Ukrainian mathematician Maryna Viazovska, who currently works at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, received the Salem Prize 2016, which is extremely prestigious for mathematicians. The commission awarded the prize to Maryna Viazovska for her world-class discovery. Ukrainian solved a problem that scientists have been working on for more than 400 years, i.e. packing spheres in 8-dimensional space, and co-authored the one in 24-dimensional space. Previously, the problem of packing spheres was solved only for spaces with three or fewer dimensions.

Ukrainian scientist in theoretical physics, popularizer of science, public figure, Ph.D. of physic and mathematical sciences, Yuliia Bezvershenko is included in the list of TOP-20 Ukrainian women in STEM for 2018-2019. Yuliia deals with mathematical methods applied to the problems of dynamics of quantum systems in external fields and control of quantum systems. She is convinced and proves that one can practice theoretical physics with passion.
According to Yuliia, at one time she heard an important thing from her mentor: you can be yourself in any field! Therefore, one shouldn't be afraid of stereotypes and prejudices of others.

Ukrainian biophysicist, Doctor of Physic and Mathematical Sciences, winner of the Scopus Awards Ukraine in the nomination "Best team of scientists who achieved significant scientific results without Western collaborations" and the President of Ukraine Award for Young Scientists, and a leading researcher in the Department of Molecular and Quantum Biophysics Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Olha is the youngest doctor habilitatus in Ukraine; she became a doctor at 29. Olha is now 34 years old and she continues to study biophysics: her discoveries give an understanding of the mechanisms of cancer and many other diseases caused by mutations. It was Olha who calculated the pattern of mutations in DNA leading to cancer and many other diseases.

Nana Voitenko has been researching pain for more than 20 years. What do we know about pain? For most people on Earth, pain is something they'd like to get rid of as soon as possible if they feel it. Nana Voitenko deals with the nature of pain, as it occurs and spreads in the human's central and peripheral nervous systems. In the laboratory, Voitenko and her colleagues managed to develop an experimental treatment that affects only those cells involved in pain syndromes. Ella Libanova is an academician-secretary of the economics department of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and, by the way, the first and only female member of the presidium of the National Academy of Sciences for 102 years of its work. She teaches social statistics at the Faculty of Economics of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; introduced a method for measuring human development at the region level, used by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine for annual calculations.

Professor of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory, Doctor of Physic and Mathematical Sciences Nina Virchenko is one of the most famous Ukrainian mathematicians. She is the author of more than 500 scientific and methodological works, including 20 books published in Ukrainian, Russian, English, and Japanese. Nina Virchenko is recognized not only in Ukraine but also abroad; she's a member of the Australian, American, Belgian, Edinburgh, London mathematical societies. In the end, it's not surprising, because mathematics knows no boundaries and recognizes all the achievements, wherever you obtain them.
Nina Virchenko's fate wasn't easy: at 18 in 1948, she was sentenced to 10 years in the Gulag camps for preparing a "political conspiracy, revolt" and participating in the "Ukrainian-nationalist gang." Years in the camps didn't stop the future doctor from achieving her dreams. In 1964, she defended her Ph.D. and her Dr. habil. dissertation in Kyiv in 1988.
Nataliia Vynohrad, an epidemiologist

Epidemiologist, professor, doctor of medical sciences, Nataliia Vynohrad manages the Department of Epidemiology of Lviv National Medical University. She's an expert of the World Health Organization in responding to epidemic threats and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on epidemiology, an adviser to the Ministry of Emergencies of Ukraine on anti-epidemic protection and biosafety. Agree, you can't find a more relevant profession in 2020-2021. Once an ordinary girl from a village in the Khmelnytskyi region, and now the author of 305 scientific papers, and 8 copyright certificates for inventions and patents of Ukraine, proves that nothing is impossible for a girl who knows what she wants.
Nataliia Polonska-Vasylenko, a historian

From the early 20th century until the end of her life in the 1970s, our first heroine studied the history and archeology of Ukraine, both in Ukraine and later in exile in Germany and the Czech Republic. In a historically troublesome time for Ukraine, she became one of the leading representatives of the state school in Ukrainian historiography, that is, she promoted the idea of ​​independence and continuity of the Ukrainian historical process. Nataliia Polonska-Vasylenko is the author of almost 200 scientific works on the history of Zaporizhzhia and Southern Ukraine, which remain relevant to this day.
Valentyna Radzymovska, a biologist

