroneous input from one of its AOA (Angle of Attack) sensors.
‘Boeing issued an Operations Manual Bulletin (OMB) directing operators to existing flight crew procedures to address circumstances where there is erroneous input from an AOA sensor.’
As a result of an investigation into the crash the jet manufacturer is said to be preparing a bulletin to be sent to operators of the 737 jets warning about faulty cockpit readings that could cause a dive.
The notice refers to the ‘angle of attack’, which is the angle of the wing relative to oncoming air stream, a measure that indicates if a plane is likely to stall.
This angle of attack, which is a calculation of the angle at which the wind is passing over the wings, is used to be determined if a stall is imminent.
Inspectors found faults on two other Boeing 737 MAX jets, including one which mirrored a problem reported on board the Lion Air plane.
Ethiopian Airlines air crash is the second involving brand new Boeing 737 in just three months after 189 were killed in Indonesia tragedy
By Joel Adams for MailOnline
The tragic deaths of 157 passengers and crew yesterday, when an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft crashed within minutes of take-off in Addis Ababa, are raising serious questions over the safety record of both aircraft and airline.
It was on another brand new Boeing 737 Max 8, in Indonesia less than five months ago, that 189 people lost their lives in the Java Sea when Lion Air Flight 610 plummeted out of the skies minutes after taking off from Jakarta.
And the incident brings the African carrier’s death toll to 482 across 22 fatal incidents since its inception in 1965 – and almost 500 more people have been injured in EA crashes and incidents, according to information from the Flight Safety Foundation.
For comparison, only one British Airways flight has only ever been involved in one fatal incident: the Zagreb runway crash of 1976 when all 176 people aboard two planes died when BA Flight 476 collided with another aircraft on takeoff due to an air traffic control error.
An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 went down within six minutes of take-off this morning (pictured: stock image)
Initial reports yesterday showed considerable similarities between the Ethiopian and Indonesian disasters which involve the same plane.
Yesterday’s flight lost contact about six minutes after take-off, having requested and been given clearance to return to the airport in Abbis Ababa.
Last year, Lion Air 610 also went down minutes after take-off having requested permission to return to base.
Yesterday, telemetry shows the plane’s vertical airspeed fluctuated rapidly in the minutes and second before its crash, including in the final moments when it seems to have been locked in a terrifyingly accelerating nosedive,.
Investigations thus far by the Indonesian and American aviation authorities have concluded the Lion Air plane also hit the sea after a violent nosedive.
The New York Times reports that investigators are considering whether that dive might have been caused by updated Boeing software that was meant to prevent a stall – but that can send the plane into a fatal descent if the altitude and angle information being fed into the computer system is incorrect.
The change in the flight control system, which can override manual motions in the Max model, was not explained to pilots, according to some pilots’ unions.
After that crash, Boeing said that it was continuing ‘to evaluate the need for software or other changes as we learn more from the ongoing investigation.’ It was unclear if the company had made any changes.
In a statement on Sunday, Boeing said it was ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.
Indonesian emergency services carry a body bag in the wake of the Lion Air disaster last year
‘A Boeing technical team is prepared to provide technical assistance at the request and under the direction of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board,’ the company said.
The state-owned Ethiopian Airlines calls itself Africa’s largest carrier and has ambitions of becoming the gateway to the continent.
The airline does have a better safety rating and a newer fleet than some neighbouring operators – a number of African airlines are banned outright from EU airspace including the flag-carrier of neighbouring Eritrea.
But in addition to 16 fatal incidents costing 102 lives in the 1960s, 70s, and 1980s; the airline has now suffered six fatal incidents in the last thirty years, including other two huge tragedies.
In 1996 after a hijacking and a failed water landing, 125 people died on Flight 961 in Moroni, the capital of the Union of the Comoros in the Indian Ocean.
And in January 2010, 82 passengers and eight crew died when EA flight 409 from Beirut to Addis Ababa slammed into the Mediterranean shortly after take-off.
Boeing’s 737 is the world’s most-sold passenger jet family and is considered one of the industry’s most reliable.
The MAX 8 is the latest version of the aircraft, which Boeing rolled out in 2017 as an update to the already redesigned 50-year-old 737.
By the end of January, Boeing had delivered 350 MAX jets out of the total order tally of 5,011 aircraft.
