I'd post a "Who'd win in a fight? Xavier Bogard or Jin Ryu" question, but I'm pretty sure that everyone would say Xavier purely due to bias over him being more known and most beyblade fans looking down upon Beyraiderz
Like, honestly, the two would be very evenly matched with Jin possibly having the upper hand due to what we see in Beyraiderz.

Burst’s lack of central theme
Disclaimer: It is possible that everything I say is wrong and I simply misunderstood something important, because I find it hard to believe a series has no central theme, especially in this franchise. Also, obvious spoilers
So I have realized that I cannot point out a single, specific central theme for Burst like I can for the other Beyblade series. The original series? Friendship formed through friendly competition. Metal saga? Man’s desire for self improvement. Burst? A mix of a bunch of themes with none of them standing out above the rest, and as a consequence they all end up being too vague to make Burst stand out thematically as a series
With any piece of fiction, the easiest way to find a central theme is through the protagonist and antagonist. Discounting stories with a villain protagonist and those with no real defined antagonist, there is usually a character trait that makes the hero heroic and the villain villainous, with these traits often mirroring each other. The original series does this perfectly. Our heroes battle for the love of the sport, and respect their opponents as equals. The villains battle for ulterior motives (world domination or making Zeo a human), while seeing their opponents as problems to be taken care of. MFB’s central theme is how every person strives to become better, often taking the form of becoming more powerful. It then shows how some ways to gain power are good (training, power of friendship), and how others are bad (arrangement, dark power). Admittedly Nemesis doesn’t strive for self improvement (at least not after it became Diablo Nemesis), but he mainly serves as an obstacle that shows the flaws in Ryuga’s method of self improvement (Gingka succeeds where Ryuga fails because Gingka’s methods were right)
Even Beywheelz has a central theme: losing. When our heroes lose, their friends help them get back up. When one of the villains loses, they get punished for it. Beyraiderz, for all its flaws, introduces a theme towards the end (freedom vs order), even if the theme isn’t well developed. Beywarriors Cyborg’s theme is nationalism and how it sucks (granted, Bran isn’t nationalistic, but exploits August’s extreme nationalism to manipulate him)
Burst’s main theme varies by season, with no real central idea that consistently connects said themes. Season 1′s conflict around Valt, Lui, and Shu is about friendship. Specifically, treating rivals not as enemies, but friends (best seen with Valt’s reaction after beating Ken vs Lui’s after beating Shu in the flashback). Evolution is about not endangering yourself in an attempt to improve. This theme was present with Shu in season 1, but Evolution truly explores it. However, these two themes are that, two themes. They aren’t variations of the same theme, but rather two separate themes with nothing to connect them. Turbo’s theme actually connects season 1′s and Evolution’s somewhat. Aiger, using dark resonance, ends up embodying the worst parts of both season 1 Lui and season 2 Shu. He seeks power above all else, and considers those he defeats to be beneath him. Then we get Rise
Rise’s theme is the power of friendship (and rainbows, quite literally, at the end). Why is Gwyn the main antagonist? Because he doesn’t believe friendship can make bladers stronger. Why is Dante the protagonist? Because he believes that friendship is the best way to make a blader stronger. It works as a different angle from which to explore the themes of season 1, but it doesn’t thematically connect to Evolution, and only partially connects to Turbo (the part that relates to season 1)
Then Surge comes in. The main theme is presented through 3 things: Flare, Limit Break, and the Legends. Flare is really just a reskinned resonance, and the Legends are there to be fought by Lain and the Hizashi brothers. Lain battles the Legends because he is compelled to, thus giving him an evil flare. The brothers battle the Legends out of admiration (the desire to stand alongside their idols), giving them a good flare. This is similar to Rise, and explores the same theme from a different angle. Limit Break is where things get weird. It’s the idea of pushing yourself beyond what you thought you could achieve. We see this in mfb, where it’s presented as a positive (Klaus being the best example, and Ryuga’s flaw was that he relied exclusively on this instead of combining it with the power of friendship). But in Burst, this has been presented as a negative before (Shu in the first 2 seasons). Pushing yourself too hard can endanger your health, and you shouldn’t do it (Free was extremely lucky to not end up more injured in Evolution). I’m fine with mfb and Burst having contradictory takes on this idea, but Burst should not have contradictory takes within itself
QuadDrive’s main theme is about actions vs presentation. Bel presents himself as a villain, but his actions, especially after accidentally breaking his opponent’s bey (Ranzo’s), show him to be a batter person than Rashad, who presents himself as a hero. Just compare Bel helping Ranzo build a new bey to Rashad not caring after he breaks Bel’s and Valt’s beys. This is an entirely new theme completely unrelated to any of the themes from previous seasons. I know QD ignored everything after Evolution but still. Maybe there’s just something I’m not seeing?