The Soviet authorities repressed Valentyna Radzymovska for her political activities and participation in the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine in the 1930s. However, it didn't prevent her from becoming the author of more than 60 works on biochemistry, pathophysiology, pediatrics, psychoneurology, physiology, and phthisiology. Like the previous scientist in our article, she left Ukraine in 1945, emigrating first to Germany and then to the United States.
Radzymovska contributed hugely to the study of tuberculosis and its treatment in children.
Nina Morozhenko, a physicist

Ukrainian astronomer, helio physicist, doctor of physic and mathematical sciences, author of 56 scientific works, Nina Morozhenko devoted her entire life to studying the structure of our guide light and the processes taking place on it. After all, everything happening on the Sun affects many areas of human activity. Without studying the sun, it's impossible to understand not only what the future holds for our civilization but also what is happening in space, i.e. on the distant stars the humanity is so eager to reach. Nina Morozhenko's scientific works on solar prominences were the first in the world and gave rise to scientific research by helio physicists from many countries. The Ukrainian researcher's significant contribution to the physics of the sun once again demonstrates that physics isn't a purely "male" science.

When you're a tiny nematode, electrical fields are positively uplifting. Literally. The most famous nematode of all – Caenorhabditis elegans – has been caught using electrical fields to its advantage. The tiny worm can somehow piggyback on electrical fields to jump a surprising distance, across a petri dish, for example, or onto the back of a bumblebee for a ride to a new locale. It's not entirely clear how the nematodes do this, but thanks to an experiment led by biologist Takuya Chiba of Hokkaido University in Japan, it's now apparent that these tiny animals use electrical fields to disperse far afield into new habitats. "Pollinators, such as insects and hummingbirds, are known to be electrically charged, and it is believed that pollen is attracted by the electric field formed by the pollinator and the plant," says biophysicist Takuma Sugi of Hiroshima University in Japan, co-senior author on the study.

The new Easter/Spring Equinox piece is composed of two main elements.  One of which is the eight pointed star.  “The eight pointed star is a symbol of the expanding universe, vital energy and magic.  Biophysicists say that such a star – octahedron – is the model of an energy field built around any living organism. The human zygote undergoes its first cell division, forming eight cells, eight energy flows, which then shape the physical and spiritual essence of the embryo.”
“The mallow or eight-pointed star is formed by superimposing a straight cross (symbol of masculinity and the Sun) and an oblique cross (symbol of femininity and the Moon). The joining of these two entities naturally gives life. The full mallow is also known as the Mother’s Star. This is the symbol we often see in icons of the Virgin Mary.”
There is also within the eight pointed star a square.  “The earth is often portrayed as a square. Spiritually, the square symbolizes Matter, whereas the circle is perfection, i.e. the Spirit. The square also stands for the number four, the four cardinal points, the four seasons, the four parts of life cycle, the four parts of the day…”
The second element is the ancient sown field motif, composed of four diamonds each with a dot in the center.  This motif dates as far  back as the Neolithic and Paleolithic period in Eastern and central Europe.

