It doesn’t seem too long ago that I used to pay 800 dollars a month to live in a one-bedroom apartment, but now I am paying 1,250 dollars a month”. Henderson seemed really concerned and mentioned, “The cost of living continues to go up, but my monthly income stays the same”. Henderson is not the only one worried about the high cost of living in Whatcom County. Lucas Lopez, a 24-year-old single man, moved here 4 years ago to attend college. “I work a job and that is slightly above minimum wage, and I still can not afford to pay my bills” Lopez said. Lopez mentioned that he worked almost full time and attended school in-person in Whatcom County. “Between school and work, I hardly have time for myself or my friends, it becomes really depressing. Especially when I am already struggling to pay for bills each month” Lopez exclaimed. “It is hard to try to be happy when I am constantly stressed out about whether or not I am working enough to pay rent. It really affects my education sometimes. How can I work on my school work when I am trying to pick up extra shifts at work to keep a roof over my head” said Lopez. When asked what examples of ways our community could improve, Lopez said “I think we could improve by increasing the working hourly wages so people could afford the high rent. The city could do a donation-based bus service, so people do not have to worry about the high cost of gas”.

Henderson and Lopez are just two people, out of the thousands of people, who are struggling to pay rent and afford basic needs in Whatcom County. The heart of Bellingham needs help. “We have limited resources to battle this disease, and I think somebody somewhere decided that this population of people wasn’t worth wasting resources on. That’s how it feels.”

The arrival of the coronavirus in the United States has intersected with the persistent problems associated with caring for the elderly, one of the country’s most vulnerable populations, especially as long-term care is often understaffed and underfunded.

As health experts urge nursing homes to plan ahead and take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus in their communities, some are cancelling bingo games and family dinners, encouraging relatives to take advantage of the ability to “visit” via Skype, and stocking up on the supplies they would need to combat an outbreak in their facilities.

“The data from China and from Italy seems to suggest that this virus disproportionately affects older adults. We’re looking at mortality rates for people over the age of 80 close to 15%,” says Dr. David Dosa, an associate professor of medicine at Brown University and a geriatrician who has researched nursing home infections, referencing a study of the outbreak in China published by the Journal of the American Medical Association. (While hard to assess, the overall coronavirus fatality rate is far lower — 3.4%, according to the World Health Organization on March 3.)

About 1.3 million Americans live in nursing homes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and more than half are over the age of 75.

“They do need to take it very seriously,” Dosa says. “I think that the Washington case is the proverbial canary in the coal mine.”

He said the virus, which causes a disease known as COVID-19, can spread quickly in nursing home settings, where people with existing medical conditions and compromised immune systems live in close proximity and depend on help for daily activities, including bathing, dressing and eating. On Friday, another nursing home and a senior living complex in Seattle each reported a case of coronavirus among their residents, the New York Times reported.

Brenda Chrystie says she was reassured by an email she received Monday from her father’s memory care facility in King County, the same county where the Life Care Center of Kirkland is located. Leaders at Aegis Living said they are disinfecting “high touch surfaces” daily, preparing a containment plan in case residents or staff members become infected, stocking up on both CDC-approved cleaning agents for the virus and enough food to feed staff and residents “for an extended period of time” if necessary, and canceling events for large groups. The facility has also asked anyone who traveled outside of the U.S. in the past 30 days to postpone their visit.

“For all of us who care for the elderly, the coronavirus is presenting an unprecedented challenge,” Kris Engskov, Aegis Living president, said in a statement on Thursday. “Over the last few days, we’ve put extraordinary protocols in place in all of our communities to ensure we were doing everything possible to protect our residents and staff from infection.”

“They’re having to ratchet it up and take it to another level and just hoping that all of us, the loved ones, don’t freak out and panic too much,” Chrystie says. “But who knows? Who knows how this is going to spread?”

She says she’s trying to protect her 80-year-old father, who has Alzheimer’s, from any of that panic because stress can be harmful to his health. “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know about the coronavirus,” she says. “And I’ll keep it that way.”

Bethany Retirement Living in Fargo, North Dakota has cancelled group activities, including bingo, music and group exercise as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of germs.

“A lot of times, bingo is passing around cards. Group exercise might be throwing around the same ball,” says Shawn Stuhaug, president and CEO of Bethany Retirement Living. “We’re just trying to be precautionary until we know more.”

The organization has started directing visitors through certain entrances to guarantee they pass a hand sanitizing station, and asking people not to visit if they have a fever or cough, have been on a cruise or have traveled to a country affected by the outbreak. The facility allows family members to Skype or FaceTime their loved ones if they can’t come in person.