i miss beyblade (a metal top toy flavoured rant)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: i am an idiot, take everything i say here with a grain of salt. feel free to attack me as you see fit. ok bai
i miss when beyblade metal fusion first started airing on cartoon network. just something about how all the toy shelves were lined with beyblades from the show, its a sight that would let me sleep easy at night if i knew that dark bull was still on store shelves. just walking into a local target with my brother, picking up a Galaxy Pegasus W105R2F, looking at all the flashy artwork on the back. then when i got home i could unbox the bey, feel the pristine condition of the rubber performance tip, apply the stickers on the bey and launcher (and try not to mess it up), then i could use the lil code card to play online at beybladebattles.com. and then i would always spin the bey onto the tiled floor and watch it just kinda move slowly bc i didnt get a stadium until like 6 months later. idk its the kinda sensation that cant really be replicated today with beyblade burst and its 17 different subseries. or maybe im just mad that they got rid of the high quality metal tops for cheaper plastic ones hell if i know.
in my opinion (i legally cant have opinions bc i own lego rockband ds), i kinda like the characters from the metal series better than burst, but thats probably just nostalgia fog. ill probably rewatch both series at some point, but the fact that beyblade is pretty much dead here in americaland doesnt help matters.
at least beyblade burst always stuck to tops, though. beyblade split into all sorts of other things after metal fury, like beywheelz, beyraiderz, beywarriors, and also all the weird lil beyblades that you couldnt take apart like all the others, like the rc beys, light up beys, sfx beys, and the tornado beys. but even then that deviates from the classic formula and makes it interesting. beyblade burst doesnt really do that as far as i can tell, besides making the beys slightly bigger.
thats kinda why the classic beyblade series died off, though. they were too busy seeing if they could and not stopping to wonder if they should. if they stuck to the original formula, that would get boring after a while, but beyblade burst showed that there still is a market for the original spinning top formula. maybe if they were able to bring back a classic resurgence for like an anniversary (15th anniversary coming in May 2025) or something like that, beyblade would become relevant again, and i stand by that.
its probably a farfetched concept, though. the higher ups at hasbro probably see beyblades as just a way to sell spinning tops, endlessly trying to put more gimmicks onto, "the MOST powerful beyblade yet!", all in an attempt just to try and make a quick buck. it just doesn't seem feasible with a company like that at the reigns, i really dont think they would care about doing some type of legacy content like that (i know that beyblade legends was a legacy release that they did in 2014, and that line is great, i have a few of the beys from there, looking to make a full collection someday, i just wanna see these lil dinkers on target shelves again).
also something i wanted to mention, but i recently found out a couple of months ago while searching for beyblade video games that there was an original beyblade manga and anime and toy line before metal fusion. i wanna try and see what thats all about, and maybe try and pick up some metal fusion manga while im at it.
tl;dr: i miss the good ol days of beyblade, and i want them to bring it back. pls target and hasbro and wbba

cube is opening requests !!