I saw you are working on a grimdark apocalypse and as a fan of both Warhammer and fallout I would like to hear about your story but with one caveat:
You also have to answer if mothman exists in that universe
But also please tell me I wanna learn about the story
I mean, there isn't a mothman, but then again I do really like stealing being inspired by things and putting them in there. And like, I AM GOD, so I could just do that. Right now.
I mean, can't be like a magical cryptid mothguy since this is a hard scifi setting. So how can I gnaw off the sharp corners to make this square peg fit into a round hole?
What are the fundamental qualities of mothman? Large humanoid moth, portends of doom, west virginians, sexy, glowing red eyes, easily confused for a large heron.
There are no six foot tall insects in my setting because there isn't enough oxygen for them to breathe without lungs. But there are flesh-filled biohybrid robots with plastic exoskeletons, which is kinda like a bug. If you think about it.
Since it's a robot with both flesh and mechanical components, we don't even need to worry about bioluminescence or if it's possible to see out of eyes that are glowing. It could straight up just have actual red tinted flood lamps on it's head for that iconic mothman glowing eyes look.
The internet says that a average man would need a wingspan of 6.7m (22ft) to fly, though some sources can go up to 80 feet or some shit. But the mothman could probably be a lot less dense than a human so wouldn't need wings quite that big. But also that's probably based on bird or plane wings, not insect wings. As we all know bees cannot fly by any known laws of aviation, because they fly by different laws considering that they are not aircraft. I don't know what those laws are, though. So this is the kind of problem we biologists like to call "as a biophysicist" problems. I'm not on good terms with any of them. So let's just say our mothman has completely mysterious and indeterminately sized wings.
So, some West Virginians ~400,000 years ago (the story is set ~400,000 years after whichever of the many imminent apocalypses befalls us) got access to some cool hyperintelligent artificial intelligence with the ability to create life (such AI may or may not be related to said apocalypse that befell us). And they used it to make a cool mothman robot thing. For the obvious reason why West Virginians would do that. It's designed to perform and improvise on it's own maintenance to safe costs, because West Virginia.
Oh, no! It got out of it's enclosure in the Pleasant Point petting zoo! Because someone let it out! Who would do such a thing??!!
So it's been spending the apocalypse hanging around bridges and staring at people ominously in the fog while tour-guide infodumping about 21st century cryptozoology in dead languages no one understands. Doesn't try to kill anyone though, since it's designed to be an entertainment animatronic, which is more than what can be said for the vast majority of monsters in the setting. But that's also why it's survived for so long, doesn't like confrontation. Just flies away mysteriously. It eats nuts and berries or something.

What an incredibly frustrating piece of fiction this is shaping up to be.
Where do I even start.
OK, on the one hand, the needlessly esoteric and vibey storytelling is kind of a plus. That's not a thing many anime do anymore and I kind of miss it as someone who was first exposed to the medium in part by very high-concept sci-fi anime. Also the action is great; any time a fight happened I was at least consistently having a good time, the choreography and animation are really good and I absolutely love the combat theme and find it weird how rarely they use it. In general I love how the show looks and it will remain watching for its visuals alone even if nothing else comes together.
Which is good, because everything else is a huge mess at this point. Add it to the list of anime I regret giving the benefit of a doubt.
Everything Metallic Rouge does or tries to do is held back by the fact that Rouge Redstar herself has the morality of a gradeschooler. In the early episodes, this was kind of cute and it seemed like the show would be in large part about her shedding that idealism to become....I don't know, pick one; a hero to the Neans? Some kind of cosmic avenger bound to neither side in this conflict? At least someone who has SOME kind of convictions beyond "I hate fighting!" ?
Code Eve is here revealed to be the work of Rouge's mom(?), a biophysicist, and assistant to her surrogate father, named Dr. Eva Kristella. She is the one who installed the Asimov Code in Neans in the first place, which means that in this universe, all of the oppression that the already-wonky analogue for minorities face was the work of a single person. If you disregard any stab at symbolism here, this is a fine plot twist *in a vacuum*, but when put back in the context of the show it completely defangs anything Metallic Rouge has done or seemed like it wanted to do with this material. Systemic oppression happened because Dr. Kristella did an oopsie and ended up regretting it. That regret was what caused her to make Code Eve, which can somehow disable the Asimov Code, but she didn't activate it herself (maybe she couldn't? This isn't elaborated upon) and instead planted it within the "soul" of Rouge and the other Immortals.
It's kind of impressive how thoroughly that strips out any applicability. There is no way to read anything as subtext anymore, because this is purely a genre thing and has no connection to anything real. Any bite this series might've had is gone.
But OK, fine, let's ignore that and just take it as a weird sci fi thing. Surely at least Rouge recognizes that the Neans are being oppressed to shit is a bad thing and joins the resistance, right? Especially now that Naomi has betrayed her (a plot twist that comes out of fucking nowhere btw) and revealed her true colors? Nope! A decent chunk of episode 8 is taken up by mealy-mouthed moralizing more or less dismissing the Neans' situation because, well, The Immortals Are Violent, so it's impossible to say if they're justified or not. Gene, Rouge's brother, says something to the effect of this not being "the right time" to liberate the Neans and that the inevitable violence of a revolution would only make things worse for them. I'm not crazy for reading this as complete fucking lib shit (a term I don't use lightly), am I? The show seems dead-set on playing Rouge's naivete as something admirable instead of something deeply offputting and inappropriate to the situations she finds herself in.
Like, I'm being A LITTLE uncharitable but honestly not particularly so? I'm mostly just confused, like, what even is the point of any of this? A thing I suppose I had conveniently forgotten about some of those sci-fi shows I mentioned in the opening paragraph is that they're occasionally not actually about much. Sure, the GOOD ones are, but there are plenty that have been mostly forgotten because they don't use the genre to do anything or say anything of note. Metallic Rouge's mix of aesthetics is still interesting---all of the Immortals look really cool, for example---but I would be VERY surprised at this point if the series pulled anything coherent together in its last four episodes.
Then again, who knows, I thought I had this show figured out once before and then episode 5 happened, so honestly who can say. Maybe it WILL find some way to justify its milquetoast politics and Toynbee Tiles-ass worldbuilding in a way that's actually coherent and interesting. I really doubt it, though.
The worst part is that through all of this I STILL don't actually think the show is outright bad. It has enough going for it that I'm going to watch the remaining third of the series and I will probably not completely hate those 2ish hours of remaining story, but it has JUST enough going on that the ways in which its deficient are hugely frustrating instead of being the kind of minor flaw that it's easy to brush off.
At this point my favorite character is probably Cyan, who shows up barely-foreshadowed in these episodes to try to kill Rouge for no obvious reason, but she has a fun design and a clear motive, so that makes her easy to root for, in my book.

