PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE in which haneul flies to japan for chuseok on his own
knowing what seojun's plans for chuseok were, he didn't really want to spend time by himself in their shared apartment. and he didn't want to burden seojun's family with his presence during the holiday either, so he booked tickets to tokyo to try to unwind away from everything.
of course, he's still practicing when he can, mostly not wanting to relax too much and forget all muscle memory of dances so he wakes up early to go down to the studio he had found down the street from his hotel room and dances in the morning before he goes to do touristy things.
most of his days are spent finding specific places to eat that he had found on the internet, and wandering the areas between those when he's just killing time.
he finds a matcha cafe and spends way too much money there but he wanted to try everything he could on their menu.
he found the capybara cafe, and almost cried when one of them cuddled up to him. he took way too many pictures that day.
he even went to disneyland on his own, thinking it would be a good way to help heal his inner child. he had grown up focused on his future singing career and hadn't really been granted the time to do anything like this. so he enjoyed it, probably spending way too much money.
it's okay though, because his hotel had free breakfast every morning and there was an 24 hour onsen in the hotel as well. he could rest his feet after dancing in the morning and walking for hours all day.
when it comes time to board the plane back to seoul, haneul is admittedly a bit disappointed. it had felt nice, to go somewhere where no one knew who he was. where he didn't have to pretend to be happy just so that people didn't worry.
part of him wanted to run away, hide somewhere in tokyo forever and never turn back. he entertained the idea for a little bit, imagining if he just left his entire life behind and started brand new.
but he knew he couldn't. there were things he needed to do first, and he knew that those things were important.
and seojun was in seoul. or he would be, once they both returned to their shared apartment. and that was important enough to him that he knew he couldn't stay in japan.
so he says goodbye to tokyo, and watches with anticipation out the window for his return to seoul. it would be worth it. hopefully.
(and if not, he could always run away next time.)

be:chuseok2023, namu's adventures!
food tw, tw: food.
holidays are rather important to namu and his family, which is why they're always sure to partake in any holiday given. so, of course, his family partakes in chuseok and all of the traditions that go along with it. they do all the cooking, they partake in charye and beolcho. they even exchange gifts with one another, as well as giving gifts to their friends because it's kind of just all of their love languages. however, the traditions and the big meal is probably something that's most important to the family, simply because of getting to spend time together as a family, as well as remember and celebrate their ancestors, the family that's no longer with them. namu and his family are even sure to wear hanbok as well, while partaking in their festivities.

— HEY WANNABES, IT'S ALMOST TIME FOR CHUSEOK!
also known as hangawi (한가위) or korean thanksgiving, chuseok (추석) is the most known and celebrated south korean holiday. it is celebrated on a full moon on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, and this year, this falls on the period of 28-30 of september. chuseok day is on september 29th.
it is tradition for people to go back to their hometowns and spend time with their families - most use this time to visit and tidy up the graves of loved ones or to host memorial services at home. of course, since it is a holiday that celebrates a bountiful harvest, family feasts with traditional korean food are also common!
as a reminder, trainees have no mandatory classes scheduled during national holidays (chuseok day), though the buildings will remain open for anyone who wishes to practice independently. there is no penalty for returning home to visit family at that time.
have a happy chuseok!
this mini-event is for all muses and will run until october 11 at 11:59pm. any threads or solos posted after the deadline will not count toward points. please send in your points submission before this deadline.
please use the hashtag #BE:CHUSEOK2023 for all posts relating to this event.
chuseok is an important time for south koreans, and as such, we want to celebrate it properly, by encouraging more character building and creativity.
FOR +3 POINTS IN PERFORMANCE OR ANCILLARY SKILLS, you can post one of the following:
a moodboard or other graphic edit about your character enjoying the festivities or about their family
a playlist of at least 5 songs that represents fall or that your character’s family would enjoy during the festivities
a headcanon or solo of your muse during this or any previous chuseok period! there is no word count for this, and it can be about just anything at all: does your character go home every year for chuseok, or will they stay in seoul and make use of the empty training rooms? do they help with cooking or does their family order in? do they participate in the more religious aspects of the holiday? do they enjoy wearing a hanbok? and so on!
additional points can be claimed the more you write or create; the moodboard or playlist options can be claimed once for +3 points each, meanwhile you can write additional solos or headcanons and claim +3 points up to two times. the maximum amount of points earned from this mini-event is 12 points.
here, here and here are some good resources for you to learn more about the holiday!
when you’ve completed all options that you’d like to participate in, please send the following form to our points submission blog:

deul goes home to mokpo.
when deul arrived at his parents' home his mother greeted him with a big hug as she always did. "deul-ah, i'm so happy you could make it." she said. "you've gotten so tall." she said. she always said that. deul wasn't sure if he was actually that tall or if she just thought he was tall because she still thought of him as the teenage boy who had left to go train to be an idol. "your room is just how you left it, sweetie." his mother continued beckoning him to come in. "when you get changed let me know."
deul had bought a new hanbok for the occassion because he knew that his mother liked to see him dress up. he'd picked it for the soft blush pink color, which he knew complimented his features. he changed into the new hanbok looking around his childhood room quietly. he had shared it with both his brothers at one point in time but he'd spent far more time alone in this room thanks to the difference in age between himself and his brothers. shaking himself out of his almost melancholy thoughts he headed back out to the living room where he knew his parents and older brothers would be making sure they had enough offerings for their visit to the tomb.
his father noted his presence first and smiled widely. "you look sharp." he said brightly. deul smiled back. his father said as much every year but it was always nice to hear no matter how many previous times it had been reiterated. his father handed him one of the baskets.
haeoreum spoke up next. "what did you do with my kid brother, huh? you look like an adult now." deul just laughed. with both haeoreum and eutteum being in ilsan and ansan respectively deul got to see them much more often than he did his parents so he knew that his eldest brother was only teasing him.
eutteum snorted from where he was standing by their mom. "you just saw deul last week, hyung." he said, with an unimpressed tone. "but the way you talk people would think you hadn't seen him in ages."
"a week is an age." haeoreum shot back. "especially when you're old like me."
"you're not even thirty yet." eutteum said. "i think you just have a bad memory."
"are you kids staying the night? i wish you would, trying to catch the train might be tight." his mother spoke up, gently breaking up the playful bickering match.
"i planned on taking the first train tomorrow." deul said. haeoreum and eutteum echoed the sentiment. all three of them knew that their mother would've insisted they stay the night anyway even if they had planned on going home initially.
chuseok always went the same way. they went to the family tomb where they met up with their cousins and made some offerings to their ancestors before returning home with cousins in tow. then they all would try to squeeze into his parents' small kitchen to help cook dinner. after dinner they'd all help clean up and their mother would insist it was too late for them to go back home so they'd all find some way to spend the night.
it was a tight squeeze when they had been children but now that all of them were adults trying to accomodate twelve people had gotten more than a little bit tougher. but they always knew that their mother would find a way to do it.

chuseok, 2023
the first thing nayoung does on chuseok day is speak to her father. it would be early in the morning, if not for her training schedules that have her awake even earlier.
he calls first, the great difference in timezones always making it a little difficult to coordinate conversation. her dad is still back in the united states pursuing his own music career; he tells her he would've come to visit if her mother would've allowed it. nayoung doesn't know if that's true, but she'd honestly rather him not, than he and her mother fight on one of the most important days of the year.
he asks her about training, and the conversation is relatively shallow, nayoung not willing to open up about much and not having much to open up about anyway. he tells her he loves her and hangs up; she tells him she loves him too, and she does, even if it sounds empty when she says it.
her grandparents carry the rest of the celebrations. she and her mother join them to visit the tomb of their ancestors. they tell stories about their parents, and their siblings that have now passed on, and nayoung doesn't pay as much attention as she should. she loves her grandparents, at the very least, and she appreciates her ancestors, at the very least, for making her grandparents the wonderful people they are.
she isn't sure how her mother ended up so awful with the parents she had, but nayoung isn't much for psychoanalysis; that's not her job.
when it comes to chuseok dinner, they eat early, and nayoung provides a fruit basket for her grandparents. the meal is extravagant even for the four of them, with far too much food, but her grandmother reveals that they intends to bring some to some of the less fortunate children they teach in the acting lessons they give.
it's very in character for them. they are incredibly kind people, and sometimes, nayoung wonders if they're disappointed in her for being so cold.
she doesn't think about it for long, though. the food is delicious, and she goes to sleep early with a full stomach, knowing chuseok was a nice break from training, but she'll get right back to it the next day.