there's nothing much to it but i have a few rules/boundaries to set before you go request so please read this carefully
please only request one (canon!!!) (beyblade!!!!!!) character at a time !! you can do and/or requests but not two characters in the same picture
you can request anything from bakuten shoot s1 to beyblade x (for burst only up until turbo). basically anything that's in the tags
minus fierce battle only and rising only characters that appear after chapter 10 for bakuten shoot though
if your character has more than one design throughout the show feel free to specify which design you want to be drawn
i don't draw sacred/bit beasts or any nonhuman characters for that matter, only humans, please. sounds stupid but someone did try to request suzaku/dranzer once lol
make sure you are familiar with my current artstyle. just go through cubic.png to look at my newest pieces
requests if we never talked to each other are ok ! anon requests are also a-ok !
my requests are free to use as long as you credit me and just don't claim them as your own lmao
and last but not least: check. the. request. status
that is it...!!! you can now see your beyblade blorbo in the style of yours truly i suppose. i'll get to every request when i can
for requests that aren't beyblade related please also read below the cut
you can request other (fictional!!!!!) characters also, preferably from media i'm familiar with !
just tell me their full name (if they have one) and what media they're from
the only real people i'd be willing to draw are vkei bandmen
feel free to rather request through my curiouscat for stuff that isn't beyblade related if we're twitter mutuals
please just clarify who you are if you're not off anon
tumblr asks work too but just fyi i won't post it on here, only on twitter

I was thinking about how later Burst seasons being shorter really hurt them until I realized Beywarriors Cyborg is also 26 episodes long (technically 28 with 2 of them being prequel episodes)
Metal Fury being shorter hurt it because it came out of nowhere. The anime staff couldn't plan for it. Sure, the final stretch of Fury may be one of my favorite arcs, but so many characters who felt like they would get more focus towards the end didn't (Tithi, Chris, Bao, the other Nemesis bladers)
Beywheelz and Shogun Steel are both very similar in how they handled being shorter. Beywheelz had a smaller cast (15 named characters only), while Shogun Steel made sure every character was tied to the main plot (unlike previous mfb seasons, where Teru, Sora, Lovushka, and Jigsaw weren't involved with it). I'd say it worked better for Beywheelz, but both still tried to cram too much content in too little runtime
After Beywheelz tried lightning-fast pacing, Beyraiderz decided to make the main cast even smaller: 7 bladers and 3 non-bladers (only 2 of which are important). The problem? It dragged on for longer than it should. Beywheelz wasn't fast because of the number of characters, but because of the number of plot points it has (face Dominators in 2v2, get more members before Judgement Bey, fight at Judgement Bey, stop the portal). Beyraiderz only has 2 of these (revive sacred beasts, defeat Kaiser Grey)
GT's first half presents a unique way of handling the shorter runtime by doing something only longer seasons dared to do: introducing characters and dropping them soon after. Is it a good solution? Not in the slightest. Joe and Lodin should've showed up at Battle Island. Fumiya, Pheng, and Lodin should've been more important after Arthur shows up. The second half is better about this, hyper-focusing on 4 characters (Dante, Arman, Delta, and Gwyn), with a handful of supporting characters who don't get much focus (Blindt, Aiger, and Arthur)
Sparking did the Beyraiderz thing with a larger cast. There are 10 main bladers (Ultimate Tag Series competitors), 4 non-main bladers (Wakiya and the rest of the Comets) and 3 non-bladers (Hanami and the MCs' parents). There are 2 tournaments, the Legend Festival and the Ultimate Tag Series. From the beginning of the season, we know where we're headed (Legend Festival). After that, we have a short time where beys are upgraded and they show off their new abilities before introducing the Ultimate Tag Series, that goes on for the rest of the season. Did this work? Kinda. It prevents the plot from feeling overstuffed and no characters are suddenly dropped, but the plot also has very little depth because of it