New details about the strongest spider silk in the world
Many researchers dream of deciphering the amazing ability of spiders to create super strong, super light, and super flexible silk threads—but so far, no one has been able to replicate the spiders' work. Should it one day become possible to produce a synthetic material with the same properties, a whole new world of possibilities may open: Artificial spider silk could replace materials like Kevlar, polyester, and carbon fiber in industries and be used, for example, to make lightweight and flexible bulletproof vests. Postdoc and biophysicist Irina Iachina from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), is involved in this race to uncover the recipe for super silk. She has been fascinated by spider silk since her time as a master's student at SDU, and currently, she is researching the topic at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston with support from the Villum Foundation. As part of her research, she is collaborating with associate professor and biophysicist Jonathan Brewer at SDU, who is an expert in using various types of microscopes to peer into biological structures.

As much as I would like to proclaim from my soapbox that this was a good week — that fell into place like neat puzzle pieces — it did not.
This week was one disaster after another, which lead me to irrevocably believe, for a day at least, that I am a disaster.
But I think it’s importantly to remember, even in this midst of this sort of romanticization of productivity and work and this fetishization of academic success that I actively partake in order to cope, that making mistakes doesn’t mean we are unworthy of anything.
Failure doesn’t mean that we are undeserving of kindness. And it most certainly doesn’t mean that we are deserving of hate or pain, whether self-inflicted or otherwise.
So if anyone out here has just failed a test or screwed up on a project, stammered over a presentation or forgot a line on stage, I understand you. And it’s ok to be hurt and angry. But here’s something that someone very cool (read: queer enby biophysicist who instantaneous became a role model) told me this week:
“Success is as uncertain as physics, and life is hardly ever linear. But we are all deserving of love and good things at the end of the day.”

tbh it's a COMPLICATED question, because while she loves getting all dressed up and having someone make an extravagant FUSS over her? there is nothing she has craved more in her entire life that the sensation of HOME. any jim, bob, or dave off the street can make her feel SPOILED on a date in the traditional sense, but what's really special to her are those quiet moments where she knows she's SAFE and LOVED so completely that it's nauseating for anyone who has to witness it - only one dorky biophysicist can do that...
so i think while mj would TELL you that her ideal date night is dinner at Mick's, watching the sunset from some insane view Peter swung them to, followed by dancing at a club?
her ACTUAL ideal evening would be cooking together while sharing a bottle (or two) of wine and dancing in the kitchen to whatever's on the radio, then curling up on the couch with a movie they have NO intention of watching.
