- Summer is almost over and the heat is hopefully on its way out. That means it’s a perfect time for this months #getoutofthecar2022 tour presented by the one and only @addressinggettysburg !!!! This month’s tour on September 17th, focuses on the Fifth Corps and their fighting around Little Round Top. Well, let’s be a little more specific actually. The tour will focus on the Corp’s action on the northern side of LRT and in The Valley of Death on the north-eastern parts of Houck’s Ridge. We might even talk about Eric the Producer’s favorite subject, the PA Reserves! Tour starts at 10 but we HIGHLY SUGGEST you get there early as there will be no significant parking close to the meeting point at the Crawford Statue. There are multiple pull off parking areas on the southern end of the battlefield at the Wheatfield, devils den, Sedgwick Ave intersection, and Brooke Ave. We again suggest getting there early and take a nice stroll as you make your way to the meeting point. A parking map will be released in the next couple days that you can use to plan your morning on the battlefield! On the way we will visit the historic city of Sibsagar, visiting various monuments built by the mighty Ahom Kings. . . Sibsagar :Sibsagar dated back to the days when Ahoms used to rule Assam and this Town was the capital of Ahom Kingdom, though this town now has emerged as an important centre for the tea and oil industries, it is still famous for Ahom Palaces and Monuments. Sibsagar meaning “The Ocean of Lord Shiva”, this town’s main feature is the water body which is a 257 acre tank known as “Borpukhuri” from which it takes its name. The Topside Barracks (Mile Long Barracks), located at the highest and widest plateau of Coregidor Island at the entrance of Manila Bay in southeastern part of Luzon Island, Philippines, was the world's longest military barracks for its entire length of 1,520 feet or 463.41 meters. Though it did not reach an entire mile in length, it was more popularly known as the Mile Long Barracks. It once served as the headquarters of the United States Army in the Far East (USAFFE). On December 29, 1941, Corregidor was attacked by the Japanese bombing and strafing with the Topside Barracks among those heavily damaged and destroyed. Day 3 of our Battlefield Tour War Graves, . . Digboi: The Digboi War Cemetery was built and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Located 1.5 kms away from Digboi town, the cemetery has about 200 burials mostly of British soldiers who laid their lives during World War II. During the Second World War the state of Assam, in India's Eastern Command, was an operational area of the Burma Campaign. Digboi, in the north-eastern corner of the state, near the Burmese border and on the road to Ledo, was on the lines of communication, and a military hospital was established there. . . Digboi War Cemetery was started for burials from the hospital and at the end of the war contained 70 burials. Later, the Army Graves Service brought in further graves from burial grounds in Panitola, Jorhat, Margherita, Tinsukia and Ledo, where permanent maintenance could not be assured, and one from the US Military Cemetery at Shingvuoiyang in Burma. . . Originally the cemetery stood on a small spur rising sharply from the main road, but an earthquake in 1950 caused cracks and subsidence, one fissure extending the full length of the cemetery. Subsequent landslides occasioned by heavy rains, particularly in 1953, so endangered the cemetery that it became necessary to move the graves to the present site which is not likely to be affected by erosion. . .