DB does something. It presents several barely-connected arcs and we go straight from one to the other. We go from challenging Bell at his house, to Bell meeting BC Sol, to the Great Aerial Tour, to the 3v3 match, to Ultimate Valkyrie, to Phenomeno Payne, to the finale and the transitions are all very jarring. When Cho-Z did this (Luinor Cup to Battleship Cruise to title matches to the Dread Tower), it gave us a narrative throughline for us to follow (corrupted resonance). Despite the transitions being jarring, we still have something showing us the plot progression, while in DB I couldn't tell you what the plot is about if I tried
So that brings me to Beywarrios Cyborg. What did that do? Well, the cast consists of 11 bladers, and 9 non-bladers (not counting the prequels). There are only 2 main plot points on a large scale (get tokens, stop Bran), but on a smaller scale, there is much more going on. Getting tokens is as simple as winning a few battles, but each character has a different reason for doing so, and these conflicting reasons also change character dynamics. Stopping Bran requires getting Gai and August to turn on him, adding 2 smaller steps before reaching the main goal

QUICK QUESTION. SO I DECIDED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE DUB AND IT.. IT SURE IS. i gotta know now are there any particularly noteworthy episodes in terms of the dub being. whatever is going on here.
There aren't any episodes that really stand out for being different (except those that remove scenes like the kid in the Borg dungeon). I think the biggest changes are in the tournament arcs with the commentators (the "I'm Braaaaad Best" line lives in my head rent free, as does the question of "what were they riding back at the hotel?"), and the Europe arc for what it did with the monsters (their curse was changed so that they'd get their souls back if the Euro team was defeated). Also any episodes featuring Takao's grandfather have 10x more epic swag in the dub
The way sacred beasts work is fundamentally changed. Everyone can see them and they're accepted as being part of the sport. It still seems unfair that most bladers don't have them, but it's less than when most don't even know they exist
V-Force did away with Takao's casual misogyny and replaced it with him being mad at Hiromi for trying to lecture the world champions on a topic she has no experience with
G-Revolution did away with most of the slapstick involving Hiromi and Daichi (as well as Daichi exclusively referring to Hiromi as an old hag)
There is a movie that takes place between V-Force and G-Revolution, but it didn't get dubbed umtil after G-Rev, and the dub used child actors, so some characters have much deeper voices than you'd expect
The metal saga dub was pretty faithful to the original. Character name changes were just different spellings to match the English pronounciation better. Some beys and special moves had their names changed, but it wasn't really consistent (Killer Gemios becomes Evil Gemios, but Beautiful Dead stays the same, as does dialogue involving death). The dub is worth watching for certain characters (Tetsuya, Doji, and Sakyo), but Ginga's dub voice becomes so grating over time that I cannot recommend it (subs are hard to come across, so the dub may be the only way to watch it)
4d/Metal Fury had some production issues, causing the second half of the season to be shortened, resulting in 26 20-minute episodes and 26 10-minute episodes. The dub would air the shorter episodes back to back as a single episode, with the whole season being 39 episodes long
Zero-G/Shogun Steel also had 52 10-minute episodes, which the dub turned into 26 20-minute episodes. The last few episodes in Japanese are lost, so for Shogun Steel the dub is probably necessary
The Burst dub is just the same as the original but with name changes and censorship. Besides some good voice acting (Ranjiro, Hyde, and Joe), I can't recommend it over subs
There's also the Nelvana spinoffs. For Beywheelz and Beyraiderz, a Japanese dub existed, but is considered lost and the English dub is the only way to watch it. Beywarriors Cyborg only has some English episodes available, and no one seems to have subbed it in English, so I watched it with Chinese subs and Google Translate. I can't say how much the dubs differ because I can't find them

Beyraiderz had a great setup for a lot of interesting stuff, but it never went anywhere