Sandy Sidler, a 67-year-old retired teacher, visits her 91-year-old mother, who has been recovering from the flu, almost every day at Bethany, sitting beside her until she wakes up from her afternoon nap and keeping her company during supper. Sidler says she’s not worried about the spread of coronavirus yet, but she always uses hand sanitizer before entering her mother’s room.

Because there have not yet been any cases of coronavirus identified in North Dakota, Stuhaug says his biggest priority right now is preventing the spread of the seasonal flu, which is more likely to be deadly in an elderly population. “It’s just as important to pay attention to the flu,” he says. “Every year, I wish everybody would get this excited about the flu.”

I can no longer sit around and wait for a phone call to tell me my loved one has died.In Rhode Island — where officials have identified three “presumptive positive” cases of COVID-19 — former state senator Gloria Kennedy Fleck says she has been asking her 90-year-old mother’s nursing home, the West Shore Health Center in Warwick, R.I., for its contingency plan in case the virus spreads there. She has wondered if residents would be temporarily moved or separated if they test positive for the virus, but she hasn’t received a clear answer.

“The biggest concern is that no preparations are being made, and if and when it happens, then what? They’re just going to let them sit there in the petri dish?” she says. “I’m not trying to be an alarmist. We have to take precautions. There has to be a plan.”

On Thursday, she spoke with an administrator who told her plans are underway. Representatives from the West Shore Health Center directed inquiries from TIME to Scott Fraser, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Health Care Association, who said the nursing home was screening visitors, had put up signs asking them not to enter if they’re ill and would be following its existing contingency plans for seasonal flu and norovirus outbreaks, but he could not elaborate on what those plans entail.

“We’re following state guidelines and CDC guidelines, and we’re following them very closely because obviously the residents in all our homes are some of the most vulnerable,” he said.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released guidelines last week aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19 in nursing homes, asking facilities to screen visitors for symptoms such as a cough, fever and sore throat and for international travel to restricted countries within 14 days. Any health care workers who develop symptoms on the job should stop work, put on a face mask and self-quarantine at home, the guidelines say.

Richard Mollot, executive director of the Long Term Care Community Coalition, says he’s advising families to ask more questions of the facilities housing their elderly relatives. “We’re telling people, ‘Look to see, is your nursing home implementing better practices, doing more cleaning, ensuring that everyone is on board with hand washing,’” he says. “I would ask the administrator, ‘Are you prepared for what is going to come?’”

Fleck — who brings her mother lemon-filled donuts and Hershey’s kisses each time she visits — says she worries about exactly that. Last month, healthcare workers protested at the Rhode Island state house over under-staffed nursing homes in the state, and Fleck worries staffing levels will worsen because of COVID-19.

In Washington state, the leader of the union representing home care and nursing home workers says that’s already happening. Sterling Harders, president of the SEIU 775, says the outbreak is “making the chronic understaffing in nursing homes even worse,” as more workers call in sick.

Sherylon Hughes — a direct caregiver at the North Cascades Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bellingham, Wash., — says at the start of their shift, workers are now required to report to the nurse on duty to have their temperature checked and fill out a short questionnaire about whether they’ve come in contact with anyone who is potentially infected.

“Everyone is just really concerned,” Hughes says. “There’s a lot of frustration among some of the workers. We feel like the people who are in charge haven’t really come up with a plan for what we are supposed to do.”

She and her coworkers have wondered what would happen if someone at her nursing home tests positive for the coronavirus. Will the facility shut down? Will all the workers be tested? Will they have to pay for it themselves?

“I’m very concerned about the health care workers, the people who are on the front lines,” says Hughes, who makes about $17 an hour. “The potential loss of livelihood is devastating, especially for caregivers. We do not make very much money at all, and none of us can afford to miss work for any extended period of time, and very few of us have healthcare that’s affordable.”

At a press conference on Friday, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said the state would cover the cost of the test for anyone who does not have insurance. As officials work to contain the spread of the virus, he said the state would dedicate assistance specifically to long-term care facilities. “We know that the first potential victims of this virus are elderly and those who are medically compromised,” he said. “We are standing up a separate incident command post in the structure to specifically give assistance to long-term care facilities, both to help them prevent infection from entering the facilities and to help them deal ith it in the event that that happens.”

But questions linger for many of the Life Care Center relatives, who on Thursday expressed their frustration with a lack of communication, demanding clear guidance on when their relatives would be tested for the virus and asking to speak with CDC health officials and to relocate healthy residents to a different facility.