chuseok 2023
this time of year always sucks.
he never feels more alone in this world than he does on family-oriented holidays. all of his friends have somewhere better to be, and better people to be with. this year, when people ask him about his chuseok plans, he simply says he's not planning on going home. some of them invite him to join theirs, and he politely declines.
he appreciates it, but something about intruding on another person's family celebration feels strange to him, even if they welcome him with open arms. maybe it's just painful: a reminder of the life he could've had, but didn't. he hopes there's some other universe where he does, and that joomi grows up happy and needs less therapy.
this joomi, though, cut his family off for good on seollal of this year. he's surrounded by more friends than ever, and yet with chuseok still comes a certain, undeniable feeling of loneliness.
he fills it a little. he's the one that suggests to the dead calm boys that they do something for chuseok, if everyone has time. everyone agrees, kian naturally jumping at the opportunity to bring everyone food. it's after joomi's studio delta callback; he has no idea how he'll feel then, or if he'll have something to celebrate. if he wants to look at it optimistically, he'll have something to celebrate no matter what: either getting a contract or getting to stay with the band.
his callback passes, but the feeling of anxiety that comes with it doesn't quite. he still worries, and worries, about what he'll do if they studio delta want him to join their company, and about what he might lose and what he might gain.
( tw: death, brief mention of abuse )
still, chuseok comes. joomi works the first day of celebrations to try and keep his mind off of his family, and lackthereof. some insane part of him wonders, for a split second, what would happen if he did go back. maybe his mother would hug him, and his dad would give him a new bruise he'd have to cover with makeup, just like old times.
he doesn't do that, though. the morning of chuseok, he tries to write songs, to some success. that's the good thing about feeling emotional: sometimes you can pour it all out into a notebook.
by the afternoon, he feels a little lighter, but still heavy. he does something he's done ever since moving to seoul: he goes to one of the local gravesites well after most families have paid respects to their ancestors, and he walks among them.
you can always tell the difference; between the graves that were visited and the ones that weren't. some look pristine, cleared of dirt and weeds, sometimes even with an offering. others look like they've been untouched by human hands for decades; abandoned and forgotten.
joomi knows what that feels like, so he's made it his tradition to go in the evenings and weed around the graves that received little attention earlier in the day, if any at all. he wonders what happened to the people that loved the ones laid to rest here. maybe they moved away, or already passed themselves. maybe the ancestor was a horrific human being, and no one wanted to associate with them following their death.
joomi does't know, but somehow, it makes him feel a little sad that even those spirits are alone on days like this. joomi doesn't know what he believes, as far as religions go, but he thinks there's something. he thinks it would be nice if, after death, there isn't a hell, and instead, there's the opportunity to be better than you were in life. maybe then, when you die, even your worst ancestors will greet you with an apology for how they treated you in life.
or maybe that's just wishful thinking on his part. either way, he removes the weeds, and at each gravesite, pauses, and says, or thinks, some variation of i know i'm not the person you want to see, but i'm someone, and i'm here to visit you. i hope you're resting well.
he doesn't know if it makes him feel better or not. when he leaves, he feels somber, but maybe, a little less alone; like they are all still connected somehow, just by walking the same earth together, even in different lifetimes.
he knows he's probably not supposed to think about death on chuseok, but he does. he wonders if, when he's dead and buried, there will be anyone to pay their respects to him. he doesn't have any siblings; god forbid his parents procreate again. he doubts he will ever have any children, especially by blood. whose ancestor will he be, then? maybe he really will just be another overgrown grave.
there's still time; he hopes so, anyway. he doesn't know about being an ancestor, but he still has time, to build relationships and love people and be loved in return. he hopes, if the world is still spinning 100 years from now, someone will greet his spirit on days like this.
love. that's what he feels on sunday, when he meets up with his friends from the band for their own celebration. they eat too much and laugh too much and for a while, joomi doesn't feel alone at all. it feels bittersweet though: he has this, but he might give it up to become a kpop trainee, of all things.
or maybe not. even if he can't play music with the band anymore, maybe that's not what's most important. maybe it's eating japchae with his friends on a sunday night and nearly choking because one of them did something stupid.
it's funny, how it's only been a few months of them officially being a band, but it feels like...family, almost; like he's supposed to be with them. like something finally went his way when he managed to bring them all together. he knows, if he died tomorrow, that these people would make sure his gravesite wasn't overgrown by weeds every chuseok, even if they weren't really family.
it's more than he ever thought he'd get. it's more than enough.

BE:CHUSEOK2023:   present.   /   wc:  387. tw: parental death, grief.
chaeyeon made herself treat the days off she'd been given as an actual break; she didn't book a single hairdressing client, not so much as a trim. the consequences of that, however, have turned out to be stressful in their own way.
it's the first time in a long time, long before she signed with sr media, long before she graduated school, that she's spent so much time in the house. after a couple of waking hours, she can't stand being in her room anymore. it's a mess, everything is, except for her hair supplies bag & the duffel bag she takes back and forth from training. so, chaeyeon goes downstairs and, surprising everybody including herself, decides to try.
her grandmother is immediately suspicious, but she relents, and lets chaeyeon help her out in the kitchen. of course, she doesn't let her near anything that requires a knife. she's primarily relegated to mixing things, setting timers on her phone, and swapping out her grandmother's old tapes in the once-state of the art tape-cd-radio hybrid monstrosity that she insists on keeping. her grandfather is lying down, she says. he hasn't been well recently, you know. chaeyeon nods, as if she does.
the food tastes good. a miracle, her grandfather says, if chaeyeon was in the kitchen. the bitter taste of guilt coats her mouth when she bites into her songpyeon, but chaeyeon smiles. they tease her, and they chat, and they even bring up old memories of her mother as a child. they talk about graves they're too old to tend to the way they wish they could, but that they'll visit tomorrow. the fat, middle part of her parents' urns in the old fashioned glass case catch the light and throw it across the table in twin beams of light, contributing to the celebrations with a shining silence.
when they run out of niceties, they join them in that silence for a long time.
"do you want a beer?"
"i'd love one."
the wheaty cold bubbles on her tongue invigorate chaeyeon, who then and there, promises (lies) to herself and says she'll be truthful from now on. her grandmother seems to already know she has something to say. she looks at her, expectant.
"i have something i need to tell you."
chaeyeon clears her throat, and begins.