Now, I know that there are a grand total of probably 0 people out there who think Beyraiderz is anywhere near as good as the other seasons. And possibly 1 or 2 people that genuinely liked it (out of the 5 that even watched it). It’s on YouTube on the official Metal Saga channel. Give it a go. It’s not great but it’s not terrible either. Plus the main rival character is a guy wearing a miniskirt. At no point is he ridiculed for it. Why is Beyblade better with gnc characters in 2013 than Hollywood in 2021? But I’m getting off track
Here are a few ideas that Beyraiderz introduced that never went anywhere (but should have). Spoilers for Wheelz and Raiderz ahead
Beyblade multiverse: If you’re not familiar with Wheelz and Raiderz (or just couldn’t understand the confusing ass finale of Wheelz. Don’t worry, it took me 3 watches), Beywheelz ends with Ryan succeeding in activating the portal. However, the portal is bigger than he thought. He expected to take less than 10 people. He took the whole city. So Team Estrella (plus Odin), decide to explore the new world they were transported to. The concept of a bey-verse should have been far more fleshed out. And it could have given us things like Hasbro’s other beyblade spinoffs (like XTS) anime appearences. Also, in Raiderz Ricky is stated to be from another universe, but they never followed up on that
Beys being rare/forgotten: In raiderz, there are a total of 6 beys in existence at the start of the series. By the end there are 7. Most people don’t know what beys are, and have no idea what the ruins of what used to be stadiums were used for. Rachel says that beys were common in ancient times, but that they fell into obscurity with time. Considering every beyblade series has beys be not only common knowledge, but the largest sport on Earth, this could have set Raiderz apart from the other series
Kaiser Grey/ Flame’s motivation: Let me get some lore out of the way. At some point in the past, Flame was the protector of the Raiderz world. Nature was controlled by six mythic beasts. Tempest was a villain who attempted to steal the power of the mythic beasts for himself, but was stopped by Flame. However, Flame died and the mythic beasts disappeared. Without the mythic beasts, a drought ensued and lasted long enough that Flame became a myth and there still wasn’t rain. In the present, 6 batters each came face to face with one of the mythic beasts. Battling in arenas would give them tokens, which would increase the power of the beasts until they could bring prosperity to the land again. Flame was revived as Kaiser Grey, but he was no longer a noble hero. He wanted to rule over the world with an iron fist, claiming that by giving people freedom, you allow them to abuse it (like Tempest did), and that it endangers everyone. The final battle is one of idelogies. Sacrificing saftey to achieve freedom or the other way around? This idea, handled well, could make Raiderz one of the best seasons with the villain alone
More use of bey magiic outside battles: Ever since the first season of the original series, we’ve had characters who would be considered superhuman in real life. The most common explanation for this is that they channel the power of their beys into their bodies. This was a theory at first but V-Force confirmed it was possible, when the villains state Tyson drew power from Dragoon allowing him to run at superhuman speeds (he outruns a car and a pack of dogs) G-Revolution gave us the inhumanly strong Moses/Crusher, the gravity-defying Mystel, and all those characters who grew wings for no reason. MFB had Ryuga’s teleportation, Zyro’s flaming hands, Wang Hu Zhong yeeting Da Xiang into a flying city, Tetsuya talking to crabs, and Gen can apparently breath underwater. Not to mention how impossibly durable all characters are. Burst has Lui’s hair, Delta’s hair, Aiger’s a super saiyan, several accounts of possesion, etc. You know what Raiderz had? A guy who could blow up boulders with his bare fist. There is no explaining Jin Ryu’s power as symbolic or anime logic. He straight up demolishes rocks by punching them (and has limited wind powers as well, making a kamehameha out of air). Like 99% of bey magic, it’s never explained but we can make the connection. Task can teleport/become invisible. Flame/Kaiser has a flaming eye. Raiderz could have elaborated so much on one of my favprite concepts in the franchise, but it didn’t
That all said, Raiderz was kinda fun. I just wish it could have done more