King County Executive Dow Constantine said Friday that the Life Care Center has not been shut down or evacuated because the more than 60 residents remaining there require 24-hour medical care, and there were no hospitals or nursing homes with the capacity to take them in. “This is, for many of the residents, the best place that they can be — those who are asymptomatic but have these health conditions that have to be attended to in a 24-hour care facility,” he said.

Connolly’s father-in-law is one of those residents, but he is still seeking more answers. Constantine said all Life Care Center residents and staff members will be tested for COVID-19 now that there is increased testing capacity at the University of Washington.

On Saturday, Connolly said his father-in-law, who has not been showing symptoms for coronavirus, had not yet been tested.

“Still no one has reached out to us,” Connolly said in a text to TIME. “Still we are in the dark.”

Discovering a hidden gem in London is always a great buzz. It gives you a sense of really having lived in the city and a slight smugness that comes from knowing something that not many other people do. I made one such discovery recently when I called in to the Bellingham Bowling Club on a sunny midweek evening.

Tucked away behind a row of houses on Bellingham Road, this thriving community asset boasts an impressive clubhouse with two large halls, a kitchen and a well-stocked bar. Outside, a spectators’ balcony overlooks two immaculate, full-sized bowling greens, with fantastic views of the city in the distance.

So well hidden is the Bellingham Bowling Club that I’m told some of the residents living on the street are unaware that it exists.

“I live about a five-minute walk around the corner and when I come here, I feel like I’m on holiday,” club president Richard Morrison tells me. “It’s so relaxing, with beautiful views.

“I was at a meeting here last night; we try to open the facilities up to the community and there was a scouts’ AGM taking place. We just sat out here and watched the sun go down, and all the lights of London twinkled on. It’s just wonderful.”

Sitting on the balcony chatting to Richard and some of the other club members as a friendly match is played out on the green below, it’s easy to see what he means. The club is an oasis of calm, the perfect setting in which to while away a long summer’s evening.

Ray Bauer moved to the area last May and after googling local bowling clubs, he joined Bellingham one month later.

“This place has been an absolute godsend,” he says. “I love the game – I’ve heard it said that it takes five minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. The facilities here are fantastic and we’ve got great people like these guys here and others.”

Ray joined the club during a difficult period in his life. His marriage had broken down and being new to the area, he didn’t know anyone. At the bowling club he discovered a passion for the game and what he describes as a “family of friends”.

“Over the past couple of years I had suffered terribly with depression and this place has been such a lifesaver,” he says.

“There are widowers here as well as other isolated people or elderly people who aren’t quite ready to throw in the towel yet. We’ve got people here in their 90s still playing bowls, as well as riding fast motorbikes,” he laughs.

“We’ve got one 90 year old who does,” Richard confirms. “He’s president of the Bexleyheath motorbike club, I think it is. He’s still riding his Suzuki 650 and plays bowls.”

The bowling club was founded in May 1912, when Henry Forster (later Lord Forster), then MP for Sevenoaks, cast the first jack and bowled two bowls to officially open it.

Forster was born in Southend Hall, which once stood on the corner of Bromley Road and Whitefoot Lane. He donated the land that is now the Forster Memorial Park to the public in memory of his sons, Alfred and John, who were killed in World War One.

More than a century later, the bowling club is still going strong – but the image of bowls as a game for well-heeled retired people is changing. Bellingham has a number of young players such as talented 15-year-old Arun Kairon, who had just got through to the Kent semi-finals the night before I visited.

“It is, as Ray says, like a family here,” Richard says. “But we’re very keen to welcome new people. Bowls is enjoyed by people of all ages – my grandchildren who are nine and 11 absolutely love it here.”

Paul Buck is the club’s director and a bit of a dab hand on the bowling green. He’s been playing at Bellingham for 13 years and says it is open to people of all abilities.

“There are different levels,” he says. “You can play in the nationals, which is Bowls England competitions. There are also Kent competitions and then there’s the local competitions.

“We’re in a league called the PCL, then you’ve got another one on a Thursday night called the North West Kent. There are so many aspects to what you can get involved in.”

For many people though, it’s as much about the social side as the sport.

“It’s very difficult to get people to come up here but once they’re through the door, they love it,” Paul says.

“I think if you’re welcoming to people when they first come, they’re going to want to come back. You go to some clubs and they can be a little bit funny about new people coming through the door.

