Hi! I just watched the episode your url comes from... cool!

Also, I have a question: Is Rodney in the Deity AU? What's he up to? He's kind of a background character in the show, honestly, even though I think he's interesting enough to have shown up way more than he did.

I also just watched the episode where LOVEMUFFIN crashes that dancing show Candace and Jeremy were on... and I've gotta say, maybe it should've been Can't Dance Jeremy, since apparently he can't dance? But Ferb can. Just call him Can Dance Fletcher.

Anyways, in that episode we get the epic scene where Heinz and Rodney accidentally dance together-I think that's pretty funny, and I wish it were more of a running gag, though it doesn't seem to come up again.

The thought: "I need to rewatch the entirety of Phineas and Ferb three times?? And I'm only half-way through my first re-watch" crossed my mind just a few minutes ago. It sounds odd but I'd imagine it's a common sentiment among fanfic 'rewrites'... so, relatable moment? Let me know.

PPS: I wrote this entire letter and only just realized I've been doing a 'doofenshmirtz voice' for it in my head the whole time so... that's. Interesting. Movies Shot in Real Time

The current movie under review is High Noon, directed by Fred Zinnemann, and is famous for using “real time” filming to build the tension of a shoot out in an old west town. Real time means that time in the movie is equivalent to time for the audience without time jumps forward or back in time. There are no montages or apparent points when time freezes so that the characters can build skills or figure things out. The people on film have to figure out what is happening in the same amount of time as the audience. There have been some variations to the concept, but the films listed are dripping with intensity because they challenge the audience to adjust with the situation, just like the characters. Here are five excellent films that employ real time aspects to crank up the suspense:

Rope (1948)

One of the best Hitchcock films that did somehow did not make it on the AFI list, Rope is the story of two academics who discuss how they would commit the perfect murder while at a party. They decide how they would do it and actually commit the crime. It doesn’t seem like it would be very suspenseful because the audience hears the entire plan and knows what is coming. The murderers do not, however, see all the actions of the people around them so there is constant worry as things don’t go to plan. The movie is thoughtful and suspenseful, but at times it drags and does not have Hitchcock’s expected thrills. Still a fantastic film and well worth checking out.

The Set-Up (1949)

This is a very interesting use of real time because it is the story of an aged boxer and his manager dealing with the mafia. The boxer has been losing all of his fights and is strongly considering retirement so his manager takes the opportunity to bet money on the fight. He also gives a tip to the mafia that his fighter will take a dive...but he doesn’t tell the boxer so he doesn’t have to give up a cut of the winnings. Well, things don’t go as planned, and the audience can see it coming while watching the boxer thinking he is doing well, the manager being supportive at first and terrified as the fight continues, and the mafia members who realize they got a bad tip and considering what to do about it. The movie gets more and more intense as it continues and I love it.

High Noon (1952)

This is our current movie under review and it sticks to the real time strategy better than any other that I know. The movie is 85 minutes long and covers about 75 minutes of real time (leaving time for credits). It starts with a retiring marshal who is about to leave town with his young bride. He hears that an outlaw who just got out of town is coming in on the noon train. The outlaw will shoot up the town if the marshal isn't there to stop him and his gang. All the town is afraid and he can’t round up a posse, his wife is waiting for him and he could leave, but his sense of duty and honor is demanding he stay even though he would most likely die. His chances of survival get worse as the movie continues and it does not end as expected considering it is a 50s western. An American classic and well worth watching.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

In more recent years, Al Pacino has not been picking the best films and doing many projects for money like Oceans’ 13 (2007) and Jack and Jill (2011). Many of my teenage students don’t know of his famous roles like in The Godfather (1972), Serpico (1973), The Godfather Part 2 (1974), Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and Scarface (1983). Of these films, the least well know according to the lack of audience ratings is Dog Day Afternoon, yet it is likely the most thrilling (even out of that amazing list of movies). It is directed by Sidney Lumet, who made a few real time movies, and tells the story of a bank robbery by first time robbers and all of the things that don’t go according to plan. The audience doesn’t have the threat of death or arrest looming, so we gasp at the mistakes and generally poor decisions. This movie really could not be done in any other way than in real time, and the realistic direction of events in a poorly planned robbery with new guys is perfect. Fantastically intense film.

Run Lola Run (1998)

This is not the kind of movie that I normally cover as it is in the vein of German experimentalism with a punk attitude that plays with time. The AFI list, which I have spent the last 2 years covering, is generally made up of Hollywood classic film. This film, however, is nothing like that and absolutely fantastic, possibly one of the best movies ever made from any country. It is in German with English subtitles and tells the story of Lola trying to stop her boyfriend from committing a robbery that will get him killed. We go through her race against 30 minutes of real time three times as she makes different decisions each time. It is absolutely riveting to see what happens in real time as she makes her decisions. This is a ground breaking film and well worth experiencing, even if you have a hard time with subtitles. There is not a lot of dialogue and, as the title suggests, there is constant movement by the lead actress. It is so well known and respected that both The Simpsons and Phineas and Ferb based episodes on the plot. Truly innovative and a superior film.

There are some other examples like 12 Angry Men that happen to have a real time feel while not having an actual ticking clock, but these real time countdown films really use the style to its full potential. Are there any other real time movies that are filmed in this way not listed above? I really like this style and am curious to watch more.
