By • Olalekan Fagbade APC flagbearers name removed as INEC releases ammended Candidates list ahead of Guber Election The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released amended lists of candidates for Bayelsa and Imo governorship elections. According to the amended list uploaded on the commission’s website on Tuesday, the name of Timipre Sylva and his ruining mate, Joshua Maciver of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were not included for Bayelsa election. The list was signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, The News Agency of Nigeria reports (NAN) reports that the column for the names of APC candidate and his ruining mate were left blank with “court order” remarks on it. Also for Imo, the commission included the names of Uchechukwu Ishiodu as governorship candidate and Ahumbe Chiazor as the running mate, for Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for the state election. Oriaran-Anthony, in the amended document, explained that the action of the commission was in obedience to court orders on the lists, served on the commission. She recalled that the commission published the final list of candidates for 2023 BayelsaState Governorship Election on June 9 in accordance with the provision of Section 32 of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Election. She said that after the said publication, the commission was served with an order of court in respect of the nomination of candidate of the APC for Bayelsa governorship election. “By virtue of the provision of Section 287 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Commission is bound to enforce the orders of court on nomination of candidates by political parties in the state. “The Amended list of candidates in respect of the 2023 Bayelsa State governorship election is hereby amended pursuant to the orders of oourt served on the commission,” Oriaran-Anthony said. Also for Imo, Oriaran-Anthony also recalled that INEC published the final list of candidates for the state governorship election June 9 in accordance with the provision of Section 32 of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Election. “After the said publication, the Commission was served with an Order of Court for the inclusion of the PRP and its candidate on the list of candidates for the 2023 Imo State governorship election. “By virtue of the provision of Section 287 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the commission is bound to enforce the orders of court on nomination of candidates by political parties in the State. “The Amended list of candidates in respect of the 2023 Imo State Governorship election is hereby amended pursuant to the Orders of Court served on the Commission,” Oriaran-Anthony said. The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Oct. 10, disqualified Sylva from participating in the state governorship election. Justice Donatus Okorowo, in the judgment, ruled that Sylva having been sworn in twice and ruled for five years as governor of Bayelsa would breach the 1999 constitution as amended if allowed to contest again. The judge also declared that Sylva was not qualified to run in the November poll because if he won and sworn in, he would spend more than eight years in office as governor of the state. Also the Federal High Court, Owerri judicial division in Suit No. FHC/OW/CS/35/2023 – PRP & Anor v. INEC, amongst others, equally ordered INEC to include the name of the PRP governorship candidate in the list of nominated candidates already published on the INEC website.(NAN) #APCflagbearersnameremovedasinecreleasedcandidateslistaheadofGuberelection

PDP elders want party to invoke disciplinary action against Jonathan
Tumblr media
Some stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa state are yet to come to terms with the loss of the party at the November 16 governorship election in the state. The PDP Elders Forum has criticized the alleged role of President Goodluck Jonathan in the election and called for the party to take disciplinary action against the former president. In a statement in Yenagoa, the state capital, the forum’s Chairman Chief Benson Odoko said the action of the former President indicated that he supported the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the election. He added that Jonathan, who visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja before the election, kept his distance from the PDP throughout the campaigns. Odoko recalled that the ex-President also refused to congratulate the PDP candidate, Senator Douye Diri, who was Commissioner for Sports when Jonathan was governor. He also accused Jonathan and his wife of donating the Aridolf Hotel to the APC as the operational contact point for visiting dignitaries of the party and as the venue for the party’s primary. The forum’s chairman said what was even more stupefying was the visit to President Jonathan by APC leaders shortly after the election and another visit by the leader of the APC in the state, Timipre Sylva, the candidate of APC in the election, Lyon, and others to the Jonathans. He said the argument that Jonathan worked against the PDP because his preferred candidate, Timi Alaibe, lost in the primary was a pathetic perfidy meant to cover up the real reasons for this betrayal against Bayelsans and Nigerians. By • Olalekan Fagbade JUST IN;IGP meets Police Managers makes pronises over forthcoming guber poll in three States Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, says the police have put in place water- tight measures to ensure free and fair Nov.11 governorship election in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi. Egbetokun said this on Thursday in Abuja at a meeting with strategic police managers and media briefing to highlight policies, breakthroughs and achievements of the Nigeria Police Force in the last five weeks. He said that the meeting was to avail the participants of the opportunity to enumerate some of operational plans toward policing the off-season governorship election to be held concurrently in the three states. “We are going to leverage on the fact that the elections are limited to just three states to deploy adequately for this election. “Just as you have seen in other isolated elections in Nigeria, you will see that we have availability of men more in number than what we used to have in general elections. “So, I have no fear and nobody should entertain any fair about how safe and secure the elections are going to be in November. “Just three states, it will be very convenient for us, so nobody should entertain any fear about the election, we are prepared for it and very soon we will start the deployment,” he said Egbetokun said that the police deliberately decided to take its annual retreat to one of the states, where the election would hold. “The conference would be two weeks to the election, so it is deliberate and not by accident that we chose that state and that date. “It is to show to the public that we are ready for the election, so there is no fear about the election,” he said. He said that the internal security situation of the country, over the last one month had been relatively calm in spite of the threats of political and socio-economic instability that greeted the removal of fuel subsidy and post-election tribunal judgements across the country. “Comparatively, we have recorded lesser number of violent crimes and other major offences across the country. “ We are all aware of recent government efforts toward economic recovery and growth through local and international engagements with investors and technocrats. “The Nigeria Police Force is poised to support the efforts of government by providing the needed security and enabling environment for all legitimate businesses and other economic activities in Nigeria,” he said. He said that the force would leave no stone unturned and would continue to be on its toes in ensuring that it played its role well in the efforts toward achieving economic recovery, growth, as well as social and political development of the nation. “Consequently, all command commissioners of police and other tactical commanders are hereby directed to ensure adequate security is emplaced and sustained in their areas of responsibilities. “Any attempt by unscrupulous person(s) to sabotage the economic revival that our country is about to witness will be met with stiff opposition from all of us,” he said.(NAN) #AIGsothersmakespronisesoverguberpollsinKogi #BayelsaStates #IGP #Imo #meetsDIGs