“We’ve had couples where one of them has sadly passed away and it offers a refuge for the remaining partner. It’s a reason for them to get out of bed in the morning. Loneliness is a killer, and it’s great because they come and socialise rather than be sitting indoors. It keeps them going.”

The club has a real community feel to it and members muck in and help wherever they can. All the work is done by volunteers and only the guy who cuts the grass gets paid. The management committee takes care of everything, including the running of the bar, the food, the finance, the grounds and the entertainment.

The club has regular open days for the public as well as hosting barbecues in the summer and once a month, locals can tuck into a Sunday roast at a very reasonable price. During the winter they play short mat bowls indoors, as well as organising cards sessions and darts tournaments.

Then from March through to the first week of October, the greens are in full use from 10am until nightfall and beyond. “We’ve actually had candlelit bowls when it gets dark,” Paul says.

The club has over 70 members and in a bid to attract a more diverse membership and increase the number of female players, they have forged partnerships with the local branch of the WI, as well as a newly formed residents’ association in the area.

Paul encourages anyone who fancies a game to come along. “There’s nothing better than going out there, having a bit of exercise with the sun on your back and then coming up afterwards and offering to buy your opponent a drink or a cup of tea.”

The Leopold has long been a well-known retirement community, and its Crystal Ballroom, with its ivory finishes and navy velvet drapes, has seen many a gala and wedding reception under its famous chandeliers. Recent changes and renovations have turned the property back to its roots - hospitality in the heart of Bellingham.

“At the time of construction and in the decade that followed, New Whatcom (including such of the downtown district of the present City of Bellingham) experienced extensive growth and prosperity, due in large part to the development of the timber, fishing, and coal industries.” (source)

Originally built in 1899 by Captain Byron, the building was called the Byron Hotel. It was later renamed the Leopold after Leopold Schmidt, a brewmaster who bought the property in 1910 as he was expanding his Tumwater-based brewing business into Bellingham. Plenty of changes have happened to the property over the course of a century: one remaining part today is actually a 1929 addition, and much of the structure was demolished in 1967.

The 1982 nomination form adding this property to the National History Registry describes the work leading up to that time:

“The lobby area and rest room facilities below had all the decorative tile work uncovered. Hand painted tile in many shapes and patterns now graces the floors, walls, interior fountain, and stairways as it did when the structure was first built. The main ballroom and chandelier dining room are illuminated by the original crystal chandeliers, and recent painting and wallpapering have been done with special attention to the original decor.” (source)

During its tenure as a hotel, the property played host to such notaries as William Howard Taft, Richard Byrd, William Jennings Bryan, Billy Sunday, and Clark Gable.

The owners of the Leopold caused plenty of buzz late last year when they announced that the retirement living business would be closing its doors, and in the spring when we learned the property would be renovated into a 31-room hotel and 61-unit apartment complex.

While the business move to displace dozens of elderly residents was controversial, the owners have made efforts to connect with the community throughout the process of transitioning the property. Local art is featured in the rooms, and the developers purchased a significant amount of their materials from local suppliers like Mt Baker Plywood, Judd & Black, and The Greenhouse.

The new owners announced on the hotel blog that the ground floor will be leased out to a business to continue its use as an event space and remodel the dining facilities into a restaurant.

Pastor, homeless advocate Jim Stender dies at 67

St. Andrew Lutheran Church lost its leader, the affable Rev. Jim Stender. Described as a warm, thoughtful man who radiated love, he was a stalwart advocate for the homeless and disadvantaged.

Stender, who hailed from Bellingham, became pastor of the Orchards-area church in 1998. He died Thursday night of a heart attack. He was 67. He is survived by his wife, Mary Stender, three children and four grandchildren.

A vigil was announced late Friday afternoon and — despite the wintry weather forecasted — people packed the church a few hours later to remember Stender. Besides congregants and members of other churches, there were staff and board members from Share and Council for the Homeless, a testament to Stender’s deep involvement in issues of homelessness and affordable housing.

“What a gift to have experienced such an incredible person of faith,” said the Rev. Adrienne Strehlow, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in the Vancouver Heights area. “For me, he was a mentor, he was a pastor, he was a friend and a colleague and he was a father figure. … I learned how to be a pastor from him.”

Strehlow said she’s known the Stenders for a couple of decades, and St. Andrew was her hometown congregation.

“The number of lives he touched just by mentoring future pastors is huge,” she said. “If I could be half the pastor he was, I would be pleased.”

The love and thoughtfulness he showed his congregation he also showed the community, she said. He saw a need to serve people experiencing homelessness “not just in words that are pretty but actions that are powerful,” Strehlow said.

