Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Haradhan Bannerjee in The Coward (Satyajit Ray, 1965)
Cast: Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee, Haradhan Bannerjee. Screenplay: Satyajit Ray, based on a story by Premendra Mitra. Cinematography: Soumendu Roy. Film editing: Dulal Dutta. Music: Satyajit Ray.
Satyajit Ray's romantic drama The Coward owes something, I think, to that greatest of romantic dramas, David Lean's Brief Encounter (1945). Both are drenched in what might have been, and both have directors who know how to create tensions that are never resolved. There's no resort in either film to the feel-good ending. The characters in both films are trapped in custom and convention. But this is explicitly a Satyajit Ray film -- a minor one, perhaps, but a gem nevertheless. The still above is an almost perfect encapsulation of the essence of the characters and their relationships: Karuna (Madhabi Mukherjee) masked by sunglasses and giving the coldest of shoulders to Amitabha (Soumitra Chatterjee), whose desire and cowardice are written on the actor's expressive face, while Bimal (Haradhan Bannerjee) lies passed out in the background, oblivious to what's going on between the other two. Or is he? It's one of the delicious ambiguities of Ray's screenplay and Bannerjee's performance that we're never entirely certain that Bimal doesn't know that Amitabha and Karuna knew each other at university and were once in love, and that Amitabha hopes to renew that love in her. Bimal is a man enjoying his power and wealth, and he's not above employing it to abuse not only his wife but also the other man. He taunts the teetotaling Amitabha into drinking alcohol, first a glass of sherry and later a swig of whiskey from his flask, enjoying the coughing fit that the latter brings on in his victim. Ray beautifully builds tension in the scene above by occasional cuts to the cigarette between the supine Bimal's fingers as it burns down and eventually wakes him up. Meanwhile, Amitabha is making typically tentative moves toward Karuna, attempting to remedy his past mistake: When they were students, she tried and failed to persuade him to elope with her after her wealthy family objected to her relationship with a poor student. Even now, the best the dithering Amitabha can do is leave her to make the decision once again: He scribbles a note to her, asking that she leave Bimal and meet her at the train station. Once a coward, always a coward, it seems.

Bollywood Rewind | Sujata: When Bimal Roy embraced caste discrimination and disguised as a love story
Bollywood Rewind | Sujata: When Bimal Roy embraced caste discrimination and disguised as a love story
In this weekly column, we revisit the gems of Hindi cinema’s golden years. This week, we take a look again at Sujata, which released in 1959. Mainstream Hindi cinema has rarely addressed caste discrimination effectively. So when a film talks about a love story that is doomed due to caste differences, it appears that the makers have disguised a pill that can be ingested with the tastiest flavor…

I have no idea where I'm going with this post but I want to say that Sourav Dutta deserves more credit for his research on some of the less researched Bengali books and authors. He had multiple blogs which are all absolute GEMS and if you are into Bengali literature you should totally check them out.
He restored and compiled many illustrations that are unavailable now, which is like really cool. Like original illustrations and headpieces from the magazines where those stories and novels were first published, or illustrations from those tiny hardcover anthologies that were popular before samagras were a thing, all that.
There’s also a lot of information on those books in his blogs, on both canon info and publication history and it’s like. Really interesting. I recently found out he died and I just wish I could have talked to him. I did talk to him in the comments of one of his blogs when I first discovered them a couple of years back, but still. I think he would have been great to cultivate, tbh.
I'll link the blogs that I know of so everyone can pay a visit.
Blogus is a miscellaneous blog with pages on many books and series, including Ghanada, Tenida, Harshabardhan-Gobardhan, Kumar-Bimal, Mejokarta, several Bengali translations of Hound of the Baskervilles and many others, pages on authors, illustrations of books, comic adaptations including a comic of Charmurti that came out in Jugantor in the 1970s etc. There's even a page on the song Bhajahari Manna. It's super interesting.
Ghanada Gallery has illustrations and covers of the Ghanada stories, publication dates and information on the illustrators.
Tenida Treasury is the one I've frequented the most for obvious reasons, and it has a lot of good shit, but especially a chronological list of all the Tenida stories which I don't think exists anywhere else. And all the illustrations and trivia are very cool too.
Manoranjan Museuem is about Manoranjan Bhattacharya, the author of Hukakashi. There's not only illustrations but also ads and reviews of his books and a lot of general trivia.
Tagging some Bengali mutuals @travalerray @a-dragon-under-the-stars @your-favourite-skittles @slytherclaw-lair @half-assing-things101 @infp-denofdreams @browsing-my-favourite-fandoms @grace-k-sterling @arachneofthoughts @goblinisjustahumanoidgremlin @carpeposterum @bongboyblog I'm really sorry to bother you and I'm not even sure if all of you are into this incredibly niche stuff, I just want people to see this. Feel free to ignore.

1980 a Year of Many Great Film Classics
The 1980s were in many ways a turning point for the Indian cinema. The movie theatres saw a constant influx of movies from both sides of the coin. The mainstream and the critics’ favourites. And, some walked the tightrope, balancing both the facets well and came to be known as classic movies. We will be going through the list, mentioning some of our favorites. The movies in the mentioned here had a lasting ripple effect that was the by-product of iconic performances and influential direction. And, the movies were just not limited to 1980 Bollywood movies but also had many Hollywood movies of 1980 coming in. So, without any further ado let’s get to the pulp of things, which is the 1980 movies.
Ek Gunah Aur Sahi
The movie ‘Ek Gunah Aur Sahi’ is a 1980 film that was directed by yogi Kathuria and starred
Gulshan Arora, Parveen Babi, Sunil Dutt and Madan Puri. The film was both produced and directed by Yogi Kathuria. The film is a neo-noir crime genre. The plot of the movie revolves around the protagonists attempt to leave his crime-ridden past behind but circumstances make it difficult for him to do so. The movie is a gem and should be watched for the bold and moving performance delivered by Sunil Dutt.
Ganga Dham
Kasturi is an Indian feature film that was directed by Bimal Dutta and starred Nutan, Mithun Chakraborty, Parikshit Sahni, Sadhu Meher and Shreeram Lagoo. The plot of the movie revolves around a family where relations are strained due to the conflicting values of the family members. A drama about values and family, this should be on your list if you are on the lookout for a nice slow burner movie.
Patthar Se Takkar
The gem from the 1980s was directed by Gulab Mehta and starred Master Bhagwan, Urmila Bhatt, and Birbal. The story of the film revolves around the life of the protagonist Bindra and how he comes back to the country to find his family ravaged by a storm of unforeseen events. The many twists in the movie make it an interesting watch. A movie that was very ahead of its time, this one shouldn’t be missed.
Aakhri Insaaf
This 1980 family drama is one of its kind, in the sense that it brings together the elements of family drama and action in a unique way. The film was directed by Kalidas and starred Ashok Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Rameshwari, Zarina Wahab, Vijayendra Ghatge and Pradeep Kumar. For those who've already watched it should watch it again for the nostalgic value.
The above-mentioned movies are bound to get you hooked and soon you will be in awe of the movies that came out in the 1980s. But, the list doesn’t here, and there are many more movies to explore. If you are in the mood to know more about the many interesting movies that came out in the 80s, then head to your favorite ticketing website.