Bayelsa communities accuse DPR, NOSDRA of complicity in oil spill
Tumblr media
Oil-ravaged communities in Bayelsa State have accused the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and another regulatory body, National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), of connivance with oil multinationals in the destruction of their environment. The four communities, Babragbene, Lasukugbene and Oyeregbene in Southern Ijaw and Mbikiba in Brass Local Council, made the accusation during a town hall meeting with members of the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission (BSOEC) at Oyeregbene community. The commission, led by the Archbishop of York in the United Kingdom (UK), Dr. John Sentamu, was on a fact-finding tour of oil spill and environmentally-degraded communities in the state. The communities, which demanded a clean-up of their land and waterways as well as payment of compensation by the oil multinationals operating in their area, said federal agencies – DPR and NOSDRA – were biased in favour of the international oil companies (IOCs) whenever spills occur. President of the Ijaw Association of Oil and Gas Producing Communities, Yabrou Tou, who spoke on behalf of the aggrieved communities, bemoaned the total neglect of host-communities by the oil multinationals despite series of appeals to them on the effect of the spills on their environment. He told the panel how he was taken to court in Abuja for reporting Chevron to the Nigeria Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for refusing to clean up a spill that occurred from its facility. Tou said the incident, which occurred in 2015 at an oil rig, spilled its contents for six months non-stop. Also, Pastor Ofongo Alamene and a fisherwoman, Mrs. Flora Soridei, called on the multinational companies to live up to their corporate responsibility by providing social amenities like potable water, electricity, healthcare and payment of compensation. Alamene, who reminded the multinational oil firms that a divided house cannot stand, said: “No medical or material supports are given to victims of oil spills while projects promised in the GMOUs are either haphazardly done or abandoned midway with flimsy excuses.” Bayelsa State Commissioner for the Environment, Ebipatei Apaingolo, in his remarks, said the commission was established to examine the impact of oil exploration activities on host-communities in the state. According to him, the oil companies have been neglecting their responsibilities of cleaning up the environment and paying compensation to affected communities. Read the full article

‘$16bn power projects’: We will get our money back – Buhari hints on Obasanjo, Atiku probe
Tumblr media
President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to probe the $16bn allegedly spent on the power sector during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo. He said this at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital, on Tuesday. PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar was Obasanjo’s deputy from 1999-2007 when the money was allegedly spent Buhari said: “The previous government mentioned on their own that they spent 16 billion American dollars for power. But you are better witnesses than myself. “Where is the power? Where is the money? We will follow them and eventually God willing we will get them and we will get our money back.” However, speaking at a meeting with at the secretariat complexes of the Councils of Traditional Rulers of Rivers and Bayelsa states, the president said: “I assure you that I’m all out for free, fair and credible elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC knows my stand on this. “Nigerians are assured of free and fair elections. Under this leadership, nobody will be allowed to intimidate other citizens. Nobody will be allowed to snatch ballot boxes and run with them. I will make sure that the votes count.” Buhari commended the introduction of the Permanent Voters Card, PVC and Card Reader, and urged the nation to embrace the technology, arguing that without it, the sixteen years of misrule by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP would not have been brought to an end. “In 16 years, the PDP thought nobody could remove them from office. The introduction of the PVC and Card Reader made sure that our votes counted in 2015 and the votes of Nigerians will count in 2019,” he stressed. Read the full article