Stender was instrumental in getting a Winter Hospitality Overflow shelter established at his church. When the program began 16 years ago, it rotated to a different church every week, which was difficult for homeless clients. Stender volunteered his church to be one of two regular sites. It has a gym, showers and is located on a bus line, so it made sense. Every year, between the beginning of November and the end of March, St. Andrew shelters families and women.

In a 2017 Columbian article, Stender said the WHO was a miracle: “We need to have between 1,300 and 1,500 volunteers to pull this off. … I think it shows the heart of the community.”

Stender led a group of local Lutheran churches in building a Habitat for Humanity home that was completed in 2003. And for the last five years, Stender was a Share board member.

“He was a leader on our board. People looked to him for his opinion,” said Diane McWithey, executive director of the nonprofit. “He was always so warm.”

McWithey remembered how, when there was pushback about the original concept of a day center for the homeless, Stender helped her weather the criticism. Stender always considered the perspective of Share’s homeless clients, asking how any potential changes would benefit those served by the nonprofit, McWithey said.

The board met recently, so the news of Stender’s death was a shock.

The Rev. Gary Lazzeroni of St. Joseph and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic churches had exchanged emails with Stender on Thursday, arranging a breakfast get-together. The pair of friends were going to catch up and talk about Stender’s retirement plans.

“Knowing Jim was a real privilege. He was such a talented pastor on so many levels. … His care for the people of St. Andrew was palpable,” Lazzeroni said. “I’ll miss him a lot.”

One of his favorite memories is when their churches joined forces to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. There was prayer and music at St. Andrew, and later the two had a conversation before a few hundred at St. Joseph, discussing how the Catholic and Lutheran traditions had enriched each of their faiths.

The two met several years ago and were part of an interfaith clergy group. They worked on opening the aforementioned day center, which eventually landed at Friends of the Carpenter and has since evolved into the Vancouver Navigation Center in central Vancouver.

St. Andrew member Denny Scott worked closely with Stender on getting the faith community more involved in tackling homelessness and affordable housing. Forums and discussions eventually led to the creation of Faith Partners for Housing. Scott said working with homeless people was part of Stender’s DNA.

“I found that there was always a message for me in his sermons to help me grow as a humanitarian and as a Christian who was called upon to act out faith,” Scott said. “I think as a pastor, one of his huge strengths was to empower others.”

Even if he was busy working on a sermon, Stender would welcome people into his office for encouragement and counsel. He liked to sing loud on Sundays, regardless of whether he was in key.

Stender planned to retire at the end of June, aiming to spend more time with his family, and sent the congregation a letter explaining the transition. Scott said a church committee had already been working for a few months on the process of finding a new pastor when Stender died.

St. Andrew is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Its Southwest Washington Synod will supply an interim pastor.

Strehlow plans to speak at Stender’s memorial service, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at St. Andrew, 5607 N.E. Gher Road, Vancouver. She reflected on the legacy Stender left behind.

“Jim Stender was a person who was completely grounded in his faith in Christ,” she said. “The way that we can honor him is to continue sharing that love and building that legacy.”

A search was underway Wednesday night for a man who allegedly fatally shot his parents at a retirement home in Pennsylvania.

The slayings occurred soon after he shot and wounded his ex-wife outside her home after learning that their divorce had become final, authorities said.

Authorities identified the suspect as Bruce Rogal, 59, of Glenmoore. He was being sought on charges of homicide and atempted homicide, they said.

Rogal was said to be driving a 2002 Honda Odyssey with Pennsylvania license plate ENN3549, Fox 29 of Philadelphia reported.

The shooting occurred at the Bellingham Nursing Home near West Chester. Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said authorities believe Rogal was set off after finding out that his divorce had become final, the station reported.

At an evening news conference, Hogan told reporters that Rogal drove to his ex-wife’s home around 5:30 p.m. and shot her while she was changing the oil in her car, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Then Rogal went to the retirement home in East Goshen Township, near West Chester and shot his parents inside their apartment. Both victims, William and Nancy Rogal, were in their late 80s, according to authorities.

After the shooting was reported, police placed the retirement home on lockdown according to WCAU-TV.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) tweeted that agents were “responding to a shooting at a retirement community in West Chester, Pa.”

Residents were allowed back into their homes as of 10 p.m., the Inquirer reported.

Rogal had previous run-ins with law enforcement, the newspaper reported. Court records show he pleaded guilty to a trespassing charge in Chester County in 2017, but was acquitted in a harassment case two years earlier, the Inquirer reported.
